Old McDonald was recommended by some friends in Augusta. Been around since 1970s. When we arrived there was an hour long wait. They do have some goats, ducks and peacocks that you can feed or pet to pass the time away while you wait. We ordered the fried combo of catfish filet and scallops. The scallops are big. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The catfish was good as well... crispy outside and tender inside. They know how to fry seafood. We also ordered the broiled seafood platter consisting of flounder filet, oysters, shrimps and scallops. The oysters were dip in some kind of juice. Same for the shrimps. While they are good, I'll order them fried next time. Brioiled scallops were good. Together with the flounder filet were the highlight of my meal. Each person get a small bowl of grits and a basket of hush puppies to share. Per our friend, it was good southern food. Staff was friendly and food came out fast. Restaurant is rustic with a lot of vintage items hanging on the wall including a Wall of Coke! Definitely a place to try even if it's out of the way. read more

First of all, I love how this place is family owned and they have so many cute animals around the restaurant. That made the wait for food go by so fast as I was busy looking at their peacocks and goats and geese. I came on a Saturday for an early dinner and it was already packed with people. When they seat you, they give you grits and hush puppies and their grits are actually one of the best ones I've had ever. I tried their fried gator, frog legs, and catfish and all of them were perfectly fried with a crispy outside and tender inside. Good portion size and it tasted great! My family (party of 13) and I visited the OMFC last Saturday and our experience was horrible!!! First, the place supposedly opens up at 4:00PM and doesn't take reservations. We arrived at 3:45PM and the doors were already open to come in and enter your name on the reservation list. We entered our name. The lobby had some people and there was a line forming outside. After an hour and a half wait and seeing numerous people called in who, from all indications, arrived after we did, we approached the receptionist and asked "how much longer "? She didn't have an answer and stated, "not much "! I mentioned that we had been waiting an awful long time and asked would we be allowed in if we spl up our party. She stated, "no, not really". After two hours we were finally called in. This was after seeing multitudes of groups/people arrive and be called in long after we arrived!!! As we entered the dining area we noticed there were many empty tables there! Some could have been placed together to a us! Although the waitress appeared friendly and stressed, after being seated, we began to see people arrive at adjacent tables and be served before we were, although we were immediately provided with water, small bread rolls and a small bowl of grits. Our orders took a while! The catfish was somewhat dried and the overall meals were good. However, the terrible experience of the excessive waiting, seeing others allowed in before us without any rational basis and seeing some others served before us, really put an ugly damper on our family experience!!! Lastly, we are African Americans (AA) and didn't see any AA employees working at the establishment. Why not???? Our experience was tantamount to racism, discrimination, prejudicial treatment and an insensitivity to neighbors who have been in the community for generations as well as visiting relatives who were exposed to such behavior!!! It is totally unacceptable and must be stopped by the establishmen's owners!! Owners, please take action against this kind of behavior!!! Old MacDonald fish camp is always crowded! From the peacocks that greets you when you pull up to the restaurant and a nice view looking out the back while you're seated, it's a nice place to visit. Certainly not high class but has friendly service and plenty of good food. Just be aware that most things are fried, although they do have other options. read more

We had the big seafood platter. We got part of fried and part broiled or grilled to accommodate a family member with food sensitivities. The fried flounder was some of the best I've ever had! And the perch was something we don't get often where I live. The shrimp were great, too. Our server was excellent. We enjoyed the animals outside while we were waiting. Fun to feed the goats. If you're into southern soul food, fried fish, and country vibes in a family atmosphere, this is the place for you! A country restaurant on a huge plot of land on water with tons of animals to feed (almost like a petting zoo outside! great for entertaining the kids while you wait on the table). They specialize in fish, shrimp and grits, and don't sleep on those hush puppies! We ordered steamed shrimp and corn on the cob for the girls and my wife got the oysters and scallops. The scallops were buttery and cooked to perfection! After dinner, we fed the ducks and turtles, petted the goats one last time, and even had a close encounter with a very friendly peacock! The only notes I'd have is it gets a little loud inside during rush hour (probably due to the eating area being just one giant long room), and it was a little toasty inside, but I mean it was August in South Carolina so you kinda get used to the heat. And lastly, as a health conscious millennial, I wished there were more healthy options on the menu, especially in the side options. That being said, prices are decent, the service is quick and friendly, and it definitely sets a unique and cozy environment where you feel like home at Mama and Papa's house! First off the service was excellent. We had a group of 18 - all the food came out hot and the orders were right. We had fried shrimp and flounder that came with baked potato and coleslaw. The potato was cooked perfectly and the coleslaw was decent. The shrimp were over cooked so they were a bit rubbery. There are complimentary hushpuppies and grits. The hushpuppies were crispy, hot, and plentiful. The cocktail salad was pretty good. The place is pretty rustic. One of the draws for families with children I guess would be all the ducks, geese, peacocks, and goats to pet and feed. This restaurant is amazing. The food is superb..true home cooking. We ordered the fish camp special which was a seafood medley. It was fresh and extremely tasty. The location of the restaurant is so nice and peaceful. It's like a restaurant on a farm with goats, ducks, peacocks...my daughter had a great time feeding the goats while we waited for our table. Was it amazing? No. Was it terrible? No. Would I drive an hour to eat here twice? Also, no. If I happen to find myself in Edgefield for some reason I would try it again. I was a party of 1. I arrived at 7:18pm on Friday and it took an hour to be seated. They basically set everyone before me and waiting until 40 min before closing to sit me. I counted over 8 tables that checked in after me and sat down way before me, but that wasn't a big deal because I wasn't in a hurry and had the time to kill. I'm not sure if it was because they didn't want a "party of 1" taking a table, but that's how it felt. Crazy thing is I usually tip better than most 4 tops with 2 kids and I was planning to order 2 meals. The food is mediocre. I love hush puppies, but the free ones they give pre meal weren't enjoyable. One bite and didn't eat any more of them. The grits were okay, lacked flavor and seasoning, so just ordinary grits. The cat fish stew was $6.25 for about 8 ounces. It wasn't red base and it wasn't white. I give this a 6/10. There was a lot of slimy fish skin that I had to pull out, lacked seasoning, and is an odd texture. Better than my actual meal though. For the main course I ordered the seafood platter broiled. I had such high hopes but it was a 5/10. Shrimp was rubbery, no flavor, and came sitting in butter and water. Scallops were alright, probably the best part of the meal comparatively. The oysters were horrible. Like almost gagged and ruined the rest of the meal. They came out floating in water. Just oysters boiled (not broiled) in water. I tasted one tiny bite of the cat fish and I can't give an opinion on it because I was still grossed out from the oysters. I forgot to even take a picture, because the oyster did me in! I also didn't try the deviled crab. I was going to order a to-go plate for my fiancé and daughter but after tasting the food I quickly changed my mind. I paid for my $41meal plus $10 tip for one (so $51 total), took it to-go, and fed the food to my dogs after my hour drive home! The tea was good and the service was great. I'm willing to try again, but I really had high hopes for this. My fiancé and I travel all over eating at fish camps and this one is at the bottom of the list so far. read more

Old McDonald Fish Camp - so is it a farm or not is a question I still ponder after having paid a visit to this oddity of a restaurant recently. There are ducks, goats, chickens and peacocks partially contained across the property and just looking at the water surrounding the restaurant one would think the owner would be raising his own catfish onsite but then again that's a lot of work so I'm going to stay with the thought that it's all props for esthetics. We arrived on a Thursday evening and there was no waiting, the restaurant was mostly filled but with only a party of two we were seated immediately. Sweet Tea please and some of those finger shaped hush puppies, I passed on the grits since this was dinner time and unless there are shrimp laying on top of them, grits are for breakfast, just a southern opinion of mine of course, if you're giving them away I guess you can serve them anytime you like. The staff here was extremely friendly and attentive, the atmosphere is very southern and loud, I swear I could hear the conversations of all the tables surrounding ours and it seemed most of the folks eating here were locals and all seemed to know one another and they all seemed to be celebrating something, probably graduations from the looks of it I've never seen so many pressed wranglers and over-all in one place. The specials are fried and if you opt to choose something besides the special it's probably gonna be fried too unless you want sometime exotic then go for the boiled crab legs. We got the whole fried catfish and fried shrimp with coleslaw and baked potatoes.
