We had a girls night out and decided to try out this restaurant because it was close to the freeway for everyone. When my sister told me that we were going to Naked Fish, I had to ask my hubby "Where is Naked Ladies?" He looked at me twice and then gave me a strange-looking face. I didn't know what I was thinking. Anyway, my mother-in-law knew the place (of the restaurant) and gave me instructions to get there safely at night. I followed the GPS and found a space right in front of the restaurant. My lucky night, but then the other driver took her time and I was on a frontage road, blocking about 5 cars. No place for me to pull to the side and let the cars pass. After a long minute has gone by, people were honking at me. I found out later that my sister, who was in the third car, was also honking because other people were doing it. My sister-in-law told me that there is additional parking below the basement of the strip mall. Just follow the arrow. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and is very clean. I chose the "Happy Dinner Bento Box" for $10.99. You can pick three different items, which comes along with miso soup and salad. The food is decent, but they drown the meat with the dark brown terayaki sauce and the beef was dry. The tempura and sushi were good. Overall, Naked Fish is okay and the prices are good. If I could give zero stars I would based on customer service (or lack there of). It took them an exceptionally long 7 minutes to seat us (open table and not busy) 7:20p on a Wednesday night. When we were finally sat at the sushi bar where there were no others sitting, we were not even acknowledged. After about 5 minutes the waitress took our drink order and drinks and miso soup were brought promptly after that. Note, we had still not been acknowledged by either of the two sushi chefs. I tasted my miso soup and nearly spit it out. In my life (43 years) I have never encountered miso soup that straight tasted like they soaked a dead fish in water and heated it up. Still sitting there being ignored for a minimum of another five minutes we left $6 on the bar top and walked out. We are brand new to Millbrae and this will definitely NOT be our new weekly sushi night out. read more

My friend suggested to go to this place for dinner. Boy, it was horrible. My chicken sukiyaki was way over salty. I could not even consume any of the soup.... Let alone, I had to take a sip of tea every bit I took. However, their salmon was fresh. We were seated in a isolated corner away from everyone else, resulting in NO SERVICE what so ever. Although the bento box portions aren't necessarily as generous as a few of its restaurant counterparts, the food is consistent and never disappoints. Conveniently located near Kohls, we needed a place to satisfy our hunger pangs. Learning about Happy Hour which goes from 4:30pm-6pm each day, we thought we would give it a try. It's nice but I wouldn't go back. Yes, a large hot sake was only $3 and they have some good apps for $4.95 however the place just didn't seem very comfortable or all that friendly. The menu items were okay, as well as the food...but the service was horrible. My husband and I went in on a Tuesday night and the restaurant was not packed to the gills, but at least 3/4 of the tables were filled. We had to wait over 50 mins just to get our food. There was no apologies, and they didn't even comp any items on our bill. They just acted as if nothing was wrong. Tip: If you decide to check out this restaurant...don't go hungry. read more

I love this place! It's my local go-to Japanese restaurant when a craving hits! I honest do not understand all the negative reviews on here, this place really is not that bad. I personally am not the biggest fan of sushi I tend to order other things like katsu, noodles, etc, but at this place I will sometimes order a California roll and I will enjoy it! The quality of the food is good, service is good, ambiance is good, but not out of this world that's why I give it 4 stars. Total Time Spent at Naked Fish: 42mins Total Time Eating: 5mins Do the math, wait was way to long for ordering a simple "happy dinner box" no special orders, no appetizers, nothing out of the ordinary. It took the waiter 5 mins to even bring us menus or tea or water. I ordered a "happy dinner box", and ironically I was very unhappy. The price is $8.99 for three items, I ordered beef teriyaki, saba teriyaki, and salmon teriyaki. For $9 I guess its reasonable for the restaurant, horrible service, long wait, no refills on tea, disrespectful(for ignoring us when we wanted menus and when we had the check, they just walked past us even when we shouted at them). The food was barely decent, the teriyaki sauce tasted diluted and had no thickness, its basically watered down teriyaki sauce. The saba was small, salmon was small, and the beef was small in portions, but I guess it matches the price. Not to brag, but I am no first-time sushi/japanese eater, compared to many sushi places in the area this particular one is at the bottom of the list. I do not know, maybe I came in at the wrong time...still my overall experience at this restaurant was horrible. I highly recommend not going to this place if you like authentic or even semi-good food. I haven't tried the sushi because after ordering the bento box which took more than half an hour I just wanted to eat my food and leave. There was some creativity and ingenuity in the menu, but actions speak louder than words. The ambience was ok, music didn't fit the restaurant, and like I said service was horrible, I didn't even get a good bye when I left, and I walked slowly. Went there about two weeks ago and did not like the food at all. I went there because it was closeby. I ordered some combination with nigiri and a roll with seafood tempura. Their specialty rolls are okay but their nigiri and the rainbow weren't that great. THe seafood tempura took forever and actually came with imitation crab! It looked like the batter just soaked up all the oil because it was see through! Service could have been better. Their ice cream dessert for 2 scoops of green tea ice cream was the cheap kind - so not worth it! Very overpriced for what you get although the interior was nice and clean. Decent place for dinner with very average sushi. The plus is that the prices are very decent, and they have a good happy hour. But all of the times I have been here, there are always dirty tables that sit there the whole time you're eating. You can sit be seated the whole time next to a pile of dirty dishes and they won't clean it until 30 minutes after, if ever. It's very unappetizing. Decent food, good prices, AWFUL service. I went to Naked Fish yesterday with my wife and two friends. Decor was nice and there was no wait (6pm on Sunday). I ordered a spicy scallop roll which came promptly. It was good, but overly spicy. We then ordered three of their bento dinners and the sea bass. The waitress warned us the portion size was going to be small, but my friend ordered it anyway. We got the three bento meals soon thereafter, but the sea bass was nowhere to be found. After we were almost done with the meal, the waitress came over to tell us that they forgot to cook the fish. Wow, are you kidding me? My friend ended up getting the bento box dinner and it arrived after everyone finished their meal. The table next to ours seemed to suffer a similar fate with their order too. Suffice to say, the service is absolutely terrible. It's too bad because the price was reasonable and food was pretty decent. I suggest only getting take out from here. read more

This place I am giving two stars due to the service being absolutely terrible but the sushi is good and inexpensive during happy hour. I have been here a couple of times but the main reason for this review is because of my last experience. The restaurant had just opened and the server unlocked the door and saw my friend, her kid and myself outside the door and walked away. We then walked in and she walked away to the bar area and we had to ask if we needed to seat ourselves. Later she comes by to ask if we were ready and was very rude upon taking our order. Our server did not check on us nor did she acknowledge us when we tried to ask for the check. It took us about 20 min just to flag her down for our check. We're new to the area and heard that 3rd Ave. in San Mateo is the best place for authentic Japanese food. After dining at such a place and being way less than impressed, we decided to try Naked Fish, which is in walking distance to our house. It was pretty good! Not the best, but far from the worst. Everything tasted fresh and good. Portions were decent. The price was great, especially for lunch. I've been back several times and have never had a negative experience. Sushi isn't too bad, good ambiance, and prices are decent. However.. we were given a dirty soy sauce plate TWICE. I usually judge service based on how many times they check on you and how often they refill your water without having to ask. With that said, the only time she came to our table was to give our food and she NEVER refilled my water. I used to love this place when it first opened. Back than I noticed the management staffs speak mandarin. Me and hubby used to come here for date night. Food was good price was decent and they offer happy hour with discount on food. I was there on 8/10/2016 at happy hour, wait staff was rude. We were asked to order drinks the second we sat down and menu was just handed to us. Moment later , the waitress was standing by our table getting ready to take our order but suddenly taking order of our neighbor table .Wait staff don't even know general dinning etiquette!?!?. I ordered a mango martini; the drink came and the glass was sticky. The whole freaking glass was sticky! Whoever fixed my drink didn't bother to clean hands after making mango puree and just pick up glass and get it finish and send it out. I expected clean food handling especially in a sushi restaurant. if it gets that sloppy as simple as making a drink, how can I expect clean " raw fish" ?? And the drink and "raw fish" came from the same station. I have to wet my napkin with my tea to clean the glass. In this experience, me and hubby went home with bad, raging explosive diarrhea. We took turns to speckled our toilet all night long. Long story short, it was just bad, my mind was iffy when I had the sticky glass. If you know your local Japanese restaurant close at least half a day per week, that is because its owed by Japanese. They have high standard on cleanliness and proper handling on raw fish. If you encounter a mandarin ( Taiwan) sushi chef or management of the place, I would still expect a decent experience. If you encounter Cantonese sushi chef, lower your expectation and be a good patron once and don't ever go back no matter how enticing the price is. I am speaking in stereotype and knew in my heart that I should not be judging, but to hell I am judging this place!!!! The whole station was speaking Cantonese which all of our food was prep. Why didn't i say anything at the moment ? I know better not to argue or flight with ppl in a restaurant, and I won't put the "fixed" food or drink in my mouth after I rejected it or made a compliant. i really like this spot. i would recommend to sit at the sushi counter. for me the sushi chefs opened up to me. conversation between you and your sushi chef is vital. he needs to understand your pallet and your needs when it comes to sushi. the happy hour is fun and highly recommend. lots of items on their HH list. my favorite is the ahi poke with light sauce. if you're in the area i would recommend this sushi spot. final review: 4 stars :) side note: the manager of this spot should really talk to the 24 hour gym upstairs. members dropping weights on the floor is pretty annoying. read more
