Went on Valentine's Day. Pappardelle and Rigatoni Vodka pasta was delicious! Pappardelle came with a good serving of meat. Pizza was a little too thin and small for what you pay but still tasted great. I would have preferred sitting inside the restaurant as supposed to the outdoor covered patio. Yesterday, we made an impromptu decision to check out @nonninachicago for Chicago restaurant week lunch and it was a great experience! Great food (and portions) for the price! For the first course, I had the minestrone soup . It was fresh and flavorful. Next, I had the fettuccine . I appreciated the variety of vegetables in the pasta and how the plate came out steaming hot. The dessert was by far my favorite. The panna cotta was eggless and so creamy! I was really happy with my experience at Nonnina. Me and my girlfriend got the rigatoni vodka along with the lobster squid ink pasta. Everything was great and the quality was really good. For dessert we got some gelato which was good and the almond cake. The cake was a bit on the dryer side but it was still great, I think if they paired it with strawberry compot & some mixed fruits with cream it would be perfect. I loved the ambiance as well, it was a really cute restaurant. 4 stars for disappointing seems odd, but I would definitely go back. I just expected a fully 5 star experience based on what others had told me. We were seated a bit near the door, which was annoying at first, but we got used to it. The bistro style chairs aren't really that comfortable, and we were a bit higher up compared to the table than our friends sitting on the couch were, opposite us. This is something they should consider for such a seemingly high level experience. Another bizarre thing was how joyless and flat the service was. The woman bussing the tables was friendly and a bit awkward. But the waiter...we never even learned his name. I am not saying that he needed to be super hover-y or fake in enthusiasm at all. But he came to our table maybe 4 times the whole night and was basically zipped in and out. He wasn't rude, but it didn't seem like he really cared at all. The Restaurant Week courses went downhill over time, but the first course was lovely! The seafood salad had delicious pieces of fresh seafood with arugula and some julienned vegetables. All of it came together super well! The vinaigrette was good - the vanilla flavor that poked through a bit was kind of weird, but I still liked the dish a lot overall. After that, I tried their pasta (is "when in Rome" too on the nose?). It was pretty flavorful, though perhaps a bit of a letdown. Some of the noodles were lukewarm at best, and others were hot. It was strange, like when you reheat leftovers almost. The RW prices were not that high, but this is usually a high-end restaurant, price-wise, so it is kind of shocking that they were sending out unevenly heated food. If I want unevenly heated leftovers, I'll use my own microwave. Finally, the panna cotta had a lovely vanilla flavor, though it was a bit grainy. The food quality here, especially the seafood salad, is something I can tell is very good indeed. I suspect that my food's slapdash (at times) presentation was likely due to Restaurant Week. In that sense, just because a group is there for Restaurant Week, it doesn't mean you have to phone it in and treat their less expensive meal as less important. read more

I went here for restaurant and I think the lunch menu was a good bang for your buck. For $25, we could get three courses. I got the cauliflower salad, the ravioli and the panna cotta. The ravioli was good, but the sauce was mediocre. The salad was filling, I really loved the chickpea and polenta crouton they had in there. The panna cotta was delightful! Would you like a meal with your salad I'll get right to the point and say I was a little disappointed in my meal. I ordered the roasted duck or duck breast, which came with a cauliflower salad. There were 2 small nuggets of duck breast and the rest was this salad. It's like I ordered a cauliflower salad with a side of duck breast....but no, that's not what I ordered or how it's portrayed on the menu. The 2 nuggets of duck breast were eaten in several bites, but I couldn't even finish the cauliflower salad there was so much of it. I will say the meal itself was very good, and I don't have any issues with flavors or how it was cooked.... really just how they decided to make it more about the salad. We had a bottle of wine that was actually reasonably priced, the fritto misto, the mafalde pasta, and the bucatini. Everything was very good. The fritto misto was lightly battered and perfectly fried - love that there's multiple types of seafood in it! The mafalde (squid ink pasta) was so good! There's a nice tiny bite of spice to it too. I tasted the crab and the shrimp as promised. My friend said the bucatini was also very good - but you have to like seeing egg yolk. What a great dinner! We made a reservation for Saturday night right on the OpenTable app, nice and easy. Our reservation was for 8pm because earlier slots were all booked. Even at 8pm it was decently busy which is a good sign :) The ambiance was very romantic. We ordered the grilled octopus and burrata for starters. So so good! Afterwards I ordered the squid pasta for entree and hubby got the prosciutto pizza. Veryyy delicious and filling ! We didn't have room for dessert. We also got a nice bottle of white wine. The food at Nonnina is good.. not great. But good and relatively cheap for the quality and location being in river north. I had some pizza and the ragatoni, both of which were tasty! But there is another level of italian present in Chicago. The service at Nonnina was very good, our servers were on top of all of our requests and able to answer the questions that we had about the menu. I really enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant, the inside is very trendy with vines hanging, an open kitchen view behind the bar which is always cool. They also have a patio that is very old looking which gives off an oddly rustic feeling, but for some reason it fits. Went in solo on a business trip at five pm on a Monday and was seated immediately (although there were patrons in the bar there was only one other two top table in the dining room). Nice dining room next to the Westin River North where I was staying. I was greeted by a busboy and offered sparkling or still water. After receiving my water I was ignored by the entire staff while they finished setting up the dining room for dinner for close to ten minutes . As I was about to get up and leave my waiter came to ask me for my drink order. I ordered a Peroni and the chicken Parmesan and was served relatively quickly. The pasta and marinara sauce were good but the chicken was so tough the butter knife provided to cut it was inadequate and it was partially burned and the breaded portion that was not burned was mushy. I gave up halfway through the chicken and finished the pasta. When the waiter returned and asked if I wanted a box for the rest of my chicken I said no and he did not seem surprised. Understanding that chicken parm is not an Italian classic it was honestly the worst I have ever had and the worst meal I have ever had in the many times I have dined in Chicago, let alone River North. Came recommended from the Westin Chicago River North so don't trust their concierge. I can early on a Friday (530) so they can't say they were too busy. Over 15 minutes until I got a drink. The grilled peach special had good flavor but the peaches were underripe and under grilled (ie still crunchy). I then had the lasagna which was a special. This was my first dine for chicago restaurant week and it did not disappoint. I started out with the short rib meat ball with crostini then followed with the swordfish. It was the perfect size and I loved the artichokes it was paired with. Finished up with the Nutella panna cotta and my companion got the cannoli. The space is adorable, we sat in the enclosed patio and would up with a free show as a woman got in a huge fight with her friends and tried to storm out past our table and had to turn around and walk back past then as the door by us was not an exit. One of my new favorite Italian restaurants. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by friendly hostesses and staff who welcome you and your party to your seats. Luckily, we were seated on the patio-esque portion of the restaurant where we were able to enjoy a bit of the outdoor view. Our waiter helped us with our drink selections- the elder flower liqueur infused with vodka for a sweet taste of the Lucia. We then ordered the Fritto Misto and Grilled Octopus to quench our seafood cravings. The pesto definitely took the cake for the Fritto Misto dish as the calamari absolutely melted in our mouths with the selection of flavor. The grilled octopus, although decadent looking and flavorful throughout, didn't have as much taste for the squid itself. Nonetheless, I implore you to try it for yourself! For dinner, I ordered the Rigatoni which although is namely a safe choice, at first was a bit undercooked. We brought this to the attention of our waiter who happily exchanged it for a more correct batch. We were then given a delicious Tiramasu and Cannolis which melted to the touch. Caprese salad Linguine Genovese Gelato Dining companion: Carbonara The caprese salad was great, and I was looking forward to our entree. Unfortunately, we were both disappointed.
