Naked Fish has been our 'go to' sushi restaurant for the past 8+ years. The quality of the fish is always good, portions are generous and affordable, our to-go orders are ready at the time they give us, and the waitstaff is always friendly. We've tried quite a few other sushi restaurants on the peninsula, and so far very few measure up to Naked Fish. Would definitely recommend! read more

I just came here for sushi with my kids. It's 5:45 looked through the menu they gave me and ordered. Waitress took the menus away and said sorry, wrong menu. No more happy hour. I hadn't realized the difference, but as I left, I noticed a giant poster outside saying HAPPY HOUR 4-6!!!! We came in late on Friday night, scrounging for something to eat for a late dinner. We were standing in between Red Brick Pizza and this place. Lovie says, "Hrm...let's see. Does Red Brick have beer? No. Naked Fish it is!" Glad to know through Lovie's eyes, Naked Fish had the upper hand because of the beer factor. Sometimes that's all that matters. Again, we walked in 10 minutes before they closed, and we were still welcomed with open arms -- we appreciated this gesture so much! We received free edemame while we perused the menu. I got the Bento Box dinner -- California roll, calamari teriyaki, tempura, rice, with soup and salad. All for $8.95...really can't beat it especially for dinner pricing. Everything was cooked to perfection, especially the calamari, which came out the perfect tenderness -- not at all tough or rubbery. Lovie got the Meet & Greet ribeye - steak sauteed with mushrooms and pineapple with a tall bottle of Sapporo. The sweetness and savory made for a really good dish to eat by itself. There really was no need for rice, which is rare to do with Asian dishes. Overall, it was a satisfying impromptu late dinner. The service itself was superior to most Japanese places I've been to. Yeah this place definitely doesn't deserve more than a 3 star average. Yelpers are definitely correct this time around -- I didn't think that such a new establishment could get such low reviews but sure enough, after trying them out, they definitely deserve low ratings. Vitals: Sunday at 730pm Party of 3 Items ordered: - Triple Threat -- chunks of seared tuna, albacore, and salmon (waitress kept saying "treat" instead of "threat" ...haha) - Firecracker Balls -- fried tuna in a battered ball served with some spicy mayo sauce and eel sauce - House Special Sushi Roll (forgot the name) - Some spicy roll with salmon (forgot the name as well, sorry) -- pretty much a CA roll with snow crab and salmon on top - Hamachi Kama - Large hot sake - Guava mojito The order in which we got our items was weird. We got the sake first, all our dishes minus the hamachi kama, then my guava mojito and lastly the hamachi kama. Er? How come my drink didn't come out first? It's not dessert. Anyway, the firecracker balls smelled FISHY and the batter was fried almost to a dark brown/black color. Any bozo knows that if it's fried that dark and it doesn't look pretty then YOUR OIL IS OLD SO CHANGE IT. YUCK. The other two sushi rolls and the hamachi kama were ok. Fish wasn't too fresh but it wasn't fishy at all. Go figure how the fried tuna ball was fishy yet the raw tuna was not. I wonder if they purposely use old fish and fry it so that we can't taste it. TOO BAD WE STILL DID. I'm an avid mojito drinker so I know what a good mojito is (go to Cantina, find Jason and have him make you one). At anyrate, their guava mojito was tooooooo minty. That's all bad. There needs to be a good balance between the actual mint flavor and the rest of the drink. SO, here's why I'm almost going to give Naked Fish 1 star but opted for 2 stars just to be a tad bit nicer. One of the workers came to us during the middle of our dinner and asked how everything was. $16 chirashi: - two very small pieces of very dark red CO2 gassed looking tuna - small piece of farmed salmon - a scoop of watery mushy mildly bitter uni (ends and scraps from the uni tray) - small piece of butterfish/walu/escolar/sooopa whyte toona (luckily in a very tiny quantity, so no anal leakage tonight, phew) - some shredded daikon (wow, never seen this on a chirashi before, but what a way to fill up space! Though it was needed to help kill some germs) - Big lump of wasaaaaaaaaaaaaaabi. - piece of cooked shrimp with tail (ebi) - small thin piece of white fish (looked like izumidai/tilapia) - I think there was one piece of albacore (no seared exterior bit, just the center meat) that was very lackluster (ie had better albacore before) - two small pieces of tamago (that was actually half decent, even if outsourced) and probably the most vinegared tasting sushi rice for a non Japanese run joint, not that it is saying much.... but the rice caught me by surprise...though the slightly vinegared flavor was the only good part...the rice itself was not that decent. If it was supposed to come with miso soup, me so did not get a bowl. But at least they gave a comp plate of edamame, maybe that was the salad. As a comparison, ~ $23.50 super deluxe chirashi somewhere else not too far away gets you thin delectable yet delicious slices of (and one of each of): - maguro - chutoro (if chef loves you longtime, maybe a small piece of otoro or kama toro) - juicy delicious tamago - madai (or hirame) - uni (way better quality) - ikura (if you're very lucky, shoyu-zuke and not the salted kind) - kanpachi (and if you're "in" there, shimaaji) - a piece of ebi, but it's properly prepared - salmon over sexcellent vinegared properly done sushi rice. Was craving sushi and although the reviews about this establishment were not favorable, I decided on it anyways due to convenience and the fact that it was Happy Hour (from 4:30-6pm). Happy Hour deals: 15% off special rolls $1.50 per piece of nigiri $2.50 per hand roll $3.50 per basic roll (e.g. CA roll, spicy tuna roll, Philadelphia roll) Deals on drinks too, but I didn't get any so I can't recall what they were Walked in and looks like they weren't busy at all. For food, boyfriend and I decided on: - Calamari: SKIP IT. There was barely any squid, just lots and lots of onions that disguised themselves as squid. The pieces that were actually calamari were cut so thin and small that they wouldn't even fit on my pinky finger. Boyfriend and I agree - worst calamari we've ever had! - California roll: Decent. Glad to know they didn't mess up a simple roll like this one. - Shrimp tempura hand roll: Good. Looking forward to trying more during HH. - Sake (salmon) nigiri: Boyfriend says the rice was a disappointment, but the fish itself was delicious. Really fatty and buttery. - Rainbow roll: Standard fishes, nothing special. Kind of a small roll imo, but it was HH so I wasn't surprised. If their rolls were this small during regular hours though, it would be a real rip-off... - Cherry bomb roll: Interesting... never encountered this roll before. It was bleh. Not memorable. Again, small portions. They also have an array of options for dessert which I'd like to try some time. I was surprised that it wasn't just standard mochi and green tea ice cream. A lot of the poor reviews I read had to do with their service so I had low expectations coming in. Surprisingly though, the waitresses were very attentive. They refilled our waters at least 3 times and checked in on us to see if we wanted to order anything more. Perhaps it was the fact that we were seated so close to the staff... so that's my recommendation for you! I did overhear the table beside us not receive one of their rolls though... I'd give a 3.5 if I could. As the other reviewers noted, the Happy Box is a pretty good deal. It's a big meal for less than $9.00. I tried the Red Caterpillar roll which was quite tasty but seemed a wee bit on the small side. For my main entree, I had the curry udon. The noodles were decent and the flavor was good but I'm not sure that I'd get it again. The decor is very modern and the staff is friendly. Most of the food that was ordered came out pretty fast. I thought it was strange that my friend's entree arrived before mine. The one thing that took forever was the tempura ice cream. Not for you, but for all the other employees who deserve it. That disrespectful waitress needs to look up what customer service means because obviously she doesn't know anything about it. So some friends and I decided to come because my friend's company designed the interior. Total FAIL. They didn't go with any of the lights or most of the designs they did and it is their loss. Their ceiling lights look cheap. Ok, but we're not here to talk about that. The prices are not too shabby. Plus, if you have those coupons they shoved in your face as you passed by, it will help a bit. Their box lunches are at a good price of $7ish dollars. You get soup (pretty legit miso), rice, salad, california rolls, and two choices. The salmon terriyaki was pretty good, but the portion is TEENY. The tempura is good...there's not too much batter and its very tasty. Chicken and beef, so so. Although the portion of the main dishes are small, you get quite full anyway. We also tried the dragon roll (ehhh) and the firecracker balls or something...that was okay as well. Should have been more crispy. It's a nice clean place with good service to enjoy a decent meal. Not really for big crowds. If you want better sushi in Millbrae, I would go to Zen Bistro (a bit more pricey though). Sorry but, cover up naked fish. read more

I really, really wanted to LOVE this place. It is close and convenient; near the spa, near the gym, near Trader Joe's.. what's not to like? Naked Fish, apparently. I was not impressed. Service was 3 stars. Food taste was 2 stars. Portion size was 2 stars. Pricey (what decent sushi isn't) Decor.. 1 star, at most. Of course, I am overlooking the undercooked calamari they served. The "batter" had clumped up and it was raw in the center of the clumps. If you are determined to try this place, I suggest you go during happy hour, which I believe is 4:30 to 6:30 PM. This is exactly the kind of restaurant that is A-OK. I've been waiting for this place for months because it's a hassle getting sushi from Burlingame and Sushi Sam's isn't open on certain days I have off. But anyways...the boyfriend and I came in one day for lunch and found it unpleasantly empty. That's usually a bad sign but since it's still in it's honeymoon period, we decided to ignore the telling signs and forge ahead anyhow. I ordered the bento box with the salmon teriyaki, 4 piece sushi and korean bbq along with a spicy tuna roll. The boyfriend ordered the cherry blossom roll and sunset roll? My bento box came out with the tiniest piece of salmon swimming in teriyaki sauce, cold bbq and warm sushi pieces. My spicy tuna roll found it's way next to the cherry blossom roll and the other roll showed up 10 minutes later. I guess their timing isn't quite there yet. It was interesting to note that they didn't offer small dishes to apply soy sauce and wasabi. I made do with the small compartments in the bento box and the boyfriend used his regular plate's corner but aside from that and the fact that they didn't serve tea, this place struck us as not being 100% there yet. read more

Sushi chef is Cantonese, and probably did not have valid sushi training at all. Bento boxes have 3 selections, but non of it will please most real Japanese food lovers. Beef Teriyaki was soaked in sweet sauce which was disgusting. The beef quality was like jerky. California rolls were probably made early in the morning and put in the fridge until needed to be served. Yeah, you might get cheap food. But cheap = Cheap quality and cheap taste, and maybe a day or two in the restroom if you were unlucky! BTW, they did go through 2 ownerships and many different staff! read more

I started coming here a few months ago, I usually come at least once per week for dinner and a couple of times a week for lunch. Some things on the menu are good and some are not so good. The service can be hit or miss. Last nights service was one of the worst I've ever had at a restaurant. We arrived and the place was basically empty. We asked our server about a few of the items that we haven't tried yet and she told us they were very popular but when we asked further questions she admitted she had never seen the dish. So if it's popular how come she has never saw it. There is no need to lie. They took our order and the food came, it seemed very bland. The server forgot one of the items and when we were almost done finally came to the table to say they forgot and did we want it. No sorry no kiss my ass no nothing. The final straw was when we wanted to leave. All the servers kept walking by as we were flagging them down, they just walked by us with blinders on. My girlfriend got up and walked to the kitchen to ask for boxes and the bill, they finally came over and gave us two small boxes that obviously weren't big enough for the amount of food we had. We sat there for another 10 minutes waiting for them to take my payment but again we were ignored, on two occasions when the server walked by I held up the check and waved it but still no one took it. You finally got it and I was able to get on with my life. So here is my tip for you guys, judging by your reviews I'm not the only guy that feels the way I do about your service. You are chipping away at the core of your business, customer service is everything , word of mouth is the best advertisement you can get. I can promise you this, it isn't just me that frequents your establishment for those lunches, it's also my 6 co workers. We will never set foot in your place again, your food is no where good enough to treat people the way we were treated last night. Lying to your customers, giving them incomplete orders and having them chase you down to pay you for that experience is unacceptable, but I guess I should consider myself lucky cause I wasn't one of the customers that got food poisoning. read more

For about $28, my boyfriend and I ordered: -The crunchy cannon roll (it was disgustingly oily & was topped with mustard sauce) -The 49er roll (decent) -Bento box with chicken katsu, beef teriyaki, and tempura (meh, meh, and meh) Basically, we were disappointed when we left because of the quality of food. The beef teriyaki was very tough to eat and I had to tear it from my mouth in order for it to be separated. The chicken katsu was more crunch than meat, and the tempura was a grease bomb. This time they had one with crab a wedge of avocado and hamachi with a little spiciness and yuzu sauce... They even let me name it since it was just created that day... "The G6 Roll", because it tastes so fly like a G6 (had to mention that)... We also tried the G.E.M. Roll (fresh salmon, Ikura, marinated crab with a spicy sweet sauce (yummy). Best 49er roll ever!! The Mango Tango roll is so unique, crisp and refreshing: Lump crab meat, rolled in thin cucumber served with mango sauce on top. A true delicacy. My favorite crunchy roll is the Super Dynamite. A bit on the spicy side but you can order it mild. Only been to this location. The happy hour is super legit. Great cocktails and discounted, high quality sushi. This place is consistently crappy when it comes to their service. Anytime I try to suggest this place, first thing out of everyones mouth is NOT how good the sushi is, but how BAD the service is. I wish they could get it together and change their bad service reputation. If it weren't for the to-be-expected awful service, this place would be thriving. I put up with the crappy service because the sushi really is that good. The clincher: once I came here with friends for happy hour. They charged me and my friend for two rolls we didn't order. They have more than once messed up the order and if ordering from grill, not sushi, it is over salted and dry!!! The Sashimi is mushy!!!!! C'mon guys its just a simple bento! And worst of all when it came out, my hunger meter went down dramatically. The portions were small, and the food was unappealing. I saw this place when it recently opened and decided to try it for the first time today for lunch. I really wanted to like this place, also. I live in the area and it was exciting to see a new japanese restaurant -- so I was hopeful. The decor is perfect but it could use some art to make it more upscale. Now to the food. I ordered the salmon, tempura and california roll combo. Although, I have to say that the food overall was good. However, I would like to point out that the food is more like imitation japanese food than really japanese. I told one of the servers/managers some of my critiques. Here they are in no particular order: - I asked if they had tsukemono but they only had kind of pickled cucumbers and it wasn't seasoned evenly. - The cut of the salmon was a little bit strange. They were small and they were not cut like a steak-cut. - When I oredered green tea, they gave me the genmai-cha or roasted rice green tea. I asked about this and she said that it was the tea they always served. I pointed out though that it was not sushi tea (which is macha or sencha). It's a little bit odd honestly. - The tempura was light and crispy but not quite right. Something seemed to be missing here. - The miso soup was too light and needed more flavor. It just had too much water added to it. - The salad dressing was a little bit watery and the lettuce not as green and crisp as it could be. All in all, I spent a total of $10.00 with tip. But I come here a lot and I've never really had a problem with the food but one day I was eating my salad and found a hair in it ever since then I have to carefully look at my food before eating to make sure there isn't anything in it. Service: 3/10 The service here is just awful they are nice but they take way too long to check on you to see if you're ready to order or if you're ready for the check or to refill water or even just to stop by to see if you need anything else. Take out: 6/10 I've eaten in the restaurant as well as ordered for pick up/ delivery it usually takes 20mins for them to get your order ready and I've gone a couple times to pick up and sometimes they haven't even put together my order so they rush and end up forgetting things. I'm finally writing reviews on yelp because of my horrible service at naked fish. I ordered an unagi roll and noticed there was only a small piece in my roll. So I asked for the manager, this short haired women, she came over and told me that the roll contains two pieces. I showed her the small piece that was in my roll and asked if she could give me another order. She refused and continued to say that each roll has two pieces. Well OBVIOUSLY if it had two pieces I wouldn't be complaining.. now would I? Then she called me a liar and even had the audacity to ask if I counted how many pieces were in my roll. Yes, one. She just walked away and I'm blown away by the lack of customer service. Awful! Let me start by saying that we order here for pickup pretty regularly since we moved to Millbrae 6 months ago. This was our second larger order for delivery, and it took an hour and 15 minutes, let me also note that I live on Broadway, a 5 minute walk from the restaurant. All of the hot food we ordered was cold when it arrived. Both myself and a rep from eat24 called to discuss this with the restaurant and the employees were extremely rude, and offered nothing to compensate for the fact that we were delivered old and cold tasting food that was basically inedible. No offer to remake the order, no discount or refund. Just rude and blaming us for the fact that they had a hard time parking. Whelp. They lost a regular! read more

The less than skilled woman answering phone didn't properly record delivery information despite repeating it correctly while taking order so the delivery guy couldn't contact me when he got to my hotel the fish wasn't terrible and delivery guy was really nice about the situation, but forgot to give chopsticks with delivery If you're stuck at a hotel out here it's not a terrible delivery choice, but consider a pizza. read more

When I'm all out of options for Japanese restaurants and want something cheap, Naked Fish is my choice. The decor of the restaurant is very modern. It's clean all the times I've been there and honestly they don't ever get that busy so no worries about waiting long for a table. I've gotten their sushi lunch combo before but now most of the time I just get their Happy Dinner bento boxes. It's $10 and you get three items+miso soup AND salad. What a steal!! For three items at other places, these bento boxes can run up to $15. I like my box to be a combination of beef teriyaki, tempura, and four slices of sashimi. Their sashimi is nothing special so I never go crazy over it, but I do however go crazy over their beef teriyaki. They cook it perfectly! Sometimes there's too much sauce which makes it a bit too salty, but otherwise, the texture of the beef is tender. Three stars because I wouldn't come to Naked Fish for their fish (which is the reason I would go to a Japanese restaurant anyway...), but for their cheap bento boxes? Yes please! read more

Was in for dinner a few months back. Lets keep this short. My experience was terrible. As we walked into the place, it was half empty but had to wait to be acknowledged and to be seated. Menus were given. We waited again for someone to come back to us and take our order. We waited again for about 25 minutes to get our food. Once again, this restaurant was half full. Maybe they had a ton of take out orders but............nobody came to apologize for the lateness of our meal, nobody bothered to make any eye contact, waitress was serving another table and answering calls on a wireless phone FTW!!!! I told my boyfriend that once we hit the "30 minute" mark and we still didnt have our food, I was walking out. Lo and behold, it came on the "29th minute"!.
