Over-crowded due to its upcoming closure and this being "the last Passover." Pickles were a hit or a miss. I had a grilled cheese which was a grilled cheese; however the rye bread could have been more fresh. But it wasn't really so much about the food. The scene was chaotic. Watching the good-natured staff handle the mob was entertaining. I'm told the "ancestors" are closing because it's "too much to deal with." We were looking for some light choices after a long day and looking at the recommendations for Nate'n Al's, Good choice, food was great, large portions so we all took home some left overs. Staff was very friendly with an authentic deli environment. Reasonable prices. The deli sandwich was packed sky high with meat, and the word at the table was the homemade pot pie was good to the last spoonful. I loved this deli. I went there with my sister on a Friday night. We were both hungry and looking for a good place to eat. I suggested Nate's. I had eaten there with my mother many years ago. We went in and the place was not that crowded. I had a pastrami sandwich and she ordered a salad. The server who waited on us was a hilarious. She would imitate certain people, and made us laugh. She was the high light of the evening. The food was great. My sister thought otherwise. She would have rather gone for sushi, or steak. I chose a deli, that brought back memories of our mother. Nate and Al's a Beverly Hills landmark. They just recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. It's a classic NY deli right smack in the heart of Beverly Hills. This place is a neighborhood favorite of mine and countless others that both locals and deal makers frequent. There is nothing fancy about it, it is what it is, which is what's makes it special. Many of the servers have been there forever which is cool. That's what is so retro about it. It's know for being a place for power breakfast where countless Hollywood deals are made. They offer a classics NY deli counter with endless options for salads, sliced meats, smoked fish and all the wonderful things that a great deli should offer. They also have a full menu as well with all the dishes one would expect in a NY deli. Food is just good straight forward comfort food that's fresh and simple. My favorite breakfast dish is the grilled onions and eggs, potato latkes with apple sauce and sour cream. Favorite dinner dish is the grilled turkey patty with grilled onions, mushrooms with mashed potatoes and gravy . Comfort food at its best I also like the hot pastrami sandwich on rye with deli mustard and the fresh baked potato. Family owned and operated, the owners know most the locals by first name and alway are around taking care of their guest. There are so many pictures on the walls which is very cool to look back at the history. If you haven't experienced Nate and Al's , your missing a one of a kind experience taking you back 65 years to old Beverly Hills. The food was passable -- we ordered a pastrami and a corn beef sandwich, and asked for both to be lean. This may have been a mistake as they were both exceedingly dry. The rye bread was okay, nothing special, but pales in comparison to Langer's rye bread. The cole slaw was clearly freshly made, but it had an odd taste that was quite unpleasant -- neither of us ate more than one or two bites. Even had the service been acceptable, I would not be rushing back for the food. The main reason for the 1 star rating was the deplorable service. I had to drop off my elderly mother (on a walker) to go park the car next door (Crate and Barrel's parking structure). Before taking the car, I went into the restaurant with my mother. It was almost empty when we arrived at 4:30pm. We got seated and I then left to deal with the car. It took about 10-15 minutes to get back to the restaurant (lots of traffic in the structure) and my mom said that no one had come over to ask if she wanted a drink despite several waitresses standing around doing nothing and her trying to catch their eye. She finally flagged one down and got something to drink. No one came around to see if she wanted to place an order while waiting for me. When I got back and another waitress came to take our order, she did not address my mother and spoke only to me. There is nothing wrong with my mother's mind or ability to understand and speak on her own, but she was treated as if she were non-existent for the entire time we were in the restaurant. At one point, she went to the restroom and after a while, came back to the table saying she hadn't been able to open the door to the ladies room so hadn't gone. She said that two waitresses (including ours) were standing just around the corner from the restroom and had pointed her in that direction, but didn't provide any help when she was trying to get the door open. I got up to take her to the restroom, having just left my credit card with the check and having asked for a box for a left over sandwich. When we got back from the restroom, the table had been cleared leaving an empty box and no food. Another person (manager? cook?) offered to make us another sandwich, but at that point my mother was almost in tears and said that all she wanted to do was to leave. Nate 'n Al's is a restaurant that has customers of all ages, but most likely, a good number of elderly customers. That my mother felt humiliated and invisible ruined an early Mother's Day meal for both of us. Nate 'n Al's needs to do a much better job training their wait staff -- no customer should be discriminated against for any reason, including age or disability. read more

I heard about the establishment at LA's Best Pastrami. I was so disappointed when I received my Rueben Sandwich, bread was soaking with butter, not enough meat and the cheese was not melted. So far, Canter's still beat them by far when it comes to Rueben sandwich. read more

I have no idea if this place is a Beverly Hills mainstay or what but went went in for breakfast our last day in Beverley Hills. We got seated right away but the line started forming right after we got there. It is a old school dinner (which I happen to love). We had a real nice breakfast. Some omelets and a bagel with cream cheese. Omelets were huge! They also serve the coffee in a huge mug which was great because you don't need refills as often. The wait staff is running around like maniacs but it seems everyone has their role and it works pretty well. Food came out pretty fast and was nice and hot. I would definitely go back! read more

My first 4 stars. I have to say that unfortunately Nate n' Al Delicatessen & Restaurant receives my first 4 stars. But hey, better solid 4 than something less. But anyways on to the review. Ok, so this is of course only one experience and I'm sure my next one would be a five star if I can make a next trip. Of course I would like to but I only eat 3 meals a day and they are usually free meals, so... I am familiar with a few delis in LA and particularly in Beverly Hills since its the area I spend most of my time for work. I was about 45 minutes early from where I had to be and decided to try their food. I was greeted very nicely and sent to booth. The deli area had a lot of pastries and cream cheeses and salads from what I saw, more variety than the delis I am familiar with. The prices where reasonable for a deli as well. I decided to try their Chicken Teriyaki sandwich as the teriyaki sauce and pineapple sounded really delicious combo. The waitress took my order which was a cabbage soup and the sandwich. Either she was busy or was having a tough day. She was gruff and dare I say, "elderly" which is normal for a deli. I never had the cabbage soup before and wanted to give it a try. I got my soup first and that will be the last soup that of that kind I will have. I learned something that day. I don't like cabbage soup. Lol. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure for many people its an excellent soup and they like it, but I guess I just wasn't a fan of it. That's alright. I learned something that day and was glad to try it. Cabbage soup is too sweet and rich for my blood. But I had to finish the soup. Heck I ordered it. The sandwich arrived and it looked more plain than I thought. The waitress didn't even ask if I needed anything else. She just walked away. I figured she was busy. It's fine. I am an easy camper... Maybe too easy though. I'm not a hard guy to please. I looked at the sandwich and the chicken didn't look like it has much teriyaki on it and I didn't see any pineapple. I thought to myself maybe I overlooked that the chicken was cooked in a pineapple sauce or dip instead of an actual pineapple slice on the sandwich. I should have been more adventurous and opened the sandwich but I figured it was ok. So I ate. It tasted very bland and I figured I didn't get to the part that I wanted, (the pineapple and teriyaki sauce). As I had more bites I realized something was wrong. Something was terribly wrong! This wasn't a chicken teriyaki sandwich at all. She gave me a plain chicken sandwich. I was let down! I was sure I knew that I ordered the teriyaki sandwich. Maybe she didn't hear my order clearly. I was a bit disappointed. The time was going by and she didn't seem to make an effort to see me or notice me. I didn't want to be that annoying customer who has to say "Excuse me!" so she could come over, I just figured with good service after a few minutes she would come by to check up on me. She didn't come at all and I didn't want to wait, I had 15 minutes and didn't want to leave late. At this point I didn't want to make a scene. Drama?? I don't have time for that! Complain, gosh I'm not one of those customers who need to complain about why a complicated order would come out wrong. I'm not complicated at all. Life doesn't have to be like that. But what a tasteless time it turned out to be. When she finally came around, she offered me dessert. Goodness I already lost my appetite and I didn't want to complain and possibly make her day worse. I'm not sure if she was having a bad day but she clearly wasn't in the mood or someone pissed her off. She was friendly when offering dessert and dropping off the bill but at this point I was ready to go. I am prolly being generous with the 4 stars but I do believe this is a good place so I will have to try again. Maybe with she has had a kick of cabbage soup and caffeine she could be more alert and maybe with some nerve I will complain louder than to just simply wait and hope like a dumb idiot that my waitress will come by. read more

The new menu is terrible. They took away tortilla Bri, a well known customer favorite. They also took away the tri salad. What deli doesn't offer tuna, egg or chicken salad? They are charging extra if you want chicken and carrots in your chicken noodle soup! An egg breakfast(egg whites, toast, fruit and bacon) is $17! The food was good. I had a pastrami sandwich and it was great. The potatao salad was tasty, and the pickles are awesome. However, the service was TERRIBLE. Our waitress was very rude. I asked for extra pickles and she made a loud grunt!. She was very bossy and seemed burned out. Also, when I paid the cashier was yelling at me because I had was paying with a $50 bill. Our check was $42. I do not understand her problem. I asked to speak to the manager and she said she was not there, Of course. Maybe dining in is a different experience but after waiting for 2 hours for a Greek salad and turkey pastrami sandwich we were left completely disappointed. We came here to get a snack which turned into an early dinner. We shared a pastrami sandwich and vegetable soup. This is a New York style deli and the atmosphere sure felt like it from the food to the customers to the waitress. The sandwich was delicious, certainly not your typical pastrami sandwich you find in LA. The potato salad that came with the sandwich had too much of an egg taste for me. The vegetable soup was good considering it is not a favorite of mine. Our waitress did a good job but didn't bother asking what bread or side we wanted with our sandwich so if you don't want the standard better speak up! I ate at this restaurant last Thursday morning. Had the lox with scrambled eggs and cottage cheese with fruit. After I finished the meal I started to get the chills and rushed to the nearest rite aid because I knew what was coming. I had diarrhea and felt completely sick after. It turns out that the cottage cheese was spoiled/had some kind of virus that gave me the stomach flu. And to this day (7 days) I been fighting this flu. The Tuna sandwich I ordered was small for the over priced Beverly Hills sticker. A regular diner gives a bigger and just as good sandwich. The tuna was cold and tasted fresh, the small amount they actually give you on the pathetic toasted rye sandwich. If you go for the half sandwich and soup, I can imagine you needing to order two sets. The matzoh ball in the super small bowl was good. Nothing amazing. Can't they spare the soup? A joke. Small bowl. Really. Had to ask for the pickles and kraut to be placed on the table. I guess that is a current trend- not to give you stuff unless you know you should have the stuff. We waited a bit to get the waitress to attend, but she was nice. Family had meaty sandwichs, not too bad, but still, smallish. Tasty and salty enough to eat. Nothing exciting anywhere and nothing noteworthy about the food. We have not gotten sick yet. A big plus. When you start judging a meal after eating it by whether you get sick or feel well afterwards, you know you were at a place that you just are not too thrilled with. It is nice that they give seniors some work to do at this place. The staff were nice enough. Do people in LA really get used to this kind of "deli" and write so effusively about it? Do they know what a NY Deli is? Did former New Yorkers forget so easily? Did they all drink the Nate n Al's deli Kool Aide? Not the worst, but two and a half stars, maybe. Would not go back again. My GF and I were greeted by a big crummy looking host with crummy looking old Reboks. He looked like a bouncer, not someone at a family restaurant. When entering you will immediately notice all the old folks and middle aged people with their likely parents. There was one couple in their 30s. Waitress was ok but had that used and abused look and manner. I had an excellent corned beef on rye, GF had an average pastrami on rye. Good cold slaw. Rye bread was excellent and I appreciated the very cold glasses for my two Amstal Lites and GF one house chardonnay. Bill was 50.60 with tax. I will return only if with someone who wants to go there. Let me start by saying, I love delis. Seriously, it's pretty much my number one go to choice for a restaurant. I've gone to almost every deli here in LA, and this one was definitely my least favorite. We got French Dip, Reuben, and Grilled Cheese. Easy, right? Roast Beef was dry as the freakin' Sahara. They were out of french bread so I got it on a soggy onion roll. Shoestring fries were tiny and oily. Reuben was passable, but wasn't toasted enough to melt the cheese. Again, the meat was super dry. Grilled cheese was the worst. Unmelted cheese on boring white bread. Steak fries, meh. Service was poor. Food took a long time...3 sandwiches took almost 40 minutes, and there were only 6 other tables in the restaurant. Go to Canter's or Greenblatt's...you'll be much happier. read more

Vastly over-rated. Resting on its laurels and has been for the last twenty years. The food is okay, but at these prices it should be great. The only thing this place has going for it is its location on North Beverly Drive. Facing no real competition in the "triangle" it has not needed to compete. The Nosh is a dreary place away from all the action and the last real challenger - The Carnegie Deli - closed down many years ago. Factors Deli down on Pico is not in the same "demographic" even though it is consistently popular with the eating public. The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company on South Beverly might have been a contender, but it has a limited menu so it's not really a threat. So we're left with Nate 'n Al's and that's that. The deli counter service is inept. We recently had a big order to go and they left out an item. By the time we got it home it was too late to go back and all we got was a lukewarm apology. A minor nit, perhaps, but the booths are also very uncomfortable. It's like trying to eat in coach class on an airplane. Try to get a table against the far wall if you can. read more

We stopped by this morning for brunch / lunch - I say brunch / lunch because if you're a brunch person, like my sister-in-law and I, they've got eggs, pancakes, lox, the works. We had the french toast with a side of fresh fruit and the house lox on an onion bagel. I'm a huge a fan of smoked salmon and this did not disappoint! The guys went for the crowd favorite, the New York and it was spectacular. The meat was done just right, tender and salted to perfection (most places I've been so far have either oversalted or overcooked the pastrami to within an inch of its life), served warm on a double rye with slaw. Come early on a Sunday morning (we arrived around 10) and there's street parking available everywhere for free till 12. We'll be coming back again for the sandwich for sure! read more

I've been coming to this place since I was in a high chair. I cut my first tooth on a frozen bagel on a string here, and will come here till I'm old. As a native of Beverly Hills, I can say with certainty that this was always and still is the best restaurant here. The food is always perfect, the waitresses are like beloved aunties, who treat everyone like royalty, and the ambience is like the very best delis of New York City. I love this place, my family loves this place and I'm proud to bring newbies here who want to see the REAL Beverly Hills. This is the place to go!
