    Ham and cheese scramble
    Jadyn M.

This is a counter service restaurant and bakery. I ordered the ham and cheese scramble with potatoes and toast. I did not like that there was just a bunch of cheese melted on top of my eggs and ham, as opposed to being incorporated throughout. My potatoes were not warm when they came out, nor was my toast, so they must have been sitting a while. And I found a hair in my food when I was almost done eating. My spouse said that their biscuits and gravy were gross, with undercooked mushrooms. I don't think I'll be back sadly unless it's to get a pastry.

The food is a bit bland- what we'd call "plain food" at the summer camp I used to work at. That means I need the hot sauce I carry in the glove compartment or just ask for it, along with the salt and pepper. This however, is a godsend for those afflicted with special dietary needs- my person cannot currently handle any oil or spice so this is perfect for them. So , tbh, food might be 3 stars. However- it's loaded w/ vegetarian options and they make their own bread. Also, the ambiance, service and PRICE of this place are worth that extra star- you havn't seen prices like this since 2000. And the open airy, natural wood and plant vibe is straight out of the 1970's. Ditto the open air, come hang out and chill, welcome to the big courtyard. And the super nice friendly staff. Well worth a visit.

    Tasty tuna sandwich.

I can't believe I've never tried this spot before considering how long it's been around! But I stopped in for lunch and I'm glad I did. I'll definitely add it to my rotation for breakfast/lunch. They have a pretty big menu and serve everything all day, which I appreciate. It is also reasonably priced. I got a tuna salad sandwich on toasted wheat bread. It came topped with lettuce and tomato. It was a very classic, solid sandwich and the bread was really good. (I kind of wish it had come with a side.) I also got a mini pecan pie which was so-so. The vibes are very hippie/classic...it just feels so Eugene to me. There is a ton of seating, both inside and outside. It was a nice day so I sat outside and it was a great atmosphere--the outdoor seating area is enclosed behind a fence with lots of nice landscaping so it feels very private and quiet. I enjoyed my relaxed lunch in the sun.

The cutest bakery ever! We stayed in Eugene for a week looking for a rental in the area, and New Day Bakery was only a short walk away from us. We walked over and picked out a few treats (I ordered the mushroom cream cheese pastry, and my partner ordered a bear claw, we split a strawberry cheesecake slice, and ordered an iced chai) and enjoyed them on the outdoor patio with our dog! It was a beautiful start to our day, and Kit was such a kind person who helped us. I would love to come back and visit this bakery again! We also brought back a loaf of their sourdough bread and have all but eaten every slice in the form of sandwiches and toast. I can't wait to come back!

Some of the other reviews were negative on their food...but our food was fantastic. The burgers were moist and not greasy. The waffle cut fries were hot and crispy. The bartenders work non stop to get your drinks and food out quickly. My daughter loved the churro style donuts (but they are messy). The decor is a D&D dive bar scene....so many things to look at as you wait for bingo to start. They just changed the rules and you do have to pay $1.00 per person to play bingo...but where else can you get that type of entertainment for a dollar. We can't wait to return.

At one point, the bartender disappeared for approximately fifteen minutes, leaving several patrons waiting without acknowledgment. When she finally returned, she casually mentioned she had been on a personal phone call. A second woman then stepped behind the bar, immediately clarifying that she was not, in fact, a bartender. When I expressed concern about the extended absence and lack of service--something I would consider standard feedback in any hospitality setting--I was abruptly told I was "speaking badly" about the staff and was asked to leave. This kind of defensiveness and disregard for patrons is deeply unprofessional, especially for an establishment that positions itself within a community where communication, accountability, and mutual respect are paramount. Eugene has a growing nightlife and alternative culture scene, and many people--locals and visitors alike--expect spaces that uphold those values. Based on my experiences, I cannot recommend The Serpent & the Sparrow. There are other venues in town that offer a far more welcoming environment, competent service, and a genuine respect for their patrons.

All of the staff are amazing and I've never had a bad experience with customer service. Many staff are high school students. My son worked there and absolutely loved working for Addi. I have yet to have a dish that didn't taste good. Fresh and made to order. Very flavorful food. The pancake is huge as well as the cinnamon roll. 4 people could eat it and each would have a belly full. The vibe is cute inside and very cozy. I love to sit and look at the decor. Addi herself waited on us and was super personable and sweet. I heard her across the cafe ask after a customer's new baby -- he hadn't been in for a year, she just remembered. A homeless guy came in and she listened to his rambling story attentively, then got him some food and sent him on his way. She's a gem. The food was pretty typical greasy spoon breakfast, which is exactly what I wanted. Solid meal and much appreciated at that hour. I think I heard then say they opened at 4am. On our first morning in our new town, we went to The Original Pancake House for breakfast. It was a simple meal, but one we were grateful we could afford. When we asked for the check, our server smiled and told us someone had already paid for it. That small act of kindness made me feel like I truly belonged in our new home. It reminded me that even in an unfamiliar place, there were good people who cared about others. Since that day, every time we visit The Original Pancake House, we make it a point to pay it forward whenever we can. It's our way of honoring the kindness that meant so much to us and has stuck with me. Beyond the beautiful memory, the food is incredible. It's hands down the best breakfast I've ever had. Comfort food that tastes like it's made with love. You must try the Dutch baby! The ladies who work there are always so warm and welcoming, making every visit feel like coming home. The Original Pancake House in Eugene is a charming, family-friendly spot with genuine warmth and stellar coffee. The casual, lively vibe makes it feel like the proper brunch destination you'd hope for from a legendary breakfast joint. We ordered their hero dish--a side of buttermilk pancakes--and the Irish Omelette. The pancakes delivered real flavor: fluffy, tender, with classic buttermilk tang. My only critique? They arrived cool, likely from sitting in the warmth window a bit too long. Off the griddle, these would shine. The Irish Omelette was more disappointing. Designed to be airy and light with corned beef and potatoes inside, ours was overcooked and rubbery--far from the delightful, pillowy texture it should be. For a restaurant with this history, execution should be consistent. The coffee and service were warm and attentive, which goes a long way. 3/5 stars. Worth visiting for atmosphere, especially if your pancakes arrive hot. Try during slower service to avoid the window-sit fate. The Portland location executes at a higher level.
