* After a splendid couples massage nearby, we had a hard time deciding on dinner. Then I remembered often driving by Oak Barrel, wanting to try it. * It's a bit pricey on my budget, but as an anniversary dinner, it was worth the indulgence. Getting into the parking lot was an excursion into strange territory. Couldn't find a handicap spot, or a wheelchair accessible ramp. There are many other businesses in close proximity, but no reserved parking. I pulled up into a no-parking zone to drop off my wife, help her over the curb, then moved the car near the Bionomics place. Many folks had come for karaoke night on the "lounge" side of the Oak Barrel building. Not interested in that, or their huge wine menu. Really. * The ambience in the restaurant side was fairly romantic; dim lights, no annoying television screens. Although we were greeted at the patio/entrance by loud jazz music, there was none of that bothering us at our table. * We received an artisan bread with 3 different flavors of dipping oils. All 3 were delicious. We ordered the salmon with a salad, and a pasta with shrimp. We thought the salmon was perhaps the best we ever had... better than my own outdoor-grilled salmon. There are about 5 meat choices available, with a "build your own pasta" option. * There were lemon wedges -in- the pasta, as if it were an ingredient. While I like squeezing a little fresh lemon juice onto my green salad and pasta salad, and into my water, it would have been better to serve the lemon wedges on a side plate. read more

Indigo and I have been to Oak Barrel of Eagle several times but it's been a long time until last nights dinner. The service was excellent but slightly distracted as it was the end of the night (restaurant side). There was a slight mishap with the burger I ordered but they fixed it right away and comped dessert which wasn't necessary but much appreciated. I never send food back but really needed the burger to be well done for Indigo otherwise I would have eaten it. The waiter Cody was very apologetic, understood my concern, and handled the situation very professionally. Indigo ate half of my burger, all of the veggies; and half of the blueberry bread pudding. She also enjoyed my lemonade and I had to order a separate one for me. We really enjoyed our dinner but may not return. A yelp friend has made an excellent point. The majority of seating in the dining area is raised booths. People with disabilities, persons in wheelchairs, and individuals with bad knees physically can't sit in these chairs. There is a segregated room with standard height seating and two tables by the hostess station for that "seated at the kids table at thanksgiving" feel. This isn't right and I hope the owner/ manager may consider an upgrade. I recommend their Bananas Fosters, Guinness Cake, and Blueberry Bread pudding. Welcome addition to the 'neighborhood', Oak Barrel of Eagle opened this evening in the location previously occupied by Cylos and Winding Creek Grill. New owners have created a restaurant on one side and lounge on the other both of which are family friendly until 9p when 'no minors' kicks in for the lounge. Owners have over a decade of food experience running the catering business Oak Barrel Boise, eager-to-get-it-right wait staff and a kitchen focus on fresh ingredients. It was a good enough out-of-the-gate opening night dinner. With inevitable tuning up needed by any new kitchen and wait staff as it finds its' groove, enough hiccups to start for 3 stars but with potential for more in future. MENU & PRICES: Same menu served in both restaurant and bar. Options for all eaters. The menu is designed to encourage folks to come for a libation and small plate or a full meal or just dessert. Choices range from starters, several shareable and in half or full sizes that could be assembled into a "grazing" meal, to soup, salads, burgers and sandwiches to full entrees that include things like Idaho trout, steak and a goat cheese vegetarian dish. The menu also offers a dozen-ish sides of veggies and starches with selections including roasted asparagus, mac n cheese, mushroom risotto or potatoes. Half a dozen desserts, all made in house. In any new place there will be menu changes the kitchen will make based on diner response and I imagine that will be so here for several items. We shared three starters, two sides, a Bananas Foster-esque dessert and a pot of French Press coffee. Large portions meant we had a take away bag that included the remainder of our lamb meatballs, Spanish tapas plate, prosciutto and spinach flatbread, risotto and Brussels sprouts for meals at home. Dinner menu prices range from $8ish to $28ish. Our total bill with items above plus one glass of wine was around $55 GRACIOUS HOSTS & BUT A MISS ON 'ALL ARE WELCOME' VIBE: On unadvertised soft opening night, they were doing a brisk business with people of all ages. An 'all people are welcome here' vibe is something my husband and I enjoy. But in the remodel they made a major error in eliminating standard height seating in the dining room itself where new seating is now high tables or step up booths. This prevents equal access by people with mobility disabilities . There are two tables of standard height near the bar. A separate, shut off "Chef's Room" at back also has standard height tables and owner said disabled people could sit in there. But that segregates out this 11% population from equal access to the main dining room. A separate room is not equal access. Think of the Veteran who uses a wheelchair being directed away from the main room where others gather to be segregated in a separate space because of his or her disability minority status. Tilt. This is a big error on their part. SERVICE: The young staff were all eager to make their guests welcome. Some of them were likely new to the table service 'gig' but had an innate interest in hospitality (a key factor in hiring wait staff and kudos to the owners for knowing how to identify that) and the "we're glad you came" welcome modeled by the owners. Our server, Andrew, (he of million dollar dimples) was delightful. There were some hiccups in the kitchen getting food to table. The lounge staff seemed swamped. Not unexpected on opening night when systems and processes are still being choreographed but seemed more than usual here. Everyone involved remained cool and collected. Part of the fun of opening night, for us at least, is getting a chance to participate in the unexpected. THIS n THAT: 1) PARKING: Private lot. 2) HOURS: 7 days / lunch and dinner. 3) ACCESSIBILITY: Level in at doors. Most lounge seating is high stools. A few spots of standard height at far end. Main dining has no standard tables. Two standard height tables at bar. Patio seating is accessible. 4)MUSIC: Live music bands performing in evenings on several nights and you can find a schedule on the web site. This is our favorite spot for date night. We have always had excellent service through the years. The menu isn't extensive but always satisfies our tastes. My wife loves the rack of lamb and I love the Orange Roughy. Everything we've had has been great though. The atmosphere is relaxed and intimate. The outdoor patio is awesome and faces East. Let me start by saying the food was fabulous. The salmon was very fresh, the blue cheese on the salad was very good, the mushroom risotto was very creamy and delicious. I had the house Chardonnay and it was quite good as well. The server left a lot to be desired. First, she forgot our water and I got my wine before I got my water. My husband never was asked if he wanted a refill on his iced tea. She took our order and after she left another server at the next table was describing the specials and the soup of the day. I assumed there were no specials since she didn't mention them. We were never offered salt and pepper for the salads and after another table received their salads they were offered salt and pepper. Before she brought the check, she asked if we would like dessert. I said I wanted the bananas foster. Next thing I know, she's bringing the check, and no dessert. Also, her mask hung below her nose the entire time. We walked to the front and asked to speak to the manager. We told her about our experience and how disappointed we were. She kind of shook everything off and even laughed about all of our issues. She said, "Oh, she says she has trouble keeping her mask up" and laughed again. Oak Barrel is one restaurant we keep coming to over and over. It's consistently good overall. Great hamburgers. Great fries. Decent charcuterie board. Great wine. My salad was good except the portion of filet on top was mouse-sized. The clam chowder was not as good as last time. Our teenage son was totally bummed about the 3 cheese grilled sandwich. Our little boy loved his meal (served with very tasty apple slices: thank you!) The iced tea was completely flavorless and blah (easy fix, c'mon!). Food is excellent! Couldn't be any better. We always enjoy the servers and the food .. that's why we go there. My issue when we went to lunch is there is NO health distancing, masks, table moved far apart, silverware wrapped in their normal napkins, or watching health protocol, from the public's perspective. We did see one bottle of hand sanitizer by the front desk that seemed to be pure alcohol, along with a very small packet of wipes. There was no social distancing. We were all shocked as restaurants in Boise have had a much different protocol since this whole Covid started. We will wait to go back, which is too bad as we used to enjoy it. We just discovered a hidden gem in Eagle! Their menu has a good assortment of sandwiches or pasta, and burgers. They offer an excellent varity of wines, also. I had the pasta Carbonara and it was delicious. I have also tried their appetizer meatballs. They were very good, but be advised that their sweet and sour sauce is full of red pepper flakes, so they are spicy! This is the third time we've eaten at Oak Barrel, and our experiences have been consistent: good food, blah atmosphere, s-l-o-w service. We were there today with another couple and had a lot to chat about, and even so, we eventually noticed that our food was taking ages to come out. I wish I had timed, so I could give an accurate measure, but we waited long enough to have our server refill drinks twice. There were two other tables seated in the whole restaurant at the time. The food is pretty good, but is it worth waiting ages for? Probably not for us ever again. ETA: I appreciate the owner's desire to follow up and to defend the slow service, but it is consistently slow, and it was bad enough on Saturday that we asked our server if something was causing delays, something I don't believe we've ever done before while eating out, because I have a ton of respect for servers. I'm always amused when business owners attempt to defend slow service with, "we cook from scratch, so..." That assumes a lot about your customer. Either the kitchen needs more staff, or they're screwing around in back of the house on a slow afternoon. Sorry. My review stands. read more

I chose this restaurant for my birthday. The wharf chowder is sooooo good and I love rack of lamb. Others at my table had the salmon, chimichurri steak, and shrimp scampi. Everyone enjoyed and they even comped my dessert. This was our second visit and we will be back! read more

Tonight was my first time trying out Oak Barrel in Eagle. I have to say the food was mediocre at best. I ordered a quinoa salad, which came with a choice of two vegetables. I chose the brussels sprouts and carrots. First there was only about 2 tablespoons of quinoa on a bit of lettuce with a Soso vinaigrette, and on the side of the plate where my vegetables, large portions, but over cooked mushy carrots, and bland, flavorless Brussel sprouts, which normally I love it was as if They just pulled someone off the street and said cook these. they also brought a side of bread with three dipping oils and vinegars. The dips were tasty, but the bread was weird come on sourdough or French nothing else unless it's freshly baked.. this bread tasted freshly defrosted. My husband ordered a cheeseburger which he said was tasty but the menu stated it was 8 ounces and I had a hard time believing it was even 4. The french fries, however, were absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. The service was fine. The staff was pleasant but nothing about my dinner would encourage me to ever give the oak barrel a second try . Too bad I'm still on the lookout for a good restaurant in Eagle. read more

We were coming through Eagle and looking for a place to have dinner. The menu and reviews looked good, so we stopped in. The restaurant is off the beaten path (almost hidden) but it is a really lovely place to eat. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, but unpretentious. We went on a chilly Sunday evening after 7pm, and no one was there. After we were seated, another party sat down, but it was otherwise quiet. Based on another review, we ordered the meatballs as a starter, and they were really delicious. Definitely recommend. Two of us ordered sandwiches (lamb and Cuban) and they were both very tasty, while another ordered the elk with fettuccini. The portions are generous but not too much. Both dessert items we tried were very good -- the Guinness cake and the blueberry bread pudding -- but the hit was the coffee, as they serve it French-press style. I've been here twice, the second time under protest. The drinks were not good. The food was so so, if you don't mind 1/2" thick New York steak. I brought my son and his girlfriend. He looked up at me when his food arrived to see my reaction and then said, "Good, I thought it was just me." He lightly lifted his steak in disbelief. Thankfully, the filet that was on my steak salad was good and was medium rare like I had ordered. We understand the staff shortage and were patient. The waitress had a bad attitude the whole time. I would definitely recommend the food. The drinks were not amazing. For a fine dining atmosphere, seeing commercial sweet and sour mix in my wife's beverage, was not what I would expect (it tasted like a lime popsicle). While some may like the more is better mentality, I figure if I'm in a nice dining establishment and paying $7 for a standard local IPA, it should be presented with the same care as the food. Instead of being severed with 1-2 fingers of head for aromatic purposes, my beer was served to the brim and spilled on my feet as it was placed on our patio table. Not cool. Went about a week and a half ago for dinner with friends. Our first time trying out the new place. LOVED the music selection, decor looks great. We had caprice salad and mac and cheese for starters, very good. Rolls were yummy too. One tried the steak, very good. I had the large house salad which was very satisfying and yummy, and my friend said the chicken was pretty good. Prices seemed very fair. We had already decided what to have the next time we come. (lamb sandwich!) The only draw back was the desserts. We tried the bread pudding and I make a mean bread pudding. This one had no taste whatsoever, I'm not sure how they did that. Also the crembrulee/cheesecake combo was also tasteless. More improvement needed in the dessert department! Wine list was good enough. Maybe we'll try the cocktails next time. :) read more

My wife and I were in Eagle looking at a possible move. Wife thought it was a good place to try so went. We were the only ones there on the Sunday but nice place. Food: Got the meatballs and the first plate was cold. They quickly apologized and fixed which they came back perfect. They were very apologetic about that and the rest of the meal was on point. I had the lamb dip and hands down the best dip I've had in some time. Wife enjoyed her flatbread and to make up for issue with meatballs they gave us a free Guinness cake. It was rich and yummy. Overall would go back and would recommend to anyone especially if you like lamb and French dips. Service: Never had to ask for a refill of a drink. Wife had a couple glasses of wine and myself as I don't drink any longer focus on tea. For people looking for real brewed tea (hard to find anymore) its good. Also always had a full glass never once did I need to look for a server to refill. All in all a great spot with friendly service and good food. read more
