My coworkers and I came here for a farewell lunch on a Thursday afternoon. It wasn't too busy yet, we didn't call for a reservation even though we had at least 10 people. But they were very accommodating and were able to seat us right away and took great care of our party. The food was as expected at a Not Your Average Joes. I absolutely love their burgers here, although during this visit my coworker and I both opted for a lunch item the Pecan-Sage Pesto Salmon. And I'm so glad I did! The salmon was cooked perfectly and was over Brussels sprouts and a chipotle sweet potato mash. The sweet potato mash was delicious and I loved the pesto and flavors over the salmon. Our waitress (I wish I remembered her name) was great. She brought out the bread ASAP and she seemed very attentive, there were no complaints at all. She remember exactly what everyone got even when she handed out everyone's bill. I am giving this a review 5 stars because there was really nothing I could pick on during our visit. I really like this place. I've been coming and ordering take out from the Waltham location for a few years now. There's been definite improvement in some areas - especially the take out. The restaurant itself is nice and clean and they have a nice outside patio, too. The prices have increases though, which I don't like. I like their food, though it's a bit on a plain side. However, they broke my heart recently when they took my favorite sandwich -- The Tuscan Chicken-- off the menu. I'd never been so betrayed in my entire life, but I think the fact that I got addicted to the lemon aioli they put in it has something to do with it. They did replace it with a Chicken Caprese sandwich, but it's just not the same (tastes good though)... that lemon aioli was like crack to me. I even always asked for extra. I'm boycotting until they bring it back, or maybe starting a petition, maybe both. We had the opportunity to dine at NYAJ Waltham tonight during their training sessions, and we are happy to report that as usual, the food is on point. The first dinner seating was at 5:30pm, so we decided to get in at opening time and watch the excitement unfold. In comparison with the Acton location, this building blew us away. Whereas Acton is in a strip mall, this location is stand alone. Every part of the building is eye catching: from the glowing lights hanging over the high top tables in the bar area to the aqua colored cloth high backed booths in the middle of the restaurant, it's beautifully decorated and thoroughly modern. (Hopefully a makeover is due for Acton?) Our waitress Alexa could not have been friendlier or more attentive. From the moment we sat down there were multiple waitstaff attending to our every need, including the servers filling water glasses and the various servers delivering food to the tables. Because it was training night, you could tell that everyone was on high alert, and it was nice to know that good service was something everyone was striving for. We began with steak egg rolls for an appetizer and ordered a couple of beverages. The draft beer was cold and fresh, and the sangria had plenty of fruit. While waiting for our appetizer, the highlight of our evening arrived... THE FOCCACCIA! I literally starved myself today so I could enjoy the bread and olive oil with garlic, grated cheese and pepper flakes. It never disappoints. When the steak rolls arrived they were hot and delicious. Knowing there would be more deliciousness coming with our entrees, we saved half our app and took the rest home. We ordered Vietnamese salmon and Korean bbq pork tenderloin for our entrees. I ordered the pork as the chef recommended, medium rare (much to my husband's dismay, as he needs to cook pork until it's gray and shoe leatherish.) When the entrees arrived, in a timely fashion I might add, the smell of the fresh dill on the salmon was overwhelming, and we took half of the dill off. Otherwise, delicious and cooked perfectly. The pork came with kimchi cucumbers which were amazing, and a vinegary watermelon garnish which was too strong. Aside from that, the pork and noodles underneath were to die for. After wrapping our leftovers, we were told a strawberry shortcake was on its way. Here lies the only hiccup in the night because we waited about 15 minutes for it to arrive. In retrospect, the delay actually gave our bellies a much-needed rest between courses. And, like everything else, dessert was beyond delicious. We are excited to have another local choice for NYAJ and we look forward to dining here again once they officially open. read more

Stopped in with a seating of five on a early evening and requested outside seating. We were promptly accommodated and given a very nice table on the sunny side of the building. Perfect! Gentle breeze and a nice house Cab, friends, nothing better. Everyone ordered something different and I wanted a salad and stuck with the house garden salad. Wow. Great.. way more than I expected. Fresh, crisp and tasty seasoned dressing on the side. Pair that with the flavorful bread and olive oil and you will be hard pressed to finish everything. Some dishes were fine, others were overly sparse, and some were outright disgusting. * "Dinner portion" of nachos were served on a bread plate (and tasted industrial at best). *The chicken that was added to my daughter's salad was waterlogged and tasted like like it came straight of of the can. * The guy next to me had a burger that was absurdly small and rubbery (I've had better frozen microwave burgers from Costco or my kid's little league baseball park). * I ordered the seared tuna on cucumbers which was surprisingly fine. But here is the kicker.... while many of us would have been fine to chalk this restaurant up as a "loss" and simply we never go back (and not leave negative feedback), the MANAGER came by our table to throw some salt on our wounds and stir the pot. The waitress must have overheard us joking and laughing about some of the dishes, so that's why the MANAGER decided to visit our table. He specifically came to talk to my buddy who had the awful burger; and the manager comically proceeds to go on the attack and try to defend the awful burger (which was great entertainment to watch transpire). Bottom line, I would not go out of my way to write a negative review if it were not for the fact that an overly incompetent manager escalated a a situation with confrontation- more specifically, confrontation with having to have the last word. I really want to like this place, but a few things pull me away from anything but a 3 star rating. We came in on a not-busy Monday night, and we were seated right away. Our waiter (Adam) came over immediately and was friendly, responsive, and fabulous throughout the entire meal. The worst part? Ordering a burger medium and having it coming out completely rare and with soggy french fries. The best part? The bread that was placed on the table at the beginning. We asked for a brunch menu and first were told briskly that "we have eggs Benedict" and then 10 min later someone brought us the actual brunch menu. I was impressed that their selection has expanded in recent years and they now include gluten free menu which was perfect for my niece. My mother and I went in yesterday to take a look. We are planning her 90th birthday party and thought this would be a great place to have her party! We walked in and looked to the left and saw the perfect spot! It was away from the main area, and was exactly what we were looking for. Then we were greeted by such a kind young man. He was wonderful, and genuinely excited for us. Even if he wasn't, he did the right thing and pretended! Went here on Friday night with friends. I had a reservation since I was not sure how busy they would be on the St. Patrick's day weekend. Reached the place and were seated in 5 minutes. The decor is really hip and industrial. It's a huge place with a good sized bar. Our server introduced herself and got us waters while we were looking at the menu. We ordered the drinks and the Bruschetta and onion rings. They gave us complimentary bread with garlic and cheese oil which was yum. The appetizers were good too. Somehow they took really long; like almost after 20 mins. We got the food before the drinks and somehow couldn't track our server. We had to flag the manager down to check on the drinks. The beers that my friends ordered were really good. I was unlucky in my Raspberry Mojito coz it tasted like cough syrup. It was BAD! We got the margherita pizza and veggie burger. My friends got the fish, jambalaya and some sandwich. The pizza was Ok and the sides were too dry with no sauce so I had to throw it. The veggie burger patty was just Average. I think I have had better flavored burgers at other places. Overall, our experience was just Average. Although our server was warm and friendly, the service was slow considering it was not busy. I saw an outside area with overhead cool lights that I assume they use for outdoor service when the weather is nice. I sat down at the bar and was greeted by such a nice bartender. She was super helpful with my questions about the entrees and the beers. She exuded a warmness and was very pleasant. I just loved the natural light through the giant windows as I sat at the bar and the decor and bar itself were modern and upscale. I ordered the grilled salmon and mashed potatoes and everything was perfect. The beer was also delicious (she even let me taste test two of them). This branch may be the best of the NYAJ chain. I have eaten at many of them, including the nearby branches in Acton, Arlington, Burlington, Lexington (now closed) and Watertown. And, the menus are consistently good. I really appreciate that everything was from scratch. As a gluten free person, I really like how they adjust and take care of you. I'm glad I waited till my second visit to review this Average Joes. Usually I wait for the second visit or pretty forgiving in the first review. As expected this place is busy and usually will be always on the weekend. Waltham deserves an area with a few restaurants and ample parking and along with the restaurant across the lot (Jake and Joes) they must have spoke to each other and coordinate outdoor decor because it's spot on! There are outdoor pits or hear to eat outside, modernized, and very pretty or romantic whether on a date or watching the game. Inside is also very modern, good seating area for that long wait! The first time we went the hostessing situation was a little confusing, but the second time it was quick and efficient and we were greeted properly. Both times we went the staff and food was spot on as we expected from Not Your Average Joes. What shined above the rest was our waiter the second time there. Mario! He was so charming, always had a smile, and the most important thing was his natural connection with the heart which not everyone has. I was there with two other friends and we had connected for the first time in weeks after our house burned down. We had lost everything, and was meeting for dinner to see how we were coping and rebuilding, and just supporting one another. Throughout dinner Marion came to check on us and ask how things were along with some witty comments and great humor. I had been talking a lot and was very slow in finishing my meal which prompted him to ask if it was "guy trouble" lol... We shared why we were there and while most folks would not know the exact words to say, it's expected not to, but Mario was as empathic, funny, and sweet as he consistently was throughout the dinner. He told us he was treating us to dessert on him and we were surprised and thought it was the most touching thing ever. At the end of the meal he had come by to check on our dessert and at the end told us he took care of our check. While it's been hard with the experience we've been through...we've all internalized and dealt with the incident in our own way tonight we came together and shed tears. It's been amazing the level of support and heart connections we've been given and Mario is one of those special angels that the world should be greatful to have still providing faith and proof that love exists in all ways. Generally not a fan of any chains but I've always liked this one. I grew up going to the Watertown location fairly regularly. They went downhill and after one particular experience I just can't go back. Needless to say I was excited for this location to open and I've been twice since. Both times we went off hours so it wasn't too busy but still had a good amount of people. It's probably the nicest NYAJ I've been to. Nice decor inside and out. The service just like with any chain is meh. Nothing horrible happened just nothing extraordinary. Our server last night told us she was new (although it was pretty obvious). She was very nice just clearly inexperienced. Anyhoo food and drinks were good. The Watermelon-Cucumber Margarita was outta this world - especially for $7.99! I had the Grilled Chicken Caprese which is new to the menu and pretty good, not great. Could have used a few more tomatoes but otherwise it was fresh and flavorful. The bread has changed over the years. It's not as fresh and rustic, no caramelized onions but given I work at Fiorella's I refuse to complain about free bread. I'm sure I'll visit NYAJ again soon. I thought this place was great! If I lived here I would be a regular as there are many yummy things to try on the menu. I was in town for business and ate there 3 times during the week. They start you off with this amazing cheese & spice dipping olive oil & bread. The dipping oil is like liquid crack!!! Seriously, it's amaze-balls! The first time I went was for lunch. I had the Cob Salad, it was the traditional version and nicely portioned. The second visit(carry out) I had the Veggie Burger- super YUM, full o'flavor and not your boring ole black bean burger. I also had the Clam Chowder and that was major dissappointment. Very bland, the consistency of runny wallpaper paste and I honestly don't think there was a single clam in it. As a carryout, the whole meal was packaged nicely for easy transport. Final visit was for dinner and I had the Rosemary Scallops. Pretty on the plate, I would have liked a little more of the orange chipotle glaze as I really didn't taste it until I got to the last scallop. I started with a tiny wedge salad, the horseradish dressing was a different twist but I liked it. The staff is very friendly and attentive from the moment you walk in. Earlier in the week I had an impromptu conversation with one of the managers about the Rosemary Scallops. He said it was one of his favorites. THREE days later he noticed I was seated at a corner table eating scallops. He came over and picked up our conversation right where we left off from 3 days ago! Tonight we arrived a bit early which turned out to be a wise decision as we didn't have to wait to be seated. The atmosphere and decor of the restaurant is pleasant and relaxing. Our booth is spacious and perfect for our active children. I ordered the pork shank which was tender and enough for two, though a bit light and uninspiring on the flavor front. My husband had the steak frites which was decent in general but needed a sauce. Perhaps a béarnaise sauce to counter the dryness of the steak? Our children had Kids' Mac n Cheese which were generously portioned. Previously, I have had the jambalaya and the chicken piccata. Similar to the dishes We had tonight, they were good, but not unforgettably great. Overall, I'd sum up the food as reliable comfort food that won't offend anyone. I do think they have a decent cocktail and non-alcoholic drink menu that's not overly pricey. And the cocktails are rather delightful for a chain restaurant! What's worth mentioning is their superb service. People who waited on us have always been polite, efficient and quick to respond. This combined with the pleasant atmosphere somehow seemed to make the not so memorable food less important. Food quality has gone down hill since this place opened. Usually when I'm out with my family, the food sparks an instant dopamine rush upon arrival. Not the case here. My roommate suggested NYAJ's one night, and I was pretty shocked by how close it was to campus. My first visit wasn't as great as my other visits, but it got better my second and third visit. My first visit, my roommate was raving about the bread. I had high hopes for this bread, but it was mediocre this time around. We ordered the thai chicken lettuce wrap as an appetizer while we looked over the menu. A lot of the entrees here have an asian twist which I'm not complaining, I just thought it was interesting. My friend recommended ordering the chicken enchiIladas, so I ordered the chicken enchilladas, they weren't my favorite. I was like man, this place wasn't as amazing as she said it would be... My second visit, I went with one of my friends who was home for spring break! This time around it was WAAAAAY better. The bread was warm and toasty and amazing. I ordered the not your average meatloaf. I've never had meatloaf before so I wasn't sure what to expect... but it was delicious. Our waitress was so nice, and I wished I could remember her name. My friend got a burger, and I got to say they are very generous with their fries on the side. This is a nice new NYAJ in Waltham. I like the interior, tall ceilings and open kitchen. Went here for lunch and it wasn't very crowded. Have they changed the bread? It doesn't taste or look the same. The dipping sauce is still super tasty with the olive oil, cheese and hots.
