My wife and I have been coming here since their Grand Opening. It's one of three Sushi restaurants we frequent, but lately Oki has been getting most of our sushi business being close and convenient. They have seated and served us after a late night at work near closing time, even after finishing the evening clean up. They are always very welcoming. Winnie remembers us every time we dine here even when we haven't seen her in months. All our dining has always been for sushi, so we can't speak to the hibachi experience. The sushi is always fresh and consistent. The complimentary samples are a nice touch and keep things interesting. You never know what they will bring you, but chances are it will not be ordinary. Prices are fair and competitive. The restaurant and restrooms are very clean. The atmosphere is fitting and the staff has always been attentive. My only grip -Bring your eye glasses as the lighting is less than desirable. On our last visit we shared a sushi dinner deluxe for two where we choose from a selection of choices to complete the package. It's very frustrating when placing an order where you choose your options, only to struggle to read the choices because you forgot your reading glasses. All in all this is one of our local favorites. My only suggestion would be to add better lighting or table lighting that could be adjusted by patrons to their comfort level. This sushi talk is creating a craving and its getting late. Unbeatable food at the best prices! I have been coming here for over five years, and get sushi to go at LEAST once a week. I've enjoyed every meal I've ordered, and always make sure to take advantage of their specials! This week they have three amazing rolls, all significantly less pricey than surrounding sushi restaurants...and might I add, better quality. The interior of the restaurant is always clean and kept up, and the staff is so welcoming and always have great advice if you're looking to explore new food. Tonight, we received a delicious new appetizer that was fresh tuna wrapped around cucumber, with such a great sauce. It was a clean and balanced taste, and we will definitely order again! We also received soups with our dinner, and each ordered a Kani salad. For dinner, we had the maki dinner and hibachi chicken and noodles--great size portions for the price! The hibachi chicken and noodles were only $8 with soup and salad included--and it was a good sized portion so we get to enjoy leftovers! I'm a little upset upset about all the negative reviews about this place! I come here pretty often for lunch and I love the specials. Three sushi rolls with miso soup for $12 until 3:30 pm...can't go wrong. The service isn't always the friendliest but it's efficient and accurate. The sushi is tasty. Absolutely terrible experience, I will not go back. Inattentive service, cold food. We waited too long for everything including our check. We've been before and I always thought they were below average, tonight was the worst. The food was just average and I'm pretty sure we were charged more than menu prices. There are better places in town and I'll be heading there next time. UPDATE/Response: if our sever had bothered to check on us certainly we could have addressed with him. The issue was clearly with the server. Also- Unfortunately we didn't save the picture of the two at the register on their phones ignoring customers. Sub par! We have been coming here for over 3years, and the service and quality have been slowly declining. Tonight was the breaking point. Our waitress was SO VERY rude....like grabbing menus from my hand while I read off what I wanted, slapping food down on the table and walking away abruptly. Never checking on us, or the food. Oki has really good menu options...their sushi menu alone is extensive and they have good variety in each roll. They have a ton of appetizers and food from the hibachi grill as well. This is the second time I gave this place a shot after they started going down hill. I ordered the Basic Roll Party, Dynamite roll, and chicken tempura dinner. Basic rolls were tiny and sub par tasting. The Dynamite roll, which was almost $9.00 was pathetically tiny. The entire roll fit in one corner of the to go package. We stopped in dinner. The front desk lady was nice but not really welcoming. We sat and waited for a table since we wanted sushi not hibachi. The hibachi said seems to get a lot of action. When we were seated, the table was freshly wiped but was soaking wet. We asked the gentleman who seated us if he wipe it with dry cloth but he came back with small napkin. It was dry enough so we sat looked at the menu. It took a long time for some one to come to our table that we weren't sure who was serving us. When our waitress finally came, we were ready to order since we had been waiting. We ordered the dragon roll, spicy tuna roll, Mohegan sun roll, shrimp tempura roll and couple more basic rolls for three of us. One person at table ordered from the Chinese menu. Overall the food was decent, not the best but will do for quick sushi fix. The service however is an issue. Expect to wait awhile once you get to your table. Expect some confusion from the waitress. She kept on bringing us food we didn't order on our table then picking it back when she realized it was the wrong table. The hostess really needs to learn to smile. I'l start by giving the benefit of doubt about the eerie attentiveness of the waiters was likely due to us being the only customers. I've got this discomfort with people hovering close for minutes at a time watching me eat.. ANYWAY, We were welcomed and seated within a minute of entering the establishment. My boyfriend ordered fried squid to make up for some soggy calamari we ordered at an unnamed New Britain Asian restaurant. Let's just say he could barely remember the restaurant name by the end of that appetizer. All disappointing thoughts were erased. The batter used was light and crisp, it was not soggy, the squid was fresh, and the lemon and pepper seasoning topped it off nicely. That was just the beginning. I got some hot green tea on the house, then ordered Pad Thai. Small background: I order Pad Thai from different restaurants whenever I see it to compare and choose which to return to, and I will be returning to this one. I asked the waiter to request the dish be spicy from the chef. I'm glad he hinted that "spicy" could mean "mouth on fire", so I said "OK, a little spicy", and got teased by my boyfriend for sounding like a scardy cat for the rest of our dinner. The dish was nearly cooked to perfection. One thing I might of altered would be adding cashews on top or drizzling peanut oil, but the hint of spicyness was just what I hoped for, unlike a few other places I've reviewed before.. Unfortunately, I did not go photograph-crazy the way I usually do, so I can't upload how nicely plated everything was. This is anopportunity to see it for yourself. Nevertheless we were greeted with a smile and assured it was not too late for dinner (10:30 on a week day) We really appreciated the flexibility. We came here thanks to Groupon and are happy to say we loved it! The restaurant had nice decor and ambience and everyone from the hosts to the waitress to the Hibachi chefs were very courteous. We were quite impressed with the portions, which included whatever main meat or vegetable you want, plus soup, salad, fried rice, noodles, vegetables and a shrimp appetizer. I didn't find that the food had a TON of flavor in comparison to my usual favorite chain Hibachi restaurant (Benihana), but the noodles were quite good and the salmon and scallops and shrimp. We also tried the spicy tuna roll which had a good amount of spice and I liked that they had a think layer of rice around the roll (great for if youre trying to be "healthy"). I met a friend here last week to redeem my second Living Social deal. This time we sat at a table, not the sushi bar, and ordered all nigiri and maki with no sauce. We stressed NO SAUCE!!! I don't even know where to start. So my wife had woken up the morning we went, and she said to me, "we're going for hibachi tonight". I hadn't been to a hibachi since I was in 6th grade and my dad took me to Benihana. So I said yes and we spent the day debating about which place to go to. My wife then found OKI on livingsocial, so our choice was made. The 5 of us set out and arrived around 6:30pm to find a completely packed restaurant. Apparently, livingsocial is more popular than we thought. I asked when the soonest we could be accommodated was, and hostess said 8:00. So we left, let the kids ride some go-karts & came back around 8. Five minutes after walking in we were shuffled into a cramped corner around a flat-top griddle. Space was at a premium and we were super cramped, think... airplane space. I know it's the way it works, but I didn't enjoy being sat with another party. The waiter addressed us all as a group, so it felt like the service was lacking. We we brought water & other drinks after 10 minutes or so, and asked about appetizers. We ordered the Tiny Rolls($4.50) & Gyoza($4.75). Both were piping hot, presented beautifully and were tasty. Then we ordered our dinners, hibachi for all (1 Scallop & Shrimp, 2 Steak & Scallop, 1 kids steak & 1 kids shrimp). I also order an array of sushi, Dragon Roll, California Roll, Spicy Shrimp & Tuna. The waiter asked when I wanted my sushi and I told him as soon as it was ready, which apparently was right in the middle of my entree, about 1/2 hour after I ordered. The sushi was fresh & delicious, so no complaints there, but the table was full of habachi dishes & sauces at that point and the platter they brought the sushi on was HUGE, I had no place to put it. Before the chef came over to cook our dinner, the waiter informed our group (remember we were sat next to 4 other people) that the kitchen only had enough Scallops left to fulfill 2 orders, so some of us had to change our orders. I kept my mouth shut because, A) i wanted my damn scallops, B) I wanted to see what he was going to do if nobody volunteered. I'd soon learn I should have changed my order. The hibachi was a major let down. The show was ok, if you don't get offended by crude sexual humor in front of your kids, and your wife getting doused in sake like she was a $10 hooker in a Dr Dre music video. Theatrics aside, The noodles & rice were ok, minus the raw egg shell that came in contact with my cooked rice. Apparently the imported chefs do not go through food safety training here. Both my steak(ordered med-rare) & scallops were criminally overcooked. Scallops were tough and rubbery. My steak was like shoe leather and had absolutely not a trace of pink. The vegetables were the only food that benefit from the cooking methods used. Everything was covered in a teriyaki-like glaze that wasn't too appetizing. Total Damage including 2 virgin daquiri's for the kids, and 2 OKI Specials ($6/ea) for the wife was $176 incl tax & tip, which is WAYYYYYY too expensive for the quality of the food. So I was really skeptical of Oki at first, the outside seemed a little run down and after eating Sakura I just figured it wouldn't be as good. Well, boy was I wrong. The hibachi menu was reasonably priced, I got the shrimp and scallops while my boyfriend got the steak and scallops. First off, the entrees come with both rice and noodles (something you're typically charged extra for) which I was not expecting and the waitress brought us over a free tiny carafe of warm saki on the house which was delicious. My family and I came here to dinner thinking the food and service would be as great as the first time 3 months ago. Our server (Asian female) was not attentive, we had to keep asking for our beverages and all we got was a nasty look. She didn't check up on us - ask if we needed anything or if we wanted our check. We felt like we were sitting in a lecture hall - some of the patrons (specifically two blondes) were talking very loudly like they were the only ones there and we were either forced to listen to their drama or not dine there. We ordered the following: (1) Tuna Tataki, which consisted of thinly sliced seared tuna served with ponzu sauce. *There was no mentioning of Tuna Tataki being spicy. It was so hot that we had to get one plainly seared and noticed that the ponzu sauce was orange flavored. (2) Tempura California Roll *The Tempura California Roll wasn't deep fried or served warm like the last time. It was just wrapped in tempura batter and served cool. (3) Basil Noodles, which consisted of egg noodles sautéed with Thai fresh Basil and Vegetable. *This was probably our favorite dish of the night as it's consistently good every time. (4) Sashimi Deluxe *The presentation of the Sashimi Deluxe improved - it was nicely decorated in a bowl on blue colored ice. The fish was not as fresh as the previous time. My fiance and I live in Vernon and were excited that an "Asian" restaurant had opened - a reviewer mentions that there is a lack of sit-down restaurants in Vernon and this is quite true. A Groupon enabled us to try this establishment last night. The first thing we noticed as we pulled up to the parking lot was the mass of cars. It was encouraging that the lot was full and that there was a wait inside. We waited about ten minutes for a table for two. Another obvious thing was that Oki was way understaffed for a Saturday night - in fact, a handwritten sign on the front door says that they are "hirring [sic] waitstaff for the weekend". The decor is modern and doesn't scream "We're an Asian restaurant" although it has Japanese characters on one part of the wall (done tastefully). Oki has a separate hibachi room which is great because the smell of frying food lingers on clothes. When we sat down, our server asked us what we'd like to drink and came back to take our order in about five minutes saying it was busy and it might take a long time for food to come out. Being Asian, he must've thought we were Chinese because he spoke to us in Chinese (we're Korean) initially and kept pressuring us to "order now" so food would come out in time. We told him we weren't ready and he went to a different table. We were quite put off by this because he didn't seem to apply the same pressure to other tables; I don't know if he was treating us less like customers because we're Asian but it certainly seemed like it. Anyway, we were hungry so we ordered two appetizers - the salt & pepper calamari and the blackened tuna. I thought the former would be like the dish served in restaurants in Chinatown but the batter was softer and not as peppery; it was actually too salty. The blackened tuna was delicious, and the presentation was lovely. For sushi, we ordered the spicy salmon roll and the Sex on Beach roll - both were pretty good particularly the specialty roll. We were hesitant at first because of its $14.95 price tag but it came in ten hefty pieces. We also ordered House Fried Rice which was more Thai than Japanese, but still very good. Overall, the food was quite delicious except for dessert! I was quite disappointed with the green tea ice cream. At first, I was delighted that the ice cream platter came with "chocolate" sauce, whipped cream, and a maraschino cherry.... however, the ice cream barely had any green tea flavor and the sauce was very salty! It was so odd that I asked our server if the person preparing it had accidentally poured the sauce for sushi rolls over it! Our server kept insisting the sauce was meant for dessert, so I Googled it and there is a soy sauce-based sauce meant for dessert. Normally, I love sweet & salty combos but this was quite unpleasant. Next time, I'll order the ice cream without the sauce. Although our server tried to rush us the first time, we had great service. He refilled our complimentary green tea and water glasses a few times without us asking and came to check on us. We will be returning! read more

A lot of places have come and gone from this location. Maybe that was just to clear the way for OKI. Very pleasant setting, amazingly good sushi, sashimi, and nori, attractive sushi bar, restaurant, and habachi seating. The staff just couldn't be any nicer. Service was perfect, quick and efficient but not rushed. A request to bring us something of the chef's choice brought an innovative and delicious scallop roll which we thoroughly enjoyed. We were treated to a complimentary after-dinner drink of plum liquor blended with some sake, very tasty and a nice ending to a perfect meal. Usually we order basic rolls which have been fine.Their creamy dressing option for the green salad is a nice switch from the usual ginger dressing, Very nice! (Still not as good as the White salad dressing at the OLD Fuji in West Hartford; Recipe anyone?) The Indian Pancake app was a bit greasy but delicious anyway. I believe it was deep fried which was different from previous visits. They offer a hibachi party menu for 10+ guests, which includes apps + all you can drink beer/wine/sake for $25-30 pp. This is a great deal if you go with healthy drinkers like we did for my birthday :) Service is very good as long as you don't mind wrestling back a few premature dish removals. Both times I've visited, I've been given a complimentary small appetizer. Non hibachi menu items are Japanese/Chinese/Thai. I've ordered from all three categories, and all were really good. The middle-of-the-road rating is because there is nothing innovative here. The hibachi is standard fare. Sushi Sushi Oki is right down the street from us, conveniently close, and right near Vernon Diner and Reins. The inside is separated into two rooms, one for table dining and the other for hibachi. This is an awesome favor for me, I don't have to hear the singing and ringing of hibachi shows with kids screaming. The service is a little less than par, it seems that with a sushi restaurants the servers can get away with just asking "What you want to drink?" and then just smiling and filling water glasses the rest of the time. Ehh, the food made up for it. We LOVE the seaweed salad, fresh and crunchy and perfect size for sharing. The salt and pepper calamari was great too, crispy and perfectly seasoned. I love having calamari that isn't drenched in marinara sauce. For dinner we shared a couple rolls, one being a steak roll special for the night. Both were great. Perfectly sized and portioned, the steak roll seemed a bit over done, but we ate the whole thing anyway. Having shared a Scorpion Bowl made the whole dinner a bit happier. (They didn't light our 151 in the Scorpion Bowl, which was a little disappointing) The bill came to about 50 bucks, which isn't bad for sushi. We were here for Valentines Day and still had a good experience, so we keep Oki as the hometown sushi stop for when theres a craving. Eat on! read more

This is the best sushi place I have been to. The service is incredible. The staff is attentive and very kind. Johnny and Winnie were particularly lovely. We got several rolls, which were decedent and presented perfectly. Everything tasted fresh and the quality of the fish is top notch. This is a great place for college students or anyone looking for a relaxing and enjoyable dinner. The drinks were well crafted-- a great place for Uconn students to visit as its only 20 minutes from campus. I recommend Oki to anyone who loves sushi. read more

My boyfriend and I LOVE Oki, we've come between 1-2 a month for the last year. The sushi is always amazing and of good value. However, we came last night to celebrate my birthday and were very displeased with the service. The food was good, but almost thrown in our face. The worst part was when the bill came- it seemed kind of high so when I looked it over, noticed they added 20% gratuity onto it!! I grabbed a menu to check their policy and it said gratituty would be added for parties of 8 or more, but there were only 2 of us. I called the waitress over and she said that their new policy was to add it to every check. I asked for written proof because her menu said otherwise, and she said nevermind I'll take it off and laughed while she walked away! We'll see when we come back to Oki, I don't appreciate charges being sneaked into the bill and having it taken as a joke. read more

It pains me to write this review as I thought I'd be going on Yelp one day to write something positive. I started going to Oki about 3-4 times per month with my boyfriend and various friends, sometimes even more frequently than that.. We were definitely regulars there and that never faltered because the food is so good. They had undergone some disappointing staff changes that left us angry with slow, inattentive service on some visits. However, that didn't stop us from going. As I write this, I don't even remember what I used to order at Oki. I haven't gone in over a month. I ordered take out one night after a long day. I ate some of my appetizer (Thai Crab Roll) and then felt something caught in my throat that just wouldn't go away. I looked down my throat and saw a thin, inch long piece of wood sticking out of my tonsil. How could wood have gotten in my throat?! To be frank, I wasn't even given chopsticks this particular time. Every time I spoke or swallowed it hurt even more. Panicked, I drove myself to the Emergency Room for the object to be removed. Needless to say, I did not come even remotely close to finishing that meal. The garbage can was probably pretty happy, though. The following day, I called Oki and asked to speak to a manager. I wanted to let him know what happened just so as to avoid the same thing happening to someone else in the future. I was met with extreme rudeness and was told it was impossible, but he said he would talk to the chefs and get back to me. He left me a voicemail explaining there is nothing wooden in the kitchen and that the doctor and I were wrong - "It must have been chicken!" Chicken in a Thai Crab Roll? I hope not. I called back distraught and offended to assure this manager that both the doctor and I are intelligent enough to know what an inch long sliver of wood looks like.
