After getting home in the wee hours of the morning the night before, there is nothing more than I wanted then some comfort food. Olympia fills that need. So, we headed over on a Saturday afternoon around 2 to grab some sustenance. At times when they arent so busy, you are allowed to seat yourself so we walked in and picked a cozy booth by the window at the end of the dining room. Jukeboxes (that still work) are available in every booth. $1 gets you a couple plays so bring your quarters if that's your fancy. All hail 90's music! One of the reasons why we like it here so much is the dependability of the waitresses. No new faces, always friendly and accomodating and they keep you happy. I like it. I ordered the Cream of Broccoli soup and a Ham and Cheese club. Lovey got a Chef salad. After a few minutes, our food came and it was so good. Hit the spot. The soup was yummy on all counts. Piping hot, loaded with broccoli, serving size was huge for $3. The club sandwich was everything it should be. Crispy, loaded with lettuce and tomato, ham and swiss cheese. Fries needed salt desperately however, I would rather salt them myself then send them back for coughing on too much of it. Chef salad was HUGE. Served on a lengthy, oblong dish my boyfriend had no problem digging in. He loved it. All the meat was fresh, all the veggies were crisp and beautiful. And served with plenty of dressing so no running out! We ate lunch with 2 drinks for about $25 before tip. I love the consistency of the Olympia. One of the better choices on Berlin Turnpike. Stop in if you haven't. Reasonably priced, amazing breakfast (served all day) and plenty of seating in the back of the restaurant as well. Parking can be tricky if you are pulling in from Berlin Turnpike. Your best bet would be to access the restaurant from the side street. read more

Surprised this place was fairly empty on a recent mid morning mid-week visit. The diner has a lot of character....its very old school. My sausage and cheese omelet was quite good....full of ingredients and very tasty. My rye toast was hard and crispy...I didn't like that. home fries were ho-hum. Our young server was really nice and efficient..very likeable. we aren't talking gourmet here...but its not supposed to be. Its like taking a time machine trip back 50-60 years or so. read more

Sorry Folks, can't like every restaurant. Went here one morning with family for breakfast. Food was honest diner food. Went here one evening with family for dinner. Food was terrible. The turkey used in their Hot Open Turkey Sandwich was literally 4 slices of the worst turkey roll imaginable. Another person's Chicken Parmesan was made with frozen pre-made breaded chicken patties. Better to be simple and selective then have a menu filled with items that are sub-par. Will not be headed back that way, anytime soon. read more

This is a GENEROUS three star review. There was no button for "2.51 stars," so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt with regards to that... But mark my words, the Olympia was a MARGINAL dining experience at best. My girl and I went out for dinner on a Friday night just before a big shopping trip, and we needed to be quick. The Olympia was right in the area we needed to be, and it was not crowded at all... Everything looked ship shape... Aaaaand then we ran into the totally inept waitstaff... We were looking at our menus when the waitress asked "do you need another minute?" We answered yes... Well, "a minute" turned into FIFTEEN. The girl quite literally disappeared on us. It took a sneer and a snide remark to the manager before a different waitress came back to actually take our order... That said, when the food finally did come, it was seriously good. Trust me when I say that all 2.51 stars are being awarded for the food here. I had a good pastrami on rye, and my girl had a "Southwestern Burger," with onion rings, cheddar, and bbq sauce. Sweet, sweet waitstaff who're nice -- but airheads. More than once we've had to *ask* for cutlery *after* the food's arrived. They also miss stuff like butter with the bread basket, cream with the coffee, stuff like that. I hate to pester waitstaff so having to ask for all this stuff makes me self-conscious and a bit cross. That being said... We love the fact that we can get a cocktail here nearly any time but for early morning hours! Every time I go here I order a side of mashed potatoes with gravy. It's so diner-licious that I find it addictive. Hamburgers are just great. Prime rib is so-so; opt for something thoroughly cooked, like pot roast or meat loaf. The *flavors* of everything are obviously created by a chef who knows what they're doing. Breakfast here is exactly what you'd expect from a top-notch diner, fresh, hot and perfectly executed -- but you pay for it. This is no $1.99 breakfast joint. I've paid $40 for breakfast for two but loved it. So be careful about ordering sides/ making substitutions, etc. Weekends, steer clear of the back dining room for breakfast or lunch unless you want to wait forever for service and be surrounded by a zillion drooling, screaming children. My carpool buddy was slated for the last round of games, while I ended up in the first round so I convinced my pal Matt to eat pancakes with me while my ride relived her childhood. This place definitely deserves a sold 4 stars for diner type food and ambiance. They also have very nice servers and the cooks are super FAST! Ask for Renada, she is my fave waitress, and has already remembered how i like my order! We have essentially been here 3 times in the last week (ok, actually the last 4 days).... We had dinner on Wed night, takeout on Fri night (i was sick and hunny brought me their yummy chicken rice soup and a tuna melt....great comfort food that was indeed comforting, as well as very yummy!) and then on Saturday we went for a late brunch. Each time was very satisfying, so this place definitely deserves4 stars in my book. I am very fussy about diners, I love diner food if its made with good quality ingredients, which they definitely use. They also are very accommodating. For Dinner we had: Ham Steak and Mashed potatoes and corn (me) as well as a bowl of Chicken Rice Soup (yummy)! which comes with dinner. Also had a ginger ale (they offer free refills, which i don't care much about, but i know some yelpers do!). This to me is a very classic diner meal, and it was very good. The gravy they serve with the taters is really yummy also! I'm not a big gravy person usually, but i did enjoy it! The hunny had the fried boneless pork chops, with the same sides. He also really enjoyed his. He could only eat one chop, and ended up eating the other one for breffie the next day, adn really loved it! LOL For our Saturday brunch, we each had an omelet, I had ham, cheddar and onion, and it was awesome! We also had a side of French toast and crispy bacon, both were really delish....I loved how the french toast was nice n soft , and piping hot. The bacon was super crisp just like we like. Hunny had the Greek omelet, with tomatoes and feta, and wheat toast. He was very happy. Oh and their home fries were good, definitely fresh (not frozen potatoes) they needed a bit of S & P....next time im going to ask for them a bit crispy. But i loved that they were chunked up and done on the griddle, not the deep fried frozen crap u get some places! My English muffin (i like them grilled) was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, just as i like it, You would not believe how friggin hard it is to get it done just right at most places. i joked i should take a pic of it and bring it to MO's and other breffie places around to show them how it should be done. Most places give u the damn thing practically uncooked. This diner's was golden brown perfection! I'm telling you, i was so happy, they earned one star just in that darned english muffin!.... hehehe! :o) Its so hard to find a decent breffie place around here (let alone one that serves all day) or to find a decent diner that does other meals justice as well, This place is great, and the ambiance is fun and retro.....and it has been very clean when I've been there. This diner, nestled in a corner on the Berlin Turnpike in Newington, has been here forever. I remember how it used to be lit up in the evening...it was impossible to miss. Ate here with my wife for breakfast on a Saturday. The waitress was friendly, and when we weren't quitre ready with an order, she said she'd be back in a few minutes...and she was! My wife had 2 eggs with a side order of blueberry pancakes. I had a full stack o'jacks, and a side of sausage. Her eggs were cooked perfectly, and pancakes looked good - she didn't give me a bite, which means she really liked them. My pancakes were thick,tender inside, perhaps a tad crispy on the outside, and to be honest, even though they were hot, they didn't have a whole lot of flavor. The sausages were double-thick breakfast links, and were quite good. The coffee was fine. The place itself, while clean, showed some signs of aging. I guess that can be expected of a place that has been serving for over 60 years. It has all the satinelss steel and deco-type art one would expect of a period diner, including the table-side music players...yayay! read more

I thought I had the best service, I explained I have child with ASD the waitress was awesome but when my kid wanted to wash hands because they got dirty from touchy wet food and so it was time to go home it was a quick transition. I rushed out and packed my food in a to go container and asked for help saying I need to pay, and I need a to go bag do you have one. And wasn't offered help or a bag or no one took my check. I had to triage 17 things. As I was paying I left my food on the counter so I could hold on to the baby. Please note I hadn't eaten any of my food this was a full meal. I don't have much money to go out so this was a treat for my son being so good earlier with a new activity on so I spent $59 on food that was un touched figured we could eat it at home, so I a accidentally left it on the table when paying I noticed half way home and I called from the car the line was busy. I called 17 times finally 15 minutes I guess before they close at 5 I got someone and I asked hey can you help me? I asked for someone to transfer my food to a bad or help me I knew my hands were to full I left it cant I swing back I just noticed I wanted to call to confirm that was okay, and I was told my $50 meal was trashed so gladded I tipped $11 I just needed an extra hand. I'm sorry we are autistic I'm sorry I do my best we didn't scream or yell i left right as we were getting sensory in the restaurant I just asked for support or a bag but they can't be bothered and the charge $50 and throw a untouched meal away and now I have no food. We didn't even take one freaking bite and I spent all that money for nothing!!! I'm so upset!!!! Never again. I can't even believe you would toss alll my food away I am in handicap parking out front heck if you didn't have a bag you couldn't have waved me down or helped me bring my container since my son has a disability. I'm disgusted. Sad and out so much Monday for literally nothing. I will be making a formal complaint and talking to the BBB as man. Some team work or pick up the phone or something. If I'm anything, I'm a sucker for diners. That being said, the Olympia Diner did not really stick out in any way. Don't get me wrong, though, as stopping here for breakfast one morning while visiting a buddy in Connecticut was definitely a pleasant and satisfying experience. After all, the Olympia has that old-school diner car set-up complete with stools at the counter, lots of well-shined metal throughout, and individual jukeboxes at the table. So it definitely has that back-in-the day vibe down pat, which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. Furthermore, there is an extensive menu (with breakfast all day!) and very friendly and prompt wait staff (my coffee cup never went empty which is an important measuring stick at a diner in my humble opinion). However, everything just seemed pretty average overall. Maybe I've just been to too many diners through the years, and I do admit that I am at least somewhat partial towards the NJ diners. In any case, there are clearly better diners out there than the Olympia, but there are also much, much worse as well. Overall, the Olympia is definitely a worthwhile place to stop by for that old school diner experience and friendly service, but probably not anything to write home about. read more

After reading the reviews, I tried Olympia Diner. I ordered via phone for a pick up. When I entered the diner I stood at the door next to the cashier stand which was vacant for the moment and was told by a server that I could sit anywhere. When the cashier/hostess returned, I went to her and told her that I was there to pick up an order. She found my order and told me that I could take a seat while she retrieved it. I sat and while I waited, I looked around. The diner was very clean and the servers seemed attentive and efficient. It was not packed, although the parking lot was, but it was a good size crowd. I received my my order and was on my way. I order the Olympian which was absolutely huge and both my two children and I ate this meal! It came with three eggs, corn beef hash, home fries, toast and two pancakes. The hash was really good, a different flavor, but I really enjoyed it. I wish the toast was a bit more "toasted". The pancakes were tasteless to me, but my children enjoyed them. Overall, not a bad place! read more

This diner is on US-5 / Route 15 southbound but access is available from the northbound side via traffic light intersection. This is one of those interesting old-fashioned diners made from a train car. However, the fascination stopped there. The food is so-so with portions on the small side. I gave this place two tries. The first time I thought maybe they were having an off day but my second visit was worse than the first. The waitress seemed uninterested in our table. My husband was still deciding so he told her "She (me) can go first". The waitress, looking at the people who just walked in, not looking at l us, said "OK" and then just walked away from the table. Then we waited a solid 5 minutes for her to come back. I got a Turkey Club Triple Decker sandwich with fries and a coffee. The coffee wasn't great and wasn't very hot so I was hoping the 2nd cup would be fresher.....I'll never know cuz I was never even offered a refill. So it was $2.15 for a old and tepid coffee in a mug only filled halfway. The Turkey Club was gross. Oscar Mayer "turkey breast" with cold bacon. My husband commented on the fact that it wasn't real Turkey and the response was basically, 'it's not the way I'd do it but I'm just the waitress.' No offer of anything else....even some more lousy coffee. The fries were the only thing good about my meal. I ate about 1/3 of my plate before I threw in the towel. My husband gave me a piece of his Rueben, which tasted good. His came with fries and cole slaw. The slaw was drenched in mayo and maybe vinegar (?) and was inedible. The waitress came with the check but noticed that I didn't eat much so she took the check back and took off 15%, which was a noble effort. I just left this diner, I ordered 2 eggs, bacon and a coffee. I do not eat carbs , therefore I didn't want home fries and toast. When I received my check I was charged for the whole breakfast including home fries and toast. Spoke with cashier not understanding why when they had 2 eggs and bacon listed as sides. She was very nice and understood and made the adjustment. I found that the runners (guys) picking up dishes etc where much more helpful then my waitress. Should have tipped them. Not impressed at all. Service wasn't that great. A younger kid came and took our order and wasn't attentive at all. I ordered eggs over-easy, home fries (extra crispy), toast and bacon. My boyfriend ordered a waffle with scrambled eggs and sausages. They're obviously cutting corners by prepping as much food as possible. The home fries were boiled potatoes with no seasoning thrown on the grill for a minute and the bacon was obviously cooked in the oven and warmed up in the microwave before they were served. Toast was barely toasted, and my boyfriend didn't get his scrambled eggs (the server admitted he didn't write down). The only good thing about the breakfast were the eggs (how can you screw eggs up?) We won't be coming back here. They're on the expensive side too. I enjoy eating out, but I'd like to get what I pay for. I feel like I wasted money on gas by even going to this place. read more

We haven't been back since I posted that review, but decided to give it another try since it's the closest eatery to home. I ordered soup and a salad and decaf; hubby ordered soup and a grinder. The waitress asked if we wanted our soup and food together, and we said yes. A few minutes later, I got my salad and hubby got his grinder. No soup. Never saw our waitress again. Half an hour later, a different waitress asked if we were all set. I told her we hadn't gotten our soups. She apologized, and stated "the other waitress never told her we ordered soup." This is probably one of the best diners I've ever been to. I've only ordered the veggie omelet because it is consistently delicious. With only two eggs, the omelette looks bigger than other diners that use three eggs. It is also packed with veggies, which is a huge bonus for me! Stopped at the Olympia Diner for breakfast. Loved the classic diner look and feel. Place was empty at 7 am on a holiday Monday. Sat in an empty booth and was promptly waited on by a very nice waitress. Free coffee till 9 am. I ordered a Western Omelet with home fries and rye toast. Beth ordered Eggs Benedict with home fries. Beth loved the eggs Benedict, I thought my omelet was good but not great. I wasn't sure if they used fresh or canned peppers. I shouldn't need to wonder. The omelet was cooked well and over all I enjoyed it. The home fries left me disappointed, same with Beth. They used a red potato and I love red potato home fries. So I was very excited to eat them until I tasted them. They lacked any real flavor. Almost like the cook didn't try to add some spice. They where cooked well I just wish they tasted better. Oh well The cost with tip was around 25. I would try it again. Maybe a lunch or dinner. Nice place, nice staff, ok food, a little high of price for breakfast at a diner. We literally caught a COCKROACH on our table in the middle of breakfast yesterday morning. It was our second time going there in about 10 years. We didn't like our food before but IHOP was busy and we figured we would give Olympia a second try. We were seated immediately, our waitress was friendly and food was pretty good UNTIL a roach crawled from the wall onto our table and my hubby caught it under an empty glass. We called the waitress over and showed her and then the manager and the waitress told us they would need to "fumigate again." The manager was nice and asked us if we wanted to take anything "to go" but needless to say, we had lost our appetite at that point. Nice people and good service but we will not be back. A solid three star diner! The bathrooms were a little crazy. When I went to the can there was some guy from Swisher(?) pouring toilet cleaning acid in the urinal and panicking when he realized they were metal fixtures and that acid on metal makes lots of acid smoke. The decor was still the same which was awesome. We received a friendly welcome and grabbed a booth in the Back. We both did breakfast for lunch. I had the Santa Fe Omelette with egg whites and rye toast. My husband had steak and eggs. He was extremely nervous to get a steak from a diner but was extremely impressed. I tried to be healthy and not get the hash browns but once I saw my husband's I pretty much demolished his. They truly make you feel at home there. YUM! Went there around 1030 last night with some of my girlfriends. I ordered a sausage, bacon and swiss omelet with a side of sausage, my tablemates ordered a cheese omlette, french toast, and a breakfast sandwich. Mine was OUT OF THIS WORRRRLD. Idk what kind of sausage they use but I want it in my mouth all the time. Stole a piece of my friends bacon, excellent. My friend with the french toast exclaimed OMG REAL FRENCH TOAST, and it was gone in 30 seconds. So I'm pretty sure it was delicious. All and all an excellent experience. read more
