While Murakami does offer a regular sushi menu, most come here for the chirashi bowls (sushi on top of rice). For the amount of fish/sushi you get for the price, it's super worth it. They have a few suggested combos or you can make your own with minimum 4 item choices (salmon, tuna, yellowtail, scallops for me but they have plenty of other options too) which'll start you off around $15 and run you up more as you add items into your bowl. I was sooo full after my bowl. Definitely fuller than I usually am after eating regular sushi at other places. Also pro tip: ask for a side of their garlic soy sauce! The restaurant isn't huge so I'd definitely call ahead and make a reservation for bigger parties or on busy weekend nights. They also have a weekend lunch special I've yet to explore! Parking can be tough in this area on busy nights but if you drive down side streets two to three blocks away, there's usually free parking. Murakami is simplicity at its finest. The complete opposite of pretentious. A neighborhood gem that doesn't need any smoke and mirrors. The quality of the food is everything. A large part of their menu is a variety of chirashi bowls (fresh sashimi on sushi rice garnished with cucumbers, nori/seawood, and ginger). They have a selection of 'favorite bowls' with different variances of sashimi. And if the 8 favorites don't float your boat, you also have the option of building your own. My girlfriend and I decided to share an order of sashimi-- a mix of yellowtail and salmon and the number SEVEN chirashi bowl--tuna, salmon, yellowtail, albacore, crab, shrimp, eel, avocado, and scallop. Today I ordered Murakami for our company lunch and was charged a $17 "container fee" for our food being packaged into a cardboard box. For 9 people, our order was fairly large. We have ordered from Murakami before and have always enjoyed the experience and food. The sushi is fresh and the bowl are large and filling. As usual, we were all completely satisfied with our meals (although the price point is a bit high). However, the review is really about the $17 charge for boxing our meal (photo of receipt included). When questioned about this high fee associated with simply boxing our large group order I was told that all companies/group orders encounter this $17 fee. A $17 fee for a cardboard box (pictures included) is ridiculous and exorbitant. For that reason, I would not recommend Murakami for any group order. $17 to package food into a large cardboard box is unwarranted and unnecessary. read more

I came here for lunch and ordered several dishes as I was super hungry. Those dishes being the seaweed salad, blue crab on crispy rice, rainbow roll, and dragon roll. The seaweed salad was a mixture of many different types of seeweed as opposed to the stringy bright green seeweed that's commonly served in other sushi restaurants. I didn't mind this dish as I appreciated the variety and uniqueness in flavor. The blue crab on crispy rice was served in pairs (there were 2 pieces). I was hoping the portion would be bigger for their price. Nonetheless I quite enjoyed the crispness of the rice against the softness of the blue crab. Though I wish there was more flavor to compliment these textures. Additionally, the soy sauce that was served tasted a little more sour than salty which I didn't like. The dragon and rainbow rolls were somewhat up to standard with it's quality of ingredients minus the rice. I felt that the rice was too hard in texture that it distracted from the overall taste of the rolls. The raw fish on the rainbow rolls did not taste as fresh as I would've liked for the price. Each roll was about $20 so I have higher expectations for taste and quality. Overall, this place serves OK sushi in my opinion. The reason I gave it a 3 instead of a higher score is because of the price. I don't think the quality of the food matches the higher tier price for sushi. read more

They used to be small hole in the wall on Gower off of Hollywood it was a hidden jewel... but now the secrets out so here is my yelp review. First off everything on the menu is good but if it's your first time the Chirashi bowl is a must Instagram worthy plating and the tastiness to back it up. Don't forget the garlic sauce on the side. Staff is always on point with service even during the busiest dinner shifts. Call ahead of time to make a reservation or plan to wait. Seating is first come first serve and your entire party must be present. We've been coming here for a while and we have our spot we like to sit (because we have a stroller) and they always do their best to accommodate us! Everyone there comes to say hi and treats us like family! The girls working here always come say hi to the baby...And sometimes they will even hold him if he starts to fuss and we are finishing our dinner. We really found OUR spot here. I paid $60 for a bowl and I am still starving. I got the 4 protein bowl with salmon, yellowtail, salmon egg and Uni. They charge additional for uni and barely give you any. 3 tiny pieces of salmon and 3 tiny pieces of yellowtail. It wouldn't even make up a decent size appetizer. Yum! Loved stumbling upon this place while out on a Saturday night. It's not busy, server was friendly, and the fish is delicious! My husband and I eat got sushi bowls (#5 and #6). It's the perfect amount of food for one (if I was hungrier, maybe an app). Highly recommend getting the garlic soy sauce as well. Called them to place an order for delivery and they told me to go to Uber eats for delivery. The menu is more expensive by a few dollars thru Uber eats but I get it cuz they probably have to pay a percentage to Uber eats so they jack up the prices on Uber eats. The sushi wasn't good and every roll fell apart and very poorly done. I've eaten at lots of sushi places before and if the roll falls apart before it goes in your mouth then that restaurant should not sell sushi. I ordered a few different rolls and they weren't good and def not worth the money we spent. The best part about the meal were the Brussels sprouts hence the 2 stars. Came here at 11.45am on Sunday and they let us in before their opening time (12pm). The service was superb! Fast, friendly, not annoying waiter. The two of us ordered 2 5-items chirashi (fresh sashimi on a bed of rice) for $17.5 each. There was a lot of choices for the chirashi and it was so hard to choose only 5 out of 20ish choices. In the end, I got salmon, tuna, yellowtail, spicy tuna and unagi. My boyfriend got salmon, tuna, yellowtail, albacore, and salmon eggs. The food came out so fast and the presentation was beautiful. The fish is super fresh and thick-cut and the portion is generous compared to other restaurants in Melrose Ave, where they only give one grain of rice per portion.
