We've been coming here somewhat regularly for the last 4 years. Friendly staff. Attentive. Decent food. We aren't a big group or demanding in any way. Just 2 adults and a well behaved kid. An easy table for most. Tonight we came and received good service from a server named Gabriel. Except when the bill came, I noticed the total was a bit high. I checked closer and Gabriel had included an automatic gratuity of 20% on our bill. I was a little put off considering we weren't a large or demanding table, but servers deserve tips, so I made no issue of it. That is, until Gabriel ran the card and returned with the final check to be signed. Conveniently, the itemized check with the 20% tip line item was no where to be found. Instead, all he gave was a receipt with a total and a big blank gratuity line. I signed the bill and circled the total with a note that a 20% gratuity had been included already. Then I went up to the counter and asked for the itemized receipt. The woman behind the counter was kind enough, but then I asked when they had changed their policy about including mandatory gratuity. Her eyes grew wide and she lowered her gaze as she shook her head and mumbled about how it was not policy, but it was done by our waiter. Gabriel quickly hurried over when he saw this and asked what was wrong, to which I told him he forgot my itemized receipt with the final bill. His eyes grew wide too and he started fumbling through excuses while at the same time claiming he had actually given it. Needless to say, it was glaringly obvious what he was up to as I pointed out the included gratuity note on my final bill. The most disturbing part of the whole exchange was the fact that other workers around him all seemed to understand what was happening. All with the same guilty look as they listened to me calmly talk about the "error". The shift manager beside him printed an itemized receipt for me and Gabriel asked if I would like for him to remove the tip. I told him to keep it and went on my way. So, for anyone who wants to eat here. Be warned. If they think they can get away with it, they may try to trick you into double tipping. They also appear to be charging more for entrees than the price they have in their menus. Almost every item we had was price between $2 to $4 more than what they had in their menu. Needless to say, while this has been our go-to spot for the last 4 years for a casual italian dinner, we will no longer be coming here. Real pity. read more

We've been here twice now. First time was great! We both had the bolognese and it was excellent! Service was good, nice experience. We went again and it was the opposite. The carbonara was the worst we've ever had. It's supposed to be creamy, the velvety sauce should coated the pasta. We received the pasta sitting in a bowl of watery sauce. It was absolutely terrible. Also got the rosemary chicken, and mixed veggies. The chicken was so dry it was like eating shoe leather. It needed some kind of sauce to make it moist. The veggies were good. We also ordered the calamari which was excellent. We were hungry and had an appt. so didn't complain this time, although we did mention it to the server, who said he would tell the kitchen staff. Always looking for new places to meet friends with good food and outdoor seating. My friend suggested Novo Cafe and I checked out the menu on Yelp. It had outdoor seating and the menu looked good. We met at 4:30 pm so it wasn't too crowded and at that hour they offer table service which was nice. The out side patio was fairly big with tables set appropriately apart and they had the portable heaters already fired up. Yay! Because I get cold as soon as the sun goes down during the winter months:) Our server was Chase who was very attentive, polite and friendly. He told us that Novo had been there for 9 years! Me, I thought it had only been there for 4 years. We ordered a Pizza Margherita and Penne with a sausage & mushrooms in a spicy vodka sauce. DELICIOUS!!! Prices were moderate and the portions were the perfect sharing size. We even had left overs. We were able to sit and visit without being pushed out which I always appreciate. By 6:00 pm I noticed the early dinner crowd gathering so we decided to give up our table so people didn't have to wait. I also wanted Chase to get more tips. He was so sweet and professional. Plenty of street parking is available and they offer pick up/take out. Employees followed COVID regulations and were masked the entire time. I can't wait to go back for a coffee and pastry. LOCATION - On a corner, down Riverside Dr. about a block or two away from Warner Bros. Studios. It doesn't seem to have it's own parking lot so you'll need to park in the front or in the residential area (2 hour limit). FOOD - I ordered the Penne Mare and my friend ordered the Fettuccine with Salmon. The food itself was nicely flavored and creamy. The salmon was well cooked but I will say that the dish itself included a lot of garlic and red onion. A little too much for my liking. Overall, the food was good! SERVICE - Upon entering, the staff was unwelcoming. Very stagnant service as if we were a bother. What I didn't like most of all, was that the board of specials said the plate I ordered was $19 but our totals came out to much more than we expected. We check the receipt and they included an $8 gratuity tip automatically! We were not told of this nor did we feel the service deserved that. My family and I had a really nice dinner here a couple days ago. The entire restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, with really warm staff and decor. Two of us had pastas, but the Drunken Sea Black Squid Ink Pasta was the best, super flavorful and filled with delicious seafood. The Chilean sea Bass was moist and tender, but the roasted potatoes that come on the side was not really amazing, they didn't have much taste at all. I will say that I'm biased and do not enjoy that particular form of potato, as I find it to be the most dense and least flavorful. The tiramisu was sweet, delightful, and everything I love in my favorite dessert. All in all, definitely recommend coming here, it's a great experience. read more

It has been over 6 years since I've first come here, and this place is still as good as it was before. I got here around 7pm on a Friday and it was pretty busy. All of the outdoor seating was taken, but there were a few open tables inside. Although they were busy, I was impressed by the waitress we had. It seemed like she was running all over the place and still managed to be as attentive as possible, which I appreciated. My table decided to share fried calamari and the burrata pizza. I ordered the pesto with spaghetti and chicken. The food came out within ten minutes and was delicious. The fried calamari had nice seasoning and the pizza dough was soft and fluffy. I went to Novo Cafe with my friends on the way to the airport at the end of my Hollywood weekend. Parking was easy. It's an "order at the counter and we'll bring it to you" restaurant experience. We ate on the covered patio. I ordered an above-average cheese pizza and my friends ordered sandwiches. The gelato left a bit to be desired. The spumoni had some tiny frozen crystals and it was too soft. The three flavors were blended into each other. What I got was very chocolate-heavy; there was little cherry and pistachio. This suggests there is an issue with their freezer OR it's just a bit old. The flavor was fine, but the texture was off. My friend ordered an Italian nonna cake. It was fine, but very much a custard and I don't care for that much. The other friend ordered a cannoli that was large and tasty--she was generous enough to share a slice. So: Leave the spumoni. Take the cannoli. While I have had better pizza, I have no specific complaints. It's been 5 days now and I can't even recall the pizza clearly, so... Nothing went to plan today with the crazy traffic coming all the way from southern Utah. We decided to cancel our plans and stop at a random little café for dinner.. we found this cafe and we were instantly amazed by the amazing service from Kenzie our waitress,, she gave us an amazing recommendation on the caprice salad with buratta and the Under the Sea pasta and even let us share both plates together and served us separately. she was amazing and she deserves a raise. I went today to celebrate my daughter's 21birthday. Food was good, however the server was not. They charger us a cutting cake fee, that was never mentioned when she made the reservation. Anyhow we received our food we ate. It was time to cut the cake server comes with the cake and everything we take pictures. You can see very clearly in the pictures we took you can see a peach envelope so it's hard for it to miss that envelope is lost. We are not happy with the way. When it came, we soon realized that it was only enough for two, so we ordered a second one. Although it was good, it was not a typical Caesar salad. It had a vinaigrette dressing and cherry tomatoes. Oscar, the server, was GREAT! Over the years, we've walked many times past the Novo Cafe on our way to another restaurant across the street. Upon learning the wait at our target restaurant (which does not accept reservations) was 30+ minutes, we decided to pass on our first choice Mexican food and give Italian Novo Cafe a try. We're happy we did. Not only were our ravioli and lasagna entrees authentic and tasty, but our server, Oscar, was top notch. Oscar had perfect timing and anticipated our every need. It has been a long while since I have been in the San Fernando Valley, my other home away from home. Although, its just an hour away from Orange County from the congestion of the Southern California Roads, it can seem like a whole day to get there. My wife and I were coming back to visit a local theme park to experience Halloween, but with every special visit has to have a new place to eat at. Earlier this year, my Yelp Reviews were about Mexican/Spanish Food. The later part of 2021 is Italian Food. We found a cute and very ACCOMODATING restaurant named Novo Cafe in Burbank. Located NOT TOO FAR from the Warner Bros Tower at the southwest corner of West Riverside Drive and North Kenwood St., you will find Novo Cafe. I'm not sure how long Novo Cafe has resided here, but I can see this building once being a Accounting Firm or local Legal Office. When you drive by, there is really not an existing parking lot. It is mainly street parking lot with residences on Kenwood St. If you come in during the weekend, there is plenty of parking on the next street over at Screenland Drive. As we walked up, the patio ambiance alone describes Novo's atmosphere: Open and Carefree. You have the bushes/plants blocking the view inside but you are able to view the streets and still have cool, relaxing dining experience. The interior was very elegant and hustling. Its like a mix of a coffee shop and a deli at the same time. The one thing that caught my attention is the pastries in the glass case. OMG!!! There was one dessert that caught my attention and I knew I was getting it before I left. We checked in and had reservations. Our Host, Alberto, was our guy from beginning to end. He made sure where we wanted to sit and if we are OK. Very Cool Host to have and throughout our and many other experiences, he did a great job! We got a corner table and we had the whole interior dining to ourselves. Alberto got our drink orders: My wife ordered a Lemonade and I ordered a Diet Coke ($3 each). The Lunch Menu alone was very satisfying and I don't know if they have a dinner menu, but if they do, we'll be coming back. Novo offers a wide variety from salads, pastas, seafood, panini, and pizza. They go cater to gluten free/vegan options as well. A Big PLUS PLUS!! My wife saw something she wanted, but had concerns. Alberto addressed it and put my wife at ease. My wife wanted the Pesto Pasta with Orecchiette ($18) with shrimp (+$4.50). My wife's concern was the Pine or Almond Nuts. Alberto said it was grinded very heavily and its more of a flavor than actually eating it. As for me, I ordered the Tuna Salad Panini ($14) on their house bread. I wasn't done ordering...I ordered something that I haven't had in a while: CANNOLI!! ($7) This was a complete meal right here. The wait for our meal was about 10-12 minutes as they prepare each meal on the spot and it looks like from the conversations with the host and chef, they made sure each meal had a specific customization. Alberto brought us some complimentary bread while we waited for our main entrees. When he did bring it to us, it was an absolute delight. Our food looked amazing. Even my wife was amazed on her Pesto Pasta. PICTURES FIRST before we eat! My Tuna Salad Panini was very simple. It had a little side salad and the panini had tuna, lettuce, and slices of cucumber. It was very delicious and healthy at the same time. The in-house bread was crunchy and definitely held in place. I was worried my tuna would fall out. With my wife's pesto, I had to dip in some of my sandwich in the sauce. WOW...I loved it!! To end our meal, Alberto brought out the CANNOLI!! It was beautifully present on a place with powdered sugar and chocolate sauce drizzled. I really don't deserve this, but I must eat it! It's so crisp and flaky. When you get to the Ricotta, pure heaven in your mouth. I attack one side and the other without breaking the Cannoli. What a special visit to Novo Cafe, from our host to the chef to our food, this was a great first visit. My wife loved that they were able to customize/address her food issues. I loved their food in general. With Hollywood literally behind them, they are probably a busy place to have lunch even with a superstar. Now, I feel like an A-Lister dining at Novo Cafe. I am SO GLAD my friend recommended this place to me; it's my favorite Italian place in this area hands down. The one downside is parking since there's so many apartments/restaurants in this area...I always have to circle at least 3 times and usually park further away. My go to dish has been the "Pink Marre" it's salmon with penne and a pink sauce (I usually get it with spaghetti because I like to twirl my pasta!) I've gotten this twice and it has never failed me. Great flavors, comes out hot, and the salmon is definitely not dry. My friends have gotten their pizza and from the 4 that they've tried, they were in heaven with all of them. I also got their vegan banana bread and I couldn't tell it was vegan...it was moist, flavorful, warm! It can get crowded for lunch (the only time I've been), the outdoor seating is the most popular. Friends arrived and our table was ready. Had a great dinner (I had the lasagna) with Theresa sticking with us and even giving the toddler (also the birthday boy) a cannoli. I had dinner here last night for the first time and was really pleased with the service and the food. I found some precious reviews confusing with mixed opinions so I figured I'd add mine! We were greeted by a friendly, lovely server who brought some bread. (Initial bread wasn't great, I'd skip next time. If it was served warm it would be better.) I asked several menu questions she was happy to answer. We settled on the lobster ravioli and the mixed seafood plate. Both were very good. My friend also got a small salad that was served first that was a generous portion and looked fresh and yummy. The lobster ravioli were creamy and also looked good. The mixed seafood plate looked like it was gonna be bland but it was really good! It was very salty though - I woke up thirsty the next morning! It was grilled calamari, shrimp and salmon all served next to plain kale. I felt like it was a healthier dish to get and I was really happy with how they cooked the seafood. We didn't get desert but they had many good looking options. It felt comfortable and cozy inside and they also have a very cute outdoor patio with lights. I give it 3 1/2 stars for the food. The meatballs and pizza was very good however the spaghetti bolognese and lobster raviolis were terrible! The reason for the two stars is our bill was about 650dollars for six people. We had no wine and some cocktails. The next day my husband couldn't believe the price so he looked really close at the bill. On the itemized receipt it had an 89 dollar tip added after the total for a party of six which did not show up on the credit card receipt so my husband gave her another 100 dollar tip . So our tip was close to 200 on a 450 dollar meal! I think our servers name was Jeanine and We believe she did it on purpose because she came running into the parking to get the signed receipt which we took by accident and never mentioned us double tipping. She never told us she added twenty percent for a party of six! How slippery and underhanded was she. The manager was really nice to return our extra 100 dollar tip and admitted she should have told us it was added. This place deserves the extra star. I've found myself asking to come here every time I'm in town visiting my friends. The pasta dishes are so good! I've already tried quite a few of them and you can't go wrong with any of them. This restaurant is focused on folks within the film industry so it's really easy to get a solid meal with semi-quick service. It's kinda up to you how long you dine since you order at the counter and they deliver to you. You need to come here more than once and explore their menu. Los Angeles residents should consider adding the job title of, "Tour Guide" to our resumes because we are all experts at wrangling our out-of-state buddies around to the City of Angels hot spots. This also tends to entail a dinner (our treat) that impresses the tourist-friends in some way or another (whether food, ambiance or both). Well, wouldn't you like it if the tables turned and the tourists offered to treat YOU as guests?! That's precisely how lucky I was when my friend and his daughter were in from Louisiana. Score! He told me he craved Italian but affordable which, in LA, is difficult on both counts. Luckily, Novo Cafe saved the day... Novo Cafe is the textbook definition of a 'hidden gem' but NOT because of location as it is smack center on Riverside between the Pass and Hollywood Way intersections close to the Warner Bros studio lot. However, it IS one of those restaurants you drive by countless times and expect a mediocre experience due to the street-facing store-front. Well my friends, cast your judgements aside because you will be missing out. BIG TIME. Novo Cafe is a traditional Italian eatery serving up the usual dishes (pizzas, pastas, meat and seafood entrees) alongside a bakery and coffee bar in true Italiano-style. You can opt for indoor or outdoor seating but I greatly encourage outdoor seating with its Cali meets European vibe that is charming, quiet and garden-esque. Even the Yelp and personal business website doesn't do it justice: it is MUCH better in person. Novo Cafe is all about the energy and it is simply incredible: friendly and casual but somehow romantic and sophisticated without any pretense. I arrived to my friend and his daughter already seated in the patio area and was immediately greeted by Chase ("like the bank" - this is how he introduced himself as though that qualifier was necessary haha). Ordering a glass of Pinot Grigio; I browsed the menu where, bluntly, everything sounded great. Novo Cafe gets point for catering to folks suffering from Celiac such as myself; and having gluten-free options for all the pastas and pizzas (but boo to GF being a steep $3 extra!). For our meals, my friend ordered the Pollo a la California (a daily special in the vein of a chicken in cream sauce with avocado) while his daughter (being 16 and not that adventurous) ordered the Bolognese (certified angus beef slow cooked in Italian tomato sauce, with red wine and thinly chopped celery, carrots and onions - $19) while I went with the Shrimp Diavola with a side of steamed broccoli (Grilled Shrimps with chipotle and brandy pink sauce with Italian spices - $26). The food arrived super fast with glorious plating design carrying the simple but beautiful stylistic approach of minimalism in vivid colors and design. Everything looked delectable and farm-fresh. Our tummies were equally satisfied as my friend adored the Pollo a la California and I can attest with the bite I had that the chicken was tender, the sauce was on point and the avocado brought it home. His daughter's Bolognese was a HUGE portion with her loving the pasta except for the carrots which she thought were unnecessary and made the dish too sweet (her father agreed). My Shrimp Diavola was excellent: the shrimps were medium-sized and perfect in texture, the sauce was spicy but not overtaking the dish and even the broccoli was al dente with garlic spices. I could eat a bowl of that Broccoli! My only complaint is that it was a small portion for $26 and needed something else... maybe another side of sorts. The food at Novo Cafe is truly delicious. I have to give an extra-special shout-out to Chase. He is a damn good waiter dripping with jokes, charisma, cuisine knowledge, top-tier manners and customer service; capped off with an adorable smile and lovely eyes. I like to think that he and I had a little something special (can someone reading this please hook me up with Chase?!) ; but I think he is just this great with all his guests. Plus, we hogged his table for over three hours even after long-finishing our meals and he never pressured us so that Cafe Novo could free up the table. Great job, Chase (like the bank)! The biggest annoyance in this area is that parking is tricky as the main and residential streets fill up quickly and stay that way. If you are searching for the perfect combination of great food, excellent atmosphere and perfect customer service - whether you are a tourist or a local- then Cafe Novo is the unsuspecting spot you need to try. A really nice place for dining especially at the big patio with tv screens. However, it was raining hard during my visit so I had to grab a seat inside. Went to the counter and placed an order for a Garden omelette. It was a Friday during lent season when I abstain from meat. My order was brought to my table in a timely manner. The portion was decent but honestly, I was a little disappointed with the appearance of my omelette. The bread looked dry, the omelette a bit sloppy and my greens withered. Putting aside the appearance, the omelette was actually pretty good but I wished a little more effort was put into the plating of my meal. The place was rather empty during my visit which was attributed to heavy rain. However, phone orders were continuously coming and tables were full of phone orders ready for pick up. I met up with a friend here whom I had not seen in about 16 years. I love the location near the 134 freeway side with the movie studio's being nearby and it being on Riverside Drive. I lived up from downtown Burbank for 9 years and have some fond memories of this area. The outdoor seating is ideal and covered from the sun which wasn't essential today on this beautiful cool overcast day (yes, I have a little inner Seattle within me). Their menu was loaded with options that speak to my palate. They did not have any watermelon fresca beverage made so I went with the STRAWBERRY BREEZE. It had more of a darker red color to it and tasted of strawberry fruit with tea. We were so busy catching up I could be off here, but that is what I recall. It was lightly sweet and pretty good. PESTO ORECCHIETTE PASTA with CHICKEN: -- I went with the healthier meat add-on of white meat chicken -- the pesto was creamy and a little more faint on the aromatic basil flavor I anticipated but it was clearly present -- normally pasta gets better on day two after stewing in the sauce but that was not the case here as the basil flavor was further reduced -- still a good enough rendition and I love seeing orecchiette on menus, but I would opt for something else next time since the pesto did not knock my socks off RATING = A- I really wanted to try their NONA CAKE (almond) which looked to have a creamy almond filling, but I did not see it in the case and I already had to hit Porto's to pick-up pastries after lunch.
