Friendly and fast service. Cozy little spot where you can sit on the stools by the window to people watch. I ordered the dubai chocolate sundae, which was $9.99 + tax ($10.88 total). It was a lovely dessert on a hot summer day and a relatively generous portion. The soft serve itself seems to be cashew based, perfectly balanced sweetness. I wouldn't mind having it on its own. I felt that both syrups were too sweet, especially when combined. The chocolate syrup overpowered the pistachio syrup so it ended up tasting more like a chocolate fudge sundae than a dubai chocolate sundae. I'd return to try other flavors though! read more

Every city should have a vegan deli like this one. It's my go-to stop to pick up a delicious sandwich (among other things) before heading to the airport. Snacks, soft serve, and deli offerings: all plant-based and terrific. Tons of items to fill a picnic basket, with an array of vegan cheeses in the cold case. Time to eat there? Get the Reuben. It's a monster, it's messy, and it's best enjoyed seated at one of the bistro tables outside while it's still warm. On the go? Get the Rocko Club. It travels well and the seitan bacon is everything. Recently I tried the mac n cheese with tempeh bacon, walnut parm, and chives. It was creamy, savory, and just the right amount of richness. I would order that again in a heartbeat. Splurge on the soft serve, you won't regret it. The flavors change regularly and if you're like me you swirl two together because you kust can't decide. Bonus, it adjoins with Moo Shoes, my favorite all-vegan accessories store in NYC. Great cruelty-free shoes and handbags! I've been ordering from here for years and I really hate having to write this bad review, but the quality has plummeted fast lately. I ordered a buffalo wrap and it was mostly ranch sauce and feta. Like an absolutely disgusting amount of it. The whole thing was cold and dripping. Ugh. I ordered the Francis and it was uncooked and cold on stale, dried out baguette. It also seems that they changed the type of cheese they use because I tried to cook the sandwich in my oven and that cheese just would not melt. Also with an insane amount of mayonnaise. Dripping everywhere with mayonnaise. I ordered the Marlowe and it was a pile of mess. The bread was basically disintegrated. SO MUCH SAUCE. I ordered the Breakfast Burrito and it was impressively bland. Like they worked hard at figuring out how to make it so bland and useless. Why Orchard? What happened? I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet--since I'm here at least five days a week! For me, this tiny store is Vegan Central; they have things I literally can't find elsewhere. It's tiny because the store next door is MooShoes--world's first non-leather shoe store. They divided a larger space so they could sell vegan shoes and vegan food. As such, they sell both staples and treats--and they always have vegan soft-serve in either a cone or a cup: two flavors of the day--available either separately or as a twist. Their sandwich specials are all named after past and present shop cats who lived in the shoe store--the Edith, the Marlowe, the Bowery. So happy this store is so close to me and is thriving! If you talk extensively about a sandwich hours after eating it then that sandwich is wifey material. After a successful Mercury Lounge concert, my main man Brian drove us back to Jersey. On our trek we reminisced on this vegan chicken and the similar sandwich textures of old. Copenhagen Salmon sliders stood next to Orchard Grocer in high regard. Something about the flaky, buttery, smearable nature of this meat alternative proved satisfying on all cylinders. Fraternal twins Romey and Georgina stand tall, with sauce (Buffalo or BBQ) the primary difference. Scientifically proven, my taste is superior. Our group passed around five different sandwiches and my selection was top rated by the majority. Pickled onion fans unite under the Romey flag, ranch dripping heavy enough to seduce any Midwesterner. Our other members were the aforementioned Georgina, breakfast oriented Bowery, too little mayo Monty, and BLT copycat Rocko. As a sauce savant, my only suggestion would be to lather the Monty a bit thicker with that white condiment that your grandparents love. Barring that small change, hats off to the Thursday AM kitchen crew you beauties. The argument that you want "real meat" will only get you so far in life. They also have a grocery section with some really unique items you can't get at most grocery stores. My first stop after arriving back in NYC for breakfast was here at Orchard Grocer, a vegan grocery store in Chinatown with a robust deli menu. Their menu is filled with traditional and bagel sandwiches - all clearly marked with ingredients and mode of carb. You order with the staff at the front and wait for them to call your order. I went with the Edith ($12), their take on the NY classic bagel & lox, and also ordered a side of their Mac N Cheese ($7). The bagel was massive - I had forgotten how thick these were in NY, but it was very much reminiscent of lox with the marinated carrot. The mac was also good and a hearty side. Everything was great but very heavy, so don't feel like you need to finish it all in one go. Since you're inside a grocery store, there isn't much space to sit and eat. Orchard Grocer is a small vegan deli. the shelves are stocked with a limited variety of vegan-friendly grocery / pantry items. there's a small counter and menu-above where you can order vegan sandos + some sweet eats and vegan soft serve. i've had the sandwiches like the grilled cheese in prior years and those have been good and satisfying (4-star quality). finally, tried the vegan soft serve a few weeks ago and had high hopes...but the soft serve missed the mark in terms of overall quality and flavor. ordered a vanilla soft serve but it barely tasted like vanilla but tasted more like cashews bc that's one of the ingredients in the soft serve, itself. there was not a hint of vanilla flavor, at all, just the cashew flavor. nothing against cashews--they are fine and all but they don't like vanilla. the other issue with the soft serve was that it was more like an icee / slurpee consistency than soft serve smooth. there were small frozen ice chips throughout and tasted less like ice cream...and more like ice cream blended with ice. not terrible, but not very pleasant to eat either. kept thinking maybe it's just the top of my soft serve cup, but i spooned through the soft serve and it was small ice chipped throughout. maybe they should allow you to sample the soft serve beforehand. maybe they should allow you to sample the soft serve beforehand? hopefully this was an off-day for the soft serve...but the soft serve was 2 stars at best. i rounded up the review to 3 stars--to give this place the benefit of doubt. the service was curt, at best. read more

Small in size but impactful on the vegan belly and pantry. A great option for those who can't make it further to a larger grocery store for vegan specialty items. A somewhat remarkable selection of cheeses. I had the rocko sandwich today and it was without a doubt perfectly delicious, the tempeh was cooked well. My favorite place to get delicious and creative vegan sandwiches. Our clinic often orders delivery from here on Sundays and my go to's are either the special of the day or the chicken nuggets. Everything from here travels extremely well and are created with high quality ingredients. The nuggets are super crispy and come with a variety of dipping sauces, my favorite is the bbq. The most recent special I had was a hot agave popcorn chicken sandwich which was absolutely amazing with its sweet and savory contrast. Stopped by and tried the Marlow sandwich which was spot on flavor wise to a pastrami sandwich but the downside was the bread was very soggy around the outside which left the texture to be less than enjoyable. Perhaps if they wrapped the sandwich differently or shook the sauerkraut before putting it on the sandwich there would be less moisture on the bread so it kept the crunch that was held more as you got to the very center of the sandwich. For the Romey the tofu was delicious and the texture was great but the ranch was a bit too much on the sandwich. If they added less it would allow for other flavors to come through better including the Buffalo. Definitely need to grab some napkins if you eat here because these are messy! There are three tables outside and on table inside. Not ideal for groups but could easily grab food and go. The sandwiches are pricey but do have the potential to be really good! read more

Orchard Grocer is an amazing spot for vegan food, both groceries and prepared foods. Their sandwich menu includes vegan takes on lots of classics, like the BEC, reuben, Cubano, and bagels with lox and cream cheese. They also have a daily special that they announce on Instagram, and they always look incredible. From the sandwiches I've tried, my favorite is probably the Bowery with turmeric tofu egg, tempeh bacon, and provolone. I don't know how they get their tofu to mimic an egg like that, but it really works. The Marlowe (reuben) is also tasty. They also have catering options, and since we were having Christmas at home this year, we picked up their pineapple glazed seitan roast, cashew mac and cheese, brussels sprouts, cremini mushroom gravy, and stuffing. The order came well-packaged with clear instructions for how to prepare everything. We were really happy with Christmas dinner, and our only regret is that we forgot to add their latkes on to our order. Ordering from them online during COVID is really simple, and the food is often ready in about 15 minutes for pickup from their sidewalk window. Just note that their block is closed to vehicle traffic as part of the Open Streets program. Can't wait to try more of the menu! read more

I ordered the Monty it was good but I have had better and more interesting sandwiches that were vegan. Maybe I picked one that was too boring. The vanilla soft serve was worth the trip so delicious and such a treat. well I don't live in the city I can see where this would be a great resource for amazing grocery vegan items their selection is very large they also have a fridge and freezer case with lots of unique vegan items. Like lots of places in New York they don't really have a great place for you to sit down they do have some seating outside but it was a little overcrowded and not overly clean. Man, did I want to love this place. I've been following them since they opened and looked longingly at their sandwiches. Today was finally the day to get a few to try! I went around 11:40 and ordered immediately: the daily special (beyond meat, egg cheese on a croissant) and the Cuban sandwich. They seemed really backed up, and I waited over 30+ minutes which was a bit unpleasant but the woman at the window ended up throwing in a couple cookies to compensate, which I definitely appreciated. So back to the sandwiches. The first couple bites of the daily special (3/5) was pretty good, the croissant was fresh but then it just tasted overwhelmingly like beyond meat patty. The Cuban (3.5) had great bread and the pickles were good, but the "meat" was just bland. I even got the spicy mayo and the whole thing lacked depth of flavor. *sigh* I was so excited, but maybe my bar was just too high. We got a vanilla and lavender twist and it was six dollars which I think is fair for vegan ice cream. It is so creamy and the flavor is amazing.
