It's mediocre Chinese food. Everything here taste like everything else in every pace in Chinatown. I was immediately excited when I saw ramen in the menu, but then it came to the table. I got the chef special (whatever that mean). I got a bowl of noodles in a tasteless salty broth. It had random seafood, which in my opinion does not go well with ramen. Sure, I could probably go 3-stars here, but I feel compelled to dish out 4 because a true 3-star establishment wouldn't take in an impromptu and rag-tag team of 12 very sweaty persons holding 8 bottles of champagne at 3:30 in the morning just hours after the 2013 New Year's countdown took place with smiles on their faces. It's nothing flashy, the Sriracha bottle is sticky and overall it's pretty basic but they were able to sling 4 tables together in about 20 seconds to accommodate our large group and they fit 2 out of 2 of our criteria while searching for eats that very late evening. 1.) They were open and 2.) They were BYOB. We were sold! Located in the new Chinatown strip, this relatively small spot houses several tables and booths as well as a small bubble tea bar. They host nightly specials including a $15.95 lobster special that I can't vouch for as I stayed veggie on this visit. The prices seemed pretty cheap to me and the food came out quickly despite our putting off ordering for a half hour while we waited for 5/12 of our team who was still en route. Items ordered: * Veggie egg rolls (4 for $3.25) Each a good size and very filling * Japanese Tofu Appetizer ($5.95) was a large portion and apparently Japanese tofu means it's a slightly softer tofu on the inside. The sauce on top was sooo good that I'd consider ordering this as a meal next time since the portion is enough for one person. * Kung Pow Tofu (by request $7.95). The portion got me through two full meals and though I've never found Chinese cuisine to be able to reach the level of elevated spice that I enjoy, the smoky flavor in the peppers and roasted cashews were fantastic. * Stewed Mushrooms and tofu ($7.95) Very oily and almost entirely flavorless. Highly bland and while lite to bite, heavy in gubby. * Noodle Bowls - while I didn't try the noodle bowls as they don't offer any non-meat options, the bowls were jam packed with noodles. If you stuck your fork and spoon in together, you'd fish out a fist-sized mound with every pull, though the other topping were pretty sparse, leaving our group to wonder if the meat and extras might be hiding under the noodles or just absent. The bill for 2 people who left with leftovers was $25-$30 with tax and tip. Not a bad deal considering the mighty New Year's Day breakfast it supplied me with. While I wouldn't name My Place a destination spot or anything that I'd go out of my way to get to, if you're looking to fill a VERY late night (I believe they're open till 6am- but don't quote me on that) with eats and looking to BYOB as well, this is a totally legit and fine option to make your evening plans of eating Chinese food and drinking whatever you brought with you come true. read more

We got talked into coming here by a historian who specializes in modern indigenous Mexico so I didn't really trust his credentials for sniffing out authentic Chinese, but the delicious smells hitting us on entry coupled with the observation that on a Saturday night we were absolutely the only party that wasn't speaking Han -- this gave me newfound respect. He's enough of a regular that he knew the best parking (2$ in the scary looking lot under the expressway), bring your ticket in for validation. The lobster deal is unbeatable. There was only a short wait, the place is open late and during the time we were there, no tables were empty for longer than 20 seconds or so, this place is popular among those who know. The three of us knocked down four entrees and two appetizers as fast as they brought them out, service is efficient and competent, not overly friendly but typical for Chinatown. Prices are a little lower than similar places in Chinatown. The decor isn't going to win any awards, this is a no frills place, but it's clean and even when busy it doesn't feel cramped. Unlike a lot of Chinese restaurants, you can see what's going on in the kitchen, it's clean and the seafood is prepared fresh. I came to this little place on a mission to try the hotpot, we arrived with a group of 7 and 5 of them were teenagers, so they didn't want to try hotpot, so we decided to order off the menu for them and my husband and I would try the hotpot, the waiter said if we want hotpot then everyone would have to order hotpot also. One star knocked off. When I asked the waiter if we can order, he just looked at me and shook his finger and said wait. Another star taken off. That was just rude. After all the food came out, the waiter never came back to see if we need anything, such as water or more rice etc. When we were ready to pay, we sat around trying to flag down any of the staff to just get our bill. That was a good 20 min. by this time I was tired of their service and knew I have to leave a review so hopefully the owners of this restaurant will read and know how their staff treats their customers. The place could be a bit on the dirty side, but it could be that we came in 11pm and it was a busy day for them and they didn't have time to do a clean sweep yet. There was only one restroom there and truthfully someone was in there for awhile so I didn't want to go in next. Now as for the food, hotpot, I can't say anything because I didn't get to try it. But we ordered 4 different Ramen only 2 of them were good and the other 2 were very bland. So if their broth was the same for the hotpot then I lucked out on not having the hotpot. We also ordered several traditional Chinese dishes. Calamari and lobster, were made the same way, deep fried with salt and black pepper. Those two dishes were good, and the best part was the special they had on the lobster, 2 for $25, that's cheap. We also tried the spicy lamb, it had a different flavor to it and was quite spicy, I liked it and so did the kids. So to sum up this review, the service was bad, it wasn't very clean, but the food is descent. You can try this place but I wish you good luck on getting any service. read more

My parents and I are here on Christmas. Overall, the place looks and feels dirty. It's also noisy, and the service is subpar. We came because my parents were enticed by a lobster special. We got a 2 lobster special, rice noodles with beef, and salt &a pepper pork chops. The lobster came, and it wasn't two lobsters. There were 2 claws total though there were two lobster heads and ends of the tails. The other food was bland. Salt and pepper porn chops with no salt?? Ridiculous. The noodles were worse than a regular Chinese American takeout place in the suburbs. They were bland, swimming in grease and soggy. Furthermore, when we told the waiter about the tasteless porkchops, he told my father that had he told him before we had eaten any he could've done something. How would any of us know that the cooking was bad without tasting it? The service was also really awful up to the point where they were trying to usher us out so they could seat more people. My advice would be to skip this place. There are plenty of great options in China town. This restaurant offered no value. read more

We were hungry at 1am and figured we'd give this place a shot. We weren't blown away but it was fine. The walnut shrimp were tasty. The mushroom and beef over rice in a clay/stone bowl was kind of disappointing. It was mostly rice with only a little meat. We also go the salt and pepper assorted seafood and that was very meh. The salt and pepper squid is much better at Golden Bull. I really wanted to like this place because a friend of mine kept raving about it. Sadly, I don't think it'll be on my top 10 places to go eat. First things first, the location is fun. It's right in the heart of Chinatown, and I love how authentic that feels as you walk into the area. In terms of service, they were great in adjusting to the group of 13 we had walking in. No problem or issues getting that together. However, moving forward, the service wasn't the best. They were great about bringing more broth to fill the hot pots, my water was always full, but they were terrible about asking me if I wanted another beer (had the all you can eat and drink option). I constantly felt as if I had to ask about getting new plates, additional silverware, and extra napkins. Moving onto the food, the meat didn't seem fresh. It wasn't by any means terrible, but definitely not the best quality. I guess you can't expect too much when you're buying an all you can eat option. The saving grace for this place were the potstickers. Seriously, those potstickers were probably some of the best ones I've ever had. If anything, when you go, make sure you get an order or two! Just ordered delivery and it took them 2 hrs to deliver Chinese food. The food was cold and not what I ordered. The delivery guy charged me a different price than what they told me when I ordered and the dumb f*ck didn't give me a receipt. So of course I called back to speak to the manager and now they want me to wait for the delivery guy to finish delivering the rest of the cold shitty food in his car to bring me my money back. The Mongolian Beef combo box I ordered had stones in it!! Yes, actual, inedible stones! Worst of all, this is not the first time that I have felt something hard and sandy in my food from My Place, but when I pried them out of my mouth and saw them this time, they were really big! I found three larger stones and probably had swallowed more smaller ones! I felt something sand-like in my teeth as I was eating and it really hurt my molars as I was chewing. I know this has happened before because I order from them often and have felt like I'm chewing on sand at least 2-3 times before as well, but I was never able to take out of my mouth something as big and as many as this time. If I am finding stones consistently in my food, this means you will be too! This is really dangerous and shows their food preparation is absolutely negligent. We came here for a family dinner last week. Although the staff was accommodating to our large party group, the food was not that great. It needed better/more seasoning. I liked that they had unique dishes like split shrimp on vermicelli noodles and clams in a clay pot. But I just wish they had a lazy susan for all the dishes that we ordered. My Place Chinese cuisine is a down home cooking place where you can order a bunch of dishes to try with a large group of friends! We had 11 dishes for 8 adults and it was plenty! The only problem with this place is that they don't take reservations and it is full by 6:00, so we were there by 5 and we got the only large table they had! This is my favorite place in Chinatown chicago. The food is always good, service above average compared to other Chinatown places. And of we get the waitress with long hair she's always really friendly to us. The place is nothing fancy, more of a casual environment than say minghin or cai. It gets quite busy sometimes, so I'd avoid going during weekend rush hours. Onto the food: the prices are very good, IMHO. The owners spent less of their focus on decor so the food prices can be as competitive as they are. They have an afternoon tea priced from like $3.95-5.95 or something ridiculously cheap. Some of my go to dishes I order everything basically are: lobster yi-mein, pea teas w/garlic, japanese style Eggplant with beef, golden soft shell crab. It's always excellent. Love this place! Given that my place/residence is next door, I had high hopes for South Loop My Place and would like to see it do well. Unfortunately, these hopes were not fulfilled and the service was exceedingly poor. Arrived at 7:45 Friday night, was seated at 7:50, and placed order at 7:55 for three dishes. Half of the first diner's dish was placed on the table at 8:45, was consumed in its entirety, and then at 8:53 and 8:55 the other two dishes were placed. Immediately requested to go boxes and a check. We then received the other half of the first dish and left. I know it's new, but I'm worried this place won't last. We finished three pots of tea before being served. Food quality was average. :( Mapo tofu was very disappointing and bland. First impressions count and my first impression is pretty bad. My partner convinced me to order from them after reading the reviews instead of ordering from our usual place. I placed an order at 12:27pm. At 2pm I finally called them to ask where our food was, coincidentally at the same moment that the front desk called to tell me the food was here. What we got was cold, dry food. If there had been sauce on my General Tso's, I couldn't tell. If there has been sauce on my partner's orange chicken, he couldn't tell. Despite ordering my General Tso's not spicy, it arrived with a lot of hot chili peppers dumped on top. Needless to say, one and a half hours of waiting for cold, dry food that isn't even prepared as asked has left me not interested in ordering from them again. read more

Came here with a group of friends for a Friday night dinner. The place is packed. The clientele is mostly Chinese as expected. In our group of 8, only 1 person spoke Chinese and he ordered for us in Chinese. I assume the wait staff here understand English? As we were there during a prime time, there were no pricing specials so this review is based solely off of taste. I think compared to other places around the area, it tastes about average. Nothing wowed me, but nothing was terrible tasting either. We ordered 7 dishes and the total ended up being about $13/person. Lobster with EFu noodles - I liked the noodles! Pea pod tips - average Clams in black bean sauce - average Walnut shrimp - average Sizzling beef dish - didn't try this Soft shell crab - this was good Chow mein - average The only strange thing about it was we were not served rice during the meal which is something I've always had in the other Chinatown restaurants. read more

Oh late nights in Chinatown... There is something both magical and sad about late night cravings, especially if it accompanied by a long wait at a time all you want to do is get your guilty gluttonous eating in prior to crawling into your bed after a long night out. MyPlace (outside from it's confusing name, which is the butt of many of jokes between me and MyFriends) is always a welcoming place to eat past 12am. There usually isn't too bad of a wait during late night, and it provides relatively good service for Chinatown along with standard to above average food (in reality all the restaurants tastes the same in Chinatown after awhile). I haven't really sampled all the drinks at MyPlace, but the friends I typically bring here for smoothies all give them a strong endorsement. I typically stick to the traditional HK milk tea and half and half (half milk tea and half milk coffee) and they are relatively good. The food is pretty standard for a HK style cafe. Everything is relatively good, but I typically get either the Portuguese baked rice with chicken or salt and pepper pork chops. I also frequently get the congee because it's the lightest thing on the menu for late night eating. MyPlace also offers some fantastic value eats for breakfast, lunch, and snack time. These deals typically run from $3.50-$5.00 and come with a hot drink. Really hard to beat a full meal and drink for under $5 (even in Chinatown). Overall, is the food amazing? No. Is it above average? Sure. But the main appeal for me is the fact that I never feel rushed at MyPlace. They serve decent tea, decent drinks, and have pretty good service for Chinatown. They also feature two huge big screen TVs in the middle and frequently play whatever game is on at request. There have been many of nights where I've caught a basketball game while eating some standard Chinese food. They also stay open pretty late with a little to no wait time. read more

Whenever I'm in Chicago with my parents, they always want to go to My Place. They like the High Tea Specials (so cheap!!), large portion sizes, and speedy service. It's not the cleanest of places, but it does a great job of serving authentic Cantonese food. I've got a major soft spot for stuff like this since I grew up on it. I have a number of classics that I gravitate towards here, so I'll try to talk about them succinctly. -Shrimp Wonton Noodle Soup: the broth is simple and rich with a hint of sweetness. The wontons are pretty standard, but the whole thing is pretty good altogether. It's a great deal when you come for high tea. -Soy Sauce Chow Mein: this is my dad's favorite! It's a simple vegetarian dish that's got good robust flavor and just hits the spot when you just want noodles. -Beef Ho Fun: they do a great job of making this not oily at all. The beef isn't overdone and the noodles are also well executed. Substituting the meat with tofu is also pretty good. -Bitter Melon Scrambled Egg: a classic for me growing up. It's super simple, and the bitter melon is almost always fresh. Could use some more salt but that's just about it. -Roasted Quail: this off-menu dish (it's taped up on the wall, $2.50/each!) is such a steal! The quail is always fresh with great crispy skin. The delicate bird is served with a wedge of lemon, salt, and pepper and it never fails to please. It's guaranteed crispy skin with a flavor not unlike roast duck. And at $2.50 for one bird, I don't know why more people haven't had this. During my most recent visit, I also had one of the specials on the whiteboard. It was a dish with pea tips (dou miao), enoki mushrooms, and a sort of spongey vegetable (?) that my parents said was the insides of bamboo stalks. This was also super fresh and tasty, and a departure from the standard Cantonese dishes my family has. It's got great flavor and the sauce is on point. I know I'll come by here again when I'm in Chicago with my parents. Someday I'll try the all-you-can-eat hotpot, but for now, I'm very happy with the value that I'm getting for some of my favorite foods from childhood. read more

If the food weren't better here than Chi-Cafe and Sweet Station, this would be 2 stars. Service is just plain sucky which I doubt the management cares because they have decent business. There are always a lot of waiter/nesses floating around but if you ever need anything, have fun trying to get their attention. **Dine in or pick up, be sure to have patience waiting for your food.** Just today I had to rush the waiter after waiting for 35 minutes, but none of our four orders came. I absolutely hate to rush them on the orders because I know the waiters are not the ones cooking the food. However, the waiter quickly replied that "it's coming, it's coming" (which is mostly a lie) just to get us off his back and just told me to wait because the table behind us is also doing the same which makes no sense - they came in 20-25 minutes after us. My mom suggested that maybe they work on carry-on orders before dine-in ones, but I don't think so because the food is coming out of the kitchen once in a while, not as frequently as other surrounding Chinese restaurants. This place deserves 5 stars hands down. This place serves HK style cha chan teng (tea parlor) style food, but has a number of other dishes like Szechuan, hotpot etc. as well. Food is spectacular. Prices are very reasonable. Where else in Chicago can you find twin lobsters for $26 that is of good quality? Staff is fairly nice. If you know Chinese, it's even better (of course). It's Cantonese food. I judge the dishes if they have 'wok hei' and flavorful. It certainly meets all the criteria needed for good 'ol Cantonese food. It feels like the 'dai pai dong' restaurants that are so common in Macau/HK. If you're looking for a good, quick, affordable meal, this is the place. If you want to sit somewhere better, maybe this isn't the place for you. read more
