Visited Bend for a combined business and pleasure get away. Found Okawa online and decided to give them a try. It was my wife's birthday and sushi was the choice. We were pleasantly surprised at not only the service, the quality took us for a major surprise. We had gotten used to more rice than stuffing and more rice than raw fish. Okawa has it right. The flavors of fresh fish come through so that you hardly notice any rice at all. The last night we were in Bend was a no brainer as to where we were to have dinner. I was there to teach a class at the beauty college and ended up staying over night because we got out so late. We ended up here for dinner. I wasn't to sure what to expect. We had an amazing time!! The last place we went to try was OKAWA steak house and Sushi in Bend. The $25 steak was so awful not one person at my table ate it. It was so tough and chewy. The rest of the meal was ok. The service was also not good.When you have yo get up from your table to get a refill because you have been waiting for 20 minutes and when I told him about the steak he didnt even apoligize or try to fix it. Had a bit of a rough start but now that all the kinks have been worked out we would highly recommend Okawa!!! It's so nice to have a hibachi restaurant in Bend again! Of course it's so fun to have the cooking, show, and fun in front of you and the restaurant is set up really well with booth/tables on one side, sushi bar in the back, and the hibachi tables on the other side. It's great for birthdays or celebrations especially with large groups. The food is really good as is the sushi as well. The service is also really good- everyone is super nice and helpful. My husband took me here for my birthday and I was glad we did. It was a Thursday evening about 6:30 and were seated at a hibachi table we 4 others. Our server was quick with our drinks and she took our orders fast. The cook was amazing and he really put on a show. He was entertaining and he energetic. OK I've gone here three times now everybody in Bend seems to love this place. Granted it is very good OK very is a stretch for bend it is very good. This the town having absolutely some of the worst Asian food choices in America this place is good. But in a major West Coast city this restaurant would never survive. I ordered my food online around 5:45 and didn't get the food until 7:20. The online app said it would be ready at 6:01. Everybody waiting in the lobby had also been waiting for well over an hour. I got a text that my food was ready, and it was ten minutes before they brought me a bill to pay, and at least 20 minutes before I even got the food. We could see a chef working with his mask off as well, and yelling while he made the food (so there's a good chance his COVID germs are in all of the hibachi made tonight). They comped parts of some of the other people orders due to the long wait, but not a single part of ours was comped. We won't be returning, and I suggest you do the same. read more

Best Japanese food in Bend! Delicious food, served with flair at affordable prices. As a successful small chain in the San Diego area, Okawa is a welcome addition to Bend's restaurant scene. Those familiar with the showy Benihana experience will really enjoy the pyrotechnics at the teppanyaki grill tables... and at much more affordable prices. My wife and I are seasoned travelers throughout Asia and I lived in Japan for several years, so we know a bit about quality Asian food. Okawa is top drawer. There are many sushi bars in Bend -- some are good, some are not, and most are overpriced. Okawa offers some of the freshest and most authentically prepared dishes found in Central Oregon (much of the fish is flown in directly). The all Japanese sushi chefs are superb and the teppanyaki chefs really know how to put on a show. We have eaten here many times and have brought several out-of-town guests -- much to their amazement and delight. Okawa serves the real thing. If you're one of the many food neurotics who seek trendy gluten-free kale & tofu rolls served with kombucha & organic eel farts, this is not your place. However, if top quality authentic Japanese food nicely served at very attractive prices is your thing, you'll love Okawa. Highly recommended. read more

We recently visited Okawa Steak House to celebrate my dad's birthday. It did not disappoint! We had a 6pm reservation and were seated promptly around one of the multiple hibachi grills. One side of the restaurant has grills and the other has tables if you don't necessarily want the show with dinner. There is also a small bar with eight or so stools and a TV in the back. There are enough chairs for up to eight people around each grill with plenty of room for your plates and glasses. The server comes around and takes drink and dinner orders followed by "hibachi soup" and a small salad. The hibachi soup was basically just broth with a couple of tiny pieces of green onion and mushroom slices. Not much substance, but it tasted delicious. Perfect for a cold evening. Shortly after the soup and salad, the chef comes in with a cart and all the dinner items for the whole table. After a quick greeting, he confirmed each person's order and went into a amazing performance of spatula and fork juggling that made me feel sorry for his mom since he had to have been born with those things in his little baby hands. It was a truly impressive display! Next came the Saki shots squirted into each guest's mouth from a squeeze bottle. Everyone enjoyed watching each other get a stream of very weak "saki" squirted from as much as two feet away, celebrating each victorious mouthful of unspilled liquid. This continued of and on throughout the meal. Of course, what would a Benihana-style dinner be like without a four-foot fireball? He squirted a smiley face of liquid onto the grill and ignited it with a lighter. Good times! It's also helpful for guys like me with those pesky runaway eyebrow hairs! First up on the grill was the eggs and rice which was whipped up with a fervor reminiscent of the Swedish Chef from the Muppet Show. Most of the rice stayed on the grill before being portioned and served on each guest's plate. A similar performance delivered noodles before the filet mignon, a lobster tail, shrimp, and some chicken breast went on the grill. While that was cooking, our chef chopped up some baby corn and challenged each of us to catch the pieces flipped into the air by a deft spatula pop. It was hilarious watching those things bounce off foreheads, chins, and eyeglasses as everyone tried their skill. I demonstrated my chops as a professional "eatist" and caught mine on the first try. (mic drop) Soon our various meats and seafood were served up on our plates. Each bite of the filet mignon was so tender, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. We all requested medium rare. The shrimp and lobster were both perfectly cooked as well. Beside each of our plates were two little cups with dipping sauces. One for meat and one for seafood, apparently. I tried both and don't think they really added anything to the meal as every bite was already perfectly cooked and seasoned. Maybe if they were slightly more flavorful? I'll try them again next time. Overall, the experience was entertaining and delicious! Time from start to finish was great as well. We got there just before 6pm and my credit card was swiped at 7:02pm. Okawa is a little on the pricier side of what I am used to, but the show, the laughter, and the expertly prepared meal made it worth every penny. First time going to Okawa. It was ok. They don't use real crab in the California rolls. The Bento boxes were good. Sushi not so great. The fake crab is almost a deal breaker. Red crab is not that much of a cost difference. The sushi bar had an odd odor that was a little hard to ignore. My husband had a scallop roll barely any scallops in the roll and it was dry. The ambience is in need, no music was playing, walls are bare, lights on bar are somewhat interesting. Not sure if I want to try the Habachi part. I've been to some of the best in the world Habachi tables. I don't think Okawa can match the worldly standard. This restaurant needs improvement. read more

Waitress was rude to my wife. My wife is the single nicest person you'll ever meet. She was a nurse for 30 years, and was one of the nurses people always wrote letters about how wonderful she is. She gets along with everyone. Everyone likes her. I envy how charismatic she is and how many friends she has. Never has anyone EVER in 32 years of marriage treated her badly until we met our waitress at Okawa Steak House. The young woman was just plain rude, couldn't be bothered, actually rolled her eyes at us several times. That's it for me, I'll never set foot in this place ever again. Never. Again. My husband and I were part of a group of 13 that has reservations at 7pm on Thursday evening. We were sat immediately at 7pm; however, it was 15minutes before our group was even acknowledged by a server/employee. In fact, members of our party walked over to the bar to try to grab drinks there while we waited for a server. Unfortunately, the service at the bar was just a poor. When the server did acknowledge us, he - literally - walked up, adopted a look of terror on his face, and then walked away. Literally, the server walked away....We were all completely confused...Did we scare the guy just by simply existing? Anyway, he did finally come back with a tray of waters (10minutes) - for only half the table. When he finally arrived with the waters for the rest of the table he said, "I'll be right back to get your drink order." Seriously?! We had waited over 30min for just all of the waters to arrive and this guy isn't even going to stay to at least take our drink order? Our server did finally return to take our drink order. Considering we were a table of mostly adults, many of us ordered drinks. Well, 15minutes later, ONE of the drinks arrived via our server...We all looked at each other in disbelief as our server systematically, walked back a forth from the bar with ONE drink on the tray at a time...(I can't make this stuff up!) When he arrived with the sake my husband and I ordered, it was the completely wrong sake. This mistake happened to be the only happy part of the meal as he served us a more expensive bottle, and we weren't charged for it. Now, it's been 45min. We just got our drinks (many in our party had already made multiple trips to the bar). And our server starts taking our order...WELL, halfway through the order-taking he just walks away with an, "I'll be right back." Turns out our server didn't have enough paper in his pad to complete our orders...At this point, all of our patience is lost. But, we continue to be polite folks and decide to wait it out. (Oh, and our server left all of the menus on the table. I ended up returning the menus back to the hostess.) Our group ordered a mix of hibachi and sushi meals. For those that ordered the sushi meals, complete chaos ensued. Two different servers AND the owner kept trying to serve us the same sushi roll that was not intended for our table. This mistake speaks volumes for the lack of organization and communication in the kitchen. Additionally, the sushi that was served (because, surprise, our server did not place our order correctly and some of the sushi was never delivered) was poorly made. It fell apart easily. Also, I had to go to another table to get soy sauce for our sushi. (At this point, I should've been given the 16% gratuity!) For those that ordered the hibachi items, our server forgot to deliver the included soup and provided it after the chefs had already started plating the main courses. (Also, I need to note that it had been 90min from the minute we sat down to when the chefs arrived to cook the hibachi meals.) Besides the free sake upgrade, the hibachi chefs were funny as hell. They deserve 5 stars as they seem to be the only ones with their shit together. I attest their late arrival to the incompetence of our server. To top this entire experience off, the building is clearly not ventilated well. It was so hot in there that I had to keep taking our baby outside to cool her off in fear that she would overheat. Everyone in our party was sweating - literally. It was so uncomfortable. My husband and I ended up leaving before everyone else because our child was so uncomfortable. I took the baby to the car to escape the inferno. My husband stayed behind to settle the bill. Even paying the bill was a nightmare! Firstly, my husband had to beg for to-go boxes for our barely-touched meals. Secondly, our idiot server walked back twice without swiping our card and then didn't leave a pen for him to sign. Thank god my husband keeps a pen in his pocket! The service was so terrible, the owner/manager was nowhere to be found, and the sushi chefs need more training. But the hibachi chefs were great. I cannot believe that we still paid for our meal. We will never again eat here, nor do we encourage anyone to eat here...Unless you have 3hours to waste and want to sweat off 10lbs in the process...Yelpers beware... read more

The whole dining experience was mediocre at best. I ordered the filet mignon with lobster. The entire plate was devoid of any flavor. The steak was the deciding factor in this yelp rating. The lack of ambiance, and the robotic service aside, the steak was really bland. It's new. It's fun and I would return again in a heartbeat. I do, however, recommend reservations, especially on the weekend. The first time we went, we were told it would be a 45 minute wait. Understandable. It is one of the more fun restaurants in Bend. I liked the food. It wasn't Benihana;s. It wasn't Shoji's. It deserves to be judged all on its own. The pricing was affordable. The wait staff was friendly, attentive, and timely. I have a feeling things are going to get better and better. They have a sushi bar and hibachi tables. Our chef was very funny and talented at making a big production of cutting things up. It's kid-friendly for all of you young families. Service was really slow but she was trying. I feel like the restaurant has a ton of young, inexperienced wait staff who haven't had proper training and don't know the menu. We were patient with her because she was friendly and was giving it an honest try. My husbands sushi was good but the second roll took forever to arrive at the table. I had the hibachi samurai steak plate which was not hot and quite greasy. The salad that comes with the meal is not good. Looks like they ripped open a bag of discount bag salad from one of the grocery stores. Not impressed. I think sitting at the hibachi with the chef would probably be better so we will give it one more try and make reservations next time.
