Open bathrooms with lit candles, gross smell wafting into the dining area.

Did this place change ownership? Lots of issues with my experience today. I used to love this spot but today was just plain disappointing. Prices went up, that alone isn't an issue as everyone has had to raise prices recently. However, the quality has dropped considerably. The place had an odd flower smell, which I discovered was due to the bathroom doors being left open with candles burning in them. There were cleaning supplies out by the garbage bin, a possibly a health code issue? I got my usual. Chicken shawarma plate and some pita. The shawarma was dry, and the vegetables are different than they used to be. I was never asked which vegetables I'd like, and the new salads are an issue. One had chunks of lemon rinds in it!? Inedible and it blows out your pallet with raw lemon flavor. It literally hurt to chew it. It used to come with some hummus as well, but I guess that's not the case anymore. The sauces used to come on the side, now they were just layered on top of the meat and rice. That spicy sauce is a beast and really needs to be served separately. No onions, no pickled vegetables, no proper shawarma accompaniments. The pita was heated which was a nice touch at least. My friend got some of the new lentil soup, but I saw it come out of a microwave. Not flavorful, and apparently not even hot but barely warm. There was a coffee pot out filled with hot water but no coffee and a drink machine that looked unused sitting out as well. Not sure what's going on here but the place just feels sloppy and lazy now. The man working the counter was friendly enough but not half as inviting as the last guy. I'm not sure I'll be back at this rate, they really need to get their act together.

Food was excellent! I came for lunch and their lunch special is awesome! Comes with a bunch of side salads and you can choose any or all of the sauces - garlic sauce, tahini, and spicy sauce. A lot of food for a great price. Service is also very fast and they are very friendly. There are several chairs so you can sit down to eat or get it to go.

Great food made with fresh ingredients. You must try their hummus and lentil soup. Food is a bit expensive but worth it.

Absolutely recommended with 5 stars!…read more I heard about this restaurant from TikTok as it is rated the #1 restaurant in Lake County, and now I see why! We stopped in for some lunch. We were greeted by owner Marlene, who is absolutely wonderful. We placed our order and got some fresh lemon water. I ordered the lunch special Chicken and Gyro plate, and he ordered the Lamb Kabob Plate. While we waited for the food, we chatted with Marlene, and we were given some baklava (love that stuff). My goodness, the aroma coming from my plate was so good. The meats were cooked to perfection, and the vegetables were just right. He told Marlene that was not his first choice for food, but this meal changed his mind. The pitas and sauces were delicious as well. The presentation is nice, and portion sizes are large. I brought some home. I feel so bad because I forgot to tip, which is crazy for us. But, this just means we have to return soon and give a large tip. Don't skip trying this place. You won't be disappointed! Closed on Sunday, so plan accordingly.

The owner helped us choose since we had never been there before. She was so friendly and welcoming. I'd go back just to sit and talk to her, felt like family. Started with some Hummus, followed by a Beef & Chicken Shawerma Plate and a Lamb Shawerma Wrap and finished up with some Baklava. Large portions and very reasonably priced.

Tucked unassumingly in a shopping mall in Mundelein, Ararat is a tiny hidden gem. With only about an 8 table dining room, it is a cozy, intimate venue, with a huge and amazing menu, featuring Armenian cuisine. A party of 4, we ordered drinks, 3 appetizers, and an entree for each of us. The portions were generous, delicious, and we probably over-ordered by at least one appetizer, but we wanted to sample and share as many dishes as possible. We began with glasses of tasty Armenian apricot wine. Our appetizers came out in sequence rather than all at once, starting with Italian Lady's Fingers. A mixed salad of cooked bell peppers, nuts, onion and prunes. Very good. Next we were served Khorovats, Armenian style grilled eggplant . Also an excellent dish. Last was beef and lamb dumplings, Khinkili. One of these large, juicy dumplings could have been almost half a meal by itself. I've tried khinkili in a number of restaurants, and these were the best I've eaten. Our entrees were Steak Kebab, Lamb Kebab, Lamb Rice Pilaf, and Frikasse, a chicken, mushroom, vegetable in sour cream sauce dish. All were very good, and were were saddened that we were all too full to try any of their baked goods desserts. The meal was excellent, the small dining room comfy and the service very good. One word of caution: If you plan to dine here you must be patient. Dishes were served as they were prepared, and apparantly little if anything is prepared in advance. The advantage is hot, fresh, and tasty dishes. The disadvantage is that there was a 10 minute delay between service of the 1st and 4th entree. We were in no hurry, so we did not mind. Also we were sharing our selection. For a casual, relaxed, delicious dining adventure I highly recommend Ararat.
