After a long interval I returned to Nate N Al's today looking forward one of their signature sandwiches that I have enjoyed numerous times over many years, The Hollywood, which is corned beef with cole slaw on rye. I'm very sorry to say that this was the WORST corned beef sandwich, not just the Hollywood, that I have ever had. The meat was very dry, chewy and flavorless. Not even the cole slaw on the bread could be of any help. At $19.95 one would expect something special. Sadly this sandwich was virtually inedible and most was left on the plate. While the price of a sandwich may be higher than normal, you certainly get your money's worth. Very large serving of meat as you can tell. Super good sandwich- I love sandwiches so this is telling. I may be spoiled by NY, but this place is pretty decent for LA--honestly, this is the first deli I've been to since NY and I may not have much to base it on locally buuuuuut I got: Whitefish spread: I really enjoy this! It's mellow and not super smoky/in your face, but it's pleasant to eat with crackers and not too oily. Liver spread: Ultra mellow--it almost tastes bland, like there's way too many unsalted egg yolks in there. I'll still eat it, but it's really just mediocre at best. It's also not creamy as much as almost...flaky? Lox spread: The lox flavor is okay (again, not in your face smoky like what I'm used to) and there's definitely way less lox than what I'm accustomed to as well. It's definitely saltier than the other two spreads and the cream cheese flavor is very dominant. It's an all right spread. Cole slaw: Now I do like the cole slaw quite a bit. Not too sweet, not too savory with just the right amount of sauce. The shredded cabbage is nice and crispy and they really pack in that pint! Totally worth the $6! Overall, this place pales in comparison to NY, but I can't keep comparing it to somewhere across the nation, can I? I really wanted corned beef and my hubby wanted smoked pastrami, so I got the Reuben sandwich w corned beef and my hubby got the pastrami sandwich. Both of our sandwiches came with a ton of meat! I was with my parents who can't walk a lot so we stopped searching and turned to sit at the nearest place and this was it. I love a good deli so I'm always into it, but this did not disappoint! Father's Day, Sunday, five of us went here for lunch, after viewing the car show. We knew it would be busy and there would be a long wait. To start the food was excellent. Got the Brentwood on double baked rye and macaroni salad for takeout with a passion fruit iced tea. The rye bread was delicious had a great flavor and crust to it. The brisket and coleslaw were both excellent. Great portion size of meat and taste all around. The macaroni salad was simple but delicious. I would recommend 5/5 with the passionfruit iced tea. After going around old haunts through Los Angeles Nate and Al's came highly recommended. Since I wanted to go old school with my appetite I ordered the Reuben with latkes. Since it was a takeout I ordered outdoors and they take safe precautions. The cashier who took my order was very polite and got my order in very quick. The Reuben was very delicious and fixed my craving for deli sandwiches. The rye was crispy and the pastrami were plentiful. The Russian dressing inside was fantastic, definitely the real deal. The latkes were crispy as expected, they came with Apple sauce and sour cream. Both condiments complimenting the latkes. Parking around here can sometimes be problematic so it's best to go to the parking structure a little way down. My experience was a good one and the food was absolutely amazing. I recommend coming here, I hope to return next time to try the blintzes. read more

I've been going here for many years, always ordering the exact same thing: their signature "Nate 'n Al's Sandwich." I get pastrami on rye, with lettuce, tomato and Russian dressing, yum. But last Friday, March 1st I ordered the same thing as always, but it was awful! The pastrami, which had always been luscious and delicious, was terribly dry and tasteless. I hope this was just a fluke, maybe a bad shipment of pastrami, and not reflective of cost cutting or a change in the supplier by the new owners, the Azoffs. I know my delis! Greenblatt's, Canter's, Lenny's, Brent's, Sherman's, Jerry's, if he's got a deli, I've probably been to it. Nate'n Al's is my favorite by a lonnnnng shot! You wouldn't expect the best deli in Southern California to be housed in the heart of Beverly Hills, but alas, here it is. A couple times a year, I get this immense craving for a Reuben sandwich. You wouldn't describe a Reuben to be "melt in your mouth," but at Nate'n Al's, it is. The rye bread is soft, moist perfection. I throw the other half of the sandwich in the oven at 325 the next day, and that pastrami is melty-good. Matzo ball soup is, of course, amazing, but only good for when you dine in. The matzo balls are so dense, that if you get to go, you get one giant ball, and very little broth. That chicken broth is a miracle cold cure, by the way. I don't like to call my order ahead of time when I'm sick though because if I can't find easy parking, I just keep driving. If I'm not sick, I will battle the hunt for parking in order to dine in. There's always great people watching and conversation eavesdropping to be had here! You'll find yourself in the middle of your very own Billy Crystal skit. I grew up eating Nate'n Al (NNA). It's just an all American, no bs kind of a place in the heart of BH. NNA is my go to place when I don't want to think and yet it is always there. I love to dine in but I love even more to take out (Don't care for parking). Breakfast is served all day with the exception of any eggs benedict. What I really want to try but have not is the breakfast burrito (these are normally huge and I can't finish them). From sandwiches, hot dogs to burgers, soups/salads to entrees and any sides and appetizers; you just have to try everything at least once. Everything comes in a ginormous portion, and a doggie bags is always a must. Oh, and FREE pickles as soon as you sit down! NNA is like my dad. It's always there when I need him. The food is always consistently great. The portions are BIG and the prices are excellent. 2 hours free parking is everywhere or street meter parking should you choose to. This is my go to. Menu has all the standard deli fare, and like most, breakfast is served all day. I judge a deli on 5 things: chicken noodle soup, salami & eggs, corned beef sandwich, pastrami sandwich, and brisket dip. For this review, I did 40%. The Order ======== 1. Chicken Noodle Soup ($6.95 bowl) -- half the portion of other delis, but also, half the price. Something delicious was missing from it, and don't say a matzoh ball. Thin noodles, too, and this reviewer likes them thick instead. (3.5 stars) 2. Brisket Dip ($16.95) -- presented like a sunny Sunday morning, this was beautiful. I had been craving a nice beef sammie for 2 days after seeing said episode. I finally got a chance to satisfy that last night. The boy, kiddo and I went for dinner and were pretty full after. I had the corned beef sandwich with a side of potato salad. He had the egg salad sandwich with a side of macaroni. Kiddo had a corn dog, fruit and chocolate milk. Overall, I liked my sammie. It was packed with corned beef, which was tender, and flavorful. Not a bad deal at all. The potato salad was a bit sweet for my liking and drowning in mayo. BF liked his egg salad sandwich, but then again he likes egg sandwiches in general. I had a bite and it was pretty good, packed with egg salad with a strip of lettuce. The people I love, LOVE it and it makes me happy to see them happy. I work in the music business. Translation: My best Friend is my lawyer. I eat more meals with my attorney than I eat with any one else in the world. Since Nate and Al's = one million stars to him, I will tell you about this deli from both of our perspectives. He: likes to order the Nova and cream cheese on a bagel. It even makes this distinguished Yale law school graduate say pedestrian words like "Nummy!" He: actually smiles while eating any one of Nate's sandwiches. This is no small feat! Particularly loved by him: the Westwood sandwich. (roast turkey, coleslaw and Russian dressing on rye) The sandwich is enormous. Absurdly big! Piled high with dry, carved, roasted turkey. Not that generic, processed turkey found in Subway's five dollar foot-long and the like! Ala cart, the sandwich is $14.50. (Soon we'll delve into why I do not love this place;-) If you are in the mood for breakfast while watching your cholesterol, order the comparatively inexpensive two egg breakfast for $6.50. (1.00 extra for egg whites) Nate 'n Al's will deliver a much-more-massive-than-most portion of egg whites. Like five egg whites massive! -Served with your choice of tomato, potatoes or low-fat cottage cheese and toast, bagel, roll, English muffin or bialy. Who does not go to a Jewish deli for the bagels? If I were you, I'd go bagel:-) I go tomato:-( The menu has old timey blue-plate specials like liver and onions, roast chicken and meatloaf as well as Jewish classics like chicken livers, stuffed kishka plates etc. All entrees are served with a side of coleslaw. Prices average $15. (I will get to it!) I love the new dill pickles that are dropped off at the table gratis. BUT! When a turkey dog that comes with a side of baked beans, coleslaw or potato salad is $12.25 USD?!!!! My chair scoots back away from the menu in disbelief. When every little thing tacks on to the bill, it can really add up! Soda? $2.50, French fries? $4.50. Swiss, American cheese or tomato 85¢ Extra. A Turkey sandwich with Swiss, tomato and avocado, a side of French fries and a coke? $24.05!!!!!!!!! And there, friends, is my beef with this cool joint. Gluten-free friends, there ain't much here for you. Kosher soup starters are notoriously wheat-based. Watch out for brands like Telma etc. Sandwiches, bagels, hot dogs, matzo, kishka? It's all off-limits:-( I may never be in the mood to go to Nate's but I will be back time and time again. For the person that handles my affairs and has my back like no other. For you. Why? The location sucks in parking wise, good luck finding a street parking or park in the public parking structure one block away) it is in the middle of all the high end luxury brand stores oddly, (My hubby found a street parking in front of Hermes and Chanel, totally torturing me. why hubby, why!!!) This was the probably the best item I had here. Pickles, they give you fresh ones and aged once, both were not too salty, carried good textures, and flavored ok.
