I would go to the Oak Bar every year at Christmas time with a few friends for our annual martini drink. The only time I will drink a Vodka Martini and the only drink I can usually have in that evening as one order gave you almost two full martini glasses of a cocktail. I would then smile, bid my farewell and leave for fear of falling off my chair. Walking into the old Oak Bar, you almost felt like a high-class escort, not that I know what that feels like, but it was dark and mysterious and just screamed covert dalliances. All that has now changed and the Oak Bar has become the Oak Long Bar + Kitchen. Still offering the best martinis in town but in surroundings that I feel happy to walk into and know I am going to have a great time. After stopping by a couple of times since it has reopened, first for wine then for tea and more recently for wine and bar bites, I can confirm that I love the new space. It combines a happening vibe but still has that elegant, classy feel to it. The space has now completely opened up both in light and space and the new Oak Long Bar at the Fairmont Copley seems to be the place to be. It still has its gorgeous high ceilings, only now you can seem them as natural light floods into the bustling, amazing people watching bar. The floors are a lovely dark shiny wood. The high windows draped in cream heavy curtains bring in an abundance of light. The soft sofas and comfy red leather chairs beg to be sat it in, and my favorites, the high back chesterfield bar stools surrounding the long bar had me walking straight towards them to sit down. They even have some that seat two if you are in the mood for being cozy. I sat alone for a while at the bar waiting for my friend and just took it all in. I ordered one of my favorite white wines; a St. Supery Sauvignon Blanc and enjoyed the sharp citrus tang of the summer wine. My friend arrived and started with a fantastic burst of summer Watermelon Margarita while I continued to enjoy my St. Supery. For bites we decided on Powder Point Oysters Rockefeller and the Oak Board. I haven't had Oysters Rockefeller in years and these were fabulous tastes of creaminess with a hint of liquorice and garlic spinach and not enough with only three. Great for tasting but for sharing as an appetizer we should have ordered two portions. The Oak Board was just overflowing with goodness. As we made our way through the cheeses and meats we had to order more and more bread, which our server was only happy to oblige. I much preferred the crusty bread than the crispbread it came with. We were having so much fun, we decided to order a bottle of the St. Supery to share and so we could continue our people watching evening. What a fun evening overall. Perhaps we should have had more food and less wine but in the end I had a blast of an evening in this rebirth of the Oak Bar. This review is for the food only. We went in for dinner, and had the misfortune of being assigned to a server who obviously didn't enjoy his job very much. This place is primarily a bar with pub food, and the quality of food is frankly terrible. My wife's steak was totally inedible, but the waiter couldn't have cared less. I mentioned it to the Front Desk Clerk (at the Fairmont Copley Hotel) when checking out the next morning, and he insisted on removing the charge from our hotel bill, so props to the hotel. Breakfast, on the other hand, was standard breakfast fare with decent service. (It was not enough to raise the rating for the absolutely horrendous dinner experience from one star, however.) read more

Please understand that Oak room is ALWAYS my last stop of the night, so my opinions are formed while "under the influence" --which could cloud judgment! I love the Oak room. I love its classic, ostentatious "all our books are leather-bound" vibe. The prices match the decadent atmosphere, but you go for the atmosphere. I always sit at the bar, where you will absolutely get the best service. I've heard people complain about bad service at the tables, but you also can bask in the luxury that is the working fireplace and comfy seating options, so you just kind of have to weigh what's most important to you. Drinks are done well- I always get Manhattans here, so not sure how good the specialty cocktail list actually is. Also finally tried their food recently and the tuna tartare here is AMAZING. Loved it. Had a dash of unexpected wasabi spice mixed into the avocado that really made it special. Tried the chocolate mousse dessert too and it was heavenly and just the right size! It's served with 3 deep fried donut rounds that seriously made my year. Also have had wine here too, and the list is exceptional --- only downside is honestly the high prices - but I always go for work, so it's not really a downside in my case! I also love the hotel dog, who you oftentimes will encounter when you retreat to the restrooms down the hall. My advice is to go - at least once - and be able to say you tried it! read more

Came here with a large group of ladies for brunch. While the interior is nice, I immediately felt like the whole place was overly pretentious. The waitress was friendly but service was slow. We ordered a bunch of mimosas and it felt like over 20 minutes to get the drinks. The place was not crowded, so I'm not sure what the hold up was. A few us ordered omelets. I will say that because there was only one omelet on the menu and none of us wanted it with ham, the server was nice enough to offer a vegetarian omelet that was not listed on the menu. I opted for that. The omelet was good but I've had better for a third of the price. I had fun because of the company I was with. The food was good (although omelets are pretty simple) but overall it feels like the whole experience should live up a bit more to the high price tag. read more

Ah. This was a long time coming, and I'm glad I got the chance to live out a personal culinary dream with one of my best gals, Andrea B. On a cold, dreary Saturday night, we braved the rain (and lack of reservations) and made our way to OAK. Though we were initially told that there would be a 45m-1h wait for a dinner table, one of the hostesses helped us snag a seat in less than 15. That was impressive service! I think she could see our hearts breaking and stomachs growling, so props to her. Once seated, we looked up at the fleurs de lis on the ceilings, and drank in the cozy, dreamy ambiance -- as well as their XL $22 martinis (Ketel One, pickled olives, deliciousness). We ended up splitting a flatbread, fried green tomatoes, and lobstah rolls (served in Chinese buns), and we were GOOD. It was the perfect amount of food, the perfect mixture of savory tastes, and one of the most perfectly concocted vodka cocktails you could have hoped for... the only thing that made it better was the company, and the only thing that made it not 5 stars was our waiter who showed up maybe all of twice throughout the entire evening: once to take our order, and once to give us our check. I'm not one for hovering service, but at a classy establishment like OAK, you'd think that they would want to check in on us. We had a large selection of small dishes including the gnocchi, salt and vinegar fries, lobster, lamb meatballs, mushroom flatbread, roasted cauliflower, and clam chowder. Came here for drinks before the Boston Marathon and was simply awed by the place. The decor gives a sort of Great Gatsby/1920s feel and looks like it would be a great place for some sort of reception if you could convince them to rent the place out to you. However, as mentioned in other reviews, this place gets extremely busy on the weekends with a diverse crowd and lots of noise. If you're in the mood for that, this is a great place to party up when you're in Back Bay. read more

First visit since the renovation and I was impressed with the set up in the bar area. The dinning area was ok, but away from the action. Got a couple of burgers which were pretty good. Not the best of all time, but good enough to merit the $19 price. The reason for the 3 star rating was largely due to the terrible service. The one waiter in our section was clearly overwhelmed and we had to wait and wait and wait for everything. Empty glasses sat. Dirty dishes sat. Constantly trying to flag down the waiter is a stressful way to spend an evening at supposed high end establishment. Why not have more people on the floor? Other nits are the incredibly heavy directors chairs, awkward menu portfolio (how about simple portrait paper menus?), and slightly smaller drinks than the old Oak Bar. Oak Long Bar really has had quite the makeover. It's trendy, posh, and there really is quite a long bar! That said, we went for a family day lunch, and we were all loving it. Very comfortable tables and the service makes you feel like you are in a fine dining establishment, even at lunch. The food was good - I had the Thanksgiving Turkey sandwich with stuffing, and gravy, which was just delicious, and I could easily eat every day, or on real Thanksgiving. Outstanding! Arrived a few minutes early was seated right away...waited maybe 5 mins for a waiter. He immediately took a drink order. My dinner companion arrived a minute later and some one immediately checked on us. I had sea scallops and my companion had 1/2 chicken with roasted veggies and cauliflower. Every thing was delicious. Service was great. Had a 'Cathie's cooler'. With cucumber vodka it was excellent.. would strongly recommend if you have people coming from out of town, a date you really want to impress, or just want to take yourself to a great restaurant. When I get to Oak, the aptly named Long Bar at the Fairmont Hotel in the Back Bay's Copley Plaza, I smile instinctively: the recollection of my first time here is as vivid as it is unforgettable, a storied Thursday night that brings to mind this quote from the cocktail menu's back page: "I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day. -Dean Martin Though I first came here on "Thunor's Day" and had a great time, the best nights to come in are actually Fridays and Saturdays, when its predictably classy clientele--a steady stream of refined hotel patrons and high-rollers from the nearby John Hancock Tower, Boston's tallest building--floods the place with elegant elan and tackles its bench-to-ceiling drink selection. However, on this sunny Sunday evening, I relish the quietude and treat myself to one Algonquin Spice, which the erudite bartender tells me is "a famous 90 year-old Prohibition-era drink named after the beautiful Algonquin Hotel in New York". He's tended the bar here for two years, has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of booze, and tells me the Franklin Hotel was built in 1912 (the same year, I learn, that Fenway Park rose and The Titanic sank). Where do I start? If you're from out of town looking to spend some money on a nice dinner, look elsewhere. We ordered the Brussels sprouts, merguez lamb meatballs and the $22 burger. The lamb meatballs were good, however the burger was only ok thanks to the thick bacon on it and it's wayyy overpriced. The brussel sprouts were unacceptably under cooked. Charred on one side but still mostly raw with an overly sweet sauce that had no spicy balance from the chili flake. We mention it to the manager who apparently passed the sprout issue on to the chef. He eventually came out and apologized with dessert on the house, and OMG were they bad. I know I'm complaining about free desserts but the Boston cream pie and apple tart were awful. The ice cream on the apple tart tasted like old Breyers and the Boston cream looked/tasted like it was made last week. read more

Went here for Valentine's Day and it was delicious. The staff were very friendly, our waiter was attentive and not overbearing. We were not rushed out at all, which is nice on a holiday. In the past we have been scooted out of places, I like to take my time and enjoy my company and food. I had the beet salad, which was good. Beets were prepared nicely and I liked the pistachios, which was a different touch than I've had before. I ordered the grilled rohan duck. It was cooked really well, and the flavor of the mushroom sauce with it and the fresh herbs was wonderful. I didn't get the dumplings, I asked for some extra vegetables, and was given fresh baby bok choy and it soaked up the flavor of the sauce and added some nice texture. Oh, and the skin on the duck, so so crispy. Yum! 4 stars because it was so noisy, and had TV's on. I would love a nice restaurant with no televisions.. if someone out there reads this, know of any? My martini was good. I like how they serve them here, they bring extra vodka in a glass on ice, so you can pour yourself another. I wish the blue cheese stuffed olives were the big ones though. Can't have everything! I liked it, but probably won't be back, as I have liked other restaurants better, but it's worth a go if you've never been. I absolutely HATED the service here!! Decor is beautiful but what's a beautiful face without any personality?! It's just a facade. Been here twice, and both times it was the same lousy service. The staff wasn't attentive at all and pretty much ignored us when we came in the first time for literally 20min before we just decided to leave. I decided to give it another chance and came back a couple months ago and experienced the same ordeal. The host took awhile to greet us when we walked in the door. It wasn't busy but apparently it looked like she was too occupied with texting on her phone before 5min passed and then acknowledged us. She then sat us down and we had an older, short guy wait on us. Once I told my server that we were just having drinks I felt like his whole mentality shifted and didn't seemed like he cared after that. Didn't come back to refill the water and had made eye contact with me multiple times and didn't check on us. We had enough once again and had to basically flag him down after an hour just to ask for the check! I went to Oak Bar last night with a good friend and we had a nice time but I wasn't "wowed" by anything besides the physical space. Let's start with the decor - wow, beautiful! Soaring ceilings with moldings, cut crystal chandeliers etc and adorable slip covered wing back chairs. BUT I can't eat and drink the beautiful furniture so let's talk about the gnosh! We just had a couple pickies, a pizza with a spicy meat and tomato which had a great spicy kick to it but overall wasn't super exciting. We also got a spicy cauliflower starter, which again was nice with a kick to it but it had another flavor I couldn't exactly put my finger on, almost like curry, that I didn't love. It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't order it again. Drinks - My friend got a tequila drink which she enjoyed and then a glass of prosecco, it came out in a small idnviidual bottle which I didn't think was super normal for a "higher end" establishment but whatever it was fine according to her. I had a vodka drink with citrus and jalepeno. It was made super well but it wasn't my favorite -- my fault though, I was trying to be adventerous, if this is your kind of thing, you'll like it. Then I got a Hendricks last word which was made well and was tasty. Service - We had a couple different bartenders assisting us through the nice and all were great. Really helpful, nice and offered suggestions. 5 stars for service! I truly think that Oak would fall somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for me. Five stars for the grand old room- quite a beautiful setting. Service was good except for the dour maitre-d' on Christmas Day, who barked "name!" at me at the entrance, while the hostess was busy and distracted. They had a $70 prix-fixe 3-course special that day: appetizers were beets or butternut squash soup, the latter of which was luscious and delicious, while the beets were well-prepared albeit unexciting. Main courses were steak or turkey, both of which were massive portions but completely standard in taste, although it's possible that was the idea- comfort food for businesspeople missing home..? Dessert was buche-de-noel, described by the hubby as "grocery store cake"! Sweet and cloying and not much else. Definitely not worth the $$. The cocktails were totally disastrous at $15 a pop- the bartender overdid the bitters in mine, and they just did not seem to know how to make good cocktails in spite of expensive ingredients. I had to order a glass of red wine to salvage the meal, something I usually try not to do in restaurants. Ambience and setting was great, everything else was a huge mistake. This place is very expensive. My wife (who wasn't drinking) and another couple came here one night two weeks ago. We had six drinks among the three of us and two tapas style appetizers and it set us back $180! We had no dedicated wait staff during our dining time there, only 4 or 5 different waiters or waitresses that came in 15 minute intervals. One of the drinks I got was a vodka martini and they kept additional vodka on ice in a small glass carafe. I also requested the dressing on the side and I guess the server forgot to mention that to the kitchen. No big deal, right? The food is not that good anymore and this is like the fifth time I've eaten here so I don't think it's just the Oak's chef having a bad day. Went to the oak room twice this past month. Once was busy and another time it was not and with 2 seperate servers we had horrible service. We waited 45 min for our drinks and apps and when our food came it was sub par. When we complained not much was done. We were all appalled at the service and no longer recommend this place. So, we come here as a tradition for Christmas. A few of us colleagues real estate agents that work in Brookline and Boston. We have really liked our bartenders over the years; attentive and very sweet. Not today. Horrible service, no attention and we asked to see the manager 3x and he totally ignored ignored us. We finally did see the manager and he said sorry but we were not comped for anything surprisingly. We will not go again and have decided to do our tradition at the Bristol Lounge. Too bad.
