    Pork Intestines!
    Crystal H.

Not bad for to-go items. The pork intestines were too fatty for our liking though. The frozen pork buns aren't as good as other places. We also tried other cooked items like beancurd, pork skin in jelly, pork belly, and garlic pickled seaweed. These were good.

*****Customer Experience During the COVID-19 Pandemic***** Situated next to the Milpitas Lion Supermarket, New China Foods offers a wide array of freshly made soy products, smoked and braised meats, and cook to order food. They used to have a sit-down restaurant in San Ramon a decade or so ago and it was my family's go-to takeout spot. These days, they are left with this one and another location in Union City. I came here on 08/22/2020 to get some takeout after running a few errands in the area. I walked in at around 4:30 pm and the staff was already busy fielding takeout orders. Some COVID-19 safety measures were implemented (social distancing, plexiglass shields etc). For the most part, customers did their best to respect every other's space. Staff members wore gloves and masks, but I did observe a couple of them wore them improperly. After a quick perusing of their menu, I ordered the following: - #69 Sautéed Fish Fillet - #54 Green Onion Beef - #31 Sautéed Pork with Bamboo Shoots - A small container of spicy pig's ear The total was a little over $35 and I was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. I decided to go pick up some Chinese BBQ a few shops down. By the time I returned, my order was ready. The sautéed fish fillet dish was okay. Pieces of white fish fillet were stir fried with bamboos shoots, carrots, celeries, and straw mushrooms. The fish was soft in texture and mild in taste. The assorted vegetables gave the dish a bit of crunch. Green onion beef was made with both green and white onions and thinly sliced beef that was marinated prior. The beef was tender and delicious. The taste of the onions was really evident. The pork with bamboo shoots dish was good. It was seasoned well. I love bamboo shoots so this was perfect for me. If you like pig's ear, you have to try their version. They cut the ears into thick strips and marinated them with spicy chili oil and carrots (they used to put sliced garlic too). The textural contrast was funky in a good way and the spiciness wasn't overwhelming. If you're not a Mandarin speaker, I'd suggest you get a to-go menu and figure out what you want before entering. That way, it will minimize your time being inside. The food here is not gourmet, but is what I call functional - quick, cheap, delicious, and lots of it. 4 solid stars. BONUS MATERIAL: - Major credit cards accepted. - Ample parking on site.

This is the neighborhood hole in the wall cheap eats. I used to come here when I lived a block away. It was always between this place and the porridge place for my $8-10 lunch Chinese bento Surprise the prices really have not changed compare to others. I stopped by this place after picking up my curbside cold food. Now, u guys understand why I stated the negatives of curbside with respect to Chinese dishes. Same price more food and hot... How can you compare. So I only buy non Asian stuff from curbside. Back to this place. They got the cheapest smoked chicken and bento. It's cook to order. Mongolian beef with 2 sides or the smoked chicken and tons of other Chinese bento combination. If I want more variety then it's the porridge place. If I want chicken I come here Today got me some cold noodles as it was 100F and the smoked giant drumsticks looks so delicious I got a couple of those chopped End up with 2 orders of cold noodles $9ea and 2 drumsticks $4ea. Total damage with tax was 28.30. Damn couldn't even finish one order of the cold noodles in one sitting. It's going to be lunch and dinner for one order... Talk about cost per servings savings They also got smoked half duck for $13. Pork feet, liver, etc. All the Chinese stewed classics... Really have to come back....

Yeah it looks pedestrian and prolly not too spic and span for some people but I hella love going here! I love the fact that they have lunch meals that is less than $10 (it's actually $9.25 including tax) and the food is fresh. If the food you want is not on the display case then you can order ala cart and they will make it for you (which is the case of us ordering Mapo tofu which is SOOO DANG GOOD!) I love their bamboo shoots (comparable to Porridge Place) and their other vegetarian options. They also have meat options which are also flavorful and plenty for the order. Did I ever tell you that their lunch meal comprise of 3 items plus rice and soup? Heck yeah! And who can beat their milk tea with pearls for $2. It's not artisan but its flavorful (I think they got their tea from Ten Ren so it's legit). I advise you to try the food and be prepared to enjoy it.

Bento box - 3 Items rice and a small soup of the day included - $10.95, $12.02 after Milpitas tax

I have known this place for years because I shop at Lion Supermarket next door from time to time but never really went inside to check it out. Since a new Planet Fitness gym opened in McCarthy Ranch, I have stopped in here to get lunch after the gym. The bento box is a great option when you're in a hurry because there are prepared items ready on a buffet style steam table. Although the hot items aren't very hot after an hour or two of being made. The residual heat from the steam rice keeps them slightly warm. If you bring it home you can reheat it but I eat it as is. I'd reheat the soup though. During opening and lunch hour is when the soup will be hot because they put it in the to-go container in advance to speed things up. They have a balance of cold and hot items, vegetarian and non-veg to choose from. Some days the trays have hot food in them, some days it's empty from the lunch hour (I come around 2pm) but I'm able to pick other items available. Pictures I have included show the food items I'll get if available. There are many dishes to order from the kitchen if you don't like what you see on the steam table. I'll do that if I'm feeding my family but the bento box is perfect for myself.

This place is really authentic lady was nice food was great it came with a soup on the side, only cash was not super convenient for me but still managed with an ATM next door.

    Side dish u pick 4

When craving for some light flavor vegetarian dish, always come here to buy a box of it. You can pick up to 4 different side dish. I feel healthy lol

The phrase, don't judge a book by its cover, comes to mind when you are visiting New China Foods, located next to the Lion Supermarket, and surrounded by a bunch of other restaurants in this particular shopping center in all directions. From the outside, it gives off a feel that the place may not even actually be open, and you're sort of left wondering whether or not to go in as the structure inside is all very dated, and doesn't look like anybody has actually renovated it for many years. Just walking by it usually, it would not be a place that you will just look at and say, "I want to eat here!" But don't be fooled, as there's a lot to offer here, albeit, ambience is not one of them. When allowed to eat inside, the place does not actually have much seating, as it's mainly just a takeout place, and they would have normally had just a few tables on the front side of the place, but seat very few people to sit down even if it weren't allowed, so don't drop by here thinking it will be good for that even when it's allowed again. Their current method of operation is that they are only allowed to let 1 person in a time to look at the food for takeout, so if you go during peak times, you may have to deal with a bit of a wait since it can pile up fast. The customer service here is sort of hit or miss, so unfortunately don't expect much. It used to be better back when their regular employees worked more often, but now it may be more of just seems like relatives are helping out, as they're less than enthusiastic, but at least they get the job done so can't complain. It is very much a mom n pop type of local shop, which could also explain the decor in general. Price wise, this place is my jam, as they're definitely the most affordable place to eat as far as portion to price in this shopping center, and probably the immediate area as well to be honest. When you pick what you want for your food, whether it's a smaller box, or a bigger box, they do not skimp you even a little on the portions. The best part about that is that it's all one price, so really, fill it up I say! The food here is pretty good, and offers basically a bit of everything. The food is already pre-made, so when you get there you just get to pick what you want to snack on. I've tried several of their dishes, while none was fantastic, the food quality and flavoring of all of the dishes was definitely good, especially when considering the price. Veggie dishes, fish dishes, meat dishes, and others. The one thing that this place offers too is that they have a lot of Chinese specific meats and dishes that most places don't really have, or that if they have them they don't do them well. Some of my favorite things at this shop are not even the entree dishes, but things like the bamboo, and the bean curd noodle. However, I do highly, highly recommend the bamboo here, as not only is it such a great value for how much you get, but honestly, the bamboo is probably one of the best ones I've had in the Bay Area as it's just so tender and nice, and goes great with almost everything. My personal recommendation, eat it with braised pork rice. All in all, New China Food, while not the most extravagant place around, is probably one of the more overlooked places by the typical customer, as you really can't tell what they have to offer until you go inside to look at the food, and also try it for yourself. Price will probably be one of the bigger draws too for this place, as again, they are quite generous with their portions, and don't charge extra for doing so. Since it's all takeout now anyways, keep this option in mind for sure for your future meal planning with them in mind.

    Tofu with brown sauce
    Ee Vonn Y.

Ordered more items from their takeout menu: Tofu with brown sauce - Silky, smooth, savory, and comforting. Basil with eggplant - I love dishes with lots of basil! Saucy, warm, and soggy. Gluten roll with baby cabbage - Rolls had a bouncy, rubbery texture. Cabbage is warm, soggy, and plain but I liked it. Sweet and sour fish - Juicy, nice crunch, and saucy. Must order. Garlic with spinach - Very light, stringy, with more stems than leaves. A little more broth and wet than I imagined. Not much flavor but I was expecting that and I liked it. Tofu with green beans and carrots - Silky tofu with a handful of edamame-like beans, small bits of carrot. It's a wet, soupy dish vs. a dry dish. No flavor, pass. Fish filet with garlic sauce - Chunks of fish marinated in warm, comforting savory flavors. Good!

Chinese dishes here are good. You can order individual dishes or get bento boxes. They also have fridges in the back of the stores where you can buy soy milk, tofu, buns, peanuts, and many more. The store itself isn't very clean but you can't expect from a Chinese place Iike this.

    Fried pork chop

Bought a pork chop bento box and I can't believe they gave dry old and burnt uneatable meat to customer. Will never get this again!

The Chinese sausage pieces sprinkled throughout added extra flavor too. The bowl is deep so there seemed to be roughly 5 cups of rice. Unfortunately the laksa shrimp fried rice was disappointing in comparison. It didn't have much flavor overall - better than plain rice but definitely needed more seasoning. The menu lists homemade laksa sauce as an ingredient but we didn't taste that, and the dish wasn't spicy at all either despite the 1 chili pepper rating. But it looked just like the menu picture so maybe the description is wrong. Fried chicken with tom yum sauce came with 6 pieces. Very juicy. We also enjoyed the herbal roasted prime steak with sausage rice. The delicious rice had the taste of fish sauce. Most of the short rib slices were soft and a few were slightly chewy but overall decent quality. Some of the fattier pieces of meat were still attached to the bone.

I came here on a Friday evening with my friend to grab dinner around 6:00 PM. The wait was around an hour, so be very prepared if you're coming during the dinner rush. This spot is located where the majority of the Asian restaurants are in Milpitas, so it's safe to say the parking can get a bit hectic and intense. The interior of the place is very bright, modern, and clean. There is a lot of seating for a small space, but the reason they are so busy has a lot to do with the number of people wanting to check this spot out. When you sit down, you scan their virtual menu via QR code and order there instead of through a server. You have the choice to order on one phone as a group or separately. Between my friend and me, we ordered a beef mint salad, fried tofu, confit mushrooms, and truffle mushroom rice. I will say that when we first got the fried tofu and confit mushrooms, we were quite surprised by the small portions compared to the price. That said, they were delicious, but skippable if you're trying to find the best bang for your buck. What I absolutely would recommend is their truffle mushroom fried rice. This might have been my best bite this month. It was so savory, the mushrooms hit perfectly, and the coating of butter on the rice was supreme. It was $28 for a bowl, but it was a good value to split between two people. Overall, this place had great, fast service (our food came out in under 10 minutes), a nice ambiance, and fresh, flavorful food.

It is in the same plaza as the popular porridge place and New China Tofu (where they used to sell Stinky tofu - but that is for a different story). The place is roomy and clean, the service was decent, friendly enough but we had to ask for sharing bowls and spoons. The order is the usual QR code so you order online, but pay offline. They have plenty of selection, but since it was just the 2 of us, and based on the name, noodles should be must orders. We had a soupy version (hot and sour fish) and a dry version (spicy ground pork), with a side order of cold appetizer (shredded tofu skin salad). The cold appetizer was a bit salty, but the overall flavor was pretty good. We added more chili oil that is available on the table. There was a wait between the appetizer and the next dish, we finished the appetizer before the first noodle arrived. Hot & Hour Fish - we selected the hand-cut noodles. The noodles were thick with just the right amount of chewiness. The broth was amazing with just enough kick, not too spicy. The fish was tender and the tofu was wonderful. The only "veggie" was the pickled/perserved mustard greens. We really enjoyed this one. Dry/Stir spicy noodles with ground pork - we selected the thick flat noodles for this. The presentation was beautiful and we could smell the chili powder and it was wonderful. A bit oily, which i understand as we need the oil to get the sauce mixed and noodles do not all stick together. The kick for this dish is actually less than the fish noodles, and not too salty, which was great after the salty appetizer and the strong flavor of the fish noodles. We did not finish and had to bring them back home. And we know we will be back!

So I tried to talk to him to see if there's any other options, like Zelle or Venmo, or maybe I can go to a nearby ATM and get some cash. He ignored me and did not respond, and left. I walked around, was finally able to get a waitress who was willing to talk to me. I explained that I didn't know they only took cash and I wonder if I can pay through other ways. She pointed at the wall and told me "it says on the wall", sounding like blaming me for not getting cash ready. Yes, maybe I should have read all the signs on the wall, but I really don't enjoy being blamed when I did nothing wrong. Assuming credit cards as one of the payment methods is not my fault, just how the society works. Anyway, I was able to pay them via Venmo, but I did not enjoy the experience at all.
