Nonnina is my GO TO when people are visiting from out of town. The food is sooo good, comes out so fast, and the service is always really good. I love how each meal comes with free bread to start and olive oil, and then all the pastas and antipasti are pretty reasonably priced but have pretty good portions. The ambience in here is also so gorgeous, each of the different types of chairs and sections are really nice and comfortable. I've tried the burrata salad and vodka pasta and both were so good. The burrata salad is so fresh with jam and prosciutto, and the pasta was so flavorful and tasted really fresh. The orecchiette is also really flavorful and a little spicy due to the ground meat. My friend and I made same day reservations for a Monday night dinner, and I wish that we would have come earlier to enjoy happy hour. Service was great as all staff were hospitable. I was disappointed we weren't able to take advantage of happy hour specials in the main dining room, but we ordered a bunch of different pasta dishes to share and try. I didn't realize these were all such small plates- we had to order a lot to feed a group of 5. Octopus- tasty but very small Caesar salad- like three pieces of lettuce! Came here for my birthday dinner during a weekday. I had the best cocktail I've ever had here. The Cristina, it was light, fizzy and include my fav-elderflower liqueur. The squid ink pasta with lobster was ahmazing and also the crispy Brussels sprouts were really good. I took a tiramisu home for my sister but she didn't like it. This place is so good, I went back the following weekend and ordered the same exact dish. The gluten free pasta is so soft and you can hardly tell it's gluten free. Truffle mushroom pasta was way too good, I wanted like 3 orders of it! We stopped in for a late lunch on a Wednesday. The restaurant was pretty empty, so our food came quickly. I ordered the chicken parm. I rarely send back food, but I had to with this. The chicken was extremely dry, to the point of being nearly inedible. The "crust" was completely soft, not crispy at all. We came at 2 p.m. and I truly wonder if this was made during lunchtime and then reheated for me in the microwave. They were gracious in removing it from the bill and offering me something else. We were in a rush, so I just finished my side of spicy cauliflower. The cauliflower was perfectly cooked and deliciously flavored. I've wanted to try Nonnina for a while now since it has a dog menu but had to wait through the winter! We came on a weekday for lunch without reservation and they were so sweet to set up the outdoor patio for our table with a puppers to get as much of the sun out of our eyes. Amazing service. For the table, we shared the calamari, roasted octopus, meatball sub, and squid ink spaghetti. The calamari was flavored perfectly but even better with the lemon caper aioli and I really enjoyed the thin zucchini noodles. I wasn't able to try the roasted octopus because my parents demolished it in minutes. I'm guessing it is because it was beyond delicious!! The meatball sub packed a punch. I thought it would be sickening with the marinara but the whole concoction is genius and the bread was not soggy! The squid ink pasta was probably my favorite because it was not too heavy but had a good generous amount of lobster. And of course, my puppers enjoyed his healthy who's a good boy dish and they were so kind to give him a cute nonnina doggy bandana. We definitely will be back for more! read more

If you go, don't order anything custom, like substituting gnocchi, or you might get the smallest portion ever. I was very disappointed in my visit, due to the fact that I paid $25 plus tax and tip for the tiniest serving I've ever seen. I wanted to try the vodka sauce with gnocchi, which the waiter said I could do, and I expected a normal portion of gnocchi. However, I got about 10 gnocchi pieces, which was laughably small, while everyone else I went with had normal portions. I finished eating in a minute or two and sat there for so long while everyone else was still eating, wishing I had been given an actual portion. Everyone I was with commented on how small it was. I wish I took a picture but I was too in shock at how small it was. And I didn't even have meat or anything in it - just potato, cheese, and tomato sauce, so it's not like it costs them very much to make. I had to fill up on the complimentary bread, because I was starving after eating my "meal". What I got to eat was good, but not nearly good enough to pay that much for the tiniest portion ever. read more

Sometimes when a place offers reservations that are too readily available, you take it for granted and instead fall into the trap of chasing those harder to get reservations that usually aren't worth the hype. I always saw Nonnina on Open Table but unfortunately treated it as a backup option in case I couldn't find anything better. Now I regret that it took so long to check it out because we had a fantastic dinner here. We were seated in what looked to be an extension to the original space. Even though it was winter, this area was heated really well and you didn't feel like you were outside. The service was on point all night. The food was coursed out at a good pace, waters were always topped off, and they checked on us often enough where we never had to wait at all when we needed something. Nonnina had some solid appetizers. The free bread basket they give you is loaded with Focaccia and some sort of garlic bread. My wife and I shared a Caesar salad and they were nice enough to bring it out in two separate portions. Finally, the arancini was just awesome. They gave a generous portion of 4 pieces with a good amount of sauce. Super crispy on the outside and piping hot and cheesy on the inside. Doesn't get much better. Everyone has different criteria on what makes a good pasta. For me, I care most about pasta texture and sauce coverage. The noodles have to be al dente and pretty firm on each bite. It doesn't even have to be freshly hand-made pasta as long as it's cooked right. As for the sauce, I don't need any fancy ingredients, but I need an ample amount of sauce to coat the noodles and bold enough flavor where it doesn't just taste like pure cream. I'm not sure if my standards are too simple, but I thought Nonnina had some of the best pastas I've had in Chicago. The Truffle Bucatini was a literal flavor bomb. Creamy truffle sauce mixed with sliced wild mushrooms, freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese, and an egg yolk for even more richness. The bucatini was cooked absolutely perfectly and I loved the hollow center of the noodles that filled up with sauce. Similarly, the Vodka Rigatoni was equally as satisfying. The rigatoni noodles were cut long, cooked super al dente, and filled up with sauce in the center. There was good sauce coverage and the flavor had the right balance of creaminess and tang. It's probably now my favorite vodka pasta in Chicago, and I'm not sure what would make Alla Vita, Ciccio Mio, Gilt Bar, or even Carbone in NYC considered any better. Overall, Nonnina was a surprisingly great dinner. I was expecting some overpriced, generic River North Italian restaurant but came away thinking they have some of the best pasta dishes in Chicago. read more

Very cute ambiance for this Italian place! We did the Chicago Restaurant Week lunch menu on the weekend! It was a very nice deal, especially to be offered in the weekend, but the portions of everything are on the smaller side so don't expect it to be super filling. The appetizers were a good size and great. I enjoyed the Burrata salad. For the entrees, as others have mentioned the pasta is very Al dente so don't get it unless you enjoy chewy pasta. Otherwise the carbonara and ravioli were good. My only complaint is the ravioli (3 small ravioli) was noticeably smaller portions than everything else and especially than the meat/fish dishes. This seems unfair as it's the only vegetarian option and not as filling to begin with and probably cheaper to make based on ingredients. The dessert was FANTASTIC - still thinking about the refreshing sorbet and delicious panna cotta. We had a couple brunch drinks and they were good too. Pizza was a little too thin and small for what you pay but still tasted great. I would have preferred sitting inside the restaurant as supposed to the outdoor covered patio. I've been here a lot. I really love this place. I recently got one of the specials that was a lemon, goat cheese, cauliflower risotto. It was delicious. My date got the gnocchi bolognese and said it was phenomenal. I've had the vodka pasta, gnocchi and ravioli here. Vodka pasta I would say was my least favorite thing here. The wine list is pretty good too. Definitely recommend stopping in for a date night. Also have been to their sandwich stop next door. The sandwiches are large and tasty. I was really happy with my experience at Nonnina. Me and my girlfriend got the rigatoni vodka along with the lobster squid ink pasta. Everything was great and the quality was really good. For dessert we got some gelato which was good and the almond cake. The cake was a bit on the dryer side but it was still great, I think if they paired it with strawberry compot & some mixed fruits with cream it would be perfect.
