Well to start off my waitress checked on us maybe once and that might be pushing it. The sign says American Mexican food and American should be in bold, because it is some of the most bland food you will ever eat. They might not even use salt and pepper in the kitchen. We stopped going to the Grand Canyon. It was so good that we stopped coming back from the Grand Canyon. The people here are so nice and friendly that it felt like home. Both my tamale and beans were microwaved , which in fact is okay with me....they were hot. The problem is that had they been microwaved in other containers and then put on my plate, they would have appeared more appetizing and the tomato and lettuce would not have wilted. My "breakfast" was as follows: One egg, ordered 'over medium' that came far undercooked, and tepid in temperature. Two pancakes that were made days before, and I assume heated up in a microwave, due to the overwhelming stale taste and texture- something that can't be replicated in fresh made pancakes. Two strips of bacon that came basically UNCOOKED. The limp, slimy, translucent, uncooked bacon was also luke warm at best. Finally my cup of coffee was as expected, some Folgers knock-off, that tastes more like steeped saw dust than coffee. We were just passing through and chose this place for dinner based on reviews. It smelled good when we walked in. The decorations were charming nostalgic memorabilia. We had a 20 minute wait to be seated. When we were able to be seated, we were directed to move tables ourselves and seat ourselves. There was only one waitress working, and she was working hard to get everyone taken care of. The chips were good. The salsa wasn't. I had a cheese enchilada and thought it was good. The rest of the table didn't like their food. Rice was not good, flautas were flavorless, the guacamole didn't have any avocado in it. The place was not clean, the restroom was the worst. This was a great stop after visiting the Petrified Forest. We had the club sandwich with fries and the chef's salad with french dressing and all of it was very well done. The service was friendly and fast. There's lots to look at, and even a game to play at your table. A good stop all around. Friendly staff, basically a Mexican restaurant. If you do come only order Mexican items. Steaks we order medium and they came very well done. Would have said something but we waited so long as is didn't want to wait more. I have never seen such poor quality meat. Never got our soup and salad. We ordered the Chile rellenos they were awful :( I tried to just eat the center they were over fried, tough to cut through ... how?!?!!!! dry, super eggy tasting and very little cheese. 2 steak dinners were also not very good :( The special burger was good. The service was excellent; the waitress was the only waitress working and she was very friendly, hustled and polite! It is what it is.... When you have to start a sentence about a place, let's just say expectations shouldn't be high. Here's the breakdown, you need some food in this town early and decent; this is the place to go. Otherwise you'd best make your own if you want what you want (kick-ass breakfast!) I ordered the #1 special which came with my coffee, bacon, pancakes, and egg. I ordered my fresh out of the box orange juice on the side. Coffee was black and Foldgers best I gather. Pancake mix we decent this fine morning and my egg was probably the freshest thing since I'm sure they serve plenty. My Oscar Mayer bacon was yummy, but again it's bacon! -- You get the point. In the end, we ate and just hung out checking out the nostalgic antiques and toys. We were in Holbrook and eager for a Navajo taco. Thanks to Yelp reviews, we ended up at Mr. Maesta's Cafe. We both ordered a Navajo taco with green chili, and they were excellent! The frybread was made by someone who really knew what they were doing: it was substantial but still light and airy. The green chili had a tiny bit of a kick to it (probably not noticeable to anyone who grew up in New Mexico or Arizona, but I'm a wimp), so I asked for some sour cream. Yum. Perfection! We visited when indoor dining was shut down. Placed the order over the phone and waited in the parking lot to pick up. They brought the order directly to our car. I ordered the combination plate. If you are sensitive to spicy food, this is safe to order. They gave us everything we needed to eat in the park. They also threw in chips and salsa and an empanada. Incredibly nice staff, I assume she is an owner. Couldn't decide between two things a she said 'you have to have the green Chilli stuffed sopapilla. When it came out I thought 'heart attack on a plate', but it wasn't salty and incredibly flavorful. It continues to amaze me that every smaller town in Arizona has better Mexican food than anywhere in the Phoenix area. Beer selection was at best poor though. With more and more people interested in craft beers and unique alternatives, they have the 'staples'. So you're saying they a Mexican food place, what would you expect. Well we never caught a glimpse of Mr. Maesta but I get the feeling this might be a family business. The two ladies that ran the show were awesome! The chips and salsa were good so this is my sign for a good meal! We all ordered the combination plates with half green and half red sauce. The red is spicy the green mild and delicious, green was my favorite. The beef taco was good and cheese enchilada with chopped onion and green sauce was so darn tasty! The tamale with shredded beef very good and the been tostada not too shabby! The rice not my fave as I like it fluffy and dry but still was decent. The service was fantastic, the environment unique with antiques hanging everywhere, creepy in a good way. Overall great food, very low prices and really nice people....they bring sopapillas and there's honey on the tables...what's not to love? Stopped by Mr. Maesta's a bit after 8pm on a Wednesday night after trying to go to Joe & Aggies (they apparently close at 8, not 9 as advertised). At first, there was one other customer by herself and us but a few more folks came in as we ate. I ordered the Navajo taco to try it out and even though I specified with the waitress twice that I did it want onions, low and behold it came with onions buried on it that later made me very sick. It was pretty tasty though - not sure how they're supposed to taste but the fried dough "taco" part was really good. The toppings were fairly boring but I ate it all anyways. My husband got the green chili, which he says was good. Overall, we were hungry and they were open. Would I stop there again if it was the only place open? Probably. We are spending a couple on nights in Holbrook and after a day on the road we stopped into Mr. Marsta's Cafe. On the suggestion of the waitress I ordered the stuffed sopaipilla and my husband the hot roast beef sandwich. Our meals were delicious and I highly recommend this restaurant.
