The food here is pretty good. The service is fast but sometimes it's hard to find someone who'll refill my coffee. I ordered breakfast from here to take out and they already had it ready and everything by the time I got there. The food is good, but I am compelled to post a warning. If you have food allergies, you may have to think twice about visiting, especially if you're ordering takeout. Specifically, cautiously, kindly and repeatedly requesting for a certain item that you are very allergic to not to be included - does not suffice, because somehow it will still be in your food order. Also, this place is the only dining establishment that punishes you for not taking up more of their time, because when you order takeout the portions are MUCH smaller than they are when you dine in house. The issue is they still charge you the same - although the portions differ. Approach at your own risk. I'm surprised that the current rating is 3.5 stars. My husband and I stop here for either breakfast or lunch before or after my prenatal appointment. We've been here about three times and we're always pleasantly surprised by how delicious different dishes are because we order different menu every time. We had their deluxe cheeseburger & French fries set, banana nut pancake, waffle & ham, western omelet, whole wheat toast, etc. We've been to many diners and this place's crispiness of French fries is one of the best. Their coffee is decent and the service is amazing. Today, we asked our server to prepare our food faster so that we can make it to my prenatal appointment on time and the whole staff made it happen! This place just became our new favorite diner. Beautiful huge diner, classic american chrome, with bar, booths and tables. Love the look of this place. Went with my husband and 15 month old baby. Very friendly staff, was given a high chair straightaway that was clean and easy to use. Being early in the morning we ordered breakfast, was very happy to see an option for wholewheat pancakes on the menu, don't think I've ever seen those available before at a diner. I love them, prefer over regular pancakes. We ordered ham and scrambled eggs, home fries and toast. bacon, scrambled eggs home fries and toast . blueberry wholewheat pancakes. DELICIOUS. Really, really good. I always think you can tell if a diner is good by their homefries and these were great. I'll also definitely go back for the wholewheat pancakes. Coffee and a juice is also included with the breakfast. Juice isn't fresh squeezed but I don't mind about that to be honest. Only reason I deducted one star was because they don't have real maple syrup (it comes as breakfast syrup in tear-open packets) and the coffee was kinda bad. My boyfriend and I went last night around 9pm and both ordered burgers, him the regular and me the veggie. I should mention that unless you pay for the "deluxe," which is 4 extra dollars, you get literally a patty on a bun. It's extra if you want lettuce, tomato, and/or fries. Anyway, our food came out and the buns looked sad right off the bat. My boyfriend liked his food, but about halfway through mine, I noticed some mold on the bottom bun of my burger. I pointed it out to our server, who took a look and tried to insist that it was just the lettuce or patty poking through, which it clearly was not. When I insisted it was the bun, he looked at me and, with attitude, exclaimed, "So what do you want me to do? Make another one?" I was kind of shocked by that reaction, but my boyfriend said yes on my behalf, so the server grabbed plate and forcefully dumped it in the trash in front of us. The second burger was good and the bun looked much fresher. However, about 9:37pm, the server dumped the check on our table, and we had been planning on dessert. When we told him that, he replied, "dude, we close in like ten minutes," then walked away and proceeded to seat new customers. They were set to close at 10pm per their website. Clearly, it was personal, which is perplexing considering I tried to be very polite about the mold and didn't want to put any blame on anyone. Another thing, the burgers were supposed to include a pickle and coleslaw, which neither of us got, and the cups of water were tiny and not once refilled. read more

With that being said, I am VERY picky when it comes to diners. I think that although diners have simple, classic food, very few diners ever get it right. The burgers are flavorless and the frech toast soggy. NOT good. BUT this place is so far so good in my book. I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes and my boyfriend got the belguim waffle with ice cream. My pancakes were perfect. They had just the right amount of chocolate chips. Many a pancake I have had has been flavorless and soggy. My boyfriend's waffle was great. Nice a crunchy with ice cream that did not make it soggy one bit. I have been coming to this diner for many years. They recently had renovations done a few years ago and the place looks great! This is your pretty standard diner with pretty standard food. The inside is really nice. The tables are all new and comfortable. Everything is clean and kept well which makes for a good eating environment. The food is also pretty good. Nothing outstanding about it, but nothing to complain about either. I usually order breakfast from here so my review is based off their breakfast items, which are always good. The coffee is ok. I am a big coffee drinker and it's not the best cup I've ever had, but it does the job. The service is also very fast and inviting. You never feel out of place in this diner, they treat everyone the same. It's a nice place to go for something different. If you go, you will not be dissapointed. read more

Took my family for dinner last night to the New Hyde Park Diner. It was our first time there and we were really looking forward to a great meal. It was the charm of the classic, aluminum diner that first caught my attention. We were surprised upon arrival to find the parking lot mostly empty at 7pm on a Saturday night. We frequently go to diners and there's usually a nice crowd by that hour. Keep reading if you want to know why the lack of customers. Anyway, I ordered a classic cheddar cheeseburger deluxe with fried onions, one of my favorite guilty pleasures. My wife ordered an omelet with ham, home fries, and toast. My son ordered a Cubano sandwich, a somewhat strange choice given that we were in a diner but that's what he wanted. It took quite a long time for our food to arrive but that's not a deal breaker if the food is really good. Each table had a jukebox which should have been a real treat and kept us occupied but I couldn't find one classic 50's or Doo Wop song on it. What a shame. When the food finally arrived I was very disappointed to find a half dollar sized portion of fried onions sitting in the center of my burger. Usually, when I order fried onions on a burger, the burger comes smothered in onions. This chintzy portion had me wondering, did they run out of onions? Then my wife commented on the skimpy portion of French fries I'd been served and I realized she was right. What's up with this place? Are they rationing portions like in wartime? I called our waiter over and asked him why the inadequate portion of fried onions and French fries and he said that's all they serve. He then turned and walked away, no apologies, no offer to bring more, no offer to take it back to the kitchen. Now I have dealt with numerous diner waiters and waitresses and I am accustomed to them being very friendly and accommodating but this guy could care less about me or my family. I kept that in mind for later and knew just how to fix his wagon. When we left I asked my wife and son how their food was and both of them said "not that great. The other diner was much better." I'll admit my burger was pretty good but could have been amazing had they smothered it in onions. Needless to say, we will not be going back to the the New Hyde Park Diner and would not recommend it. One more thing, it was definitely overpriced for diner food. As for "the other diner" my wife and son preferred, they were talking about the Omega Diner, just minutes away. It has way better food and better prices. I can highly recommend the Omega Diner but not the New Hyde Park Diner. read more

Our favorite diner in the area. My wife and I have gone there many times, encompassing breakfast, lunch and dinner. We call it "our diner". The diner is always spotlessly clean. And the staff are very friendly, welcoming and accommodating. Over the years we've gotten to know most of the employees, and they go out of their way, such as changing items shown on the menu, a sign that the food is freshly made. My wife loves their broiled fish, which they will prepare any way she wants. I'm partial to the fish cakes (home made on premises). Omelets are delicious, especially with their sweet potato fries. And for dinner we are sure to leave room for desert, decaf coffees and share a huge fresh chocolate chip cookie. (When by myself I go for rice pudding or one of the pies.) The serving sizes are very generous, they pack the leftovers, with enough food for another meal at home. One last point - the diner is handicap accessible (which is very important for me). Outside there is a long ramp. And inside are wheelchair accessible rest rooms. They renovated several years ago, and definitely took ADA compliance very serious. So, if you want to come to "our diner", I'm sure you will find it a satisfying experience. read more

I went here the other day with my boyfriend and had such an awful experience. When we first walked in we were not greeted politely. We were abruptly asked how many, and was told to sit at the table 'around the bend'. We both looked at each other with confusion while the obnoxious cashier/greeter grabs two menus and storms past us and says, 'this way!'. Our order was taken rather quickly, which was great, however, I was never asked if I wanted another cup of coffee. I even put my coffee at the tip of the table in hopes the waiter would realize! Me and my family came here after ice skating because all of the other places were either closed or super busy. We decided to stop here and get food. The place was empty so we were a little skeptical. We ordered a bunch of pancakes, burgers, paninis, and chicken tenders. There were roughly about 7 of us so I don't quite remember what we all got. Regardless, the food was absolutely amazing. An order of buffalo wings, French fries, cheeseburger deluxe, roast beef sandwich, three cokes and a chocolate milk should not add up to $51. Yuck! We came here for breakfast and ordered the basics the corn beef hash looked like dog food and tasted horrible. The best way to describe it was take the insides of a taco and add a bucket of salt and throw some eggs on top. All I tasted was onions and god knows what else was in there. My boyfriend ordered a side of bacon that looked like it was sitting out as a diner sample since the diner originally opened 300 years ago. My friend that I was with described the corn beef hash specifically as follows: "It looks, tastes, and smells as though the cook took a shit on the plate and then the waitress served it to us with a straight face and a smile" Needless to say, we sent it back and told the manager it was spoiled. My French toast, another basic elementary diner breakfast item, was also NOT cooked, literally had parts of it that were regular white bread with nothing on it, and the parts that were "normal" were just mushy soggy bread. Wow. I was thoroughly shocked at how good my food was. Here are the facts: Large parking lot, conveniently located near a bunch of stores. Good sized diner with an extra side section for large parties (like the 20-person one I was with). We swarmed in at 10pm on a Friday night. We were seated in our own section. They came and took our order promptly. We had jugs of water so we never ran low on that. Five mins after placing our order, we got the usual pickle and coleslaw, but the pickle was a full sour (the way it should be) and the coleslaw was really good (and I don't even like coleslaw)! Literally 20 or so minutes after putting in our order, we all had our food. I ordered the lamb gyro sandwich and oh. em. gee. It was the best gyro meat I have ever ordered. I kid you not. Tender, succulent even! It was not overly seasoned/dried out like other places I've been to. Their tzatziki was thicker than normal but was again perfectly seasoned. (I think they must have added sour cream to it, but it was a nice addition to something that is normally a bit too cucumber-watery for my taste.) I tried my friend's fries, and they were perfectly crispy on the outside, fluffy soft potato on the inside. I never have high expectations from diner food, but this place has changed my mind. My wife and I took my mother for breakfast, for her birthday, and the service was great. The food was OK, nothing to write home about. The place was clean and spacious. We had our three daughters and two nieces with us, the staff made accommodations for us, giving us a booth, after first giving us a table. With an eleven year old and four young ones, seven years old and under, we and the staff had our hands full. The busboy and our waitress made us feel at home and made my mother's day, topping it off with a slice of cake for her. I've been to NHPD a few times recently, and have had a somewhat different experience from the other reviewers. My experience has been that there's-nothing-wrong-with-the-food but it didn't really bowl me over. We've had both breakfast and lunch items and thought it was serviceable food that filled us up but a little bland and a little dry and a little more expensive than other nearby diners that we love going to (Omega to the east, and Silver Moon to the west). We would probably only eat here again if we were waiting for a prescription from the Walgreen across the street - or perhaps we'd just take the short drive out to Omega and come back. Service is pretty friendly but it doesn't make up for the eats if you don't like the food. read more
