First time at this place although the hubs had been here before. We were meeting friends here for dinner on a Friday night came here around 7:30pm and were seated immediately. They brought over tea in a teapot and cups. We ordered a large hot and sour soup to share between 4 of us and it was plenty. Also ordered the duck appetizer which was really good tender and flavorful. Kung pao chicken is the hubs' favorite and was pretty good. Ma po tofu was good quite spicy very soft tofu. Also got the vegetable dish the mixed vegetable dish which had the Chinese squash, carrots and mushrooms. Everything was delicious and I couldn't stop eating! They brought oranges with the bill which is nice - I like healthy desserts ha ha! The ambience decor is nice with beautiful painted designs on the walls. They also have 2 private rooms with seating for private parties. Service was a bit slow in the beginning but once they got the order the dishes came out fairly quickly. We had lots of leftovers and they packed it all nicely and even gave us 2 extra bags since we wanted to split the leftovers between us. A nice authentic Taiwanese restaurant. We actually came here for a meal with our family and friends right after we got married. It had been my first time in this restaurant and they have at least one private room for events. The food was good, I enjoyed their signature smoked duck dish. We had brought a cake from outside and they allowed us to cut and eat it after our meal. I have fond memories from this! The food was okay, but the service was extremely poor. Several families went there for dinner tonight with our young children. After we placed our order, the waitress rudely told me that my two young children could not sit where they were sitting because dishes would be served from that direction. As soon as my children were told to move, the waitress said, "Move! Fast!" in a very impatient and upset tone. At another point, one of my friend's children slightly moved the Lazy Susan while the waitress was cutting the pork leg. Again, in a very stern and irritated tone, she said, "Stop moving that! Didn't you see that I'm cutting it?" Throughout the ordering process, the waitress appeared upset and repeatedly told us that we were expected to order more to meet the restaurant's $260 minimum because we had been given a large table in a private room. We explained several times that four additional guests would be joining us and that we wanted to leave them an opportunity to order what they liked when they arrived. We patiently explained that although we had not yet ordered enough to reach the minimum, we had not finished ordering. However, the waitress did not appear willing to understand. After the remaining guests arrived, my friend asked the waitress how much more we needed to order to reach the $260 minimum. She refused to disclose the amount and simply appeared to want us to order as much as possible. The restaurant also automatically added a 15% tip to our bill, even though we did not believe the service deserved it. I have several concerns: 1. The waitress appears not to have been taught basic manners by her parents or teachers, which is a shame. 2. It is the restaurant's responsibility to ensure that no guest is burned or injured while food is being served, regardless of where the guest is sitting. If my children were injured because a waitress tripped while serving food, that would not be my children's fault; it would be the restaurant's responsibility. In addition, asking my children to move did not solve the issue because, when the other four guests arrived, they occupied those same seats. The waitress's comments also made us concerned that the restaurant might not place customer safety first. 3. Is it even legal for a restaurant to impose a minimum spending requirement? I will check with OpenAI and report the restaurant to the appropriate department if this practice is illegal. In any case, I will not return to this restaurant. It is simply not worth it. read more

Second impression of Chinese food in the Boston metro within 2 years (last time was April 2023). We arrived right after opening so the restaurant was empty & we were first to be seated, so of course got the booth table by the window. The menu is easy to browse, and many of the options lean more American Chinese than authentic. However, if you know how to translate well there are definitely some gems like the dishes pictured. The west lake beef soup reminds me of my childhood in Shanghai, but the texture was very off (where was the starch??) All 3 other dishes we got were standouts, in particular the pan fried noodles w/ beef. They DO give fortune cookies when you receive the bill, so there's that little treat to anticipate. Ordered takeout for dinner. Street parking was fine on a weekend afternoon, but unsure how it would be during a busier time. Ordered a variety of dishes, including: stir fried rice cake with pork, Peking ravioli, beef Lo mein, sweet and sour pork chop, stir fried pea pod stems, pork with bamboo shoots. I liked the Peking ravioli and the pork chop dish the best. The beef Lo mein had a lot of other ingredients that we weren't used to (still enjoyed, just a little different), and their fried rice cake dish was also a bit different than we've had from other Taiwanese restaurants (still enjoyed). Tasty spot for Chinese food in Waltham. We came here on a Saturday night and while it was busy, we were able to get a table immediately. We ordered the beef with green onion, salt and pepper pork chops, green beans, and eel with sticky rice. They had a pot of delicious jasmine tea on the table and a little cold cabbage appetizer. The food was so on point and how I remember these dishes when in Taiwan. The service was very much on top of their game and were regularly checking on us and my son, making sure we were taken care of. I was in the area for a friend's bday on a cold and stormy late-spring night and needed something hot and probably spicy! Luckily I was with a friend who is always down to over-order food. We went deep on the menu with seafood dumplings wrapped in squid-ink wraps. They were succulent, steaming hot and beautifully flavored. We also ordered the Mulan cold chicken, which I LOVED. It's very Taiwanese and not for everyone. Dominated by 5 spice blend seasonings and oh so very tender (almost soft), it is such a unique dish that is very hard to find and even harder to do well! For mains we got the Lamb in Chili Sauce. It was giving Mapo Tofu vibes, came out in a HUGE bowl with scallions, tofu, heaping servings of diced lamb that was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It was spicy (in my opinion, but my Gringo friend found it a bit 'hot'). What a treat, and a must try if you are there. We gut-bust ordered the sizzling beef on the recommendation of the staff and oh were they right!! What ever they are doing to their meats, everything is just perfectly cooked, tender and juicy. This is not your corner "Chinese Restaurant". The quality is on par with much more expensive restaurants. Is it hard to get service sometimes? Yes. Does the place look basic? Yes. Had a great meal here which fortunately I got to enjoy in a private room as the main dining room seemed to be very busy. This is probably due to the giant portion sizes and reasonable prices offered here for food that's cooked quite well. Not every dish was great, as they seem to do best in banquet style dishes, particularly of Taiwanese style but for the more generic options that you'd generally order from an Americanized Chinese restaurant, these were only okay. In particular there were some items that really stood out for me. The Smoked duck taiwanese style is a must try item, full of flavor from the tea leaves and super tender. The salted crispy chicken is not excessively salty but full of flavor and very crispy. The pork chop with sweet and sour sauce is nice and just a bit fatty, particularly around the bone and has a good balance to it. The braised pork shin in brown sauce is huge and had nice tender meat, but the skin is just unbelievably soft and flavorful. Mu Lan FIsh is a bit spicy, but really more fragrant and the fish fillets are nice and tender within the spicy sauce. In general, if you stick with the recommendations you'll have quite a good meal, but generic fried rice or lo mein type options are only okay. A few of the more traditional options like scallion pancakes, eggplant with basil, and shredded pork with baby bamboo were a bit underwhelming for me -- not bad, but I've had better versions in the area. Overall, great choice if you're looking for banquet style chinese food and a good choice if you're looking to enjoy Taiwanese food. The staff was very accommodating with our party size, and in fact they have multiple private rooms that can seat up to 12-13 people. The food was delicious and came out extremely quickly. We came on a weekday for lunch and the place was still pretty packed. They have a private room that can seat 20 as well, which was also in use. The crowd is mostly asian, as the authenticity of the food draws many asian people from all over. The food is delicious! The lunch specials are a great deal ($12-15 each for a plate and rice). The quantity is more than enough for a single person. The food isn't too salty and tastes very authentic. I definitely plan on coming back for dinner to try out the menu then. They also had an assortment of dumpling offerings which I hope to try next time! Parking is easy, both on the street in front and the side streets next to the restaurant. Service is quick and easy. When i stop in for a lunch or deliver i usually go for the rice, spicy crispy chicken. Has Taiwanese style spices with chili oil for a kick. (Not super spicy or anything) The pan fried noodles with beef or pork is also a go to of mine! You can have the noodles seperate if you wish in case you don't like them too soggy. But the sauce and noodz together are great! I would have taken pictures but forgot as i was starving and just ate it. Wow this place totally caught me off guard. Came here for lunch and it's a very spacious restaurant, not super crowded. My friend and I ordered rice cakes, fried rice, and pork chops. The texture was perfect too because they were soooo chewy. The fried rice was just an extremely solid fried rice, can't really go wrong there. The pork chop... wow. Mulan is a great Taiwanese restaurant with two locations in Waltham and Cambridge. If you're like me and love duck, go with the Waltham location as the supplier may be different. Almost every time we come here for lunch or dinner, there has always been a table for us without waiting. Back to the duck. It's not often where a restaurant cooks a juicy, tender, AND smoky duck with all flavors congealing perfectly. The essence of the duck and its gaminess is still preserved while the smokiness (however they infused it) weaves perfectly into the meat itself as you take a bite, place down your utensils, chew, sink into your chair, chew, angle your heads toward the ceiling, chew, and wonder how this was dish was created. For us, when we dine there or order take out, this dish is an automatic reflex. The Stir Fried Bitter Melon with Salty Egg and Pork works so well together with its bitterness and saltiness layering on each other. Also, there's a dish with eggplant and sea cucumber that has loads of sea cucumber and for its price is worth the order because sea cucumber isn't cheap. The staff is friendly, very attentive and come by every so often to check in on us.
