This place has great drink prices, tasty appie bread and dip, incredible service, and the worst food my group and I have had in a very, very long time. We all got home and felt ill. 3 of us had pizzas, one had salmon, and one had a burger. Please just go here for a drink...don't eat food here. On this particular evening, we never even got to the food.... I have always found NYAJs in Needham and Watertown a good overall experience - The Norwell location, on the other hand is consistently a problem and this past Saturday night was the last time I will ever go! Our party of 2 arrived at 6:07, put our name in and were told it would be about a 25 minute wait. That's a standard, acceptable amount of time for dinner hour on a busy Saturday evening. Then we waited and waited and waited. Watching a harried, inefficient manager and hostess at their work, we watched while they continued to seat parties who had come in after us. Their explanation after one hour, "they called ahead". Okay, what about the party of 6 who knew the management and were seated within 30 minutes of arriving, after, mind you, being offered free slices of pizza and sodas for their kids while they waited their half hour. The waiting area is very small and certainly, we must have been observed growing more annoyed by the moment. No apology, no acknowledgement, nothing. After the 3rd party of 2, who had arrived after us was ushered past us, I approached the hostess again, aside a gentleman who was complaining of the same runaround about seating time with 2 younger grandchildren with him. Her explanation, we're doing the best we can. The manager's response, "it's not my fault there are tables of people who have been sitting for two hours" - nothing we can do. Really??? How about letting the bar wait staff know that the first come seating in the bar is for waiting cliental as of now, how about acknowledging the unhappy patrons lingering in the waiting area and offering everyone a complementary bite to take the edge off, how about splitting a table of 6 between the parties of 2 and 3 who have been waiting for an hour and a half at this point?!?!?! Well, after an hour and a half, we walked out. The food is good, but at that point, who wants to pay for such a bad pre-dining experience? And it's not THAT good - so many other choices in the area. We don't need NYAJs on our list - lousy management has plagued this location from the beginning. We'll never return to Norwell. read more

yeah, this is a chain but like the 9s its a local chain and they do their thing pretty well. Had a biz lunch here last week and it was decent, the service was very good and they go out of their way to welcome you etc.... Its all scripted and forced like the 9s but better than rudeness! I had the balsamic chicken with arugala and it was good, all in all, similar to Bertuccis but a more eclectic menu. If you are stuck in the horror of chain food land (Olive Garden,Smokey Bones, Bugaboo etc....) this is better and at least locally based. read more

Not Your Average Joe's is, well, not your average joe's. It's amazing. Such an eclectic menu and all of it good. We had the chicken potstickers, voodoo chicken pizza, an IPA, the fancy margarita, and a drink named Bob. The only thing I would not get again was Bob. He was fine but not above average and I think many of the other drinks would be better. Love the patio. Love the view. The manager came and spoke to us personally. They take feedback to heart. This place is awesome. I've been there on several occasions. It's a nice family friendly restaurant but also caters to those who just want to grab a beer in the bar that is nicely sectioned away from the dining area. They have some really great beers on tap. It was here that I actually found my new favorite beer-Oskar Blues Old Chub. Yummy! Waitstaff is very friendly-I've always had pleasant servers who on some occasions went out of their way to make my experience a good one. I like how the manager is always walking around (but not hovering) making sure everything is good. They usually give out $5 coupons for your next visit (they have no expiration date). Food is delicious-on the heavy side however. Stay away from the risotto fritters (or whatever their called) very very very bland-tasted like paper. Actually, I won't insult paper, because even paper tasted better than those. Sorry Joes. Theres ample parking in the back. Restaurant is conveniently located right off the highway. Ive been here twice in the past two weeks. The food has been good both times, its the service that is lacking. The wait staff seems to busy to take time on their tables. They can not multitask. They dont have any personality whatsoever. If it wasnt for the bread, and the awesome smoked ricotta and mazzorela fritters, i would not return. After a dreadful lunch experience here with my husband a few weeks ago I posted a negative review which NYAJ management immediately took action on. I was sent a gift certificate which I saved for a weekly lunch date with my son. We usually enjoy lunch together at my home, but this time we used the gift card and had a delightful meal experience from start to finish. Our server Ashley was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. She made sure our iced tea glasses were kept filled throughout our lunch - plain for my son, raspberry for me. He enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich served with crispy sweet potato fries and I had the Cobb salad with buttermilk ranch dressing Instead of blue cheese, since there was already ample blue cheese in the salad. We both enjoyed our entrees- generous servings that left us sated. Ashley had no knowledge that we were dining mostly on comp, so I know her stellar service was simply her genuine way of treating customers. Business goes where invited and stays where it is welcome. We've been here many times, but this will have been our last. Food is usually good to very good. Service is usually a bit iffy. Tends to get busy on Friday nights, so we've left a few times when told the wait was 30 or even 45 minutes. Today I called ahead and they took my name down, which apparently does not good at all. When we arrived we were told there were two ahead of us so it wouldn't be too long. We waited for 30 minutes as party after party were seated. At the 20 minute mark we asked if it would be much longer. They said we were next. We weren't. Another party was called ahead of us. I counted at least four parties seated before us, maybe 5. I get it, you are busy, just tell us we are fifth or sixth in line and we will go somewhere else. Then when we were seated it took forever to get our food. More than an hour after we got there, we had only drinks and bread. Our daughter was getting tired and cranky by this point. She didn't end up eating much. The worst part was we ordered very simple food. Two salads, a soup, chicken fingers and roasted vegetables. No reason it should take half an hour to serve that, except of course the kitchen just couldn't keep up. read more

My last visit I only gave 4 stars because while everything was very good there were a couple of things "off", including under-baked bread. Went back the other night, and everything was perfect. It's really unfortunate that I have to give this one star, but I'm done with this restaurant. I used to be a fan of their food, but I won't be going back anytime soon. I ordered to-go last week with a co-worker and split a buffalo chicken pizza. It's usually a great order, but this one it tasted like the dough had been sitting out over night, dry, stale and cracked. The cheese looked like it was put on after the pizza had been in the oven. I called up politely explained the sub-par meal, and the manager was very respectful even offered to send me a gift card for my trouble. So, today used that gift card to order again to go, and got the meatloaf. Looked nothing like an actual meatloaf, as part of it was brown, and the other half white like a piece of chicken. It was dry, and not worth finishing. My co-worker got chicken parmesan and she was not impressed either. So, that's it done with Joe's unfortunately. Their bread and dipping sauce still kicks ass, but its about the only thing Joe's has going for it these days. read more

Put in the orders other people came in were waited on we just waited. Blamed it on kitchen. Came back 10 minutes later out of one of the skewers ok no big deal. 10 minutes later we are out of the bloody mix you picked. 35 minutes no drink and then told can't even make the cocktail. My husband ordered the Cuban Sandwich - it had a thick slab of dry, leathery pork and 1 thin slice of ham - no sauce, no pickles, and completely cold; I could assemble a better Cuban from a dumpster. I had the buffalo chicken pizza - the crust was so soggy it was more like a wet rag - they had poured so much of the buffalo sauce on it that it was inedible. Stopped In for lunch with a friend today and after looking over the menu ordered the Chicken Parm with spaghetti squash which the waitress told me was delicious but was coming off the menu soon. A few minutes later she came back and apologetically told me that it was off the menu and asked what would be my second choice. Oh well. After looking at the menu again I ordered the Chicken Mona Lisa salad which was delicious! The waitress came back after a while and said that the kitchen felt badly that I didn't get what I originally wanted so they were making it and it would be ready for me when I was leaving . We've been regular customers of this NYAJ for 5 years - food and service has always been hit and miss. Last night we revisited after long hiatus - mostly because if my daughter and father being Celiac and the care this restaurant takes in handling and serving GF food. This visited no exception. The manager always delivers the GF entrees and the food is prepared in a separate pet of the kitchen, as it should be for any restaurant who claims they are sensitive to allergies. In addition, the manager on duty last night was one we remembered from earlier visits - I cannot remember her name but she is the primary reason we initially became loyal to this location. She remembered us from 4 years ago and when one of our party (of 9) had asked for a steak knife, and she forgot to bring it quickly, she bought his desert for him! It was a very nice gesture even if unnecessary. It was a Very welcome surprise to see her return ! If the food was just a bit more inventive, the execution more consistent, and the waitstaff and less turnover, this would be 5 stars all day long - again, mostly due to the management. I would give more than five stars if I could. I hosted a family gathering on Sunday noon and everything was amazing. Arrangements were made in advance with Heather Ryall and she could not have been more accommodating! We created a menu with choice of starters and entrees and she then printed and laminated a souvenir copy for each guest. At the luncheon we were treated like honored guests by the exceptional wait staff - Gerry with a "G" and Cathy. Food was fantastic and affordable! I ordered a burger from the specials menu and it wasn't bad, but it didn't have any depth to it that I was expecting. The general manager was very responsive, accommodating, and their head chef offered fantastic menu and prep suggestions. I've been to the Not Your Average Joe's in Randolph before, but this was my first time in the new one that opened in Norwell/Rockland. I went here the other night to celebrate my sister's birthday. The bread was great (as usual), and the drinks were tasty. The waitress was attentive and personable. I ordered a burger, and it was a little undercooked (I ordered medium-well and it was a shade above medium-rare), and some friends ordered a goat-cheese pizza and said it was delicious. The place was PACKED (8:30 on a Saturday.) We had made a reservation, and I would reccommend that. I'd definitely go back again. read more

Good attentive bartenders who also knew quite a bit about the wine selection they had which is always nice to see. I had the glazed salmon and it was pretty good. Not Your Average Joe's is a great option in the Norwell/Hanover/Rockland area providing contemporary casual dining. Yet, from the second you walk in the front door and take in the eclectic decor, you have to wonder if you're in the right place. Some patrons are dressed in jeans and t-shirts while others are much more dressed up. It feels like NYAJ is trying to be something it's just not. Boasting an impressive drink menu with specialty martinis and drinks (watermelon sangria, anyone), NYAJ really lacks where it comes to variety. While I'm not looking for a menu as expansive as something like, say, the Cheesecake Factory ... having more than just a centerfold of dinner options would be nice. I think what really turns me off to NYAJ is how more than just a few of their entrees are pan-seared. If you're trying to eat healthy, this is definitely NOT the place for you. Between that and an addictive bread basket placed in front of you with olive oil and parmesan cheese, it's hard to make healthy choices. The salad entrees are typically served as a protein on one side of the plate and a side-salad-sized lump of lettuce on the other with the dressing drizzled on the edge of the plates. The only reason why I order salads at restaurants is because I am too lazy to make them at home. "Some assembly required" should only be necessary at places like Ikea... We aren't dealing with gourmet seasons and ingredients, and I find the food just to be "ehhh..." For what it lacks where it comes to the quality and variety of food, the service here is second to none. The staff is extremely professional and management is frequently around the dining room helping servers, running food, and bussing tables. While the food does nothing to stimulate my taste buds, I can enjoy a good meal here with impeccable service. With a very successful theatre nearby (Company Theatre - check them out if you haven't!), it is highly recommended you show up early on weekends or make a reservation. FOOD: 2 stars. Despite the name, NYAJ's was average at best. The place was busy and there were a few groups waiting for a table when we arrived at 7:30pm on a Saturday. We arrived ten minutes late for our reservation but, to our surprise, the table was held and we didn't have to wait. Plus one for NYAJ! We were escorted to the dining area on the left. I don't recall much of the dining area as the place really didn't have much energy/decor/character. We started with the nachos and then I had the backyard burger with bacon and the boy had the sirloin tips. As the name suggests, the "not your average nachos" consisted of an oddly stacked circular pile of tortilla chips with an overflowing heap of sour cream. Perhaps NYAJ should stick to what works and what diners expect (we eat with our eyes after all)! The burger? The chef cooked it until it was dead and then cooked it some more. It was drier than the Sahara Desert and had absolutely zero flavor. The fries that accompanied the burger were quite dark in color and based on the burger, I suspect fried twice or too long. That said, the boy said the sirloin tips with mash and green beans were good. I recommend heading to the 99 next door before settling for NYAJ's, might save you a few bucks for the same quality. read more

To Go Order. Dinner for three. The food overall was decent, except that most of it was undercooked. Every vegetable was undercooked, my GF had to put her asparagus in the microwave just to soften it a lil, I crunched my way through green beans (they did taste very fresh though). The To Go desk was a little in disarray. Took them a considerable time to make sure everything was in the bag, they ended up giving a side dish to the previous person and I had to wait for another to be made (I am a patient person but thought it should be mentioned). GF got a pork dish. She thought it looked a little too pink in the middle, I convinced her it wasn't, but had 911 on speed dial just in case. I do not know if we will be back with other more consistently good options in the area. If they can't get veg right, be wary of the other things. I shall update if we do decide to return. read more
