Jason and his team are super friendly and always take the time to say hi and make you feel welcome - whether you are eating in or dining out. All of the food, especially the sushi, is extremely fresh, high quality, and picture perfect (literally). The menu is large and includes a wide selection of creative appetizers and rolls. (My go-to special roll is the Victoria Roll and the Martini Salad is a family favorite.) I've been getting doordash from here lately when I can't bother to drive the 2 minutes. While I miss the hospitable staff, my couch works well for the delivery. I have tried so many delicious and creative rolls from Onsen. My current fave is the Spicy Tuna Naruto (it's keto!). I used to be a big fan of Onsen; however, the last few times have been horrible. The sushi rolls were messy and tasteless; the duck tacos were drenched in sauce, the cod was overcooked, and the kani salad was awful. So sad to see a local place doing badly. read more

We arrived at 3:30 Saturday afternoon so we had just missed the lunch special.Luckkily we beat the seating rush by 10 minutes.Sodas,Sake,Sapporo (9 bucks is too much just to put it out there..). Onsen has very fresh, top quality delicious dishes! We have enjoyed many dishes but our favorites are the chirashi, which has super fresh sushi fish along with slices of octopus on a bed of sushi rice. Another favorite for family that appreciates cooked dishes would be the chicken katsu-yummy chicken covered with flaky crunchy panko. Another family favorite also includes bento boxes which comes with a choice of two proteins ~whether it's chicken, salmon, beef.... or if you prefer also sushi/sashimi, you can't go wrong with any of the choices and combinations. The rolls are truly amazing and can be very artistic! So many rolls!! We have tried most of them and our faves would be the Surf, Tuna Lover, 2010, 2012, Spider King, Futomaki, Angry Dragon.....there's more but the list would be too long. What a great Sushi spot! One of the friendliest restaurants that we've ever been too! For appetizers, hubby & myself had the Miso soup, which was great. Larger bowl than most places . The rock shrimp , delish!! They also gave a complimentary tuna steak app that my husband loved! For entrees , I had the Joey Roll and a Spicy Mango shrimp roll. Both so fresh and delicious. Finally made my way into Onsen about a week ago after stalking this place on yelp for a while... cute and cozy spot! We were greeted with high spirits which was cool, set the tone for a good dining experience... they really like to promote their specials by making it sound really good, lol.. the Saury that we ended up ordering, would not have been my first pick. They reminded me of fish bait (shiners) I used to use from my childhood boating days, no thanks... ate it anyway and it was just alright, I'm glad it wasn't fishy Bc I prob would not have been able to get through dinner ... anyway, we ordered the rock shrimp tempura, miso eggplant, tuna lover roll with eel sauce, crazy tuna roll, Godzilla, some pieces of toro, and salmon don.... lately, I'm not super into rolls but the eel sauce was something a friend of mine requested as extra which really amped up the roll for me, loved it. All of the fish was actually SO GOOD. I def eat a lot of sushi and this place had some high quality stuff. Their salmon don was obviously my favorite! I love how silky the salmon was and it was perfect for sharing amongst the table, it came with a large amount of sushi rice too... another memorable dish was the miso eggplant... I love eggplant so I knew immediately I wanted to try this, glad we did; it was awesome.. it came with two broiled and grilled pieces of eggplant with miso sauce for dipping, everyone really liked it... I would have been set with just that and some salmon and toro... Big ups to the ladies that helped us embarrass our friend for his birthday by singing really loud and obnoxiously with us ! I did enjoy my sushi BUT it was also one of the highest priced in my area and I don't feel that it was worth it for the product I received. Located on Montauk hwy in Oakdale, look for the yellow sign with red writing- the "Mama" sign for the strip mall. Should be very easy to find. The service was 50/50 and I'll tell you why. I had to order over the phone which is becoming such an antiquated system for take out. The woman that answered had to keep putting me on hold throughout my order because they only have 1 telephone to take orders from. Other sushi restaurants have online ordering which is so much more convenient for the customer. But when I did go to pick up my order 25 min later everything was bagged and ready to go! And the cashier, hostess & even sushi chefs were very friendly when I entered the restaurant. Also my order was 100% correct. The food was tasty. I ended up ordering a bunch of different rolls and dinners for me & my friends to split. Some of the rolls I could take or leave but others were phenomenal. My favorite was the Crazy Tuna Roll. My least favorite was the Crystal Roll. All and all I'm glad I tried Onsen but I doubt I will be back. It was a one time deal for me. The prices are higher than the competitors and I don't feel like I got more out of it even though paid more. read more

Went here because it was highly recommended by a friend and by all of the reviewers. Having seen it be compared to Kotobuki and Aji I was really excited. The best part was probably the sashimi. It was fresh, but not very flavorful. It has that "sterilized" feel/taste to it where technically there's nothing wrong with it, but it just lacks flavor. The special rolls were the biggest disappointment, especially for the price tag. Whatever the Godzilla roll was fried in was stale feeling/tasting and the rice underneath was gooey. The Victoria roll was just weird... sweet, sugary peanuts with mango sauce + spicy salty tuna was just not my thing, and I would say I like pretty adventurous rolls...it also kept falling apart since the rice paper wasn't fully wrapped around the roll. Although Aji has gone down in quality since we first went there three years ago, the special rolls still blow these out of the water. However, Kotobuki is still the best sushi on LI. We keep searching for other pleasant surprises, but they've all disappointed. :/ Sadness. read more

To be honest, when I first walked in to Onsen I was questioning my decision to give it a try. Not trying to be harsh but the decor reminded me of a DIVEY CHINESE TAKE-OUT joint...You know the ones; with the old carpeting, cheap black metal chairs, small formica tables, and no apparent concern for ambiance. Maybe I should rephrase that and try to be more eloquent: "The restaurant's decor was modest and unassuming...blah, blah, blah..:)" Trying not to judge a book by its cover, I decided to trust in my fellow yelpers and I'm glad I did! Still basking in the glow of my "Sacred Five Star" meal, the highlights were: -Hands Down, the Freshest Sashimi I've had on LI and beyond! We asked the Itamae (sushi chef) to prepare a selection of his fresh fish of the day. We were served: Sweet Shrimp, Baby Yellowtail, King Salmon, Big Eyed Tuna, and Octopus...I have to say, I've never had better! -The waitstaff and chefs seemed genuinely concerned about your dining pleasure! We were served by a number of waitresses working in tandem to deliver food, retrieve used dishes, and kept our beverages flowing. The chef/owner even came to our table personally to introduce himself and brought use one of his artful creations to try at no charge! -Once we placed our order, food seemed to pour from the kitchen and sushi bar like we were the only table of patrons in the restaurant. It reminded me of the dining scene in Beauty and the Beast :) So lets be real, was there anything I didn't love about Onsen? -I Don't Want to be HyperCritical on my Very First Visit but at one point during our meal I got the sneaking suspicion that we were being "Up Sold"...appetizers showed up at our table a few times during our meal that I didn't order but when the check came they were on our bill. A Word of Advice, unless the chef personally brings you a dish and tells you that it is "On The House" send it back or you'll be paying for it -Possibly no fault of the restaurant's, maybe it was just the time of year, but the Kumamoto Oysters were just meh! They weren't rancid or anything but at $16 for a half dozen, they didn't have the fresh, briny taste I was expecting. Onsen, HERE'S MY ADVICE TO YOU: take a small stack of cash out of the register and hire an aspiring interior design student, even for just a couple of days, to give the place a mini makeover. Your restaurant would have a 30 minute wait every night of the week. Better yet: Use a helicopter to pick up this restaurant, move it to NYC, put it in a sultry party dress so it looks like Nobu and this place would blow up overnight....it's that good! read more

Have only been here once for lunch, but easily the best sushi lunch I've ever had. Very fresh fish, really well-prepped rolls that definitely don't skimp. Most lunch special rolls at other places are super tiny with microscopic specks of fish, but not here. Expect your lunch to have great portions and still be 3 rolls for $13. Fast, friendly service -- you definitely cannot come in or leave the restaurant without the entire staff turning toward you and welcoming you or sending you off. Decor leaves something to be desired, but the taste and quality of the rolls easily makes up for that. Just a disclaimer if you think you'll be coming here for a fancy dinner, or trying to impress someone: if they're all about appearances (you shouldn't be hanging with/dating them anyway), they won't like this place. It's in a strip mall and definitely not upscale. But if they prefer what's on the inside (the service, great food), bring 'em on in. From the outside it doesnt look like something you'd randomly pick to try for sushi. Thankfully I was informed from a friend with a specific item to try on my first trip. The Kenny Special, which consists of a piece of tuna wrapped around some crab meat, avacado, and some other things I cant remember. Topped with a light touch of chunky garlic sauce. This app ranks with some of the best Japanese Ive had anywhere in the US. The owner is very outgoing and friendly. Will talk with customers about special items he brought in for the day, as well as serving each customer a small tasting of random menu items immediately upon being seated. Its an excellent gesture and allows people to try new things they may not have thought about checking out. I particularly enjoyed the peppered tuna sushi which comes in very generous portions. Will definitely be keeping this spot in my sushi rotation. They are also opening a new spot in Nesconset sometime over the next month or so. read more

I can't believe that I haven't left a review for Onsen already. I go there at least once a week, especially recently during COVID. Their food is out of this world - the fish is fresh, the sauces are delicious, and the menu is unique. I go through phases, but the Victoria Roll is one of my my personal favorites. The Eric Roll is also delicious. My family goes here every year for Christmas Eve, as part of our Christmas present. We always have a great time, with great service and food.
