[[HIGHLIGHT]]Loyal customer for 3 years -- but the emergency response fell apart when I needed it[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I've used Northstar for three years, was a member, and wanted to keep giving them my business, so this isn't easy to write. My recently installed water heater failed at my Big Bear rental with guests on-site. When another contractor came out, he found the original Northstar install used the wrong orifice for our elevation and wasn't de-rated for the altitude -- which he put in writing, and which likely caused the early failure. When I called Northstar, they wanted to charge me to come look at their own work and wouldn't offer anything same-day, even with guests sitting there without hot water. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I escalated to two managers, Jessica and Luis. They both called, I called back within 10 minutes, and I was told they'd already left for the day and would follow up Monday. Never followed up.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] With a rental emergency in progress, Monday wasn't an option -- I paid another company $822 to fix it that day. Honestly, the fix I'd have wanted was simple: own the elevation mistake, get someone out quickly, and make it right. Any of that would've kept me as a customer. My advice to other Big Bear owners -- confirm any install is calibrated for our altitude, and keep a backup plumber on hand for the moments that actually count. read more

In May 2025 I called Northstar to have them check my furnace as I was going to be traveling for 4 months. They noted that I had a lot of animal activity in my ducts and recommended I get a new furnace and duct system. I had several systems to choose from, with warranties, insulation, etc. to consider. I chose a system that cost around $23K. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I had to ask for the invoice and the work that was done (after the fact).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They did a good job - in one day they had 3 trucks and many men, and completely replaced my furnace and duct system. In October, they notified me that as part of their warranty that they would check and service my water heater. I agreed to let them do that. On October 16, 2025, they came out and began servicing my water heater. In the process, the technician and I viewed the venting system (it vents out to the back of my basement, a bit far from the actual water heater). He said my water heater was old (~20 years old) and it would be better if it vented straight through the concrete wall to the outside. I agreed that it was old and definitely considered getting a new water heater with a new venting system. He quoted me around $4500 and said it could be installed the next day. At first, I agreed, but then spoke to my local plumber who knows my water heater and plumbing system very well. He advised me in very strong terms not to get the new water heater and in no uncertain terms, told Northstar to go back down the hill. I sensed the technician was irritated, as just before I called my plumber, I overheard him bragging to his admin that he had made a sale. He hastily completed servicing the water heater and left. I went into town for about 2 hours and when I returned, the carbon monoxide alarm was sounding. At first I thought it was the smoke alarm and wasn't sure what was going on - because it was cold outside, I had the furnace on, bringing heat (and CO) into my cabin. I called the fire department who advised me to stay outside on the porch. They arrived (3 guys) with their equipment and quickly found that the CO in my house was measuring at around 100 ppm, with higher levels in the basement. I'd mentioned that the water heater had just gotten serviced and that might be the problem, but as far as I can remember, they couldn't find the source of the problem. They mentioned that if this CO were to continue to flow into my house, I might be passed out in 6 hours!!!! They called Southwest Gas to inspect my property and soon he found that the vent from the water heater had been dislodged (he said it would have taken a lot of force), bringing CO into the basement and subsequently into my house. He fixed the problem and the next day, my local plumber confirmed that it was fixed. I was able to sleep in my house that night, but of course concerned... [[HIGHLIGHT]]The next day I called Northstar and after several conversations and my advice that they get in touch with the technician and take action, he apparently admitted that he had dislodged the vent.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I never heard anything further from them as to how they might take accountability for this issue or how they would never allow it to happen again. Based on my experience with Northstar, I would never recommend them, unfortunately. While I think they did a good efficient and thorough job with my furnace replacement and duct work (and charged a lot, without an invoice until I asked for it), they absolutely put my life at risk servicing my water heater and should be held accountable for that. Without my CO detector, I probably would not be here today since CO is invisible and undetectable via smell/sight. read more

That was a least 5-years ago and would recommend Northstar to anyone with plumbing and or HVAC needs. Prompt, professional, friendly but most importantly quality work. My tankless water heater had a leak. Tech said I needed a new one for 10k! $12.00 part fixed it. Our regular plumber laughed at us when we told him.... then shook his head. We knew something was off when he first quoted the price. It's sad how businesses try to make up for slow sales I should have looked at reviews before calling them. I am writing this review of Northstar Plumbing's absolute horrible experience that I had and still dealing with since November. I called them out to replace a pressure valve on the service line to my house. The plumber DID NOT turn off the water line from the main to the house and he ended up breaking the line which resulted in thousands of dollars in damages & repairs to the 1st floor inside my cabin and damaged the retaining wall from the atrociously horrible work their crew did (see pictures). I want to stress how kind & calm I was about this incident; because we all make mistakes; which leads me to my negative review of this company. They refused to take ANY responsibility at all and have zero integrity; which lead me to have to file an insurance claim and are trying to stick me with the bill of $7,000 because of them saying the entire service line needed replacement. On top of all this, they virtually signed me up for a credit company that I'm battling with as fraud from Northstar Plumbing. I'm going to be contacting the Better Business Bureau and more than likely filing a lawsuit against them as well. In closing I would never use this company if you need any kind of work done. My family has a quaint little vacation cabin in Arrowhead. We came up after months to find the water heater had taken its last breath. I called the last plumber we used and found he retired and sold to Northstar. I assumed they would keep the same level of professionalism and service. I was right. Our faucet was replaced recently but installed incorrectly. It was unstable, wobbled horribly, nozzle was not retracting, and the hot/cold water was reversed. Basically, whoever did it had no idea what they were doing. Jesus came to the rediagnosed the problem, explained the work, gave us a quote, and proceeded to fix everything. He's professional, pleasant, and did an excellent job. He even gave us advice on how to fix another problem in the bathroom. Based on that success, I again received a mailed solicitation to my cabin in Big Bear Lake. This time, however, the technician was only interested in selling me an expensive new system.
