A South Beach institution! This place is a case study of how to not only survive but thrive in a difficult restaurant market like Miami. The food is always good, great variety of dishes, something for everyone on the menu. I LOVE their Caribbean seafood soup, an absolute must! Also love their pastas, especially the seafood and bolognese! Service has improved a lot, became a challenge a couple of years ago but so happy to see them back on track. On a relatively quiet street so very nice to seat outside in the Winter and inside July to October. A neighborhood place that is the anchor of the area's restaurant scene. Prices have gone nuts though, especially for dinner, close to $70-100 per person. Don't get me wrong, food is good, but it's a neighborhood place, you can't charge almost $30 for pasta and upwards of $12 for a 'cheap' glass of wine. Makes me feel that their landlord is killing their clientele as I imagine they have to raise prices to meet the crazy rent demands. A great place though and looking forward to many more - yet less frequent, can't afford more - visits! read more

I used to come here all the time. I loveddd it and took everyone here. My faves were the French onion soup, the Asian salad and the burger. The past two times i have gone it has been extremely underwhelming and bland. The first time I thought ok they are just having an off day. I went yesterday with my boyfriend bc we were craving French onion soup. We each got one (they are a $12 soup each) and we're very unhappy when they came out. First there was no melted cheese on top. When I used to it it was smothered in bubbling cheese, had large pieces of bread in it and an amazing flavor. Both of ours had like a random glob of melted cheese just floating around. There was a tiny piece of bread in it, barely any onions and a flavorless, watery broth. We then ordered the burger and the steak sandwich. Both extremely bland and dry. The service was right on point as always, the food was presented nicely and served promptly, which is always a plus. Especially since I was starving and hadn't yet eaten since the night before. I was a tad disappointed that I missed the late breakfast (ends at 230p), but it was 330 when we got there and I guess I was begging for a lot... 3.5 I've been here more than once but I suppose that has more to do with proximity and a lack of options rather than a deep-seated desire to return over and over again. For what it is and where it is, Oliver's is decent enough if you abide by a few rules. Actually, there's only one. One rule. Get the Dutch Apple pancake. That's it. That's the rule. You might opt for a mimosa. You may want a cup of coffee. In case you're sitting outside and it's hot, a tall glass of water is never a bad idea. But, as far as eating at Oliver's, there's one rule: get the Dutch Apple pancake. The pancake is absolutely huge. I have a big appetite and I struggle to get through it. The caramelized ends provide a satisfying crunch while the generous amount of apples provide just enough sweet to take you to the edge. The ratio of fruit to cake is just right so that you're full by the time you're finished but you fill as though you've eaten something other than syrupy fruit. Inherent in this rule are other rules. Order the pancake (so, you're likely coming here for brunch and not another meal). Order the pancake (odds are your endorphins will be so high from the sugary fruity goodness that your eye muscles won't get a workout from rolling due to the spotty service; both times I came here, my table received wrong orders, long wait times and some sort of physical snafu -- spilled water or a tripped waiter). Order the pancake (and only the pancake so you don't waste time with the criminally bland eggs and potatoes -- in any permutation. I've had both the make-it-yourself omelet and scrambled eggs & home fries; awful. If you can't make eggs, you shouldn't be in a kitchen). Order the pancake (and stick with that. This is the beach and prices are higher than they should be. If you go on a brunch spending spree, your wallet and gut will not be happy with you). So... order the pancake. read more

I'm in love.... We ordered the greek salad with grilled chicken. Let me tell you this simple Greek salad was one of the best I've had. The chicken is actually grilled! The dressing is lite and so tasty. My picky friend ordered the grilled calamari and did not return it!! The atmosphere is very cozy and relaxing. The plants are just beautiful with the little lights in them. Overall Oliver's has a great vibe that is very hard to come across. As for the service.... perfect!! After reading the reviews for Oliver's on Yelp, I decided to buy the Groupon. I paid $10.00 for $20.00 worth of food (I LOVE GROUPON). I just wish my last visit was 4 stars worthy like most of the reviews I read. We arrived at Oliver's and were immediately taken care of, we were seated and we were told our waiter would be right with us. Wait.... Wait... Wait... He finally came and brought us the Menus... Wait... Wait... Wait... Wait... Then he took our order... Wait...Wait... Wait... 20 minutes later the group next to us who arrived 10 minutes after us had their food. Wait... Wait... Wait... Wait... 41 minutes later (Yes I was checking the time) we received our food. The food is what has earned Oliver's the second star. I ordered the Belgium waffle with fresh fruit and whip cream, my little brother had the French Toast (HUGE!!!!) with bananas., and my friend ordered a apple pancake (HUGE) something like that. After my little brother had the French toast he was like "I can't breathe". The French toast was by far the best of the 3. Our waiter was MIA for most of our meal; I would have to ask another waitress if she could please find him. We had to ask for water refills. It was just a HOT MESS. The other disturbing thing was the amount of HUGE flies that were inside. They were everywhere, luckily we sat in an area that didn't have any but we could see them flying around another part of the restaurant. I explained to my waiter the moment I sat down that I had a Groupon, he said "No worries, just give it to me at the end". I did just as he asked. At the end of the meal I pulled up the coupon code from my cell. He started walking around the restaurant lost and confused with my cell phone. Finally, someone who I assume was a manager looked at the Groupon like it was something out of the twilight zone. He then asked me why I hadn't given the code at the beginning of the meal. My eye started twitching and my 10 yr old brother grabbed my arm and before I POPPED OFF, he told me "Don't worry just calm down". It made me laugh so hard. A brunch place known for its umbrellas and being a neighborhood favorite. I was really hoping to love this place but shortly after arriving I knew that this place wouldn't be the one for me. Oliver's will hold a reservation for a large party and the staff is helpful. However, our server was clearly upset about our table. The menu seemed huge at first but isn't that large or overwhelming really. There is only a beer and wine place so: mimosas: si bloody marys: no We started off with a delicious salmon and brie on crostini appetizer. As for the main event I ordered banana french toast and my friend/brunch accomplice Ramon C ordered an omelet and we shared one another's plates. Nothing was amazing, just overall ok. Although I would go back and try it again. I must say the management here is very cool and they will work with their clients. I found the management to be fair, respectful, and helpful. Our server seemed unhappy to be dealing with our table which was unfortunate as that always affects the gathering one way or the other. If you like dining al fresco, come to Oliver's, have a mimosa, start with the salmon and brie. As mentioned in other reviews the portions are generous so be aware when ordering. read more

I've never been truly blown away by Oliver's brunch, but it has recently worked its way into my regular rotation. Prices are fair, it's only a few blocks from my humble abode, and the brunch selection is pretty tasty. The popovers, stuffed with scrambled eggs, sausage, and cheese, are huge! I'm a big fan of popovers, but stuff 'em with delicious breakfast food, and you really have a unique dish. I've heard they sell out of these on the regular, so if you're heart's set on this dish, make sure you get there relatively early (this is South Beach, after all). Other faves of my regular brunchin' crew are the American breakfast, which includes your usual eggs, breakfast meat & potatoes, and the omelettes, which always look really tasty (but tend to be a little dry). The pancakes are pretty spectacular, and might actually be my new favorite. Made with your choice of fruit or chocolate chips, this come out piping hot with crispy edges and fluffy insides. In other words - the perfect pancake. You'd be remiss not to give 'em a shot. The blackened mahi sandwich from their lunch menu is pretty great, though a little messy to eat. Service can be spotty. Sometimes it's great, sometimes your server will disappear for what seems like an eternity right when you need something. Prices are on par for the brunch scene - expect roughly $10 a person for food only, upwards of $20/per if you're planning on mimosa-ing with your brunch ($9 a pop). Parking in this neighborhood is a chore, so walk or DecoBike your way over! read more

I came here with a party of 5 - no reservations - and were were quickly seated. Love it! The food is sooooooooooooooooooo good and reasonably priced. Aside form being good, it is freaking huge. This review is so unequivocally positive and gushing that I am almost embarrassed to submit it. My hairdresser, Steven, works at the Rosanno Feretti salon right next to Oliver's. Every year, he begins at the top of Oliver's menu, and every time he goes in, orders the next dish, sequentially. At any other place this would be absurd, but at Oliver's, everything is that damned good, that it somehow works. While some dishes are better than others, this eclectic menu has never disappointed me. From the brunch pancakes (which really taste more like "cakes") to perfectly al dente spaghetti with olive oil, to crispy, well-flavored fried chicken or Madras-style chicken curry, there are no misses. I live right down the street and eat there two or three times a week. Every time I go to the newest Miami culinary hot spot, I find myself comparing the place to Oliver's, with the new place always coming up on the losing end. The staff is particularly friendly to regulars, which is fine with me, as this is most definitely a local place, which is way off the radar of most tourists. In summary, as long as Oliver's stays put, I won't even consider moving from my condo. I wish they had a full liquor license (only wines for now) but its a small sacrifice, given all the positives. read more

I was soaked and not even an apology. I had to get up and leave. You would think the owner standing 6 feet from me would come over and apologize. Nope just sat there and starred at me. Probably thought I was some tourist only should he know I am a local. So I went up to him and told him it was bad business for him to not even acknowldge everything of mine being ruined. Had a great brunch here yesterday with some awesome Yelpers - seems every event I go to I have the pleasure of meeting a yelper I haven't met before - this time I finally got to meet Theo H. Thanks Maria et al. for waiting for us to arrive before ordering :-) When we got to the table an order of toasted bread/bagel slices with brie & salmon had been ordered - it was delicious. I really like the option to incorporate brie into the dishes here, since it's such a sweet and soft cheese, the flavor is mild and seemed to compliment well the dishes I tasted with it. As Greshka mentioned, we shared the omelet and it was the perfect size, left us full enough to still be able to enjoy the beach immediately after in our bikinis (read, no over stuffed belly here) - so if you don't like to eat too much or get full easily, I recommend sharing. Maria's banana stuffed french toasts looked DELICIOUS, and Jeff's apple pancake was HUGE and also delicious looking. The staff was present and quick, but not overly friendly, which was fine, since we were pretty much talking with each other the whole time, so they didn't come to interrupt frequently. You can buy all the mimosas you want here, but if you'd like that hair of the dog bloody mary, you're in the wrong place. Nothing that an order of tomato juice, pepper, tabasco sauce, lemon and some smuggled-in-(out of view)-vodka can't fix. I'd like to come back and try a dessert here one of these evenings, or maybe even a glass of wine while relaxing with friends over a nice conversation. It never disappoints! I have eaten here since they opened and I've never had a bad meal or bad service. Which on the beach is very rare. On my last visit I came for their Sunday brunch. I had their old fashioned Dutch apple pancake which I love. Service was great. They refilled my coffee quickly and often since I was recovering from a long night out. I had a taste of their Belgian waffles, yum. Someone else had a their bacon cheeseburger and it came with those perfect crispy fries. First of all, read my other reviews and you'll see that I am not typically a disgruntled customer. I'd been a loyal Oliver's customer for 3 years. But today the nasty management lost a customer, along with the out-of-towners and locals I routinely bring there and recommend it to. Went in alone for a quick breakfast on my way to a gig. Outside was crowded but inside was empty. I had a half-hour, which I mentioned up front and was perfectly happy go elsewhere if they couldn't accommodate that time frame. I know it can be a pain when people are in a rush. I approached someone in a uniform and inquired as to how long a specific menu item might take (I already knew what I wanted). He told me, and asked if that's what I wanted. I answered in the affirmative, when a woman behind the bar in hipster dark-framed glasses interrupted, saying, "He's a bus boy. He can't take your order," in a curt tone that made me feel embarrassed for the poor bus boy who was trying to be so helpful. So I said, "OK, what should I do?" She said a waiter would have to take my order. When I asked how long that would take, she said it depended on where I sat. I said I was happy to sit wherever she wanted me to, since I was in a rush and trying to be helpful. And, in an empty restaurant -- knowing I'd be gone in about 25 minutes -- she sent me to a table in the corner facing a wall. After a few minutes wait, the manager came over and tried to give me a menu; I told him that I already knew what I wanted, and without a word, he walked away, I assumed to summon a waiter. Not so. After another several minutes, I went back to the woman at the bar, who knew I was in rush, remember, and asked her if a waiter would take my order soon. A waiter standing at the bar said, "Oh, you can just order right here if you don't mind eating at the bar." Which I didn't mind at all, but didn't know why the woman didn't recommend that from the get-go. When I asked her, she gave me a nasty look, at which point I decided I didn't want to eat there anymore. The manager came over to ask what happened, and the woman said, "She can't just walk in and order from the first person she sees!" (Remember, I was inquiring about whether or not they could serve me in the time I had, and the bus boy offered to take my order.) When I tried to explain this to the manager, he kept interrupting me. Clearly, he wasn't interested in listening. I took my business a few doors down to Gusto Vino & Cafe, a new cafe, with extremely quick, very friendly service, fresh food, delicious coffee served with steamed milk, and really nice décor. If you're looking to eat on West Ave. give Gusto a try instead. read more

Located at West and 9th in Sobe, I decided the second I turned the corner that it was a gay hangout. Only male waiters, albeit hot ones...and hot gay couples with matching shirts! *awww* We walked in and there was a family of 6 in the middle having brunch, then we didn't feel like we were invading some kind of private party/violating some kind of code. :) Service was good, our waiter was attentive and even gave us "instructions" on how to eat the Oliver's popover! I'm really sad with the whole experience today and was hoping for better based on the reviews. $4.50 Fresh OJ, Side of Sausage Links [some what cold] and French Toast served very cold, told the server however he acted as if he did NOT understand and walked away. When they brought the butter it was frozen [why do restaurants do this?]. Couldn't even eat the food tried to wave the waiter down he noticed but continued to pour coffee to the other folks and never stopped by. When he did he took the plate never offered to bring another, sad sorry nothing on top of that brought the bill with the French Toast on it. Serious, I'm not paying for something I tried to send back 2x but no one seemed to cared. When the waiter got upset w/my asking to remove the charge the manager then came over I explained he even didn't seem to care. I ordered a burger with applewood bacon and got it with regular bacon. I thought, "this is not a big deal. Maybe they ran out of the applewood. I get that things happen". I still wanted to mention it to Melina, our waitress, to bring it to her attention. I did so nicely and she snapped at me, "you don't want it?!" I was taken aback by her response and I asked that she simply mention it to her manager. 20 minutes passed and the manager did not come to our table. I finally flagged him down. He admitted that it was not applewood bacon and then he proceeded to stare at me blankly with this awkward unapologetic look on his face. He did not care that she was being rude and inattentive or that they were falsely advertising foods in the menu. This place is slipping. read more

I don't know why it took me so long to try Oliver's but I'm happy I made moves to check it out today. Parking seemed like it would be a nightmare but we were able to snag a prime spot on the same block. When we arrived it was somewhat busy but luckily there were some open tables outside so we chose to sit in a corner close to the sidewalk (all outside tables offer some degree of shade which is a plus in my book). From beginning to end, the service was PERFECT. Michael was our server and he is your definitive waiter when it comes to optimal service. He knew when to approach the table and how often, our water glasses were never empty and every time he spoke to us he had a genuine smile on his face. The menu had a decent variety of salads, sandwiches, flatbreads, etc. and I opted for the blackened mahi mahi sandwich with sweet potato fries. The food came out in a timely fashion and it was very good. All the flavors were clean and simple which is exactly what I look for when having lunch on a work day. I don't want some sloppy mess that is going to put me in a food coma when I have another 5 hours of work to put in (I like to save my sloppy messes for happy hour).
