Saw this place on a random walk down Piedmont and we finally tried it out. We got the veggies sping rolls, the bf got the short ribs, my son got the satay appretizer and I got the red curry duck. Yuck the spring rolls were disgusting. I felt like they were not properly defrosted, major sogginess on the wrapper that didn't hit the oil and the veggies inside. My son's satay looked okay he liked them, but just looked like sad cuts of chicken. The short rib was good, I really liked the curry sauce. I think it's more for the Gram, than for substance. My duck curry was okay. I love duck so they had me at duck. The lychee though interesting it was just odd. Overall food quality was pretty subpar. Located on Piedmont. Street parking, free and metered. Pricing is pretty high on delicious sounding food, but it's just not done right. Interior was super cute and interesting with the quaint space they have. Have not had time to write a review for a little bit but felt compelled to write one for Nua Thai Kitchen. We were in the neighborhood to buy my husband's favorite cake for his birthday. My husband and I were both in the mood for some South Asia cuisine and I suggested that we go to Pla Daek. We walked up and down Piedmont Ave and was unable to locate the "temporarily closed" restaurant. Come to find Nua had taken its place. They have decent Yelp reviews and so we decided to give it a try. The dining experience was good. But what impressed us the most was the presentation, flavor and smell of the cuisine. We tried 3 things. The fragrant tapioca based mushroom dumplings (Sakoo), the crispy "tum yum" calamari and the duck larb. All three exceeded expectations in all the way that mattered! read more

The food at Nua was incredible! The restaurant is very cute and well decorated. We chatted with the waitress for a little bit and she told us more about the restaurant and the food. I would land between 3.5-4 stars. Very nice interior, clean, friendly staff. Food tasted fresh and the veggies were perfectly cooked. Love that they have gluten free and vegetarian options all clearly marked on the menu. They have vegan dishes as well. The gluten free pad see ew had a really good wok flavor, but needs a bit of work for other flavors (usually is garlic umami) in there. We were also wanting a bit of a larger portion of noodles. The red curry was very mild, I think it'll suit most people's palates. We ran out of rice very quickly. Tom yum is spicy with a stronger tomato flavor that I'm used to with this dish. Overall we enjoyed our meal and didn't have any real complaints. We heard the table next to us exclaiming how good their meal was with each new dish that came out. We had come here before, when it was a different place. All the appetizers and soup were good. My husband liked the chicken and I liked the calamari. The 2 noodle dishes were just okay. Nua Thai was still in their "soft opening" phase when The Wife and I stopped by without a reservation Saturday night, about 5:30. There were only two tables seated, but the place filled up after we arrived. I can see why. The interior is very bright and attractive, despite the narrow storefront. All the fixtures and furniture looked new. The service was friendly, but got strained as more people showed up. They couldn't keep up with bussing tables, for example. I know that restaurant labor costs are a problem now. The menu had standard fare, plus dishes that sounded more authentic and unfamiliar. We started with summer rolls, which were exceptional. They even had a piece of mango within, which I loved. They came with plenty of peanut sauce, and some other kind of watery hot sauce. We tried Sakoo, tapioca dumplings with peanut and shitake mushroom filling. It was different, and I feel like it was expertly made, but the tapioca texture was off-putting for me. The Wife ordered her regular Pad See Ew, which was excellent, every component cooked the right amount. I went with a specialty, Nua praw garlic noodles. The noodles and prawns were on separate plates. The prawns had the shells still partly on - I wasn't sure if it was intended that they be eaten that way, so I peeled them. Rather messy. Fortunately, they were well cooked and tasty, and the thick garlic noodles were also good. To wash it all down, we both got hot tea, which got to choose from a good selection. We both got our own pot. It took a while to get our check - I had to flag down the overworked (by then) waiter, but we weren't in a hurry. Some of the flavors were unfamiliar to me like I said, but it was all very well made, definitely a cut above. Looking forward to going back, especially considering the reasonable prices. read more

Came for lunch and there was plenty of seating and the tables were nicely spaced. The menu has a little bit of everything you could want and lots of selections of hot teas. The only negative is the front of house staffing. There was one person seating folks, taking orders, delivering food, clearing the tables, answering the phone, giving out the take out and taking payment. She was awesome, but it is way too much for one and caused delays in taking orders, responding to requests (like a second tea cup), etc. That said, the food was outstanding. The Crispy Veggie Spring Rolls came out hot and were tasty. The Tom Nuer Sapp comes with a custom spice level and they do not scrimp on the brisket (although I did not see any crispy shallots). The Crispy Wonton Pad Thai was a delight - and I can't believe I ate the whole thing. If not for the staffing this would have been a solid four stars. That said, I will be back as there are so many other dishes I want to try. read more

We got the chance to dine here on Nua soft opening week. The restaurant itself is very charming with emphasis on nature. The owners were super sweet and hospitable, gave us lots of recommendations. Thai style spring rolls: love the addition of avocado. The 2 sauces elevated the dish. Unlike other thai places that just gives you premade mae ploy Roti: was fresh made soft and flaky was like paratha style was soo good! Sakoo: my favorite dish in thai cuisine. Very few places in the bay area serve this dish and Nua is by far my new favorite place for it! So soft, sweet and savory. I dipped it into the thai chili sauce that came with the spring rolls. Thai style sausages: i dont like sausages much so i couldnt appreciate it as i should, but my husband loved it. Prawn with garlic noodles: this dish was amazing but i was too full by the time our entrees came so we took a bite and took the rest home. Khao soi: never had khao soi style curry befor was very unique. The noodles had a nice chew the crispy noodles on top gave it more texture. The braised beef was rich and soft reminds of porkbelly. Mango pandan sticky rice: i love pandan and i love this unique take on a classic thai dessert. I wish the sauce was a little sweeter. Overall this place blew me away, the bay area is saturated by soo many thai and vietnamese restaurants so it seems monotonous. So its very refreshing to find a place with more innovative dishes while staying true to its roots. This will be our new go to place when we're in the mood for thai food. read more

I was happy to see a new Thai restaurant open in this neighborhood that I visit often. Walking in, I was pleasantly surprised by the light, airy decor which was a nice blend of southeast Asian style and Oakland rusticness. I ended up going twice on my weekend trip, which says something about how good the food was. Easily some of the best Thai food I have had anywhere around the Bay. The first night I tried the tumeric sticky rice with moo ping (grilled pork) and duck larb. Both of the dishes were a perfect blend of authentic in flavor and ingredients without being too 'over the top' in spiciness or fish sauce as many legit Thai places can be. The larb had large, juicy pieces of duck rolled in a tasty lime/basil/chile spice mix. The next day I came back to try the sakoo which looked interesting and was something I had never seen before. It's like a savory mochi, or a big rice noodle. I'd definitely recommend trying it - it may look interesting, but it is definitely a tasty bite. I also got the khao soi with short ribs, another combination I haven't seen elsewhere but it worked very well. Come hungry if you're going to order this dish! It's rich, creamy, and spiced but you're going to want to eat every last bite of it. The owners were very kind and had some fun joking when they could tell that I was staring at every dish coming out of the kitchen waiting excitedly for mine haha. Our designated service staff was kind, attentive and responsive--in addition to other service staff who "jumped in" when they were all busy. The demand of their food was clear by the number of people already eating when I got there. The actual taste of the food was flavorful, fresh, and has quality produce--all with a homemade flair was absolutely delicious. I had coconut soup (with chicken) and side of white rice. My date had deep fried pastry filled savory potatoes and vegetables sautéed in noodles. All of it was prepared in a manner that was thoughtful, care and investment in its remarkable taste! We ordered the duck larb, khao soy (with chicken thigh), tom yum calamari, sakoo, Thai tea tiramisu, beef short rib with intention to stray a bit away from the Thai classics to taste what they had to offer, and , truthfully, they did not disappoint! The beef rib was so tender and all the dishes were packed with flavor. I love the tanginess in the calamari and duck larb and textures in the khao soy (they didn't skimp on the meat!) The tiramisu was delicious even without the given sauce! Overall, all the dishes we ordered were delicious. The service, staff and ambiance are top tier, so lovely, approachable and friendly. The noodles were missing the usual smoky wok hei flavor, and they were barely warm. I had to heat them up. My husband had the Praram and the Sticky Rice & Mango. He said the Praram was "ok, not great" and the sticky rice was different from the usual: instead of tasting like coconut, there was a different flavor that he couldn't identify. He was not a fan. So good! This is the closest I've come to the experience of eating in Thailand without buying an airline ticket. Terrible experience--twice. The food is not what it used to be. The yellow curry had absolutely no flavor, and the vegetable pad Thai had a strange aftertaste.
