We celebrated two family members birthday's at Nicks. We have a celiac in the family and it's a serious focus when we choose a restaurant. The good staff at Nick's was able to carefully prepare one of the meals gluten-free. All three meals were very good. The standout for me was my Blackened Fish sandwich...It was excellent!! They had Mahi Mahi this evening and the flavors of the fish with the greens, slaw, onion rings and tender brioche buns were superb. The atmosphere inside has a well designed decor. It's popular...capacity seating and high energy...however a little too loud for my taste. Outside patio can be nice, less noisy but traffic noise competes a bit. They have a tight view of the beach...it's not a real feature. Parking off-season is fairly easy in the Glenneyre Parking structure (lot 6). It has tight spaces! During peak season...better to take a trolley into town and walk. read more

I have been coming to Nick's Laguna Beach for many years and it's finally time to leave a review. This place has so much good food and it's nice to go get gelato and walk around Laguna Beach after eating here. The service and food are always great too. My most recent trip, my girlfriend and I ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken ($26) and the Prime Rib Dip Samdwich ($24). Both dishes are a great value since the portions are big and the flavors are really good. Hard to beat the $26 and $24 price. We ended up taking home leftovers since it was so much food. The Buttermilk Fried Chicken is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The breading has a tasty seasoning. The mashed potatoes are creamy and the country gravy is delicious. The buttermilk biscuit is dense and also fluffy at the same time with many layers and a hint of sweetness. The Prime Rib Dip Sandwich is loaded with meat and the au jus and horse radish is super flavorful. Make sure your sandwich has the complimentary grilled onions and havarti cheese. Our waiter asked us when we ordered so all we had to do was say yes. Definitely makes the sandwich even better! This place is known to get pretty crowded at times, so make sure to make a reservation to avoid any wait time. There's also public parking structure nearby on a parallel street north of Nick's. Parking was about $5.50 per hour. read more

I rarely leave reviews, but this experience was so upsetting that I feel obligated to warn others. My brother went in tonight in simply asking for change for a $100 after purchasing a coke (we needed to break the bill to get gelato)-- and was treated with immediate suspicion and disrespect. The employee/manager (male with a dress shirt at the bar) tested the bill with a counterfeit pen, which passed, yet continued to insist something was "off," claiming the numbers looked wrong. He later admitted he "made a mistake," but by that point the damage was done. The way this was handled felt demeaning, accusatory, and completely inappropriate. My brother -- who was the only person of color present was to feel singled out and judged in a way that was deeply uncomfortable. We live in Irvine, my brother is a software engineer, and i am a RN and have never been treated this way; we go to Nicks in Newport often, and we rarely visit South County and after this experience, I never will again. What made this worse was the lack of professionalism or accountability. Instead of calmly declining to break the bill or returning it respectfully, the situation escalated unnecessarily and left us feeling embarrassed and profiled saying he won't be returning the bill until we threatened to call the police . How you treat people matters. This was handled poorly from start to finish, and I will absolutely never return. If you value being treated with basic respect and dignity, and not feel like you're being racially profiled, i strongly suggest taking your business elsewhere. read more

Nicks was everything we thought it would be. The staff was presented well and all very accommodating. We requested a patio table to car and people watch in Laguna. Dillion was our server. He know the menu, presented the specials and made recommendations. Very attentive. We started with drinks The Salty Pear and Nicks Mai Tai both were tasty. We tried the fried asparagus at Dillions suggestion it was cooked perfectly not greasy and delicious. We shared the French Dip and loaded baked potato great proportions. This is a busy restaurant on the bottom of Laguna Hotel. It was highly touted. The window seat view is very relaxing. It was very noisy and had to have a conversation unless you have a big outdoor voice. There's valet parking which is handy on PCH. IMO, I thought it didn't live up to the reputation. The prices are high. Don't recommend the ciaopino. The soup base tasted like tomato soup. So it's iffy. But the ambience is excellent. read more

This restaurant will indubitably leave you full and satisfied! They serve a variety of American dishes with an elevated flair and the portions are huge! Here's what we got: The Prime Rib Dip ($24) A large brioche bun halved and loaded with thinly sliced prime rib. I opted for the complimentary add on of the grilled onions and Havarti cheese which made the sandwich even more flavorful. They served it with red wine au jus and horseradish. I loved dipping the prime rib sandwich in the au jus. The au jus was light in consistency, but had a deep beef and red wine flavor. I also chose the French fries as my side and they paired well with the prime rib dip. Buttermilk Fried Chicken ($26) This dish screams Southern comfort food. It came with 2 pieces of boneless fried chicken, a biscuit, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, and country gravy on top. The fried chicken was cooked to perfection - the coating was light, crispy and flavorful on the outside and although they were thin pieces, they stayed juicy and tender on the inside. It was so tasty with the gravy and the mashed potatoes. Besides the fantastic food, the service was also impeccable. The servers were very attentive and professional. When I asked if we can get the au jus to go, the server offered to pack up a fresh one for us! They also provide a warm hand towel at the end of the meal. We were waiting in line for Gelato Paradiso, and placed a pickup order to get after we got our gelato. When we walked in and some guy (he must've been drunk) ran into to me and the bartender/server ended up apologizing on his behalf, which was so kind of them! Nicks, located in the heart of downtown Laguna Beach across from Hotel Laguna, is a great place to have breakfast, lunch or dinner when visiting Laguna Beach. We visited for my birthday lunch and they seated us at the perfect patio corner table with great people watching views of pedestrians walking by! Our server Spencer was very accommodating and even the manager stopped by to pour my partner's Dogfish IPA and make sure we were happy. I ordered the Ahi Tartare which was fresh and beautifully presented. The asparagus fries I ordered along with it were cooked perfectly and were yummy. I also ordered a Spiced Guava mocktail that was delicious. My partner tried the prime rib dip sandwich for the first time with their potato salad. Sadly, he wasn't thrilled with it and won't be ordering that dish ever again. The meat looked like hash with a lot of white fat, nothing like the pictures shown on Yelp and he told me that it tasted like fat. I had the buttermilk chicken which comes with corn mashed potatoes and a biscuit. Everything was very good! For dessert I had a warm butter cake as this came highly recommended! Nicks came recommended by our hotel. We passed it while shopping and decided to try it out. I was expecting a bar type establishment. I was wrong. It's a small little restaurant with quite a tasty menu selection. I opted for the salad with prime rib and my daughter got the kids meal filet. Soft drinks come out in bottles and you finish off dinner with hot towels. Everything tasted great and everything that went by our table looked great! My cousin recommended the Rib Eye Melt, and I love anything with horseradish mayo. I wish it came with arugula because I felt like it was too heavy on the meat and mayo, and it needed something refreshing to cut the heaviness. Instead of picking fries as my side, I should've gotten the bistro salad because that salad was delicious! I had to steal some salad from the other entree I ordered to eat with the Rib Eye Melt. I also ordered the Bistro plate, which comes with a petite filet mignon, topped with steak butter served on garlic toast, petite bistro salad, and a cup of today's soup. This was all for $26 which was a great deal. The soup was super comforting. My friends ordered the Calamari and I tried a piece. This was the epitome of what good calamari should be. We made a Yelp reservation after a morning at the beach. The restaurant is located on a busy street but we found parking right in front. The place is unassuming from the outside but the inside was nicely decorated, modern, and quite busy. There is a bar in the center of the dining area. Our server, Lorraine, was friendly and efficient. We started with the excellent shrimp taquitos, and had the rib eye melt, blackened fish sandwich, and the prime rib French dip. The sandwiches were served on nice brioche buns and rolls, the slaw was good, meat was tender, fries were crispy. My fish sandwich was very good. Wife's birthday came with a comped dessert and signed bday card... nice touch. This is a great spot to top off a day at the beach. read more

I have had many great meals and service at Nick's. I'm very disappointed tonight that eight guys were allowed to wait in line, as a group, for a seat at the bar. Allowing that many people to suck up the few seats that are available defeats the purpose of giving space for one or two or maybe three people--particularly since I also can't make a reservation for one at a two top. Further, I told the two hosts that I was waiting for a seat at the bar and they just smiled and nodded.
