Ninth Street Espresso can be found on 10th Street of course. It's across the street from Tompkins Square Park. This is just around the library in East Village. It's a small place. They only have a few seats so go early if you have to. I like this better than going to chains. It's always better to buy local. They have a pretty simple menu. Literally it has coffee and espresso. The medium hot coffee is about $3.50, which is a good deal around here. It has a long bench to sit at. The sweetening of the coffee is all done by you, putting in the milks and sweeteners. Inside is nice but this isn't the best place to do work. It's pretty noisy. The coffee machines are loud, and so are the employees yelling. read more

With a friend on a late Sunday afternoon who is savvy with directions we still got lost. Named after a street but it does not help when there are multiple locations in Manhattan. I opt for an ice tea at $3.00 while my friend opt for the standard coffee for $2.50. It is a quaint coffee house to lounge on a lazy Sunday afternoon. No couches to lounge but a bench and tables for the tech gadgets to lean on. Decor is the black and white sheath. Ninth Street Espresso's staff and service is woeful, indeed. I really can't get my head around why so many of the people that work here are so obnoxious. I mean... it's coffee, right? I get it. It's "better" coffee. But it's exhausting trying to figure out how not to be treated like shit by them. Can't it just be an even exchange of money for coffee and we're done here? Does it have to be emotionally fraught? My friend and I were looking for a cafe in the East Village, and we decided to visit Ninth Street Espresso given its proximity and good Yelp reviews. I just had a mean cappuccino from here. I don't know how this place managed to escape my radar as it's only steps from my apartment. This gives Mud severe competition on weekends as the only thing it has going on weekdays is location, location, location. Came here for an iced coffee since it had pretty solid reviews on yelp and was close to home. Have passed by this place a dozen of times and it has always seemed to be a popular spot, always seeing tons of people coming out with a cup of coffee. It wasn't until I yelped the place that I found out they are a chain. I always thought this was a free standing local coffee shop. Very simple, straight-forward menu. I stopped in for an iced coffee after brunch (can you believe the brunch place I went to didn't serve iced coffee?!). This coffee shop surprisingly has a lot of space, but they just have seats along the sides of the wall (benches to the left), high chairs with a bar table to the right. They also have the milk, cup covers and straws in the middle of the table, for whatever reason. They do have a lot of great options to choose from: liquid sugar, vanilla flavoring, etc. Just a little odd how it is right in the middle of the seating area. The opening of this 10th street outpost earlier this year could not have come at a better time. The lines are often a lot shorter than the original location & I can just pop in, get my cappuccino & get the hell out without dodging hipsters, laptops & beatniks. The coffee here is really good & you can tell that the staff know what they're doing & care about the product that they serve. It's a little bit on the pricey side, but I think it's totally worth the little bit of extra money. Normally I'll need 1 or 2 cups to get me going, but at 9th street, 1 & I'm good to go. Thus, my puzzlement when navigating my way to the 10th Street 9th Street Espresso on a recent sunny morning. Snuggled in on the north side of Tompkins Square Park, this small and extremely sparse coffee shop hit the caffeine spot. It's not without pretense, however, a clear indication of Alphabet City gentrification. Stark abstract art spots the walls, there's a shelf but hardly any seating beyond some spindly high stools. The menu has not more than five items ranging from $2.50-$4.50: coffee, latte, cappuccino, Americano and machiatto. It's Abraço-esque but with space. The quality of the coffee is tops, they offer cane syrup for iced drinks and soy is free. When the queue outside Ost is miserably long, I'll be going here for my morning cup from now on. Ninth Street Espresso is some of my favorite coffee in all of East Village/Alphabet city. Not sure where there beans are sourced, but part of me really doesn't care. A good cup of coffee is a good cup of coffee whether it comes from Ecuador, Colombia, or a wombat's backside in Bali. They've got a real minimalist vibe going on. A couple of bar stools for sipping to stay, a few art pieces, some Ninth Street swag like coffee cups and whole beans, and that's about it. Throw in a few baked treats and a nice view of Tompkins Square Park and it's a simple recipe for success. Speaking of baked treats, they have something called a colon blow muffin that seems to make its way to the menu on weekends. I'm assuming it's a quirky way of describing a bran muffin, but nothing about that sounds appealing. I hope someone who's tried it can prove me wrong. If you're having trouble getting things moving, I suggest you ditch the Pepto Bismol and give this holisitic alternative a shot. read more

This afternoon, I had just gone for a run on the East Side and the undersides of my shoes were smeared with dog poop, my nose was running a lot faster than I ever did, and my face was flushed a bright, cardiac-arrest crimson. Walking back to my apartment, I passed by the 10th street location of Ninth Street Espresso, and thought, What's better as a post work-out snack than a delicious diuretic with a side of peanut butter cookie? So that's what I did and it was divine. I liked the cappuccino here even more than the ones at the 9th street location --was it because the foam was creamier and denser and sweeter and the espresso was less bitter? Or was it because my sneakers were completely soaked and I was prone to be positively biased towards anything offering warmth? Who knows. Also, I really like the style of service at both Ninth Street Espresso locations. It's a tiny bit like a stare-down, but there's no hostility in it. It's just like, hey buddy, let's look each other squarely in the eye and be polite and say as few words as possible! And then that's what happens and I like it that way. It makes me sad when baristas are all chatty to other customers and then stone-face me because I'm new or because I wear practical vests. read more

Has the credit crisis become so acute that many people have cut out coffee? Maybe it was too late in the morning (or too early in the afternoon), but there was barely a person in the cafe. The clean, white walls and tasteful wood floor reverberated with the espresso machine's sucking sound. I looked down at my library book...Poor me, reading a library book in an all-but-deserted cafe... Well, the coffee was not bad. But man! this place was hyped to the Nth degree! The guys behind the counter were super friendly as well. Great location too, looking right out over Tompkins Square Park. There's free wifi, so I would definitely come back to do school work. Decent coffee, great iced teas in the summer months. I often go to this location because it's near my M8 bus stop. They don't do decaf unless you want a decaf americano--as do most places. This is too bad, because decaf espresso--which is what it is: espresso beans ground and brewed as a pour-over--gets me wired. There's no restroom, but I never stay in; most people are getting their coffee to take to the dog run or parts unknown. They also offer delicious-looking baked goods, which are never, ever vegan. (One star off for that.) I go here or their original, accurately-named store on 9th street and either place will punch my card. It's a win-win! Oh yeah: we had a friend who lived here before it was made into a commercial storefront.
