Pricing-wise, the stand-out option was the bowls. The eel bowl had a huge portion of eel and the sushi rice was fresh and not dry. The bowl came with radish, nori, some pickles daikon, and avocado. The daily specials are an indicator of the freshness of the fish here. There is a variety of different rolls, nigiri, and sashimi to choose from. They also have some good beer on draft. read more

The Brussel sprouts and the garlic edamame are the best choice for appetizers. Spicy miso soup was yummy and spicy. Wasn't a fan of the tempura veggies. Servers were attentive and friendly. Parking was ok but I'm sure it could have been worse.....overall, we will be back! read more

We've been to this sushi bar probably seven times and we've always had a good experience. I don't know what happened the last time we went, but the main guy at the sushi bar had some sort of beef with us that we didn't know about and it was palpable. Every time we go we spend about 300 bucks and I am taking my money somewhere else from now on. read more

Murakami is my go to local sushi spot. It's always incredible, reliable and there's never a long wait. The servers sushi chefs are all extremely sweet and they do so much to help the community (like making sushi for the firefighters). I LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEE this place. As someone who has been to almost every sushi place in LA, It's hard to come by a place that has high quality sushi for a good price. This is the only place I've seen where you can make a custom chirashi bowl and everything is fresh. They always take care of us and make us feel welcomed. We bring our black pug with us and he's like the Murakami celebrity. The customer service is 10/10. There is nothing fancy about this place and that's the best part, good people, good food, good vibes. read more

After ordering takeout from here for many months at the behest of my partner, we finally got to go in person. I've always thought it was good for takeout - I didn't know it was about to get even better. The outdoor seating was lovely with a heater to keep the LA winter away. The fish was so fresh and flavorful with lots of fun specials to try. I had a Truffle Ponzu Salmon Roll that was unreal - I was sad when it was finished because I wanted more! Sometimes I like Japanese restaurants that look a little dated, it means they focus on the food which is the most important part. This place has been open since the 80's (says the exact date on the menu but I forgot) so it's a good sign. I had a big group of people and ordered the party platter which was 6 rolls. It came out and was good but for some reason wasn't as big as I thought it would be. I ordered a tekka maki for myself and it was very good. The only reason I docked it a star is only really a symptom of them being so busy that the service was stretched thin. They were friendly and attentive and doing great but when it's a packed house and you're a big party, things may fall through the cracks. They got one person's order wrong. Overall I'd come here again. Expect to spend $25-$30 per person. read more

I got a bowl with toro, mackerel, yellowtail, spicy scallop, salmon and unagi. The portions were good and the fish was pretty fresh! Halibut was interesting with the truffle, first time definitely won't be the last. We ended it with red snapper and black snapper. Absolutely amazing, I think the black snapper or the red snapper was slightly charred. It was so good. To say the least, this restaurant was worth it!

The plaza itself is unassuming, and at 7pm on a Thursday, most other businesses in the plaza had closed. The lot was full, so we paid $12 for valet parking across the street. We waited for about 10 minutes for our seats at the bar, and honestly, the bar was so much fun! We sat right in front of our sushi chef and orated our orders directly to him, piece by piece. He was such a jovial soul and made our experience so warm and enjoyable. I was very impressed not only with his ability to make sushi but the attention and care he paid to his customers. For example, he noticed that I especially enjoyed the fattier cuts of fish such as ootoro and salmon toro, so when I ordered yellowtail, he recommended that I try the kanpachi toro instead. It was a great recommendation, and in that moment, I felt so seen. The chefs here are truly masters of their craft, both in sushi making and hospitality. In total, I had the toro, salmon, unagi, scallops, kanpachi, salmon toro, and kanpachi toro. Every piece of nigiri I had was very fresh and delicious. My favorite pieces of sushi had to be the toro. You actually get two different cuts of toro with one order, chuutoro and ootoro which are medium fatty and full fatty respectively. Each piece was so delicious and indulgent, I don't know if I can choose a favorite. I had a wonderful experience at Sushi Gen, and I think that sitting at the bar was way more fun than what sitting at a table would've been. I loved getting to interact with our sushi chef and felt very well taken care of. The sushi was amazing. I'm already plotting an excuse for my next visit.

Found this place by chance as we were driving around the neighborhood. I probably have past this place thousand times before. Hostess, Waitress and Chef were incredibly friendly. Always smiling, attentive and courteous. The chef refilled my ginger everytime it was empty and always asked if I needed anything else. It looked like this place was known for their sushi bowls, but we didn't order that so I can't comment on it. All I can say is that those bowls looked absolutely stunning. We ordered a sayori saki, toro nigiri, salmon nigiri, salmon skin hand rolls, spicy tuna crispy rice, yellowtail roll with green onion and the albacore with crispy onion. The fish here is extremely fresh and the rice is also very tasty. My favorite of the day was the yellowtail roll with green onion, the toro and the albacore with crispy onion. I wasn't a fan of how they seared the albacore, but it was still delicious. The crispy rice was also good, but a little towards the bland side. They also put a hint of wasabi on all their sushi nigiris. I liked the simple touch that gives Murakmi their own flare. If you don't like wasabi I'm sure you can tell them not to add it. The only reason this spot doesn't get a solid 5 is because the decor was nothing to even mention and we had to wait about 25 minutes to get seated when the lady said only 5 minutes. read more

I used to go to the old location, and then I finally got around to going to the new one. I really love the food, it's simple and fresh and beautifully presented. The Chirashi bowls are a great deal, you can get a ton of sashimi over rice for the same price as a single roll, but it's way more filling and has more variety. Add some miso soup and maybe a salad appetizer and some green tea and you have the perfect summer meal. Last night we sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed watching the chefs slice fresh fish. The staff was very friendly, and I like that they are actually Japanese (some of them anyway because I heard them speaking), it makes it feel authentic, which it is. read more

I've travelled to Japan a few times over the past few years and thought I'd been spoiled for life to never be able to find a high level of sushi quality in america at an affordable, every day price. Good God, was I wrong. This place is without question the best quality sushi I've ever had in America at such a reasonable price --- great fresh ingredients, nice presentation, great environment and extremely friendly staff. if you find a place with better sushi that doesn't cost half the mortgage, please tell me --- but I'm blown away that this awesome place exists right in my neighborhood! 5 stars for sure . Sushi is everywhere. Even at 7-11 for f-cks sake. Most sushi places are not authentic, the fish isn't fresh and they get away with it because #wypepo love rolls, not sushi. Murakami is where you go for damn good sushi. The temp of the fish is right, the rice is seasoned, and the quality is fantastic. You get an authentic vibe here because the decor is underwhelming but who cares when the food is this good. Get the ponzu oysters. Amazing!!! If you want hip ambiance and decorative rolls smack yourself in the face and shave off your beard, hipster. If you want want good sushi go here. Japanese guy approved. I'm not sure why all of the reviews here are great. Maybe the pricing? Decently priced but the quality was horrendous. Service was slow and the waitress was rude, forgot to bring extra ginger and did not remember any requests or modifications made. But all of that aside (sometimes sushi restaurants are just like that...) the sushi was drenched in wasabi.....the worst thing you could do to a beautiful fish. Maybe their specialty items are drenched in enough sauce or ponzu that it masks the gross fish they use but their attempt to mask the freshness of nigiri with liberal amounts of wasabi was just heartbreaking. read more

I have been there 4 times in the last 3 weeks. The first 2 times were amazing. The quality of the fish is far superior to other Sushi places and the prices are even better. The last 2 times I went I was VERY disappointed. It appears that they are preparing the fish for the bowls earlier in the day and the fish did not taste as fresh. I really hope they understand that the quality needs to be good and that the bowls tasted 10 times better when they prepared it fresh rather than preparing it at the beginning of the day where the fish doesn't stay fresh. read more

Murakami is my absolute favourite of all the Teppanyaki steakhouses I've been to, from big famous chains to little family-owned places.
