Ninth Street has been around since I was in college, I think, and I rediscovered them at the Durham Farmers market. They have an artesian skill level for the baked sweet goods. Yes lawd, take yourself there and get a chocolate chip walnut cookie, and a chocolate chip one and the monster cookie that is so good I didn't know it was vegan. Their bread is good, betta than grocery store bread, but NOT better than Gugelhumpt. I'd rate them second, but that is still high praise. read more

I have been eating bread and cookies from ninth street bakery for years, but I hadn't ever gone into their downtown location for a meal. I decided to pop in with some friends for brunch one Saturday morning. I'd seen a brunch menu somewhere online so I was surprised when I walked in to only see a lunch menu (which we were too early for) and told we could only order pastries. My friends and I decided to stick around anyway, and really enjoyed our tea, coffee, and muffins. Although maybe it was just nice to have a cozy place to hang out and visit. There weren't a lot of people dining in so there were plenty of seats, and they have their own parking lot too, which is unheard of for downtown Durham. In general, we'll be back, but I will make sure to have something a little more substantial to eat for breakfast, unless we're there after 11 when they start making sandwiches and stuff. read more

I usually stop in for a ham and cheese croissant. That's my favorite here along with a chocolate croissant. The coffee is ok. I suggest coming before 9:00 a.m. if you want dibs on the ham and cheese croissant because they usually run out of it. You also don't want to sit in here too long to eat or you will start smelling like fresh baked bread. Ninth Street Bakery is one hella solid bakery in downtown Durham, with a loyal following and some amazingly healthy eats. Set in a nondescript warehouse you could be forgiven for walking right by, I visit NSB at least once every time I'm in Bull City. It is a humid Sunday morning and all my other local brunch faves are closed, so I am seated inside NSB in air-conditioned comfort. There is some funky new age soul playing on the boom box and I'm sipping on a pint of kombucha (a fermented tea containing bacteria and yeast), which they serve on tap! Today I ordered an Indian lentil curry daal served over brown rice, and it was hearty and flavorful (though it could have used a tiny bit more salt and seasoning). But hey - this is one of the MAC dishes that all the health food gurus are touting nowadays - and I had to get the week started on a good note before gorging myself on all the other less healthy food Durham has to offer! For the uninitiated, MAC stands for Microbe Accessible Carbohydrate. This is food meant to nourish the microbes in our gut vs. the cells belonging to their naïve "I will eat whatever the establishment markets and sells to me" hosts. While the daal was bland, the salad I had the good sense to order with it was fresh and crisp, and served with a DELISH tahini dressing. And of course, the whole meal went down really well with the sweet effervescent kombucha - did I mention they serve this on tap?! I am quite sure both the salad and the kombucha are MACs as well - so I can unleash my inner gourmand this evening without any guilt. Now that I've had my big MAC meal - I'm off for a little walk around the neighborhood to see what's changed since I was last here a few months ago. We have always supported ninth street bakery at the Durham Farmers Market in Central Park (fun fact at the end of the market they sell things for half off since they really love to sell their products as fresh as possible!). They make SO many kinds of bread too--ryes, oat loafs, sourdough, challah...really any kind of bread you want they will have, and it is all so beautiful! Definitely instagrammable lol But recently we actually went to the bakery itself which is still open and they are practicing safe COVID measures too. If you go to their shop, not only can you get all of their freshly baked products, but they have day old loaves of bread that are much cheaper! We just got two of those including their chocolate babka loaf and my goodness is that chocolate loaf so good! We had a piece toasted with some peanut butter on it for dessert last night and it was great! Can't wait to use it as they suggest to make some killer french toast! And the bakery itself has a full lunch and breakfast menu too--sandwiches, soups, etc. all on their products. But I say get one of their double chocolate cookies that yes they are $1.95 each, but they are pretty big in size and just too perfect of a cookie not to have if you go to their shop. Their cinnamon rolls I also want to try the next morning I go in too! So definitely going to start heading to their bakery more often for the day old loaf specials and those cookies as a treat! read more

We love Ninth Street Bakery!!! They come to the South Durham Farmers Market on Saturday mornings and always have a great variety of breads and pastries. Today we bought a Carmelized Onion Rye (pre-sliced) and can't wait to tear into it. We also got a new pastry (Reuben Croissant) that is out of this world!! I can't imagine Durham without Ninth Street Bakery. They're excellent year-round; during the warmer months I look forward to seeing them at the farmers market or stopping in for a (cheap!) iced coffee. They also have a lot of seasonal treats to offer throughout the year, like king cake for Mardi Gras and hamantaschen. After two years I think I've narrowed down my favorites from them: blueberry cream cheese danish, vegan tartine, biscotti, cakes, black bean chili, curry chicken salad sandwich. They make the best crusty loaf in the Triangle. The soft bread is good as well, but in my opinion the crusty bread is where it's at. Seriously. They will rival what you would find in Europe. I also need to mention that their chocolate babkas are so delicious. Ninth St is also a great lunch spot and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Of note, I signed up for their weekly bread service and it has been a bright spot in this covid-19 epidemic. I thought it would be too much bread, but it is just right for our family. Simple, unpretentious, and some DAMN GOOD bread. I think the dark brown rye was some of the best I've had in a long time. It was so fresh, crusty on the outside, tender and warm on the middle, that I immediately had to get some soup to dip it in. I went with their vegan chili. Unsurprisingly, there was nothing complex or top chef caliber here being mostly black beans and tomatoes in essence. But that bread was so good that I enjoyed the entire bowl of chili thanks to it. Prices were incredibly reasonable especially for this Miami native. I almost wished there was a way to freeze a half dozen loaves and send them home! read more

Personally, I don't quite understand the hype around the bakery. I felt as if I overspent for the quality I received. Perhaps I came too late in the day and my goods weren't as fresh as in the morning. My cinnamon roll and snickerdoodle were both hard and not soft and chewy like one would hope. I've been enjoying baked goods from Ninth Street Bakery for a few years now. My love affair with their break began during Covid, when I partnered up with a friend to split their bread delivery, which was one of the best decisions I have made in my adult life. I've had the occasion to go into the bakery a few times and the people there are so kind and helpful. The only disappointment I have is that I didn't find out Ninth Street Bakery for the first 10+ years I lived in Durham. We stopped in around 3:30 on a Sunday. Sadly enough, the case was almost completely bare with the exception of some Halloween cookies and chocolate cake. Totally understand they probably get hit pretty hard on weekend mornings. We stayed friendly and positive as we were celebrating a birthday and didn't want to put a negative spin on a special day. We each chose a cookie and made the best of it. The person behind the counter seemed really put out that we were there. Again, probably a long day at the bakery. I get it, but having worked in the service industry for a couple decades, you put your game face on and show your appreciation for the business coming your way. This place has an industrial vibe and is tucked in a pretty prime location in Durham downtown! The interior is somewhat misleading to me and reminded me a soup kitchen. They offer a variety of sandwiches and paninis which seem pretty delicious. However, I was disappointed with the flavor and taste of it. My colleague ordered the chicken salad sandwich which was pretty bland and dry. Who doesn't want a satisfying meal on a cold windy day. Trust me, as a meat eater you will not miss the absence of meat in your meal. Other things to try: Challah and/or chocolate babka- great for making French toast. Granola- well paired with Greek yogurt or have it as a side snack. Vegan coconut banana choc chip ball- have it with coffee or a side snack. Sourdough French bread- morning toast with butter or peanut butter. You may also enjoy it with soup. My girlfriend and I are regulars at Ninth Street. The staff is always so pleasant and helpful. They play funky music and it is a great place to be. Obviously we love the pastries and coffee (buy 10 cups of coffee and get a free cup and loaf of bread!) But their lunch is slept on. The Hot Sliced Turkey could be the best sandwich I've ever had. COVID wise they are very safe. We experienced a staff member kindly ask a man to put his mask over his nose and when this rude man denied his request, he handled it with respect and professionalism. read more

This place has been on my radar since it was actually on Ninth St. I love the industrial vibe & how they have made a loading dock pleasant place to hang out. I drive nearly 30 miles just to stock up on bread. My favorite in the Triangle, & omg try the chocolate whoppers! 5 stars for the baked goods! But each time I have purchased a vegetarian sandwich I am sorely disappointed with the portion size. Veggie sandwiches with hardly any veggies and this last time avocado toast with a barely there smear of avocado. I left longingly looking at other customers turkey. Serious sandwich envy. read more
