I went to Original Hems to get a few clothes altered including a beaded dress that I wanted turned into a skirt, a fur vest I wanted turned into a shawl, and a pair of riding pants that I wanted new leather patches on - no easy feat. When I arrived there were lots of customers and the female associate was cool and collected. She smiled as she wrote up my order and accepted my clothes. I was nervous - I wondered if she heard the difficult alteration requests I had. I picked up the items a day later and they look fantastic! Better than I could have imagined! Great pant hemming for $2. The downside is there is usually a wait to drop off your clothes.

You get what you pay for, lesson learned. I am running to my seamstress Elegante Tailoring on Via Fabricante with the pants they messed up. While I was there I brought the pants and the dresses in a lady tried on her formal white dress that she was picking up. It had been done incorrectly, the lining was longer than the dress and luckily they they were going to fix it for her before she went on her trip. I should've turned around and left right then. Thank God I didn't give them expensive and/or new clothing to repair. I brought in 5 pairs of jeans, all of which had frayed at the bottom because I didn't hem when I should have, when they were new. I instructed her to create a new hemline slightly above the highest area of fraying whether that highest point was on the left leg or right. But that's not what happened. On all pants, one leg was longer than the other and on some hems, the front of the leg wasn't the same length as the other side. I wish I could attach pics to show you how the hem itself was sewn. Not on all, but a few, the hem line wasn't sewn straight but followed a curvy line. The owner and the young women tried to convince me it was because the way the jeans were sewn originally. They did offer to repair all the work and said would be ready next day. I was thinking about it, but then she asked if I wanted the new hem to be the same length as the shorter or longer hem. So, I just picked up all the pants and left. Ok, so my new found $2/hem dream place is no longer a reality. From now on, I'll go to the place at Laguna Hills Mall next to Macy's on the same side of the mall near Ruby's Diner. They have very good pricing also, $6/hem. read more

Original Hems! In fact no,not original hems! One would think that a place that calls itself "original hems" would use the original hems,right? Oh they will but only if YOU BRING it up. Some will say it's my fault for not requesting the "original hem" be used. But here's the thing. If I go into a Kentucky Fried Chicken(for sake of argument,before they offered FAKE grilled chicken) and ask for three pieces of chicken, I am expecting fried chicken, not boiled chicken because I didn't ask for it fried! Basically this place is nothing it claims to be at first glance. It's called original hem but only does that if requested. Which BTW,I can go to ANY alterations shop and request the original hem be used because it's not implied that it will be by their name. Same day and while you wait is also advertised in the store. The only sign in the store in fact. Yup,that's right no sign that says "original hem used upon request only " so basically this stupid store that has an identity crisis.it thinks it's a night club ruined two pairs of high end jeans by not using the "original hem " .they should call themselves "original hem will be pinned to your clothes" when I picked up my jeans that's what I saw. The original hem hanging from them by a pin! When I told the worker that it's wrong to call yourself "original hem " and not use it I was told it was my fault for not requesting it! I was a little worried about O.H. because of a few reviews, but I have nothing but good things to say. Yes it's very busy but I didn't feel ignored. The people that work there are quick but efficient. They were helpful and polite. When I picked my items up there was a little wait, but it was at 6pm so that's understandable. Their service seems to be slipping. I've brought in many items for shortening: too often, they leave an additional inch or more on the fittings they've done. So I've brought in pants that I've pinned, specifically 2 inch or whatever, and they're still too long. Some of the clerks are indifferent, even rude. My story is similar to many others below me, so I will keep it somewhat short just to add my less than optimal experience to the list. I agree with Krystle G. - it seems to be hit & miss. Apparently they have some good seamstresses and some not so good. I took 2 identical garments in on 2 different dates to have the exact same work done. The first one came out OK, but the second one was missing a critical stitch that keeps the whole waistband from twisting. I didn't notice this until later. This shortcut they took on the 2nd garment didn't show up until it had been washed a few times. I had asked them to please use the same seamstress that did the work on my first garment. Looks like they refused my request. When I took it back for a warranty adjustment, they ADmitted that they had Omitted the necessary stitching, but wouldn't fix it under warranty because more than 30 days had passed, which was their time limit on their guarantee for alterations. Really?? So why doesn't someone TELL the customer anout this very short 30-day time limit, huh? I have had many items altered there and no one has EVER mentioned this to me. I read my receipt, including the 1-point type on the reverse side that cannot be read without a magnifying glass (I keep one in my car), and guess what? No mention of this 30-day thing anywhere! I looked around the lobby for some signage regarding this and guess what? NOTHING! The attendant was courteous enough, and took my garment back to the manager for a decision. She came back and said they would fix THEIR WORK for HALF of the amount I had originally paid. It was not a huge amount of money, so I agreed, but I let them know I felt it was unfair. Bottom line is these guys will do simple alterations for really low (I mean REALLY low) prices, but you must pay them UP FRONT for the work. That would be OK if you could rely on them to do consistent and just adequate work. Apparently you cannot. I will probably continue to use them for very simple things like hems, minor repairs etc. But for anything of an advanced or complex nature, I will go back to my very excellent (but not so cheap) Tailor: Amms Tailoring in Lake Forest, 1-mile north on the other side of the I5 Freeway on the north side of Lake Forest Drive. Just got my bridesmaid dress hemmed there. I took it in midday on a Tuesday which meant it wasn't too crowded (only one person ahead of me) which meant it didn't take very long for me to get helped so I definitely recommend going during that time if possible. The girl who helped me was very nice and I liked the work they did. They lost one star for two reasons. I took my dress here because I had heard that it's pretty inexpensive but it cost me $65 just to shorten my dress a little bit. That to me doesn't scream inexpensive but I was already there and my dress had already been marked up so I just decided to suck it up and pay that much. Also, when I was I there, there was an extremely upset woman who was huffing and puffing about them ruining her dress and that she wanted to speak to the manager etc. and the other employee who was helping her could barely speak English and I don't think was fully understanding the upset woman which made it very uncomfortable as a bystander. Although I didn't agree with how the customer was handling things, I also feel like another employee who could better understand her should've stepped up and helped this customer out so that myself and the other customers didn't feel so uncomfortable with a woman yelling about her dress being ruined. People really get bent out of shape when it comes to customer service. I see a bunch of messages about how the 2 "Latina" or "Hispanic" girls up front are not greeting you with a smile and asking how was your day and licking your a**. Get over it! They're very busy and they want to get you in and out as quickly as they can. Anyone who owns or operates a small business can relate. I've been there twice and I plan to go back with any tailoring needs that I may have in the future. When I went in, they took my pants, did their measurements, told me when to pick them up and how much it would cost. Whether they smile or treat me like I'm something special, I couldn't care less. What I care about is 1) how good is the quality of their work (it's as good as any!), 2) how much did they charge (less than anyone else!), and 3) did they complete the work in a timely fashion (yes they did). For that, they get 5 stars. If you're one of those who needs them to powder your cornhole while you wait, well then you should probably go somewhere else where they'll do that for you. read more

affordable and amazing. this place does a great job at tapering. they messed up on one of the seems on like 10 pairs of pants i brought in, and when i showed them they refunded me and fixed it on the spot. i didn't ask for a refund and was expecting to wait until the next day, but it was great. pretty fast and they're nice. i would have given it 5 stars but one time it took 3 days for tailoring 3 shirts. read more

My wife and I saw their commercial on TV and decided to give them a try. What a mistake! We decided to try out their $2 hem offer and took several pairs of pants and had to pay upfront. That should have been a warning to us. A few days later, we picked up the pants, took them home, hung them up and didn't give them a second thought. A couple of weeks later when we tried on the pants, we discovered they were all way too long (and not at all what we had agreed to at the fitting). A few days after that, we took the tagged pants (and receipt) back to the Original Hems Studio in Laguna Hills, and explained to an older male employee what had happened and that we expected the store to make it right. He told us the pants hemming took place too long ago (huh?) and that he would need to charge us again to re-hem the pants. When we complained, he asked us how could we expect them to re-hem pants for free, when they only charged us $2 each to begin with? It was their mistake afterall ! My wife then told him that he just lost our business. As he turned his back on us and walked away, he mumbled that he didn't need our $2 hem business. A friend of mine was telling me she had found a good tailoring place , now and days its so hard to find a good place with decent prices . I thought i'd give this place a shot why not . At first it was so hard to find because original hems studio doesn't look like any ordinary tailoring shop i was impressed on how it looked inside it felt like i was at a club or something made me feel twenty again ! When I went it didn't look busy but this was a couple of days ago since i went in about almost a week & a half ago. Well as soon as i walked in the door i had a young lady come to me personally and asked if she can help me, i was a bit unsure if i wanted to get my clothes tailored at a place ive never been at so i asked a few questions . She was nice enough to make me feel i was in good hands . I walked out to grab my clothes from my car and she walked me inside a dressing room. She then pinned my clothes and i was curious to know what she was doing working at such a young age . She then explained she was a full time student and worked at the same time At checkout i told her id go back and tell people about this place. Such good vibes in there .
