I love Olive & June. I'm a 4 vs. 5 star, not because of the food--because everything I've eaten has been wonderful and the ambiance is one of the best in Austin. That said, I don't think the front of the house is quite there yet. This is based on about 10 visits to Olive & June. Anytime I call for a reservation or work with Brooke, she's just awesome. She even worked with the kitchen and marked up a menu to show us what was vegetarian and egg free for some Indian diners that were with us one night. The gals at the hostess stand most nights... not so awesome. They can get there, but they need to work on the gracious, welcoming, smiling attitude--not quite there. Additionally, some of the wait staff seem to be junior in their careers, so they're not quite there in confidence or skill. Which means that they may not bring things out from the kitchen in a good staggered manner and may not get the wine out as fast as you'd like. That said, the more senior staff is wonderful, so it's kind of luck of the draw. The atmosphere and decor are wonderful. And the setup is quite nice. They serve the full menu downstairs and upstairs in the dining area. On the upstairs patio, it's just appetizers and tapas style items. The menu is oddly arranged, so this may be throwing some of the other reviewers off. appetizers are at the top left. Main dishes are top right with side dishes to the right of that. Tapas style appetizers are below main dishes. And pasta is below the appetizers. The layout isn't conducive to figuring out how to start or order. And the layout of the wine menu is a bit overwhelming as well because it's on tons of small pages that you have to flip back and forth through. But, get over it because the food's worth it. And ignore the reviews from folks who wanted things like giant plates of food or giant salads. You're not at that kind of restaurant. These are smaller plates and are designed so that you can order multiple things and share. But it's not an inexpensive place. If you want inexpensive quantity, go somewhere else. Here's what I suggest. Approach it as if you were ordering tapas or sushi. Order some things to get started, and then keep ordering bits of things as you sit. Stop ordering when you're full. We take this approach and have never been sorry. - There are tapas style "pieces" of appetizers. order a bunch of these when you get there and just enjoy them as they come out in a staggered style -- just like ordering tapas. the crostini are amazing as are just about everything I've tried off of the piccolo menu. - Try an appetizer or two. The polenta dish with the farm egg and mushrooms is amazing. it's creamy style polenta and is just perfect. - if you're still hungry, try a pasta and maybe some side dishes. - if you're still hungry after this, keep ordering. We haven't really done the main dishes, because we're always full before we can get to that part. AND, go on Sundays when they have a family style fixed price dinner with a bazillion courses. They're extremely accommodating of vegetarians, so go even if you're vegetarian and the menu doesn't look to be friendly. It's just delicious and a lovely, long evening of tasting and talking. read more

Quite a disappointment : Maybe, it was just a bad day, but..... I don't typically complain so much, but since I am taking the time to write this thought that I would include most of the details. I had heard great things about Olive and June when they first opened so I was anxious to take an out of town guest there. I booked a res on OT in advance for a fairly early seating (7 pm) but then received a text message as I was walking up to the restaurant stating that they were so over booked that we would have to be seated outside (100 degrees in July). When we arrived, we asked if they could accommodate us inside and they finally agreed. When we walked in, the place was fairly empty with many open tables available and we only had a party of 3 ?? (BTW, over the next 1 1/2 hours it still did not fill up). After waiting for about 30 minutes for the only bottle of Cabernet on their wine list that looked interesting, we were informed that they were out of it and they had only 1 choice for a cab, chard, or Sav. Blanc. (by the glass). Although they appeared to have a visible wine cellar, their wine selection in general was pretty inadequate. We asked about the solo choice of Cab. by the glass, and the server offered to bring us a taste, and brought out a hot taste of wine, which of course tasted pretty bad, but we ordered it anyway. At least the glasses she brought out were room temperature and tasted decent. I ordered a milk for my son, which was unbeknownst to us at the time, removed from our table mid meal (half full ) by the server, when we queried her, she brought another glass and of course charged us for it. Simple Pasta order for my son (spaghetti with butter) came out with a completely wrong pasta, and then when they finally replaced it, the dish for spaghetti it had a very rancid oil in it instead of butter and was inedible. Granted at this point, we didn't complain, but then we were never asked how our meal was either. We just paid for the meal, tipped too much and left. The entrees were okay, not stellar. While I believe many establishments serve too large of portions, these entrees looked like small plate servings, but at entrée prices ($26 and up). This of course would be expected at a fine epicurean establishment, but the quality was not up to that status. The fresh tomato salad was quite good. Olive and June is a cute venue, it would be nice if they could get their act together, because as is it's pretty much a dud. read more

Hubs and I went for happy hour and i was pleasantly suprised! The food was really good and not your typical cheap carbs that are given at deals for happy hour..We had octopus, calamari (fried just right not greasy), fried ravioli, and the meatballs...Flavors were bright and none of the food was heavy or drowned in sauce,, I would definitely return, my only complaint was that there was no wine on happy hour and that sucks because thats all I drink but on Monday evenings they do a wine special all night long so maybe pair that with happy hour next time.... def worth a try!! Oh the service was awesome too and the managers came by to make sure we were having a good time- definitely a plus! TIP-parking is tricky if you dont want to valet but circle a bit to find some on the street ;-) read more

Olive & June, you confound me. I've been twice now. I love the small but efficient bar with great bartenders. I love the patio seating and the indoor seating. I love the incredibly nice hostess. I love the incredibly nice and very good wait staff. I kind of love the food. Only kind of. Here's why. The amount of food varies incredibly from dish to dish. I had the rigatoni on my first visit. Delicious and a nice sized portion. ML had the Bronzini, also delicious and also good sized. I had the ravioli on my second visit. Tasty, to be sure, but small, and only 5 of them. This is an entrée. ML had the beet salad, and the roasted King crab. Both are appetizers so she wasn't expecting huge portions, but what she got was absolutely tiny. The beet salad consisted of what appeared to be a third of a beet sliced into roughly 5 sections, with a dollop of mozzarella the size of a marble between each segment. And the King crab appetizer was literally a 4" piece of thin crab leg sliced in half lengthwise. How this passed as an appetizer I don't understand. It was so small that it barely passed as food. One other diner at our table got it and hers was the same size so it wasn't an anomaly. ML said it was tasty enough, but she loves King crab so she was predisposed to like it. Two other diners at our table got the lamb and it was a large portion, complete with bean side. I accept that good food is not the same as lots of food, and make no mistake, the dishes were all good, though I wouldn't order the ravioli again even if it were larger portioned. The beets seemed very fresh, and the crusty bread was very good and filling. The lamb was proclaimed very tasty, and the seafood pasta dish was also proclaimed as good, if a bit odd in the pasta choice. It just strikes me odd that they have such a discrepancy between dishes. Portions are INCREDIBLY small. And we're not big people who eat a lot. We had to hit a second spot for dinner after leaving. For the money we paid I was also very unhappy my pasta was hard and the calamari contained sand. I understand that sometimes happens, but it shouldn't in the 3 pieces out of the only 4 I was given. I had to keep spitting into my napkin. My meal also came with rock shrimp which was one shrimp cut into 3 pieces. There were a few hiccups throughout the evening that Olive and June were happy to discount us on, so at least they tried. We won't be back due to portion size and value for money. read more

Love going to this restaurant. It has one of the best outdoor areas you can find in Austin. It also has one of the best indoor areas you can find in Austin, it's cozy. It also has a nice bar and, because it's multi-level, it's got a great private area too. The food is spot-on, and the wine list doesn't stop. Olive & June is a fine addition to the quality and overall experience we have instantly loved about its sister restaurants: Parkside & The Backspace. The modern elegance, yet homestyle warmth in both its ambiance and dishes, lend for a perfect evening out no matter the occasion. My husband and I had an intimate corner booth on the second floor where we thoroughly enjoyed the herb marinated chicken and steak with arugula for our entrees coupled with Kale and grilled pumpkin as our side dishes. The homestyle presentation invited us to share but the flavors far exceed Mom's kitchen best. We opted to limit our courses to just an entree but as only to save room for what the chefs of Parkside & The Backspace never fail to deliver..... an absolutely amazing desert! We shared the chocolate zabaglione. And YES, it was deliriously phenomenal as expected. I cannot conclude without praising the warm, friendly and helpful staff. From the courteous valet to the smiling hostesses we were in for an evening among friends. Our server, Elizabeth, was incredibly knowledgable, making recommendations, giving us a tour of the menu and assisting us in finding the perfect wine pairing to dinner that suited our taste. We were also visited by the manager who stopped by to make sure all was well. This visit to Olive & June will certainly not be our last. We look forward to eating our way around the menu as the seasons change, enjoying the local fare in the creative hands of the chef. Next time, we're trying the homemade pasta! read more

I get that the ambiance here is "romantic" but the food is overpriced and not tasty, service was slow, and there are hordes of flies on the patio. I wanted to love this place. I really did. I had a birthday dinner here a few nights ago with 10 people. I changed the reservation a few times and everyone I talked to was extremely accommodating. We were seated immediately out on the patio, which is beautiful. Our server greeted us and seemed friendly enough. BUT THEN, our party started to arrive and we started ordering food. We got an extremely condescending speech about how it would easier if we could all order food and drinks at the same time so he wasn't "running around like crazy". I understand the entrees, of course, but even drink orders. When someone would order another drink he would scoff and reiterate that it would "easier if...". I'm sorry that my ten friends and I are not drinking at the same pace. Sorry dude, but we're paying you to bring us shit. He then proceeded to describe the wine to my friend, who works at Uchiko and is likely more knowledgeable than he is, as if the closest thing she's ever had to good wine is grape juice. The drinks were good. I spent the majority of the night drinking a cucumber drink which was extremely refreshing. Everyone else seemed happy enough with their cocktails and the wine list was extensive. Granted, each drink is about $10 or more each, and actually somewhat small, but that's to be expected. Different people in the group ordered "bites", which he described as being served family style. Bites, of course, means that the appetizer is so small it is a literal bite. Served family style (duh). While this certainly is not a difficult concept, our waiter could have done much more to ensure appetizers were properly apportioned. They were brought out and set right in front of two people that had ordered two of the same "bites" my friend and I had ordered. Why weren't they put in the middle? We figured they split our orders since we were on opposite sides of the table.. He didn't come back out for a good while, and we he finally did, the two had already eaten what was put in front of them. And trust me, it really was "a bite". We asked if there was more coming and, looking rather exasperated, he reminded it was family style and they were all served on one plate. He didn't give us any direction, and provided no reminder to us when he set it down on the OPPOSITE side of the table. Again, not a difficult concept, but a little friendly reminder would have been helpful. Eventually, I think he offered to bring us out another portion but he was so rude about it, we decided against it. The entrees finally came out. I ordered the Branzini (a type of fish) and a friend and I split one of the pastas. The pasta was a lamb mac and cheese which was really good. Not amazing, but it was solid. All of their meats are cooked on a wood-fired grill but mine was way too charred and a bit under-seasoned. I'm a huge fan of that smokey grill flavor but it almost tasted burnt. Same with the friend next to me who had the pork chop. It was decided that the "bites" were the best, but we missed out on that. All in all, the ambiance is great, the cocktails were great, albeit a bit overpriced, and the food was good. Not the best I've had in Austin, but good. It seemed to me the pastas and appetizers are their strong point and, who knows, maybe it was just an "off night" for the meats. I think the service really put a damper on the whole thing for me, especially on my BIRTHDAY. I mean, give a girl a little ass-kissing or something, not an attitude. I felt our server treated our group as a bunch of kids who wouldn't tip and knew nothing about wine or food. I guess the joke's on him as many of us worked in the restaurant industry at one point or another and would happily tip over 20% for good service. I would give it a second try but I'd definitely hope for another server, and would try to go to happy hour to avoid spending an excess of $50 for another disappointing meal. read more

If your like me and don't know what to order when it comes to Italian food, don't be discouraged. You can tell them what you want and if they have the ingredients they'll make it happen. Been here three times and never been disappointed. I was extremely excited to hear that an Italian Restaurant was going into the old El Arbol space. IMO they have one of the best patios in Austin. We started with them missing our reservation time by 45 minutes. While we waited a harried cocktail waitress did her best in the bar area - not her fault - understaffed. Then dinner... where we had a really excellent waitress. Lots of snags with operations though: out of a Pinot Noir we wanted, out of Gnocchi, out of baby asparagus... comical after a while. Menu is super unique, southern Italian - which includes raw fish and a very cool small portions tasting menu. Dessert was insane and great. The food was boring, bland, and some of it even cold (the home made bread - seemed like it had been pulled out of the fridge), and I agree with the other reviews, very overpriced given the quality and size of the plates.Paying $50-$100/person at a place like Uchiko where you mind is blown, is acceptable, but this was just, honestly, lame. We had the pleasure of enjoying Easter brunch after my confirmation. My mother in law was in town and we wanted a special dining experience. Boy did we get it! Came here on a Friday night reservation with a party of 5 and, while the food was delicious (albeit a little pricey for the portions), the service was S L O W. Our waitress was incredibly attentive upon our arrival only to disappear after taking our drink order. In total, I believe we spent around 2 hours waiting - waiting for drinks, waiting for water refills, waiting for food ordered (over an hour on food alone). Another party seated near us actually found a water jug to serve themselves after waiting so long. The restaurant space is lovely and the food is great, but for the price the service leaves much to be desired. Dined here opening weekend, which would explain the painfully slow service. While it felt like we spent more time waiting for our food to arrive, than time spent eating it...it was very flavorful! Burrata ($13) for four pieces was delicious and when the 2-piece crostini was finally "tracked down" we were so hungry, we wished we'd ordered more because it felt like it was a tease. My biggest complaint was about my Linguini entree. The description said it came with prawns. I asked the waitress about what seafood was in it because I don't like a lot of other seafood. She said, just mussels. When it arrived with a baby octopus and calamari, my pregnant stomach turned! And prawns??? 3 small shrimp was all I saw in my dish ($17). Now, if you like mixed seafood, you'd probably enjoy this but I felt deceived and wished I would have ordered something that I could tolerate. I hate when prawns are described and small shrimp are what is served... Not the same thing IMO! For dessert--5 stars! Seeing walnut gelato instantly took me back to the Amalfi Coast where i fell in love with walnut (buce) gelato. The white chocolate panna cotta was soooo good! The quick asummary: Authentic italian cuisine with homeade real pasta and the best italian wine list I have seen anywhere in Austin. Environment is great too. Try it! Dishes we tried: Chese plate - had great variety and all were excellent. I normally like maybe 1 out of 3 on a chese plate and I liked all 5 we had. Spicy tomato pasta - cannot remmeber the name but had great flavor and pasta was cooked perfectly. Biggest critique of the evening was I felt it was too spicey. Really detracted from the fresh flavors in the sauce. Braised text lamb - The lamb was killer, really tendor with great flavor. The accoutrements were muddled and I felt like they did not tie the dish together. Too many vegetables and that just didn't feel cohesive but the lamb was still very good. Dessert: We had zeppoles that were fantastic, definitely recommend trying them. Basically an italian doughnut. I have had a really hard time finding them in any italian restaurnt I've been to so it was a real treat. Service: Was quite good and they have someone very familiar with the wine list if you need guidance which I cannot image you won't with the size and scope of the italian regions, but this is a good thing. Try something new and fun! They have outside dining that was not open because of rain at the time but definitely recommend taking advantage of this when it is not too hot! read more

I wish I could do 3.5 stars. Olive and June has created an oasis in the middle of the city. It is stunning, and sitting on the patio feels like you've taken a jaunt to Mexico. The food is very good, not excellent, but is priced as excellent. I had a pasta dish and added chicken, which was very dry. I believe they cook their noodles al dente, which is perhaps how they are meant to be served, but I'm used to fully cooked noodles so I did not enjoy them. The frozen cocktails were a delight in the Texas summer. Fritto misto was really tasty. Service was excellent. I'd go back but not go out of my way to do so. read more

Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Don't forget your 6 P's. I really liked this place the first time I came here, in fact, I fell in love. Which is why I raved so much to my friends, and drug them out with me despite the expensive price tag and small portions. Inconsistency seems to be the name of the game here. I was saddened and a little bit worried that my taste in food would be discredited when my suggestions in appetizers turned out to be dismal and unfulfilled to the hype I placed in them. Service was bland and forced, hostesses picked at their arm-zits within eye view, courses came out in incorrect order, hastefully taken away in a huff and tasted like they sat under a warming lamp until thirty minutes later when they were intended to come out. Like remember when you'd make Kraft macaroni as a kid and it sat in the bowl on the sink because you were too lazy to clean the dish immediately? That shouldn't be what risotto tastes like. Old Kraft macaroni and cheese. Not that I, you know.. ate.. the cold, old Kraft macaroni after it sat out for an hour. But maybe now I would rather. read more

I asked them to add extra vegetables to the spaghetti pomodoro (carbo-loading before half marathon), and they accommodated with a hearty mix of vegetables. It was a very nice night for us here. Even though it was super busy, we had a lovely romantic evening. Our waitress was awesome and her suggestions were honest and spot on, which made our dining experience all the more better! The cocktails were pretty good, so were the appetizers (the one with the poached egg and polenta was delicious!) Between the multiple cocktails and the appetizers and the bread, we were pretty full so the portion of main course was just right for us with leaving space for the delicious dessert. We recently ate here at the recommendation of a friend that lives in Austin. I feel compelled to write a review after our wonderful experience and reading through some of the 1-2 star reviews. We made a reservation for 6:15PM and arrived early at 5:45PM. The hostess informed us that our table was not ready, but she could try and have it ready by 6:00PM. I had no expectations of them seating us when we got there, and figured we'd sit at the bar for drinks before getting our table at our reservation time of 6:15PM (they were pretty busy). It just happened to be happy hour till 6:30PM, of which all drinks and appetizers on the menu are half off; pretty good bargain! Our bartender recommended the Basil & Sun to my wife (their version of a mojito) and I had The Foreigner (Hendrick's gin, cucumber water, lemon), both were great and at a great price for happy hour! We were thinking about appetizers and were recommended the grilled quail by a party next to us. After finishing 1 drink, we were about to order an appetizer when the hostess came up and informed us that our table was ready. She politely waited until we closed out our tab and showed us to our table on the 2nd floor. I have to say that I was impressed with the ambiance in the restaurant, very comfortable, noise level was a bit elevated (people were obviously enjoying their evening), but not too high. As we were seated at our table, our waiter was prompt to bring us menus and get our second drink order. I was about to order their Bloody Mary, however, our waiter informed me that it was not an ordinary recipe and that some may not like it. He recommended the Bella Milano (zucca, cocchi, st. elder elderflower liqueur, lime) instead; I have to say it was an excellent recommendation! We also ordered the Grilled Quail appetizer (pomegranate, espresso, pine nuts, pickled butternut squash, fig vinaigrette), since it was half off for happy hour, which my wife and I thought was excellent. Sure it was a small portion for a fairly high normal price, but for happy hour, we thought it was definitely worth it. For dinner my wife had the Gemelli with pork sausage,white wine, arugula, garlic, fennel. The pasta was cooked perfectly, and the flavors were delicious; if we had one complaint, it would be that it was a bit salty. I had the Braised Rabbit (with pancetta,patty pan squash,cipollini onion, pistachio salsa verde), as I've never tried rabbit before and I've been itching to try it. It was absolutely fantastic! Extremely tender, not a hint of gaminess (which I had expected), and layers of flavor! We also had an order of Roasted Brussels Sprouts with oregano, paprika almonds and shaved pecorino romano which was a pleasant addition. We ended the night with a gelato trio (roasted banana, mint something or other, and don't remember the third). All in all, we thought the food was great and definitely worth the asking price (yes, it is a fairly pricey restaurant). During our entire meal, if the waiter wasn't checking up on us, his assistant was constantly filling up our empty water glasses and attending to our needs. Second time here. Service was very slow and items not out on time. Charged for kids meals and last time kids under 12 were free?? Told to order under family style menu which is fine. The only issue was that they only brought two pasta plates for 6 people. Last time we received 4 pasta plates for 6 people?? Probably won't be back read more
