The eel wrapped cleanly and was easy to bite through, while the seaweed on the ikura was tough that I couldn't bite through it cleanly. The rice was fresh but could have had a bit more flavor. The ordering process was also slower than expected since there was only one ordering station, which created a bottleneck. I ordered via kiosk, but the worker at the front was very kind and open to help if I had any questions, and also offered many condiments when handing me the order. There were many filling options to choose from and I went with the 2 onigiri combo for $13. To be honest, I don't see a huge benefit, as many of the filling options under the combo deal are charged extra anyway. I got the Mentaiko and the Hokkaido Shake ($6.50 and $7, so I saved 50 cents) but probably would've chosen another filling if I just bought them individually. Both were larger than regular onigiri and freshly made. The Hokkaido Shake (grilled salmon) wasn't anything too special and the Mentaiko (pollock roe) was definitely my favorite. The roe was very generous and I would order it again if I came back. The combo also came with a complimentary miso soup. Although there are signs signifying that this location is take-out only, they welcome customers to sit in and dine (food will just be packaged to go). At least this address is just takeout the couple times I went, but super easy ordering from the iPad. The onigiri are gigantic compared to anything I've got at like a Mitsuwa or other Japanese market, and it's stuffed to the brim with the meat or whatever you decide to get. You might miss this place since it's inside Daikokuya Annex! I went on a weekday during lunch time and it was empty (luckily). They have you order through a digital kiosk at the front. I had their three-onigiri combo for $19. Note that there are some onigiri options that are an extra $1 or $2. The person helping me out recommended their beef, karage, and their stamina yakiniku (grilled pork with yakiniku). I opted for the beef, grilled salmon, and unagi options. The beef was sweet, reminded me of Korean bulgogi. The grilled salmon was my least favorite. It was a bit dry to my liking, reminding me of canned fish. The unagi was my favorite, covered in the usual unagi sauce, it had good chunks of eel. All onigiris had a hefty amount of rice, so it gets pretty filling. Not sure if it's for all orders, but mine came with some miso soup, which is always a plus when there's no extra cost for it. Came by for a quick snack while exploring LA . It was sorta hard to find because it's actually a pop up in Daikokuya Annex so if you wanna stop by make sure you look for that restaurant!! We ordered the spicy tuna, hokkaido shake, and okaka in a 3 piece combo. It also came with miso soup which was a nice surprise. Each onigiri had a great ratio of rice and filling. When eating each one I never ran out of filling. The quality of the fillings weren't that great though. The tuna and salmon were giving canned fish which would deter me from ordering it again. The okaka had soooooo much bonito though and it was my favorite bite of the meal. It did take a bit for us to take our food so they were making it fresh to order. You are able to dine in but the food will just come in Togo boxes. The restaurant was a little dark and did have an odd smell though so next time I would take the onigiris to eat somewhere else. I got 2 onigiris, a spicy karaage and an eel/unagi. It tasted nice and was a decent size. But it was too oily, I couldn't hold it comfortably while eating. Didn't help that it costed $7-8 or more for a single onigiri. I only got it cause I was already there, if I saw the updated prices when checking out their Yelp I probably wouldn't have gone here. Unless you're here as a tourist, it's not worth it to dine here when there's a lot of good food in LA. This place is the weird in between where it's good but not that good to justify the price. My youngest recently celebrated his 19th birthday and wanted to have dinner here. This was our first time coming to Onigiri Sun. This spot is located in Little Tokyo. We drove around the block for days til we realized there's a few parking garages and free public parking around the corner. After we finally found a place to park, walking is literally just a block or two away and tons of other cool shops to check out. I don't know how I feel about the pricing for the onigiri. 3 for $20 is a little pricier than I expected. It was delicious and I feel that you definitely should try it out for your experience. I really liked that we were also able to order ramen off of the Daikokuya menu and we didn't have to wait in line like everyone else next door. We literally ordered at the kiosk and got our food shortly in less than 15min. The birthday boy said he absolutely loved the onigiri and wants to come back, so we will definitely be back. Me and my husband shared the classic Daikokuya ramen and both my boys ordered the spicy miso. Both ramens were delicious and I would definitely get it again. The ramen egg was pretty good, it tasted a little sweeter than other ramen eggs that I've tried, but it was definitely delicious. We ordered a total of 8 onigiris and I tried the stamina yakiniku, karaage, tuna and the Hokkaido. My favorite from the 4 was definitely the stamina yakiniku and my husband's was the tuna. The onigiri that I purchased were so delicious! The unagi was so flavorful and abundant. It must've had a whole eel in there and the rice was so soft. The sauce wasn't too sweet and had the right amount of savory. The ikura with the salmon flakes was good too and I got another one but can't remember the combination. I got the 3 set but, I'm not sure if this is a common order. It is a little pricey but, it's worth it cause the onigiri is huge! Enough for 2 people if you reckon to split it. Located on the Daikokuya Annex, you can order the onigiri here via kiosks. The dining area is casual with some tables to dine in for a quick bite or you can take your order to go. Let's talk about the onigiri. The rice is warm, the toppings and fillings fresh, and the portions are generous. You can order them individually or in combos of 2 or more (they also have catering!) and the combos come with a miso soup. I also like that you can customize them. Most onigiri have one filling, but with customizations you can add a second filling or topping. The kiosk offers complementary recommendations and those are the ones I chose. Not including the customizations, they have thirteen different onigiri to choose from. They have meat, seafood, vegetarian, and vegan options. I tried a few different ones including the soboro beef (+ add shiitake), stamina yakiniku, mentai mayo cream cheese, Hokkaido shake salmon (+add mentaiko), shiitake, and honey umeboshi. They were equally delicious and unique; I really loved how creamy the mentaiko mayo cream cheese was as that texture was different from the rest. They also have a selection of drinks and some desserts. They have soft drinks, canned teas, and coffee drinks. As a coffee lover, I had to try it. It's actually not coffee, but a brown rice "coffee" drink. I liked the flavor as it resembled a tea latte. It contained soy milk and was sweetened with kuromitsu - a syrup that tasted like maple. I feel that it was ok. The rice does fall off the ball, which beats the purpose of the shape. I felt that both were a tad bit salty, but it was decent pairing with rice. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE SobBeef and Grilled Salmon (Hokkaido shake). It was so good. It's the ones that is on display. I should have gotten that both times. It's perfectly seasoned, not too salty. The toppings are good quality and I can tell that they try not to squish the onigiri too hard so the rice is nice and fluffy. Onigiri Sun is a pop up restaurant located inside the Daikokuya Annex (which is in the storefront next-door to Daikokuya). You walk in, order and pay at the contactless kiosk, and there are plenty of tables/chairs if you're dining in. There is also the option to get your order as takeout. I got the Hokkaido shake and the Stamina yakiniku. Both of the onigiris are very big. I got the 2 onigiri set - so it comes with a miso soup. I highly recommend you eat it there because the nori gets soft pretty quickly. The rice is very high quality - chewy and tasty. I liked the stamina yakiniku more than the hokkaido shake, but both fillings were a little bit underwhelming. The yakiniku didn't have much of a "meat" texture to the filling that I was expecting. The shake was like a shredded salmon with salt - it was salty but tasted a little bare bones. If I'm ever back, I'd love to try the mentaiko! Pop up onigiri restaurant here until November. I never had onigiri made fresh and with so many different toppings. Opted for the soboro beef (ground beef) and stamina yakiniku (pork). Since it is made fresh, it takes maybe about 5 min, which isn't too bad. Grab a seat and eat these and you won't regret it. It's really good eaten hot, with a nice crisp on the seaweed, hot fluffy rice, and hot meats. Stamina yakiniku was really good - although it was a bit salty. Just make sure to eat it with lots of rice and It'll balance out. If you like ginger, you'll like soboro beef. It was sweet and very gingery. It was great to be able to wash it down with a miso soup. If you're getting 2, definitely get the combo because you're basically getting a miso soup for free. Come and try it before the pop up is gone. read more
