Good affordable option for large-portion family-style Chinese food in Chicago Chinatown.

I'm a fan of this place and have been coming here since I was little. This isn't the place to come to for the ambiance as I'll admit it's hidden on a dirty side street and the restaurant tends to be loud and has a smoking section. But they have the best jellyfish, walnut shrimp, and marinated pork dishes in Chinatown. Real authentic chinese food, open late, lively atmosphere. Tends to cater to chinese customers as most of there staff speak limited English. I usually only go with people who speaks fluent chinese and knows the right dishes to get. read more

Favorite authentic Chinese restaurant! Our usual dishes are salt and pepper silky tofu, eggplant casserole, lemon chicken and satay beef.

We are very discerning about Chinese food and spent a good half hour debating where to eat in china town tonight. We both felt good about this place and we weren't disappointed. Hundred flavored shrimp (peeled), clams in black bean sauce and Szechuan green beans were really wonderful. Ask for the chili oil, it's great. read more

this plave was vibrant and fun--a Great addition to my Chinatown BYOB rotation. I was there with my partner--but looked like a great place for a larger group--many people seemed to be enjoying themselves in the round "lazy susan" tables. Large portions of hot food served fast---it s a fun place to share family style and just have a food (and no corkage fee wine) frenzy!! I used to like this place a lot but lately every time I went there, things were always disappointed me especially the service. I understand that some servers can not speak English well but the way they treat customers are very poor. Food are not bad but not very delicious enough to bring me back there. Now, there are tons of places in China Town that serve yummy food and plus a nice and friendly service. read more

If I could, I want give this place any stars. The food was over priced and bland and there was a five dollar delivery charge. I wouldn't recommend getting food from the original triple crown restaurant. Going off of other reviews I've read, the real original triple crown moved and is across the street and has better food. read more

Go here for the food not the service. This was some of the best Chinese food I have ever had!! It was the worst service I have ever had. I worked in the service in industry so as a rule I will always always tip 18-20%. Last night I left Less then 10%. Our server was Sandy, she was mean, rude left our table unattended. First off a little history about this restaurant. Originally, it was called Triple Crown, most of the staff, if I recalled are still there, but a few have left such as their hostess (who is taking care her sick family member, and she is planning to travel to China, and she was a former hostess at the big Three Happiness). But with time, a few more might leave, depending on how well they do without the Triple Crown name. From what I know, there was a family struggle within Triple Crown, and one side of the family won, which they open Triple Crown on Wentworth (taking over the defunct Lobster King Restaurant, which was originally Royal Pacific Restaurant back in the 70's) to compete against one another, and later losing their lease and eventually being bought out by the employee of the defunct restaurant. As in most restaurant business now days in Chinatown, there is no staff loyalty, like in the 80's, which I saw in Chiam, King Wah, Lung Fung, Three Happiness to name a few. The current owner basically hired new employee for the new restaurant on Wentworth, and simply let go the original staff on 22nd, if any did manage to move over to the new restaurant. The infighting also include losing their take-out Triple Crown Restaurant on Halsted St. The new Triple Crown on Wentworth is suppose to be a refiner version or similar to the one at Westmont, with smaller size dishes, dimsum, etc. And the Triple Crown on 22nd is basically a family style restaurant, catering mostly to the local, some tourist, and visiting guests to Chinatown, emphasizing large family portion, and the style of cooking back in the 70s-80s. My personal impression before the family infighting with Triple Crown, the restaurant was lively, always pack in the evening (especially weekend), nice food, large portion to be exact, great for more just one person to share. After the restaurant was bought out by the staff, the food was exactly the same, and the menu did say Original Triple Crown, which I did find it a bit funny, even if the current Triple Crown did not find it so. Now, the restaurant is under another new management, the food portion is a little smaller now, almost the same food, not as it was in early days. My favorite dish at one time at this place is their fry smelted fish, Japanese style tofu with mushroom, and their Chow Mein noodle. I might go back once the dust is settle. read more

went to triple crown for a late date night. The food was good and the portion sizes are decent. Enough to share... Not good for a first date but for seasoned daters it should be ok... customer service wasnt that bad. but it was a little busy which is understandable, so go with a talker! read more

Worst experience ever. Waited almost an hour for a table for Dim Sum and then this rude couple came in and just sat down at the table that was finally cleared for us. When we told the wait staff and the management, they did nothing. They didn't even tell the rude couple that they had to wait their turn for a table. What poor management! Then they tried to stuff our group into a table for two. There was no service...really. The dim sum carts didn't make its way around the dining room. It turn out that the service was so slow that customers were standing by the kitchen doors and when the carts came out, the customers were just grabbing the dishes off the carts. Price was too expensive for absolutely no service and the dim sum was just average. Not worth the aggravation. Will never come here again! Would give it zero stars if possible. read more

First off, I want to give this place NO stars. But, my Singapore Rice Noodles was tasty. This was by far the worst restaurant experience I have ever witnessed! I have worked in the restaurant biz for 15 years now and I have been in the weeds many a time. This restaurant couldn't find its way out the weeds with a team of machetes and a GPS. We went there on Chinese New Year, expecting to be busy and have a wait. That wasn't really the issue. The issue was waiting 20 minutes for the complimentary tea. Watching all of the tables around us warming themselves on their tea but us sipping on our water, knowing early that there was no way we going to get refills on our water. When we placed the order, 3 soups, mongolian beef and a very delicious and authentic sounding salty fish and pork belly dish. The server informed me that its a 20 minute wait for the pork belly dish. Alright I said, I'll take the Singapore Rice Noodles. Off she runs to the next table. 30 minutes later we get the mongolian beef dish. No soup for us! 10 minutes later we manage to wave down somebody, anybody and inform them that we hadn't received the soups or the other entree. Much confusion on their part, server comes over and looks bewildered and lost. We explain skip the soup and just bring out the other entree. 10 minutes later, 2 of the 3 soups arrive. Ok great, where is the other one? 5 minutes later the other soup shows. 15 minutes after that my entree finally shows. The server warns me about a 20 minute wait for a dish and I wait an hour for a standard Chinese dish? I decide there is no way I am waiting for a server to bring a bill, so I venture up to pay and am very rudely ignored by a manager. Matter of fact she tells me to wait so she can speak to somebody that just walked up in front of me! Then promptly ignores me again. I tell her that I don't really have to pay I can just walk out at this point! I tell her that I am crazy to even be standing here right now! Suddenly a bill appears, soups on there that I told to be cancelled! As I left I told all 15 people waiting to be seated to run while they can! read more

We think this is an all around very good Chinese restaurant. We have going to it over 30 years. It is open until 2 am. It caters to a large Chinese clientele. And it has a wide selection of seafood dishes along with dishes that seem genuinely Chinese. read more

This is by far the single most ridiculous delivery experience I've had. First of all, let me say that the food (taste) is not bad but certainly not worth the price. This, however, is why they got 1 star. I ordered sesame chicken, 100 flavor chicken, and chicken fried rice. There was a bone in my sesame chicken, fine...this happens in cheap Chinese food sometimes (though this place wasn't THAT cheap). Then, I find some unidentifiable object in my rice. I think it may have been burnt mutilated fish based on color and texture but I was certainly not going to put it in my mouth to find out. Furthermore, not everyone in my party eats fish (if that's what it was) so I decided to call for a refund. The lady over the phone was having a hard time understanding my request, so I asked for a manager. She said the manager wouldn't be in for another 2 days. After some talking, she puts someone else on the phone who spoke slightly better English. This man proceeded to tell me that if I want a refund, I would have to bring the food back. I told them I would be happy to give it to their driver if he came to get it since this was a delivery in the first place. He then told me I would have to pay for the driver to go back out and get it. I asked to speak to his boss (who was apparently not the manager), but he told me his boss didn't speak English so I couldn't. This whole process took about 15 minutes, and at the end they just hung up on me. Well, I told them I was going to leave a bad review so here it is. This was the best restaurant in Chinatown!It's service was great and the food was so delicious. The price was so payable that I ate their twice in one day. The food was huge for a small price to pay. First of all, if you don't know what "real" Chinese food is, then you won't like this place. Second of all, if you like "Americanized" Chinese food, then you should go to the Triple Crown restaurant on the main Chinatown street. For those who like free stuff, they give you free soup and dessert. It's missing a star because all they play on their TVs are 1980s Chinese shows...please play some new stuff =o) read more

This restaurant is unbelievable, we came here to eat a few times out of the year. The last time we came here which was on Sat the 17th of May after we finished eat and paid the bill, we left the tips in cash. When we were leaving out of the door, one of the servers who is there all the time he went and came up to me and asked a higher amount of a tip. I was shock at this situation and I told him to talk to my husband. This guy stood in front of the door and demanded more of the tips from my husband. We are going to report this to attorney general's office because this is unacceptable. These business owner are racist and only cater to their own kind. Be ware if u visit this restaurant. read more

Quality of food from this restaurant has gone down. We got takeout fron them and every single dish was oily. The gravy of every dish was liquidy and did not feel like gravy at all. Then to top it off, they did not include the side order of soup or the sweet soup which we normally get with the take out orders. We've ordered from them for as long as We could remember and they've always always included it. We called in asking to see if they forgot it this time, but what we got was a bunch of b.s. The first person who answered the phone said the person who answers phones wasnt here today, so that's why we didnt get it. WTH??? What does that have to do with the phone person? Then she said that we needed to ask for it if we wanted it. WTH??? We've never had to ask...it was always included! So you pay for a meal...but if you don't ask for what is normally included, then we don't get it? Uh huh. So now we talk to the owner and he gives us the b.s that they haven't included the soups in like 10 years which is a blatant lie cuz we ordered just a couple of weeks ago and everything was included! Thing is, we really don't care all that much for the soups, but it's the principle of it all! If they told us that there was a change in policy the last couple of weeks, we'd be like ok. Understood. But to blame it on someone and then later tell us a lie? Please. With the decline in quality of food, trust me, we won't be coming anymore. read more

Going to TC is where I get my Chinese food fix. This is not an egg foo yung or shrimp fried rice type of joint, but a good authentic Chinese seafood place. I brought my caucasian coworker and his wife to TC, but I ordered all the food. They hated squid, but I stll ordered the salt/ pepper squid anyway, his wife and him ate the whole order before the end of the night. Some other dishes I always order are the black bean clams, honey/ walnut shrimp, steamed oysters, Chinese style fried chicken, but the plain steamed chicken with the ginger scallion sauce is also very good. You can't go worng with the thick rice noodles with beef either. They have live lobsters, crabs, and fish in tanks that you can pick out for dinner at the old TC, but I have not been to the new one yet. Found out about this place from some riding friends last year and I have not gone anywhere else in chinatown since, everything here is amazing, especially the mongolian beef, and anything salt and pepper! I have literally driven down to triplecrown from the burbs late night just to pick up food, and with their cheaper late night menu(10pm-2am) it is easy to overspend since you want to try everything! If you are looking for a mountain of mediocre-to-okay food for a small amount of money, then you've found the right place. There is sub-zero ambiance: a TV was playing Chinese soaps while we were eating. As for the food, I've had much better General Tso's chicken. As for the fried crispy noodles with chicken, it was so bland it was left uneaten. There was one exception. The chicken with mixed vegetables was good to very good. And the soups were good but not great. Definitely not a China town star. read more

Easily the most rancid Chinese food I've had since living in Chicago. Everything was covered in some sort of gelatinous ooze. I was drunk and it still didn't taste good. This place reminded me of one of those Chinese restaurants located out in the sticks...the one that gets in the local weekly newspaper after its owner gets caught serving rats and seagulls. read more

The food is really good here. I have been a frequent customer here for many years. However, it's really inconsistent. Sometimes the food is amazing, sometimes it's bland, and sometimes its too salty or the flavor is too strong. My complaint, however, is the horrible service, which has been getting worse over the years. There were many times were the restaurant is not even busy and we had to flag a waiter down after waiting for over 20 minutes even though they are standing around chatting. Went here last night with wife and son per recommendation from a friend (who is Chinese). The outside of the restaurant threw me off as you have to walk up some stairs and I wasn't sure if I was at the right place as it was kind of dark at the entrance. We were seated quickly and we decided to get a family for 4 dinner which was a good deal. The soup they give you at the start (chicken and pork broth) was not good so we skipped that. The salt and pepper shrimp was decent. The garlic lobster also decent. The spare ribs dish and tofu with vegetables was pretty good. Service on the other hand was ok. I will be frank, we are not Chinese. The server never came by after they brought us our food. I didn't think anything of it as the food was decent. Little did I know, my friend told me they were supposed to give a taro desert at the end of our meal. We did not get that or know that we should have gotten that. We just got fortune cookies after our meal. My friend said that it's probably because you are not Chinese (He is Chinese by the way). All in all, food was decent and better then most places in Chinatown, however, knowing that the servers treat non-Chinese customers differently is not my cup of tea. Well, I do love the food here and it's a great lunch spot for our company, but we ordered today and after finding it impossible to place an order on the phone myself, and having to track down a Chinese speaking coworker, I was a little frustrated. No big deal though, we got the food ordered. 5 Lunch specials (less than $5 each) and that's it. The food came and the total was $40... What?? They ended up giving us the wrong size of EVERYTHING we ordered, instead of the lunch specials that we very specifically ordered. They also left out an order of noodles. Cool. Probably won't go here anymore. It's a shame because the food is soooo tasty. EDIT: We called them to try and resolve this issue by something like giving us store credit of the difference between what we paid and what was advertised. Their response was that they charged us the right amount, but their prices have changed! The prices went up about 40% and their online menu didn't reflect it?? Our company is definitely done with triple crown. read more
