No. No. and No. I am a fish queen. I know great fish and what makes a great catfish dinner. Old McDonald Fish Camp was a disappointment! This is why- Taste-Our fish was tough and the texture of the flesh was very dry. I ordered the catfish small plate with coleslaw, and fries. The only thing that was edible was the hushpuppies. They had a plastic splash guard over the hushpuppies but there was nothing to cover the grits that were buffet style so any and all particles could fall in those grits-NOOOOOOO! The atmosphere is similar to that of a cafeteria on a Friday night but there are cute farm animals to see. The servers are friendly but not friendly enough to get you help when you are dissatisfied. There was also another couple sitting beside us for their date night too. They were disappointed to and still hungry like us when they left. The sad thing is that the waitress knew that we were not happy and she still took our money. She charged the other couple too. I will not go back. The server was just doing what she was encouraged to do-take the money. The service was not service I would pay for..You are better off eating fresh fish at home. The fish there is not fresh and the restaurant is only concerned about taking your money and providing a poor service and product. I do not recommend this restaurant. This place is a different experience. We had never been here before so I was a little confused what to do. Following the locals I signed in and had a seat. After about 10 minutes we were called to a table. Our waitress Taylor was really helpful with our order and was also very friendly. After taking our order she directed us to the free hush puppies and grits. I wanted to try everything, but settled on Fried Flounder, shrimp, and catfish stew. All three items were very good, but I think my eyes were bigger than my stomach. With the hush puppies and grits and my meal I was stuffed. Overall, I really enjoyed the food, staff, and experience. I would suggest getting here early. I arrived 10 minutes before opening and was not close to being the first there. Bring a few nickles and you can feed the goats while you wait. read more

I was surprised how out-of-the-way in Edgefield and in the country this place was. It has a huge parking lot. Apparently people drive from afar to come eat here for the fried catfish. I recommend making reservations. We had a party of 20 and we still had to wait 20-30 minutes once we all arrived. Otherwise, the place in the parking lot as well as a restaurant was very crowded at 6:00 pm early Thursday evening. I like that they have all you can eat hush puppies and a grits bar. The hush puppies were nicely flavored, airy and crunchy. . The grits were nice, hot and lovely texture of grits. The server girl was very friendly. She was great and handling all of our orders as well as other tables as I noticed. I ordered the all you can eat catfish with the bone in it for $18.50. It came out with five pieces of catfish. The seasoning on the catfish was nicely seasoned and lightly battered. However, I felt the catfish was over fried so, a little on the dry side. I also ordered the small combo plate with fried oysters and fried scallops. Both items were over fried but still nice tasting. I did try my friends fried shrimp and they were perfectly fried. A small combo had 12+ shrimp and 2 catfish. Just wish everything I ordered was not over fried. Over all, I would go back again and if I was not in such a large group I would have requested not to over fry the next batch of my catfish. We have dined at Old McDonald Fish Camp many times over the 40 years they have been in business. The food is great. I love fried catfish and they never disappoint. We have had everything on the menu and I recommend all of it. The staff are all amazing; friendly, courteous and hard-working. They perform exceptionally well given the number of people they serve in an evening. If you get there when they open, you will get seated pretty quickly. If you show up later, you will wait a good while for a table. Don't complain about that. (I have met people who have driven an hour or more to eat there.) That is a testament to how good of an establishment the place is and it serves as a reminder that not every part of our life should be "fast". And the atmosphere is just right for dinner in the country. I cannot write a review without mentioning the hush-puppies and grits. They are delicious and I always have to put the brakes on while eating them so I can save room for catfish. I have read some of the bad reviews that some people have written here. I believe most of them were expecting a reserved table, food that was caught that day, prepared by a french chef, and a waiter that puts a napkin in their lap. I think you took a wrong turn somewhere on your way over. They serve great, well cooked food at a great price. And they treat their customers very well. I am guessing that they serve near a thousand people a night. When you are serving that many people in that amount of time, you are gonna make a mistake here and there. If your server brings you something you don't like, be polite, and ask her to fix it. She will. And get over yourself, slow down, and enjoy life. Somehow we always end up taking out of town guests here. It is surrounded by goats, ducks, and chickens (fenced) and giant catfish which you can feed. Our friends and family from the US always love it but the French relatives were somewhat appalled. They didn't appreciate beverages in mason jars or the giant snake that decided to crawl up the window next to us during supper (a snake wrangler was dispatched as soon as the staff became aware). What seemed to bother them most was all the fried food. Most items are available broiled though. What bothered me the most is the way they ate the tarter sauce like it was a side dish. After making the trek out to meet friends, was impressed that there was probably 30 people standing outside in line to get in. The atmosphere outside was peaceful and the inside was definitely country. Friendly staff w/ a great view of the pond, ducks and geese. The food was as expected for a place that specializes in deep-fried goodness.. I ordered the combo plate with the gator, scallops and whole catfish fillet. The gator was a little tough in comparison to other that I have had.. The scallops were good. First time I have had them deep-fried. The whole catfish fillet was as good as I expected. It was not overcooked, and the accompanying tarter sauce was just right. Was surprised that for a fish place they had no lemon or fresh onion.. For those that have never had catfish in Alabama or Mississippi, they always have a fresh slice of onion w/ their catfish. One of the people w/ me had the flounder and said it was good as well. I am never a big fan of the wait staff automatically adding the tip to the bill, but exactly as stated on the menu, they added 17% because there were 7 of us at the table.. Of course there was 4 separate checks. As I typically tip 18-20%, the girl lost money from me, as I figure if you have to add it, then that is what you have decided you are worth.. I was so disappointed in Old McDonald fish camp. We drove over 30 min to get here, and were told the wait was 30 minutes. Almost 2 hours later, we finally got a table. I am not sure what all the fuss was about. Grits were mediocre at best, and the hush puppies were nothing to write home about. The waitress came to check on us maybe once? Sweet tea wasn't that sweet and fried fish wasn't anything magnificent. My husband and friend split the platter and the boiled shrimp was the worst I've ever had. Everything just tasted dry and bland and was way overpriced. If you want good seafood, go to Rhineharts. You'll be seated quicker, and the food is much better. Two stars for the goats/chicken/peacocks wandering the property because that was cool. read more

I wanted to love this place. I'm from the Deep South, and I appreciate a good fish camp. And there were certain parts I did like... From the delicious hush puppy and grits bar to the fun ambiance, but overall I was underwhelmed. When we pulled up just before the dinner rush on a Friday night, we were excited to see all the animals... So many goats and all the fish in the pond. But when you get closer, you get hit with the smell. So, so pungent. It was considerably worse than a petting zoo, and this is all along the walkway to the entrance of the restaurant. Just kind of kills your appetite. Ignoring that and pressing on, we were seated within 10 minutes which is great, but we had to wait nearly 15 minutes for a server to even come by and order water for us, which took another 5 minutes to receive. This speed (or lack thereof) was about standard the rest of the night. The food was good, I'll definitely admit that. I had the catfish and scallops and my boyfriend had a huge seafood platter. My catfish was really greasy and over fried, but his was fine. The prices are a little high in my opinion for a typical fish camp, especially considering this one just wasn't of the same quality, speed, and atmosphere. So overall I give it 3 stars because it's a charming place in North Augusta, but I think there is much room for improvement as far as cleanliness, service, and pricing. read more

Service and food is truly a southern delight. We arrived late a little past closing time but were met with a smile and "come on, we'll feed you!" It had been 14 yrs. since moving away from the area. Truly our memories did not hold up to just how delicious the food is. Everyone was happy and talking, no playing on cellphones. My faith in humanity was restored. Best part was being last to come we were sent home with some of those super creamy grits which were just as good for breakfast this morning. Country people like country things and when I ask people what they like about this place it's always "Hush Puppies & Grits Bar"! Really? My children make better grits than these guys. NOTHING is fresh. I guess if you've only eaten' frozen fried seafood in your life you don't know the difference. I had the stuffed flounder and you could tell it had been made the day before, sat in a cooler and heated up. IT LOOKED DEAD on my plastic plate! I went with my sister and her family. This place is great. The kids love feeding the peacocks, goats, ducks, and fish. The hush puppy and grits bar is included with the meal and is always excellent. I recommend the "small portion" unless you have a huge appetite. The fried shrimp are always good as well as the catfish. I recently had the broiled scallops and they were cooked perfect and had excellent flavor. I highly recommend them. The wait staff is very friendly and always keeps the glasses full. But then I walked toward the front desk to pay (i have done this in the past and never knew it was against the rules) and the blonde short woman at the front who I assume runs the place started going off about how the server should have informed me to wait at my table until she could cash me out. So I offered to go sit back down to wait on the server and she stomped off in the middle of me talking to her and rushed to get the server. Then proceeded to go off about how she was going to have a talk with the server and kept mumbling about.. then she stomped off again to the point where a man in line even told her "she was still speaking to you, ma'am". I was just saying I didn't mean to cause any trouble and I didn't mind waiting for the server to be done. For me to like this place so much and go there often that just left a bad taste in my mouth and I don't think I'll go back now. The food here is excellent. Everything was seasoned well, not too salty, not greasy. The staff was friendly and quick with the refills. Try the grits and rolls, but don't fill up on them. This place is fantastic! This restaurant sits back off into a dark road but once you get there... you really appreciate the adorable outdoor atmosphere! There is a pond with ducks that kids enjoy to feed and plenty of parking! The inside ambiance of the restaurant wasn't as "nice" as the outside but it made me feel comfortable that I wasn't in a stuffy atmosphere. The Grits and hushpuppies are free with your meal... so that's two stars right there! The grits were creamy and was cooked very well! The hushpuppies were good but I wasn't crazy about them. I love the fact that you can help yourself to as much as you want and when you want! We shared the "Fish Camp Special" and added an order of corn... It says it feeds 2-3 but easily it stuffed our party of five! We still had a few shrimps and such lagging behind! The dessert menu was short but the price for everything was such a bargain! I have been to Old McDonald's Fish Camp several times over 30 years. From what I remember, I don't think anything has changed about the place. This time we got the fish camp special. The day it feeds 2-3 people. That must be 2-3 starving because the two of us ate all we could, took home and gave another person all they wanted, and still have plenty left over. The kids loved the animals - feeding the goats and fish, as well as just the nature aspecte of it. The gator tail was prety good, as was the shrimp. What a wonderful place to eat and enjoy nature. The location and atmosphere remind me of the costal restaurants in beach locations such as charleston or hilton head. The pond gives it that feel. There are chickens, peacocks, goats, geese, ducks, gracing the place with their presence. And they are very quaint around people. The inside is like a pleasant country kitchen. Clean and humble. The staff really set it off. They go along with all the other friendly and pleasant feel. Our server Niki was patient and very helpful about our menu decision. She smiled all the way. You don't get the treatment Niki delivered at most restaurants. Most customers seemed to be regulars knowing each other and even exchanged conversation with us. It was like one big fish fry at your grand parents house. Now the food is top of the praise list. Served at proper temperature. Light flaky and seasoned well without being salty. Let's start with the good. The gator was good. As was the cole slaw. And the Coke and iced tea. Oh yeah, and the french fries. That's about it. The fried shrimp was watery and mealy. The fried oysters had more breading than oyster and it was fried hard. The fried fish was over fried and had a horrible texture. The fried scallops were 1 inch hockey pucks. Everything had the near rancid taste you get when the oil has not been changed in a long time. The only thing worth going to this farm with bad food was the waitress. She was absolutely terrific. I would rather go to the other McDonald's and get a Filet-O-fish sandwich under the golden arches. read more

They have a petting zoo! Also, all thirty goats we saw were pregnant. I don't know where the male goat was but whoever he is, he's a stud. What a great way to prove we're at the top of the food chain. Pet and feed some animals and then go eat their cousins. They have a great and diverse menu. Stuff like frog legs and gator, both of which were delicious. All of the servers looked like middle school kids, (maybe there's no schools in North Augusta I don't know) so I expected the service to be a bit lacking, but much to my surprise the waitress knew everything about the menu and aced my exam of overly pedantic questions about the food. You get unlimited grits and hush puppies with every meal, however they were both really bland and the hush puppies looked exactly like the food I was feeding the animals prior to my meal. The sweet tea was awesome and it also wasn't the typical southern sweet tea where you wonder if they put any tea in the cup of sugar. Great family atmosphere with a lively staff.
