I usually come here for breakfast. Now that greenblatts went out of business this is my new favorite Jewish deli.

I had to give them 4-stars instead of 5 because the service was, well, weird. The food, per usual, was excellent and ordinarily I eat at the restaurant or order in advance and pick it up but, this time, I was 'down the block' and figured I'd walk in and order. So, in addition to now allowing regular dining inside, they've changed their procedures a bit. You used to be able to order at the deli counter and then you were given a ticket which you took to the cashier to pay and then you returned to the deli to pick up your food. Now, you order and pay the cashier and your order is transmitted to the deli. There was a sign by the cashier that said this but for those of us used to striding to the deli, the sign wasn't noticed. Maybe a friendly sign over the deli counter would be helpful? (I wonder how many times per day the deli men have to re-direct customers to the cashier as they did for me). Waiting for the food was a frustrating experience. The cashier had beckoned me to have a seat in the dining room but I chose to admire the food in the deli case but I found the area to be a superhighway of people coming and going so I was constantly stepping out of the way. There were a row of chairs in the window at the front end of the deli counter, a place that would have been ideal for waiting, but I didn't notice them at first and once I did, there were lots of people looking at the cookies there so it was hard to squeeze in and have a seat. I can't really blame anyone for not being more vocal about me having a seat in the dining room but as the room filled with customers, I felt weird sitting at one of the few empty tables left. The cashier had told me that my name would be called but I heard no one's name for a long while although I did see some bags of food emerge from the kitchen and be placed on the shelf that faced the deli. I assumed that these were for messengers to pick up. Eventually, I heard a woman drop a bag onto this shelf and very softly say: "carol". I doubt anyone besides she and I would have heard it. Then, another customer starting looking through the bags, grabbed one of the employees and then he told her something and he nodded. A minute later, he emerged with her food and I tried to get his attention but he was gone in a flash. I, too, examined the bags on the shelf and, sure enough, the latest bag deposited there was mine. (No one announced it). By this time, I was hungry so I walked up the street, ascended the steps next to Crate N Barrel, grabbed a free table and tore open the bag -- only to find that the bag contained no utensils or napkins. As said, the food was still great but for $30+ for a sandwich and 3 plain, dry bagels, they could have announced my order and asked me if I needed utensils. read more

Nate and Al's has been around for over 70 years because the pastrami sandwiches have stood the test of time. I liked the pastrami sandwiches and the chicken noodle soup a lot. When you are in the area be sure to stop by and have a better than normal lunch. read more

My tongue has been spoiled by the pastrami and corned beef at Kat'z Deli in NYC, so many of my experiences with these sandwiches haven't been able to live up to that quality. Although Nate 'n Al's wasn't as good as Kat'z, it came pretty darn close. I think I've found my new favorite Jewish deli. Pastrami Sandwich - The pastrami was perfectly seasoned and cooked. It wasn't too salty and it breaks apart so easily as you bite into it. Great execution. Hollywood - Corned Beef on rye was absolutely amazing. The rye bread was so soft and the corned beef was one of the best that I've ever had. Matzo Ball Soup - this was my first positive experience with matzo ball soup. It wasn't overly salty like my past experiences and the broth was flavorful. Service: Could be better. They didn't show up once to check on us, but I was enjoying my sandwich so much I just let it go. read more

I'm a deli aficionado and anytime I come across a deli I haven't tried I usually order a bagel with lox sandwich. The lox sandwich is my constant, my control. As simple as it looks few get it right. This place is in the majority. I gave them two stars because they were prompt and it was clean food where they fell short is I'm almost positive they used to Thomases or supermarket bagel. No frills on the sandwich no red onion no tomato no capers no love for $11.95 not only was it the saddest bagel I've had in recent memory but the lox and cream cheese could have come from stater brothers rather than a deli. read more

Food was ok, maybe a little bit better than Ok, on a scale of 1 - 10, if 5 is a random place that you don't even remember, this would be a 6. Old American Style menu that I believe hasn't been updated for a Millennia. And they still serve plastic straws! Their portions are enormous, way too much food on a plate, I just don't know if anyone finishes their entire meal. I came in here only because I heard they were bought and planning on moving down the street so it won't be anymore good old "Nate'n Al Delicatessen". There's something so unique about a cozy diner serving simple comfort foods existing in the midst of the flash and pizzazz of Beverly Hills. Coming from a far, your mental picture of Beverly Hills is all shi-shi bistros, overpriced salads and white linens. Nate'n Al's is anything but that but is still a winner in my books. It looks like, save for a few minor clean ups over the years, that it's holding onto a cute vintage diner aesthetic from the 60s/70s, and you know what, it works! There's a massive deli counter for take out or bulk meat buying to the left and an endless number of seats (but somehow still a line up - goes to show how popular they are). I consider myself fortunate to have grown up in a suburb of Toronto, Canada with a vibrant Jewish community, and because of that have had the privilege of growing up as much on their comfort foods as my own cultures. You can give me a pastrami or corned beef on rye (or make it a Reuben if you really want to tease me) with a couple of massive pickles and a cherry soda any day of the week for lunch and I'm good! The weather was nice enough that we managed to snag a spot on the patio for people watching. I ordered a matzo ball chicken soup (aka Jewish penicillin) a half reuben and of course a few pickles. Thank god I went with the half, that ish was HEAVY, and stacked way high. The sandwich was delicious, and the matzo HUGE, combined I was full and satisfied and ready for a nap. Has the Pastrami sandwich with Swiss on rye. Good food and pastrami was lean and tasty. David was our server and was outstanding. My only reason for 4 versus 5 stars was that the amount of pastrami on the sandwich was a little skimpy given the price and my experience at other deli's. read more

For the most part, I like delis for their sandwiches. I wouldn't necessarily call Nate'n Al's a deli. It's more of a diner with a deli inside. With that said, we felt a little out of place because it seems like Nate'n Al's is a gathering spot for the elderly population. We were probably the only people in there under 30 and it was a full restaurant. We didn't mind but it was just an odd feeling for sure. But then again, the restaurant itself IS old so I guess it makes sense. We ordered the New York (Hot Pastrami, Cole Slaw and Russian Dressing), a Turkey Sandwich and a bowl of Matzo Ball Soup with egg noodles. All sandwiches come with your choice of potato salad or coleslaw. The sandwiches are enormous. You can order one sandwich and share. We took most of our food home because of the sheer size. My husband who is a carnivore through and through even made a comment that his sandwich had too much pastrami. With that said, I didn't think the sandwiches tasted all that great. They were dry and didn't have enough flavor. Their saving grace were the pickled cucumbers which added some much needed acidity. We enjoyed the bowl of soup though. It was warm and filling with their noodles. I don't think we'll ever be back because I prefer quality over quantity. There's no real point in having extra large sandwiches if you have no desire to eat the leftovers later. Extremely slow service and they weren't that busy. Also, I ordered a Beyond Burger and what they brought was definitely not what I ordered, rather more then likely a Garden burger. I spoke to the waiter about tans he agreed and took the plate back to talk with the kitchen. 10 minutes later he brings the same thing back and just shrugged his shoulders. I took a bite and could tell it wasn't vegan. While they did finally remove the charge I left hungry. read more

Hadn't been to Beverly Hills in a while. Grabbed lunch at the classic deli Nate 'n Al's. Just the hustle and bustle and menus you'd expect from a high energy deli. There is a counter to buy takeaway deli items as well as the restaurant. We had the Lima bean soup (lacked in flavor, but was rich and thick), whitefish sandwich (it would have been nice to have more tomato/onion/lettuce), and steak fries. The sandwiches are really large, so splitting could be a good idea, especially if getting sides. Servers were prompt and not too rushed, which was a nice surprise for a diner/deli kind of place that this is. It certainly fit the bill for what we wanted. read more

Although I am not local to LA, I have been a fan of Nate'n Al's for the many years I have visited, and a meal here is usually a must. Two things before we get to the food: First, if you have never been, you should go. Nate'n Al's is a Beverly Hills landmark. If you have never been to a proper deli in NYC, this is a good enough representation of one without having to fly all the way east. Second, there were rumblings earlier this year (2018) that the brothers (Al's grandsons, I think) who own the place were planning to shutter the deli and sell the property. I can understand the appeal of that idea given their location within the Golden Triangle of Beverly Hills. They are still open as of 06/19/18. Anyway, back to the food. I am a huge fan of smoked/cured deli fish in general and had wanted to try their smoked Nova Scotia salmon and their smoked sturgeon. The only mixed fish platter they have consists of lox (or Nova Scotia salmon), cod and whitefish. It is good, I have had it before, but I wanted sturgeon. So for the first (and last) time, I tried to get fancy and order a fish appetizer with a side of extra fish. One would think that with a menu as extensive as Nate'n Al's, one would be given some flexibility on ordering a la carte. No such luck. Our server suggested I try the aforementioned fish platter because an a la carte order of one of the fish I wanted would cost something like $5. A slice. Plan B then... I canceled my grand deli fish plans and reverted back to what I usually order when I come here, which is a pastrami reuben with fries. This sat better with our server and our orders were quickly placed and delivered, preceded by the obligatory glasses of water and plate of pickles. Juicy pastrami, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, sauerkraut and rye bread are a magical combination. Nosh on a pickle in between bites, savor the melding of fat, acidity and salt (highlighted by the herbal kick from the rye) in your mouth, close your eyes for dramatic effect, and the world will fade away entirely. The only downside to this meal? I stood in front of the cashier counter for a good minute and a half staring at the cashier who was in the midst of what appeared to be a very serious conversation with her two colleagues in hushed tones. I unfortunately don't speak Spanish, but after it appeared they had concluded their business, I said "hi!", was met with a blank stare, handed over my credit card and check (you pay at the counter here) and was handed back a receipt to sign. Thankfully there is a box of pens sat next to the cash register because I forgot to bring one. The deli experience here is authentic down to the brusqueness of service whilst trying to pay! Anyway. If you are reading this review contemplating whether or not to eat at Nate'n Al's, go. Order the pastrami reuben. Remind yourself that you are eating at a deli that just happens to be located in the epicenter of glitz and glamor, and you will be a happy camper. Oh, and don't go on weekends. I stopped in over the weekend to pickup matzo ball soup and was so disappointed. They used to have the best matzoh ball soup around but this soup was literally like water. The broth had no flavor whatsoever and the quart was filled with mostly noodles which were way overcooked. I have been coming here for many years so I was shocked at what I received. Then as we went to pay there was nothing but attitude from the wait staff. No one seemed to care they basically abandoned a table of customers and all we got was attitude. Come here once in a while, almost always get the chilli for its taste and good lean protein content. Today the chilli looked different, had a different consistency, feel and taste. I mentioned it briefly to the waiter, he didn't know anything. I always finish the bowl, but today I had to force myself to eat half and couldn't do more. Mind you, the bowl came cold and I had to ask to warm it up; this took at least 10-15 min bc the waiter forgot about it. Looked to me like they substituted a cheaper fattier ground beef for the original recipe, and possibly cut other corners. It makes sense, bc I found out at the end that they also at the same time raised the prices of some items, but the chilli -- they doubled it. Who doubles the price of a dish overnight? It's not just about the price, it's about not treating you customers right. When I raised these issues to the mgr, all she had to say continuously is, "I'm sorry", but did nothing. When the "changes" include fattier unhealthier lower quality, count us out. read more

Nothing wrong with the service. It was just fine - even beyond fine. It is the food that fell short. I had a potato knish... which was basically a large lump of mashed potato encased in a very thin (almost raw) pastry dough. Now, the only other knish I've had is from Zabar's NYC, and I would consider that place a credible source for Jewish delicatessen. This knish was terrible. I had to send it back and I never do that. The server was incredibly kind and offered to bring me something else so I tried the latkes. These were like giant over-fried McDonald's hash browns. But don't get it twisted... McDonald's hashbrowns are actually good... these latkes we're not. Overly fried, no flavor, disappointing. Sadly, this experience will keep me from coming back. I have gone there for 20 years and I can't tell you how disappointed I am in this food and the service and the attitude! The soup tastes like water and the quality Had gone down 1000% Just because you're the only deli in Beverly Hills doesn't mean you can charge the prices you do and feed people the crap food that you're giving them and be so rude when people try to tell you there is an issue. Their soup which was their title dish for so many years was the worst we had ever tasted and for the price that they're charging this was absurd. The chicken liver tasted old and generic and their lox quality was easily comparable to packaged lox you would find at Ralphs. The manager Joe knows nothing of customer relations and doesn't even speak good English. He's rude and unintelligent. I decided to try the restaurant because it looked nice from the outside. As I walked in, I couldn't tell who to wait for a seat from, the lady on my left or to my immediate right. They were just too engaged in their own conversation and really didn't seem to care. I had to catch their attention. As I was seated, the woman brought me to my table never said a word. She went back straight away to looking at the TV and taking with the cashier. It really was a weird and unfriendly greeting. My sever finally came and he was really nice. He immediately brought me water and asked what I wanted. Very impressive, my food came out in less than 10 minutes. I ordered sausage, eggs and toast. The food tasted good. Overall, the place was spacious and had a good number of patrons. The food service was excellent. I didn't appreciate the hostess or front cashier as they had no smiles and didn't look happy at all. I wanted to use N&A to cater my husbands 30th birthday. Big mistake. I called to make the order on Monday for a Friday pickup since the website says that a weeks notice is advised. On Friday, an hour before the pickup, I called to confirm the order and they had completely lost it. They blamed me and said I never called and they didn't know who placed the order. NEVER ORDEER FROM THESE GUYS. Their customer service is terrible. UPDATE - they found the order and "made it up to me" by getting it done and giving me a discount. When I got the order of 5 half gallons of matzo ball soup, there were no balls in the water. Their challah is not real challah, it's a loaf of egg bread. Shit place. read more

I came here after browsing all the streets in Beverly Hills with my friend who came from out of States on Christmas weekend. It was cold out there and we were hungry. It was very old restaurant established around 70years before, feels like old schools. Decorating, atmosphere old amidst the latest fashions and jewelry dazzling and enticing the people all over the world. But this one is really nicely old restaurant. The staffs were in their old ages served with their hearts and the portions were as huge as we could share in two and get leftovers. The OJ was freshly squeezed and the beer crispy the sandwich freshly made.
