first of all, this place has everything: a great, diverse bar offering, above average food, and, what really has got to be, the best, most accommodating wait staff I've ever had! you can get almost anything here, gourmet food, bar bites, happy hour (1$ sliders, BOGO drinks), fresh seafood (1$ raw oysters and clams on Wednesdays! When you walk inside it has that old time feeling, like it's been there forever and it's going to stay. I've always been impressed with the quality of the food I've had there, be it a dry aged steak or roasted chicken. The wine list is extensive and has a great range of wines in all prices. The wait staff is friendly and the kitchen is always willing to accommodate special requests. I went here recently with a couple of co-workers. I split the reuben sandwich with my co-worker, who had the crabcakes - we each had half of the reuben and 1 small crabcake. The crabcakes were really good, but the reuben left something to be desired. The wait staff was pretty friendly and attentive, but I'm not sure if that's because there were only about 10 people in the place. We have been here multiple times and each time it is good. Have sampled most of the menu, my only real complaint is that they tend to overcook the fish... I hate hot, well done, dry fish... Went for Sunday brunch 4/1/2012. Service was slooooow. We got there around noon and couldn't get out until 2 pm. I ordered the pork loin special sandwich w/ fries. The pork was so dry I nearly choked on it and there was no seasoning. No taste to it at all -- there was a dab of mustard but it was such a stingy dab, why bother, it was just a tease and the only flavorful thing about the sandwich. It tasted like dried out leftovers from Saturday night's pork entree. My companions ordered reubens, and found the corned beef to be very tough. None of us could finish the weird french fries. Then there is the clam chowder, which we each ordered. Very disappointing -- it wasn't bad, but nothing to get excited about and there was this underlying sweet taste to it -- sherry maybe? Whatever it was, it was not a very good note. The service was oh so slow. We managed to get coffee when we finally got waited on, but had to wait an hour to get a refill -- our waiter vanished! The chowder came quickly, but it was but a distant memory by the time our entrees arrived. Between chowder and entree, our waiter was nowhere to be seen, no progress notes, no "how are you doing?" -- nothing. We had to flag down a different waiter to get a coffee refill. A long time after we finished and our table was cleared, our waiter finally put in an appearance. We asked him for the bill. Then, 20 minutes later, we found the hostess and asked her to get us our bill. Eventually, we were able to escape. This was our first time at Old Post Tavern, and it will be our last. Pity, because the chairs are comfortable and the acoustics are good and it's a short trip from Norwalk. It was fairly busy with families -- probably because it's comfortable and a great location. Certainly not for the food! And we will never understand why it took two hours to get a bowl of soup and a sandwich. read more

This is the 2nd time we've been here in 2 years and both times were sorely disappointing. My husband ordered the cedar plank salmon done medium, and it arrived to our table raw in the middle. We asked the server to take it back to cook longer - simply not impressive considering the price of the dish. I ordered the sea scallops with a mango slaw and while the fish was decent it was an appetizers portion of food (6 small scallops, mangoes and about 1/3 cup of steaming spinach) for an entree cost! Let me start with a 3 is not a bad rating from me. It's more then half good! Ambiance has a smart yet rustic feel and the staff is very friendly. The salad i had was well balanced and executed nicely. The ravioli was a bit overpowering with a sweet and tart flavor from the dried fruit. Less would have been more. But considering the smaller portion it was still somewhat enjoyable. My date had a mussels app which was simple but very generous portion and strong fresh flavors which she loved. read more

Phenomenal establishment - the food is outstanding. I tend to get the grilled salmon and it is cooked and seasoned to perfection every time. The service is quick and very professional. The tables are always immaculately set. Parking is not great but that is one of the few downsides of downtown Fairfield. This is definitely an upscale place price-wise and quality-wise though it would be perfect if that is the nature of the occasion. Myself and four other women had dinner last night, the food was good, service was fine, coffee was warm and not fresh after I specifically asked to have it fresh brewed. After we paid our bill and were chatting a gentlemen came over and asked us if he could but us a cup of coffee at the bar because he had people waiting to be seated. I recently went to the Old Post Tavern with my GF for our anniversary. The food was excellent in our opinion, although there wasn't much of a selection. The reason it is only getting 3 stars is because I felt as though the service was lacking. I made a reservation for 6pm and arrived promptly at 6pm. However, I wasn't seated until almost 6:30pm. My GF and I aren't the oldest people out there, we are 23 & 22, and we felt as though we were not seated quickly because of our age. On top of that, we were shoved in the corner of the restaurant and it took almost 15 minutes for a waitor to come over to ask us for drinks. Overall: Excellent food, poor service. I took away 2 stars because of the service. read more

Three stars because I believe the food can be much better in the dining room. Tend to always get something I'm not crazy about. On the other hand, food at the bar and service at the bar is great. My favorite time to go here is when they have bands playing, usually get good gigs and haven't had a bad time yet when the band plays. Never got a buy back from the bar, which is a little upsetting because we spend well over 100 bucks on drinks when we go out at night, wish they would do that every once in awhile. Stay away from: linguini and clams. Had them 5 times, only once they weren't fishy. Wine, great selection of wine, but sometimes they serve wine opened the day before. Just tell them you want a new bottle if drinking by the glass. Still, overall good place to drink, and eat from the bar menu. I would raise this another star if dining experiences were better. Not impressed. Decided to give this place a try with a friend of mine, and we both had the same reaction: probably won't be coming back. More than a bit overpriced. Service wasn't spectacular, although reasonable, considering how busy the place was with large groups. Ordered the burger, which serves as a kind of baseline for a 'tavern' style restaurant. It arrived, after a wait, overdone and way over-spiced. If the burger has garlic added for flavor, please state that on the menu - too may people are sensitive to it. But there was no excuse for how over salted it was - couldn't even taste the meat. Fries were good. But I've had much better burgers elsewhere, and at considerably lower prices. read more

Went with my boss from work and a coworker. So we had a drink, very slow to get it. The sever was kind of funny, we could not understand him. His english was not good. Then he brought us the wrong drink. No big deal he took care of it. The food, was good, and not good. Steak and burger good. Soup kind of cold, and some of the other apps had a funky taste. I was starving last night when I got off the train so I went to the Old Post Tavern for their fantastic chicken parmigiana---to die for and I have nothing but positive things to say about that (although I had to ask for bread to accompany it a few times before I finally got it). However, when paying my bill in cash, when I received my change the server didn't bring the change of coins---$0.67. I called her over and asked why not. She said oh usually we don't unless the customer asks. I said since that is your policy, why don't you just round up and give the customer an extra dollar? I found that extremely odd---they could conceivably make thousands of extra dollars annually with this unprofessional practice! Maybe 67 cents in Fairfield County doesn't seem like a lot but being short-changed any amount just feels wrong! I'm posting this in hopes the owners take note and educate their employees not to take advantage of their customers. read more

Sunday evening, averagely busy, poor service. 20 minutes before we got offered a drink, 40 minutes to get two hamburgers. Our waiter never once checked back with us and the three times he did visit (initial drinks, food order, check), he was surly. I had to ask the barman for our second round of drinks, since our server was ignoring us... even then no apology (barman was great and very responsive, kudos to him!). Burgers were not good - smelled peculiar... ate half, took the rest for the dog. Left a $2 tip. (I did personally tip the barman though... plus he earned OPT their two stars). read more

I have been to this establishment many times. The food is delicious and service is outstanding. My family and I were looking forward to spending a nice night out during family weekend at Fairfield University. I attempted to make a reservation for Oct 21. According to management there is a $10 per person service charge for a cancellation made less than two weeks prior to your reservation!! We are a party of seven, that is a $70 fee!!!! I am very disappointed this is the way they conduct business. If for some reason we had to cancel, I am sure there would be a line of families waiting for our table. After all, it is family weekend!!!!! I have never heard of a restaurant charging a fee for a cancellation!!!!! read more

We were passing through town looking for a place where we could watch the sweet 16 games and order a steak. It was happy hour and very busy so we told the bartender that we wanted to eat dinner in the bar area. We do this often so that when seats at the bar open up they give them to us instead of the people who walk in long after us and get lucky by standing closer to the patrons who leave. Recognizing that the bartenders are too busy to care we approach the hostess and put our name in for a high top table in the bar. She specifically told me that it might be a longer wait because it was happy hour. I told her it was not a problem and that we would wait. 45 minutes later 3 tables got up and the now vacant tables were quickly taken by young happy hour patrons. We approached the hostess again and she changed her story telling us that the tables couldn't be reserved that they are first come first serve and she "thought" we left. I guess this place is more interested in giving away free drinks and $1 sliders than it is with selling premium cocktails and steak dinners! read more

if only Morrissey was serving the food... saw it on CT bites, in top 10 best burgers, was intrigued. got restaurant.com coupon glad i did. lets get to this... ordered the shrimp wrapped in prosciutto with roasted pepper sauce app. what was served was 3 over done shrimp with a piece of prosciutto layered over the top and then seared down. you took one shrimp and the whole piece of prosciutto came with it. FAIL. ordered french onion soup, the kind of cheese you will choke on. this pretty much must be the reason why the french hate us. mediocre. FAIL. ordered lobster ravioli, small portion, it wasn't bad it wasn't good the side of spinach with it was underseasoned and bad. not worth the money. FAIL-y ordered burger...the train had pretty much derailed by now and the yelp review had already been formulating in my head. burger...A1 sauce in it? meatloafy? wrong. FAIL. fries, well wait a second. the only shiny beacon of hope, thank you fries for saving Old post tavern. crispy , salty, fresh. I must mention one thing though that allows me to keep a soft spot in my heart was the lilting sound of Morrissey kissing my earlobe. Celebrated a big family event with dinner at the Old Post Tavern. When we arrived the bar was full, but we appeared to be early birds. By the time we'd finished the main dining room was filled. Selections were well rounded . . . from the paella (outstanding), to the teriyaki flank steak, to the broiled cod, near perfection. The clam chowder was pricey, but had depth and amazing flavor. The P..E.I mussels (huge portion) were served in a slightly watery sauce, but the lump crab meat cakes (could have been a bit larger) and the calamari were excellent. service was outstanding after an initial jump start (hey, we're over hear!).We need to go back for lunch as the burgers and fish and chips need to be explored. . read more

Found entree prices to be a bit high, but the burgers (choice of one beef and one chicken) were priced well. I ordered beef burger with mushrooms. Tasted good but needed more mushrooms. OPT does a great job of being three distinct things: Happy hour, especially when the college crowd is here, is fun, with amazing deals on sliders and bar pizzas. Once Happy Hour ends, it morphs into a fairly good steak/chop/seafood restaurant. Can compete with any good steakhouse. Then on weekends, once you've had a great meal, there is live music, with some people dancing. Right smack in the middle of downtown, walk to train or other bars. It seems like a bizarre combination of concepts, but each is as good as it gets, and doesn't interfere with the others. Love the food, love the staff and Richie and John behind the bar, and the music is excellent. OPT is very much worth your time to try. read more

My favorites are the clam chowder, raw seafood, strip steak, and the rigatoni bolognese. The beer selection is always good (they recently added another tower with 6 taps). My boyfriend arrived for our 6:30 reservation on the dot, and proceeded to wait 20-30 minutes for our outside table. According to the hostesses, the table they thought would be free were "taking longer than expected." We were starving but sucked it up until we got seated. When it came time to order, my boyfriend ordered his steak and being a vegan I was determined to order something different than the usual pasta primavera. I told the server I wanted the margherita pizza with no cheese and asked if she could possibly have the kitchen put some extra veggies on top. She told me "that's not a pizza" and suggested I get the hummus dip instead. I had already ordered the chips and guacamole, so I didn't really want another type of "dip," so I reiterated my order for the cheeseless pizza. She basically ignored it and made me feel like she didn't want to ask the kitchen to change the pizza so I ended up ordering the hummus platter per her request. I was very unhappy and she continued to give us rude service, including when my boyfriend asked to get his steak done "medium well" and she basically gave us an eye roll and said "are you sure?". Overall it was a very unpleasant experience, and that isn't even including the family sitting next to us with 4 young boys tossing around a football right next to where we were eating. They hit a few of the patrons multiple times but it seemed the adults had enough wine to not really care. I am surprised because we usually get amazing service here but we will be looking to get my boyfriend his steak somewhere else. read more

Delicious. I went there for the first time on a Tuesday. As luck would have it, that is half-price wine night. Any bottle of wine is half price. That is not the reason to go though. The food is good, simple, well presented - as I said in the lead: delicious. I will say that the warm layered tomato app was a bit different. Not bad, my guest simply said he would have something different next time. Caesar salad could have used some anchovies. The planked salmon was delicious and the vegetables were done just right. I went here with a party of 10. We had a reservation, but when we got there the table was not set & we waited 15-20 minutes to sit. Up front we asked for 4 separate checks rather than deal with divvying up the check among at the end. The waitress informed the table how inconvenient that would be for her & she literally refused to do so. At the end of the drinks, meal, etc we had to spend our time & energy to figure out who owed what rather than just pay our separate checks like we requested before we even ordered. This stuck some people with much larger bills & ended a nice time with the uncomfortable task of "who owes what". The food was mediocre at best. Our waitress came to our table once after taking our order. The bus boys were attentive & polite. Based on this whole experience, I would never go here again. Prior to this evening, I had only had lunch here. At that time, the food was good - not unusual, but quite pricey for what we ordered and for the portion size. (I never complain about portion size!) Tonight, we tried to have dinner with 5 and were told it would be a 20 minute wait. Awesome for a Sat. night!
