Man, I just can't get enough Greek food lately. My brother has made a habit of bringing me to some banging spots lately. Although, this place is a bit of a hole in the wall at first glance, Nicks Greek Deli should not be underestimated. Inside the tiny 4 table restaurant is a Greek grandma cooking up some crazy good gyro meats and throwing together some incredible cheap eats. We sat down and ordered and our food came quick. The prices can't be beat. Honestly the best food for the value in all of Reno that I know about. Get the gyro plate or gyro wrap. That lamb/beef gyro meat can't be beat. Holy cow, it's good. This place is a little hole in the wall with great food. There's not much seating. The way it works is that you enter the restaurant. Catch the eye of one of the ladies that in the kitchen immediately to your left as you enter. Then take a seat wherever you find one. One of the ladies will bring a menu over, and it's a simple menu. Which is nice! Not too many choices but everything I had was worth having again. I got the Royal plate which comes with meat, tzatziki, pita, salad and spinach pie. I loved that the tradition gyro meat had a bit of char on it. It makes it so tasty!! The salad was a typical greek salad with lettuce, tomato, cukes and shaved feta cheese. The pita bread was grilled and cut into bite size pieces which was perfect for putting some tzatziki and a piece of meat and putting it in my mouth without getting it all over the place. BTW... the tzatziki was the best that I've had outside of Greece. Very traditional with lots of garlic. My DH got the gyro which he loved, it was huge but a bit messy. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. Can you believe a fantasic gyro for $8... Having frequented Nick's for many years I took a friend here because it is locally owned and there are several Greek restaurants in our area that are owned by chains and I'm all for patronizing locals. Granted, there's nothing fancy about Nick's which comes to be expected. Nick's can be hit and miss as far as service, but this visit that wasn't the problem. My friend and I both ordered the " Royal Plate " it consists of sliced Gyro meat, Greek salad, Spanakopita and Tzatziki sauce along with inconsistent slices of pita bread. The presentation was horrible, instead of the food arranged on a single plate, the incomplete salad and Tzatziki sauce was alone a large plate and the meat , Spanakopita and pita was on a separate small plate. The meat weren't nice long slices, they were chunks that were dry and salty. The Spanakopita was a Soggy mess, the Phyllo dough was unpronounced and the Spinach flavorless. The salad lacked red onion, tomato, olives ,pepperncini and it wasn't dressed with any flavor of herbs or vinegar and olive oil. There was nothing " Royal " about this plate.. It all tasted like a plate of overnight leftovers. Very sad and disappointing... Maybe the chains have something that Nick's doesn't have anymore... which is quality and consistency. I ordered this via door delivery, so I can only imagine having it even fresher would be better. My wife and I shared the Lamb gyro and the chicken bowl. The bowl is 5/5. Loaded with flavor from start to finish. The sauces on top make it top tier. The gyro was full of tender meet and flavorful; however, I wish the fries were crispier. I also would love if there weren't added prices for other items that I feel are traditional in other gyros I've had. For example, feta and cucumber. The ingredients were all fresh. There food was very good and you get a great about for the cost. So glad I found this hidden gem. There is only steet parking availble. The midtown struggle for parking. We parked a block down and walked the rest of the way. Not bad at all. I had a gyro wrap and vegetable soup. Super helpful with answering questions about their menu. I've been the Nicks many times (5-10) but this is my first time reviewing it. Nick's is a simple and familial feeling Greek restaurant serving incredible food for refreshing prices. The service at Nicks is always great, greeting when you walk in and prompt ordering made simple. I've yet to have an experience where my food is not out rather shortly after ordering. This time, I opted for the Pastrami sandwich with soup, and the Gyro Sandwich with salad. (my usual at Nicks) The Gyro sandwich was flavorful, filling, and fresh per usual. Great servings of gyro along with tasty vegetables and a perfect Tzatziki sauce. While the pastrami sandwich could have benefitted greatly from a toasted bun and a few more slices of pastrami, it was still very flavorful and the pastrami was thick and tasty. The vegetable soup was a nice compliment and the broth was delicious. I'll continue to come to Nick's as my go-to Greek food spot for the consistent service and quality of food. I could see how one could become a regular. It's very casual, ordering is casual and the ladies working and cooking were fantastic, welcoming and felt very warm to me. They were out of chicken so I gave it 4 stars because I don't like lamb. So I got the hummus plate which was good, the hummus had a nice flavor. Pita bread was just right. Found this Greek food place by accident. Located on south virginia, Midtown, they have plenty of signs (directions) to get you there. Just follow the arrows :) THE place is very small and cozy. The owner, is a sweet lady (forgot her name), but yes, she has been there for over 13yrs. They have about 10 tables, so make sure to go grab your spot. They also are pretty good on the to go food. I end up ordering the Royale plate. I was curious to try their flavors and I was very surprised, the plate is very generous. Everything goes well together. For those that don't eat meat, they have a vegetarian option. The salad that comes in the plate is very flavorful and well seasoned. I had spent the last few hours walking around Midtown trying to find something that sounded good. I realized I was just a few blocks away from Nick's, a place I hadn't been to in a long time, long enough to basically consider it my first time. The dining space is small with only a handful of tables crammed into what seems to be a foyer of the building. This is exactly the kind of character that can turn some people off because it's not chained to the corporate images we have of restaurants today. But for me, an atmosphere like this gives the experience a more authentic hand made feel. A slight nod to the past where businesses didn't spend tens of thousands of dollars meeting every imaginable code a city could dream up. The selections were the standards for a Greek place. Greek salad. Combo plate. BIGGER combo plate. I, of course, couldn't resist the full Royal Plate with extra gyro meat and everything else they offer. It was filling and delightful and the meat was in chunks and not ribbons. The prices are reasonable and they even have some excellent baklava. Some may say the service sucks and it may have for them. But mine was right on point for a small corner place like this. They cared about me getting my food, and getting my check and getting me on my way. For some reason it reminded me of eating at a restaurant ran by my family or a friend. No insincere fuss...but simple and direct service. I will go back. I'm a Reno local and had never been here before but I've been told they have great gyros. I walked in and stood there for a good 4 mins. Then I looked around and there's an older lady in the kitchen. And there's another lady on one of the tables eating. So the one sitting down asks what she can help with I said I wanted to order a gyro. Then she tells me to tell the lady in the kitchen. So I tell the lady in the kitchen "hello I wanted to order a gyro" without even turning around to look at me she angrily yells at me to wait in the front for the other lady to help me. As a customer I should'nt be pushed back and forth for someone to feel like taking my order. I waited a few more mins and still no acknowledgment i had to just walk out . I was really sad I didn't get my gyro. For how long this place has been open you would think they know a little bit about customer service at least acknowledging the customer, I wouldn't have minded waiting but seemed like they didn't want my business.
