One of the two pieces of fish in the fish and chips dinner
    Peter M.

Mr. Fish and Chips, is a very small and cozy, Mom and Pop eatery on Cochran, in Simi Valley. It is part of a strip mall and its location is really hidden from the main view. However, there is a steady stream of customers that come here to dine in or pick up. Of course, I came here for the fish and chips, even though they had fried chicken, oysters and other fare on the menu. After ordering and paying at the counter, I asked to use the restroom, which was only accessible through the kitchen section. On my return, I witnessed the lady (one of the owners, I presume), vigorously whipping up batter in a large cylindrical container. It explains why, when the fish pieces came out to me, they were crisp, non oily, not smothered and flavorful. The two fish pieces were rectangular (processed fish a ha), but surprisingly, the fish was flaky, moist and tasty. Actually, if it was shaped better, you would never have guessed it was not fresh. The French fries were also prepared to order so they came out hot and delicious. I am glad I stopped by. After all, we need to patronize small businesses, in and around our neighboring communities.

Great lunch specials. It's like inflation hasn't hit this place yet.

For the price, I can't give this anything less than five stars. It's an Asian take on fish and chips which means they also have an Asian menu with things like dumplings and eggrolls, but they use the tempura style batter for the fish, which is quite an interesting fusion. From someone who has eaten fish and chips in England and Ireland, I have to say this is pretty top-notch and while the dipping sauces are probably the weakest point overall, a lunch special starting at $8.99 is few and far between to find in this economy. Give this place a chance. It's one lady running the whole show, taking your orders, making the food - so great way to support local business in the Simi area and have some delicious fish.

Super friendly service. The prices are reasonable. I got to say the cold slaw here is fabulous! The fish and calamari strips tasted pretty fresh. The fries were ok they tasted like they were cooked in old oil if that makes sense. We might be back when we are craving greasy food.

2 piece fish dinner for $10.99

Nice little small restaurant tucked away in simi valley right off the 118 freeway. I ordered the fish and chips dinner which came with 2 pieces of fish, fries, tartar sauce and coleslaw. The cost was $10.99 plus tax. Food was delicious, made fresh to order and the employees - I assume owners - were pleasant and welcoming.

    Inside looking out.

First time here in ages. Wanted something different and this took care of that desire. The fish was great, the clam strips were pretty good, the egg rolls were very bland, French fries were mediocre but served hot and crisp; so I'm leaving 4 stars. Food was served hot and came out pretty fast. Service was quite attentive. Dining in was okay, we had bottled water to drink. I liked their tartar sauce. Loved the coleslaw, but the portion is so tiny as to be a joke. Next time we're trying the green beans and the shrimp.

My wife called MB Grille as we were already heading in that direction and talked to Alice and she allowed us to put our name on the list with the intent of us arriving in 10 minutes. We did arrive on time and the place was packed, we did get seated shortly after we arrived and Riley was our server. What a friendly easy going helpful person she was, answering questions that we had and getting answers for the questions she didn't have. Very attentive checking on us numerous times. We have dined here before and the fish is always fresh and cooked to perfection, Oysters are always good and the cocktails always spot on and refreshing. Big shout out to Riley on this one, great service is just as important as delicious food. And a great hostess such as Alice keeps the incoming customers flowing and happy and feeling welcome. Thank you both for making a fall out evening into a dining pleasure. Well done Riley and MB Grille, as always we will see you again soon. Bon Appetitto

You'll hear many patrons describe this restaurant as a hidden gem. Believe them. From our observation, reservations are highly desirable and may prove necessary for weekend nights. The only seatings available when we called a day earlier were at 4:30 or after 7:00 PM. We took the earlier, and frankly are glad we did. We arrived at their unassuming storefront location as the first patrons of the day, were warmly greeted and immediately seated. From this moment forward, my wife and I agreed: If anyone hopes to run a highly successful small restaurant, Bella's Bistro is the template. Inside, the ambiance was tasteful with gentle background music at the absolutely perfect tempo and volume to allow for conversation. We found the furnishings, tableware and restroom immaculate. Fresh flowers and a candle adorned each table, and the decorations for Valentine's Day were just the right tone, conveying appeal without being garish. Kudos to the staff for getting it right on all of the above. Though I generally set expectations low for the wine list or bartending at a small establishment, Bella's features a diverse wine list and specialty cocktails that pair very well with their menu. Of particular note was the superb crafting of cocktails during our visit - again, exceeding our expectations. It was during cocktail service that we noticed the full-service bar tucked in the rear corner of the restaurant, offering barstool seating and counter service for those who may be so inclined. We shared a nicely prepared caesar salad, while enjoying the basket of varied breads. While refrigerated butter pats were provided in the basket, it would have been a tad easier and more appealing if a small container of whipped butter had been offered instead. Our entrees included their homemade ravioli as well as chicken parmigiana, the latter included a large perfectly crafted portion of chicken accompanied by perfectly prepared spaghetti. To say this restaurant knows how to make and served great pasta is in understatement, with the ravioli a choice to be savored. A simple cheesecake dessert topped off the evening. Though the restaurant was full as our meal ended, we never felt rushed or ignored. Service was at all times attentive but never overbearing. There was genuine interest in our enjoyment and satisfaction. We encourage you to try Bella's Bistro!

Not exactly the first impression you'd expect from a steakhouse restaurant. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms appetizer. It arrived with plates but no silverware. We waited several minutes assuming our server would return with utensils, but she never did. We had to flag her down and ask for them. I also ordered a glass of wine that never arrived. The restaurant was slow, and by the time our entrées were served, I was still waiting. When we reminded our server, she just said "oh the wine yes!" She completely forgot! The food was even more disappointing than the service. The loaded mashed potatoes tasted extremely sour, no cheese, just shredded raw onions and sour cream with burnt top. How can you call this loaded baked potato? The mac and cheese was dry, bland, and lacked any real cheese flavor. Even the green beans had to a burnt pieces mixed in.None of the sides were at edible level. The steak was the only thing on my plate thats tolerable and even that left my stomach uncomfortable after my meal. The biggest disappointment was the food. For steakhouse prices, we were served loaded potatoes overwhelmed by raw onion, mac and cheese that tasted like cardboard, burnt green beans, and an average steak. The service and cleanliness issues only added to the frustration. We usually dine at Larsen's but decided to try support local businesses. After this experience, we'll be sticking with Larsen's. Let me first start by saying, the food is delicious (when cooked to the right temperature), but the…read moreservice, that's a bit questionable. The other night we checked in for our reservation & the hostess proceeded to take us to our table. She initially took us to a table set for 6, meanwhile we were a party of 7, so she motioned for us to sit at the next table, which was set for 7 people. Upon walking to our table & pulling out our chairs, a man in a suit, who I presume was the manager, asked if we had been helped. He completely caught us off guard because we hadn't even sat down yet. I answered him yes, & then he proceeded to tell me that usually someone from the front would walk us to our table (as if we had just walked into the restaurant & sat ourselves). What?! I responded & told him the host did. In actuality, she walked us to the vicinity of our table, not right up to our table, but that's a discussion for him to have with the hostess. Being we were customers & this was a nicer restaurant in comparison to a more casual or fast food place, the way in which the manager confronted us & handled the situation was completely unprofessional. Anyways, the rest of our party soon joined us & after ordering drinks & a couple of appetizers, we ordered our food. Well, out of the 3 medium well steaks we ordered, all 3 were brought to us rare (red & much more raw inside than we prefer, or ordered). We sent all 3 back & when they came back, they were better, but still not medium well). This is surprising because being Larsen's is a steakhouse, I would think the cooks would be able to gauge the temperatures more accurately. Needless to say, the seasoning they use gives their steaks a delicious flavor, so we did enjoy that. Another issue we encountered was our waiter, although very nice, took the initiative of charging our party for extra kids chicken tenders, simply because our friends' daughters were sharing them & had asked for an extra plate. While that was a kind gesture, he should have asked their parents if they would like extra tenders, not just do it & then charge us. Also, my friend's husband ordered 2 sides with his prime rib, thinking it came with 2 sides. When the bill came it reflected the $10 additional side, so he asked the waiter about how it, to which the waiter responded that the menu clearly states that it only comes with one side. I understand that & our friend's husband clearly didn't see that (nor did we pay attention when he ordered it, we were talking), but typically in cases like this, the waiter would let the person know that they would be happy to accommodate their request, but that the extra side will be an additional charge. After being at the restaurant for over 2 hours between the slow service, issues with our steaks, & discrepancies over the additional charges (which the waiter did take care of), we left a little less than satisfied with the restaurant, & the waiter was clearly not happy with us. Although the waiter took care of everything, not once did the manager come back to our table to apologize or ask how everything was. Usually when there's an issue, the manager will stop by the table to check in. I don't know that we'll be returning to this location.
