This is easily the best food I've had in the city! Ahi tostada and ribeye taco are 10/10! Service gives a chill attentive. Amazing.

I was the first (or close to it) to review Tahona Mercado in August of 2021. Seems like they have been there longer than that. It's always been a fantastic mercado. I have been buying really nice tequilas for years but my tastes changed a bit so I haven't been in like I used to in the early years. I saw the slow transition to selling more fresh food items. I never tried any because I usually have dinner plans or other ideas. The food though has been getting a lot of buzz for a while now so I finally decided to try it tonight (and also thanks to their text messages I receive reminding me it's Taco Tuesday). I got esquites, a chicken tinga and beef quesabirria taco. I am still amazed as I type these words how good everything was. Frankly I can't believe they are putting out tacos of this caliber off a tiny little electric griddle and not much else. They were so good I went back up and got a carnitas taco also. They are loaded with meat unlike a lot of shops which give you scant portions. The flavors of everything are absolutely stunning. All the meats are spiced to absolute perfection. Even the tiniest bit saltier and they'd be too salty. They aren't though and they hang in that perfect balance of spiciness that had me doing the disbelief head turn with every bite. Seriously. On top of that they are served hot off the grill so they are usually too hot to even pick up for a few minutes and piping hot when you eat them. Truly up there with the best tacos I've ever had and I thought I'd had the best also. I couldn't be happier to see Steven and Emily knocking it out of the park like this. They're a wonderful couple who deserves the recognition they are getting. I know the secret sauce by the way. They have both always had nothing but passion about selling the very best products from Mexico they can source. They live that passion and they wouldn't be content serving food that isn't the very best either. read more

Looking for a quick bite for a late lunch we found this corner cafe gem and it really hit the spot. It's a very pleasant place with a coffee bar area and further down a place to get food. They had limited choices available from the menu, but still enough for a satisfying selection. We decided to try the Molletes and each ordered one. It comes on toasted sourdough, with a black bean spread, melted gouda, pico de gallo, salsa morita, crema and cilantro. It's made in an open sandwich style. Glasses of water had been brought to the table with a container of napkins and eating utensils. Made fresh, oh my goodness it was delicious. Service is so attentive and top notch. It's such a comfortable place and there's a large wine and liqour shop at the back. Well worth a visit. read more

I stayed down the street from Tahoba Mercado for a long weekend and ended up coming in every single day. The food was absolutely amazing with a great variety on the menu. It was definitely exactly what I needed after a day at a music festival. The atmosphere was bright and inviting, the staff was friendly and the food came out quickly. They also had large tables that could accommodate a large group which was nice. I would definitely recommend Tahona Mercado if you're in the area! Was going to concert at the Masonic and was trying to find a place eat before the show. I found this hidden gem. Used to be a market and now they have a variety of simple dishes...tacos, quesadillas, tortas and other Mexican dishes. From the moment you walk into Tahona Mercado, it's crystal clear just how unique & specialized this shop is. I didn't count how many varieties of tequila there are, I am just in awe. If tequila, or mezcal, is your thing, you're going to love it here. I speak way more food than drink. The menu here is very limited, but the food is wow. Tacos that look & taste like abuela did the cooking herself even though you know she didn't because the "kitchen" is right in front of you in full view. This is not fast food. Your dish is made to order. This gives you the golden opportunity to check out the impressive inventory. It might be more shop than cafe per se, but don't let that stop you from ordering dinner. Wow! Tahona Mercado blew my mind! Came here on a Tuesday and was intrigued by this unassuming restaurant/market. I didn't have high expectations since I've recently been going to a few highly rated newish restaurants and have been left dissatisfied. This experience was the complete opposite. The cashier was really nice and even took the time to explain the specials of the day to us. My husband and I got a few tacos to try. Ribeye taco (5/5)- well seasoned, tender ribeye. The taco was a masterpiece and each bite was so good, I ordered another one after we finished. Birria taco (4.8/5)- the consommé wasn't too salty but just felt like it was missing a little something. The beef was succulent and juicy. The cheese was melted to perfection and held up the taco well. Chicken tinga taco (4.7/5)- when we got the taco, I was really expecting for the chicken to be dry since it looked that way but I was wrong! Chicken was cooked to perfection and was very juicy! Everyone was so kind and the food here is phenomenal! I'm excited to come back and try their other items. read more

A friend and I went here for brunch and it was a cute cafe with excellent coffee and food! We got the molletes from their brunch which was a delicious vegetarian option. For coffee, we got the espresso tonic which was light and had sweet essence to it even without adding syrup. It's also a spirits store so the seating is a bit limited, you order at the front and get a number and they bring you your food. The staff is super friendly. We had a show at Grace Cathedral and we thought, let's eat in the neighborhood before the light show. I yelped and Tahona Mercado pops us. Hmmmm, interesting. It's not a full blown restaurant. It's a grocery store/restaurant combination. Lovely. We arrived and were so happy with the visual setup. Nice and clean, so we said, "why not?" We met Reuben who took our order. Unfortunately, everything we wanted was sold out. Appears that they do a better brunch lunch business. So we acclimated to what they were able to make. I call it "gourmet street food." While waiting for our tacos, we were able to look around at all the tequilas, mezcals and Mexican food offerings. The tortilla on our tacos was definitely a step above. The taste was corn-y and delicious. We enjoyed our meal, but felt it was a tad expensive. We will definitely come back to try breakfast/brunch. read more

In all honesty I was a little shocked at the how dirty this place was (including the inside of the fridges etc). There were flies circling outside of the entrance as well as inside and it smelled like bad or old fruit. I can't quite figure this place out - the hours are really strange, they always seem to be out of their main dishes, and there's never really anyone ever in there. I got a latte because I felt bad for the guy that was in there but unless something drastically changes I'll never be back. read more

I love how simple ingredients can pack a lot of flavor and textures. That's why chilaquiles is one of my favorite dishes! And I'm always on the lookout for them in San Francisco. This one is from Tahona Mercado in Nob Hill. It is a specialty shop highlighting ingredients that exemplify the culinary richness of Mexico. And on weekends, they have a brunch menu. So when I saw chilaquiles as I passed their store one evening, I vowed to return to try them. And they're really good! The eggs were over easy, so the runny yolk added a velvety richness to the crispy tortilla chips. The salsa was tangy and spicy, while the cream added a cooling effect. There is an option to add meat, but honestly I just really love the simplicity of eggs, salsa, and tortilla. I went back a week or so later to try their breakfast taco. The portion size is more on the "snack" size, at least for me. I wasn't too hungry, and it was just enough to sustain my walk to Pac Heights. The tortilla was so yummy! It had just enough firmness to hold up the taco, but still soft enough for a satisfying bite. The egg was nicely fried. The bacon added a savory fattiness that was balanced with the acidity from the salsa verde. I paired it with fresh horchata for a cinnamon-y finish. Service was friendly and I got my food pretty quickly. Dining is standing only by the window, and the bar area is not very long. There was maybe only one or two people there times I've eaten here so I've always found a place to eat. I'm so glad to have passed this store when I was wandering Nob Hill. I don't cook much at home anymore, but coming here gets me inspired to try cooking a Mexican dish. Or at least make a delicious Mexican hot chocolate using the brands they offer. I picked up the crickets in lime and chile, it's a great party favor with friends. I also love the champagne packages. They have such a neat selection of cooking goods, tequila, drinks, sauces, appetizers, chips, machas, pupusas, and food to cook with, as well as horchata ice cream and fresh Rize Up bread! My friend picked Tahona Mercado as another one of our culinary adventures in the city. The ribeye tacos and quesa birria tacos brought us up here. It was quite the experience here the first time, and we returned this past weekend and ordered an abnormal amount of food for two. It's inside what feels like a classy, neighborhood joint. The casual atmosphere feels very welcoming despite the limited seating and small space. The staff here is super nice, and of course, the food is amazing. The ribeye and quesa birria tacos are my favorite. I love the consommé which comes with the quesa birria tacos. If you don't want to pour it all over your taco, it's great to drink also! The grilled sourdough toast here is excellent. Have it your way with a fancy avocado spread or a Molletes, which is black bean spread, melted gouda, pico de gallo, and more! The ahi tuna tostada came with chips, but it seems it's on an actual tostada sometimes. It was simple, fresh goodness with cucumber. The horchata here is the best I've ever tasted, also. Get a shot of tequila blanco in it for fun or in the Agua Fresca. I have so much more to explore on the menu. I am looking forward to trying that chicken tortilla soup one day! Considering I had visited this place at least 5 times within a week... needless to say I should leave it a positive review. I'll start off with what wasn't my favorite first. I'm not a huge carnitas guy, and the carnitas torta wasn't my cup of tea. If anyone remembers the cubano sandwich at the Latino gastropub in the sunset, pre-Covid, that Rusty Ladle ended up replacing - then it is pretty reminiscent of that style but ultimately a torta and not a cubano. But like I said don't let me bias your experience or desire to get a carnitas anything if that's what you like. Moving on... Everything else is banger after banger! There weekly specials are great too. It is a little bit out of the way compared to the rest of the Mexican food scene around mission. But the bangers include: Ribeye taco Maitake taco. That's what Steve the bossman said is their moneymaker(hence why they are not part of any weekly specials). The double stacked $6 ground beef taco on Monday is an upgrade from the typical Taco Bell taco. It's so fun to eat- and great if you're trying to have Taco Bell without the guaranteed trip to the bathroom. Also recommend the chicken tinga tacos and Breakfast tacos(only on weekends) Now the most amazing dish: the mole. My god was this thing amazing. Literally eyes rolling back in my head kind of experience. One of those meals that can make you question every meal you've had of the same genre and think you've been missing out. I say "the mole" but it was really a pool of mole with a tamal in the middle that had this herbal essence with each bite that elevated the dish. I've never had anything like this. The mole is only available during weekend brunch, but the tamal itself is available always. Do yourself a favor and come on the weekends and thank me later. Top it off, it's located in a great location and there is a small neighborhood convenience market called La Beau nearby to get fresh papaya and cigarettes. The vibe on that one street is amazing and you can always walk to California or Polk if you get bored. Such a hidden gem! read more

You can smell the homemade tortillas from outside the market, which in it of itself is compelling enough for a visit. Inside there is a very curated assortment of high quality mezcal, tequila and other spirits along with a nice selection of beer. They have a small but diverse menu and the staff is very friendly. Was going to Grace Cathedral for the AURA experience. I arrived a bit early and checked Yelp for somewhere nearby to grab a light dinner. Tahona Mercado popped as a good option so I walked the block or two over there. I wasn't super hungry. Got the ahi tostada and a single quesabirria taco. Food was delicious! The brunch menu looks awesome and i would love to come back to try it out. They also have an amazing selection of mezcal and tequila bottles available for purchase, along with various other imported goods. But most of all, the thing that will stick with me the most was the friendliness and kindness of the owners, a husband and wife team who were working there together. Only stand up counters along the front window, but this is an astonishingly tasty taco/tamales/tostada place. Just back from Mexico City--and it's like I never left. Atun (Tuna) tostadas that are fresh, clean, and delicious; Birria tacos that are like I'm standing in Roma Norte or Juarez, or the street markets eating in Mexico City last week. Totally worth it. Also, astonishing tequila/Mezcal selections--and--crickets and ants! (Oaxaca for the win)--and ground heritage blue corn masa to make your own Mexican at home from scratch! Amazing. The team running is is partly out of the former Michelin one star, Cala, which was in Hayes Valley and had an illustrious run before the pandemic. So, now, this all makes sense. read more

I just love this place, the owners are so friendly, it feels great coming in the shop. It's a great place to get your everyday bottle, or a special or (very special) gift for someone. They also have some great grab and go drinks (ranch waters, Palomas, mezcal/soda!) and other food items in the cooler, and then of course there is the food counter. OMG, the tacos, to die for. So easy to pop in here and grab a bite! I just had a breakfast taco for the first time, and it was perfection! Try the ribeye, the maitake too! I haven't had the chilaquiles but I saw them go out and they look delicious! Also, Rize Up bread! and other unique dry goods on their shelves are a treat to comb through for your culinary needs.
