Menu was shockingly expensive for a casual breakfast. The meat goulash wasn't particularly warm when it came out, and the fried steak was very average, and relatively small. The saving grace of the place was the cinnamon roll as a side option, it was pretty solid. If you're trying to decide, I'd try somewhere else. I'd rather have eaten at the dennys next door. My husband picked this place for breakfast after a night at Scarywood. He said his lingonberry crepes were the best breakfast he's ever had and he isn't one for embellishing. I chose the traditional goulash with a suggested side of gravy which was also filling and delish. Oh and the peri peri sauce is a great compliment to the goulash! The daughter chose regular abelskivers and we got blueberry ones on the house. Great service and better food. We'll 1000% be back again anytime we're near. read more

My companions tried and loved the Danish abvelskevers (round waffles is a close description). The service was fast and friendly. This simply comes down to what you want to eat. If you want to eat bad food and sugar starch sugar then this is the place. I came here, trying to do a reduced carb and reduce sugar sort of meal and simply could not find any options on the menu. I get it not everyone cares. I just wish they had options for those of us who don't want their waistline to be larger than their inseam. Beyond that, our grandson enjoyed his meal, and the service was excellent. So many things I hated here. Brought my boyfriend from out of town (CA) home to meet the parents, & after she asked where we were from, the waitress launches into a speech about how awful CA is... I get it, it's Idaho, but that's just not appropriate. I was hoping at least the food would save the place, but there was not a crumb, a single MORSEL of seasoning on this food. Say what you want about CA, but at least we've discovered seasonings. Finally, I bit into the French toast, & was shocked when raw egg or dough was shot into my mouth. Absolutely foul. Let me first begin by saying the concept of this restaurant was cool- but that didn't translate into good food quality. Usually when foreign food is brought here they Americanize it here which is the way I personally prefer it but apparently they try to keep it very European like they advertise. Some might prefer it just my opinion. I went with the more "American meal" got a meal with pancakes, bacon, eggs, and sausage. They gave me fried eggs instead of scrambled which wasn't a big deal but the food was just kind of meh. Nothing special. Probably would've kept it at a 3 star if they didn't mess it up but I ordered a Cream cheese cinnamon roll which is one of the most disgusting things I've attempted to eat. Very pleased with the food and experience here. My GF and I came here for some breakfast around 10:30 and were seated within 15 minutes. Our waitress was very friendly and wasn't pressuring or trying to rush us in ordering. For beverages we ordered the fresh squeezed orange juice and the French press coffee. Both were delicious. Our food was the European breakfast and the goulash with a side of arbelskivers. For the most part the food was pretty good. I do prefer my hash browns on the crispy side but nothing to complain about. Overall we enjoyed our visit. The bill was less than $50 which to us was reasonably priced. I saw a few reviews of couples coming here and complaining about spending over $60 for breakfast and all I can think is what did y'all order? read more

Went to this restaurant this morning at 9am and it was about 25% full. Arrived before my friend and checked in at the hostess station asked how many in my party in which I replied two. Was asked where the other party was, I said she should be here any minute. I was told that they have a policy to not seat people unless the entire party is there. This makes no sense to me. I can maybe understand if it's busy or if it's a large party. Even at that it doesn't make sense. What was the harm in seating me and my party not showing up? Would they have not taken my order or served me as a single? This is a very poor business practice and had it not been for the fact that my friend travels from Spokane and me from Spirit Lake area we would have gone someplace else out of principle. However the only redeeming factor is that our waitress Elaine was wonderful and took good care of us. The food was good too. However because of this "policy" I will not return. read more

I really love this place. The service is always friendly, and the menu has many great options for breakfast. I've not tried the lunch menu, but my husband most recently got the Monte Cristo sandwich and liked it. On my most recent visit, I ordered the Scandinavian Cake Plate which included a German potato pancake (with applesauce), the buttermilk hot cakes, 3 Danish aebelskivers and a strawberry Swedish crepe. I also added the blackberry brandy syrup on the side. My favorite of the group was the Danish aebelskivers. They were very tasty with the bb syrup! My folks got the Austrian coffee which I tasted but I'm not a coffee fan. Was sweet with a foaming head on it. I always make a point to stop here when I'm in town and I don't see that changing anytime soon. read more

I had the Munich omelet which was delicious. I was also offered one of the crepes (with lingonberries) and it was amazing! My in-laws love the Austrian coffee but I opted for the French press. While it wasn't anything to write home about, it delivered the caffeine I needed. However, the kids menu (most of the entire breakfast menu) didn't offer egg free options for my daughter who has an allergy to eggs so that was disappointing. read more

Old European is very unassuming. From the outside, it's cute and Dutch, warm, and inviting. You walk in and are met with a Polish Prayer, yet another sign of warmth, compassion and care that is about to ensue. The service is top notch - warm, friendly, fast, and efficient. They keep your drinks filled, and move about with purpose. The food is off the chain. We had an Omelet Stew which was a 3 egg omelet with cheddar cheese, ham, bacon, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, green peppers, and sausage. It was light, savory, and perfectly cooked and seasoned. And then, magic happens, they set Aebelskivers in front of us. If you've never had them, I assure you is something missing in your life. These little fluffy baked puff balls filled with either sausage and havarti (savory) with maple syrup or blueberries (sweet) with a dusting of powdered sugar and real whipped cream. Holy Toledo, they are soft, pillowy, airy, and obviously made with love. These little pastries are truly Heaven Sent, completely next level. If your looking for fabulous food, service with a smile, and some contentment in your life - come to Old European. We are already planning our return visit. read more

This place is awesome! Everything is so unique and different from food you can get elsewhere. We shared a cinnamon roll for starters (we planned to take it to go for later but once we tasted it we couldn't stop eating). One of us had their version of a chicken fried steak and it was the best I ever tasted. I order the savory aebelskevers which were so delicious. They also brought us a crepe with strawberries as my breakfast was delayed and they were to die for. Oh and the iced tea was some of the best I've had. Awesome experience from the food to the staff. Old European was one of our foodie highlights to our trip to the Coeur d'Alene area. Old European can be best described as a small, funky, out of the way Scandinavian/ Danish diner. Literally, a sharp right leads to a one-way road under an overpass, leading you to wonder, "where is the GPS taking me?" But stay the course, as it is worth it. Samantha, our server, could not have been nicer. She explained things when we had questions, and it was helpful, because the menu is huge. She also was warm, and made us feel right at home. The ebelskivers were fabulous. I ordered the savory ones with sausage and havarti. They were light and fluffy, yet crisp on the outside. Samantha brought us a sample of the blueberry as well, which were delicious. I also had the crepes, and although they were not thin and crispy as a typical French crepe would be, I loved the texture and flavor of them, which was balanced by the tart mascarpone-like filling and scant sweet strawberry topping. My significant other Hungarian gulash; she reported that it was tasty, but be forewarned, you need to bring your appetite, because it is a huge portion. A possible low point was the German sausage. I got it as a side to try it and it was nothing remarkable. It wasn't bad, but not good enough to finish, given all of the other choices on the table. A definite pass is the coffee; I got a French press and then finished it up with regular drip. Both were the lightest brown water I've had at a restaurant in a decade or more. However, the specialty coffees may be better as my companion enjoyed her salted caramel latte. Concluding on a high point was the cinnamon roll. Clearly made from scratch, it had the right amount of cinnamon sugar inside, the dough was light and flaky yet substantial, and the cream cheese frosting was delicious. Family run restaurant with "old European recipes" how fun!!! Everything is fresh and takes some time but it's so worth it. Even the coffee tastes better. May I recommend the Austrian caramel or even the salted caramel. The flavored whip cream on top (with nutmeg spices) will just melt in your mouth. Our server was super friendly and very knowledgeable on the menu and products. Helped us understand just what it was we were ordering...afterall I have never had an abelskievers lol but for the record they are amazing and I will order them again. They are like balls of pancake batter stuffed with sausage and havarti cheese yuuumm! You won't want to miss out. read more

While the food is pretty good, the service is horrible. They used to have a very nice waitress there, who is blonde, and at that time there were some other nice waitresses and waiters. But as of about a year and a half ago, people that were nice left, at the staff that is there is snooty and unkind. I would recommend a Lil' Euro in Spokane Valley instead. Same great food... But a staff that makes the food more pleasant to eat. read more
