Osaka Steak and Sushi is a new Japanese steakhouse and sushi restaurant that opened April 2015 on Buford Highway in Cumming. This Buford Highway (State Route 20) is not to be confused with the Buford Highway in Fulton, DeKalb, and Gwinnett counties (State Route 13). This is Osaka's second location. It's in the same shopping center as Publix (Cruse Marketplace). The original is located on Georgia 400 in Dawsonville near the North Georgia Premium Outlets. Due to the popularity of the first location, the owners decided to open this second location to be closer to those customers who live further south in Forsyth County and the surrounding area. All-around, this is a pretty solid Japanese restaurant, especially in these neck of the woods. It's more than a just a Japanese steakhouse. The sushi menu is vast (the sushi bar stocks an above-average selection of fish and seafood) and there is an assortment of non-hibachi and non-sushi items including noodles (udon, yakisoba), bento boxes, terikyaki, katsu (breaded and fried meat cutlets), tempura, and desserts. The alcoholic beverage selection is extensive as well with beer, wine, sake, Japanese plum wine, and mixed drinks like martinis, mojitos, margaritas, daiquiris, and various other cocktails. The sum of offerings is ambitious, but the kitchen and bar execute and the quality of food and drink is good. Osaka has 10 hibachi grills that can seat a total of about 100 guests. If you're not ordering hibachi or don't like the smoke, there's non-hibachi seating (both indoor and outdoor) too. Total capacity is about 150. Osaka has taken over the space formerly occupied by Ninja Steakhouse. The owners put a lot of money and effort into renovating the space. It looks nice and feels clean, sparkly, and new. Unlike a traditional Japanese steakhouse such as Benihana, Osaka feels more modern, open, and stylish. The atmosphere is casual and the talented hibachi chefs make things fun. This is a great place for birthdays, special occasions, and group outings. Expect to spend roughly $5-12 each for most salads and appetizers, $8-23 each for hibachi entrees, $10-14 each for noodles, $8-12 per rice plate, $10-12 per bento box, $8-24 per tempura entree, and $3-6 per dessert. There are a staggering 50 different kinds of sushi rolls, priced between $6-15 per roll, plus hand rolls, chirashi sushi (assorted sashimi over rice), and over 20 different kinds of nigiri and sashimi. Lunch specials are available. I've had both the steak and sushi here and can't say I've had a bad thing. On the steak side, I tried the "N/Y Steak" solo plate with fried rice and mixed vegetables. I thought this entree was delicious. While I asked for my steak to be cooked medium-rare, it actually came out at more of a medium. It turned out fine though, because the meat was still tender and juicy to my liking. The steak was cut into bite-sized pieces and came with two dipping sauces. The steak was flavorful enough on its own to where I thought the sauces weren't needed. The mixed veggies consisted of broccoli, onions, mushrooms, and zucchini. The fried rice had carrots and corn in it and may have been the best part of the plate. The rice was addictively tasty. On the sushi side, I've tried the following rolls and nigiri: Rolls: * Sushi Fever - soft shell crab, shrimp tempura, avocado topped w/ tuna, salmon, white tuna, & spicy garlic ponzu * Osaka Roll - tuna, salmon, yellowtail, fish cake, avocado wrapped in cucumber, topped w/ ponzu * Sexy & The City - ahi tuna, cream cheese, avocado topped w/ ahi tuna, mango, avocado, eel sauce * White Tiger - spicy tuna, avocado, cream cheese topped w/ chopped scallop, fish cake, spicy mayo, eel sauce Nigiri: Conch, eel, kuro tobiko (black roe), mackerel, octopus, salmon, scallop, smelt roe, surf clam, tuna, escolar, yellowtail, and otoro (fatty tuna belly). While I typically prefer nigiri and sashimi over rolls, the rolls were actually quite tasty. The fish was fresh and the rolls were filling. Sushi Fever was a special when I had it. It was advertised on a chalkboard next to the sushi bar. The Osaka Roll is terrific if you want a lighter, more refreshing sushi roll. It's wrapped in cucumber instead of seaweed and rice. The White Tiger roll got its name because the outside of the roll resembles the striped fur of a white tiger. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the nigiri, not only in the quality of the fish, but in the quality of preparation. The sushi chefs use big, thick, succulent slices of nigiri. They are generous with their cuts. The nigiri is reasonably priced at $2-3 per piece. Osaka even had otoro, which is a special cut of tuna belly, for only $7 a piece. A lot of sushi restaurants in Atlanta charge over $10 for a piece. Other recommendations: * Agedashi Tofu - lightly breaded fried tofu served w/ tempura sauce, bonito * Tuna Tataki - thin slices of seared tuna served w/ cucumber, avocado, orange tobiko, & ponzu Service is excellent.

Came for my daughter's 19th birthday diner with the family. We had been here a week before for just he sushi and it was okay. Not bad but definitely not the best. We tried the hibachi side this time because my daughter wanted hibachi for her birthday. The servers are very nice but he service is horrible. My husband went to he bar to pick up our drinks after 10 minutes because our server was under age and couldn't actually bring us our drinks. It's extremely slow and the chef had zero personality. Our meals were pretty skimp for the cost. It's bad when your kids say this too! My husband and I got the shrimp and scallops and we got five shrimp and four scallops. The shrimp were tiny and scallops had a very fishy taste to them that I gave some shrimp and my three scallops to my husband because he was still hungry. They give a decent amount of rice but it was pretty bland. Even the yum yum sauce couldn't help this rice. This is a good place if you want hibachi but don't want to spend a fortune but don't expect good food. We were hoping to have a good sushi and hibachi place near our home. We sat. We ordered. We ate. We paid (after waiting 120 mins). We left. And not returning.

Always great sushi when I come here, consistently fresh. Yellowtail sashimi, Jade Roll, and Empress Rolls light rice are my favorites. They also have hibachi.

One of the best in Cumming. We have had sushi and takeouts from this place before. This the me we tried Hibachi. Food has been consistently good. We tried chicken, shrimp, Salmon and Scallops, everything hit the spot. Their hot chili paste is not really that hot, do if you like spicy food ask for Sriracha instead. And above all $1 sake is hard to beat

Good quick spot for some sushi and hibachi. Really nice bar and sushi bar with tvs and they had espn on to watch sports. We ordered the jade and white tiger rolls along with miso soup, they were pretty good but not the best we've had in terms of originality, tasting and plating. The miso soup was just okay with nothing new to offer. The staff was very friendly and offered suggestions. If in area, we may try again and perhaps give the hibachi a try.

Zombie #1. No personality here. And he's the energetic one!

This is our second time here and probably our last. Service: very slow and unorganized. We ordered a beer and glass of wine. After 10 minutes I had to go to the bar to get our order. Unfortunately they messed that up and had to correct it. Our hibachi chef had the personality of a zombie. He went through the motions and then departed. Upon looking around, all of the chefs had the same personality. I think they were auditioning for The Walking Dead. Food: the miso soup was like warm. I think it had been sitting for too long. I ordered the shrimp and scallops with fried rice and veggies. The rice came off the grill first. What a disappointment. It was bland and nothing more than rice with a little egg. I did see one corn kernel, all lonesome. The veggies were decent. But put enough yum yum sauce on a shoe and one would eat it. The shrimp were over cooked and the scallops were as well. Both came from the freezer as they had the flavor of cardboard. I washed all this down with the beer that I had to capture from the bar. We got the check, we waited...we waited...we waited...I flagged down a waiter from another table...We paid, we left. We won't be back.

    Sushi and sashimi dinner combo!

This place can work on their service a little better. Food was OK. Hibachi can be better. Sort of a run down place.

Our waiter took our orders which turned out to be incorrect, but, thankfully our chef Matthew double checked and everything was sorted properly. We had appetizers first, salad and soup followed by the main entrees. I wishhhh I had gotta the fried rice because it was stupendous! Highly recommend! I ordered the salmon and chicken which was excellent. They're very attentive to any allergies if you note so they can be sure to separate when certain food groups are cooked. The noise level was relatively low, we were able to talk clearly for the most part! Lots of cheering and clapping on our end. Thank you Matthew for giving out wonderful service!

This most recent time we went it was four of us and about a 30 min wait without a reservation. They have a bar area which is nice to sit at to help kill some time, and you can even sit and eat there if you don't want the full hibachi grill experience. They also have a dedicated sushi bar, and regular table dining. We have actually sat at the bar a couple of times and it was great, and I'd love to sit at the sushi bar sometime. We were seated with a huge company party this time at the hibachi grill, and it was a little tight but it worked out. Our chef was hilarious and incredible as always, and the food was DIVINE. You get to pick a protein combo for hibachi and my go-to is chicken and shrimp, but they have plenty of other options like filet, scallops, etc. They offer huge portions and I always end up taking some to-go for a second meal. What's cool about Kani House is ice cream is included with the meal, so they always offer it complimentary at the end of the experience but I never have enough room in my belly for dessert. I will definitely be back again soon!

I've lived in Cumming since 2021 but never thought there would be a steakhouse there like this one! We were able to get a table for the 8 of us on the morning of, and was very excited since it was only a 7 mile drive from Windermere. Parking is a breeze, it's on the side of a strip mall on the corner of Meadow and Atlanta Hwy. It's beautiful inside. Lights were dimmed but not so much you can't see the menu or your fellow diners. Christopher was our server and he was really helpful, thorough, pleasant and absolutely friendly. My brother basically took stock of the menu and I ordered a cocktail to start. A big bottle of wine, and we were off! First off, the rolls made in house were so spectacular that I almost asked for more, even though I knew we were in for a great meal. Sea salt on top, hefty without being dense, with or without butter just delightful. Apps: both the GA and the Wedge salad to share, along with the grilled octopus and mussels. My nieces are 7 and 13, my nephew is 11 and they basically ate every last bit of the mussels. Back when I was 11 all I wanted was pizza and burgers. All of the apps were so flavorful- the mussel broth had garlic and nduja which gave it a nice kick. My regret was that I didn't take pics of these. Apologies! Entrees: most of the table got steak, whether it was filet, the American Wagyu, the ribeye. My brother ordered the chicken, I ordered the lobster bucatini and two scallops on the side. My niece had the gnocchi side as her entree. Sides: gnocchi with shittaki mushrooms, duck fat fried potatoes, grits, and asparagus. The gnocchi is a MUST, but the grits and others were close behind. For dessert: chocolate soufflé, bread pudding made in house with ice cream, a cappuccino creme brûlée, and for their birthdays a small individual passion fruit panna cotta for my parents. What a beautiful touch. I would put this place in with all the known steakhouses, service was unmatched, food was excellent and we didn't have to drive 35 miles to Buckhead or Midtown. Hats off to the team here, from the hostess who checked in on us, our server Christopher, to the team in the kitchen. I walked by the bar to use the restroom and it had no empty seats. This would be a place I'd feel comfortable coming alone to treat myself. Support small businesses!

We were given a gift certificate by our realtor last year and waited for a special occasion since we were told it is pricey. Valentines seemed like the perfect time and it was! Made reservations several weeks before opting for the 13th of February and at 5 pm in hopes of avoiding the crowd. It worked. We arrived and were seated promptly in what they call the Al Capone booth which was for two and tucked towards the back wall which was cozy and private except much later the table across from us which looks out toward the table we were at, 4 people were seated. It wasn't a big deal as they were busy talking with their group. Our waiter was Jason (I hope I'm remembering his name correctly) and he told us he was fairly new. Great waiter, engaging with us, gave us excellent tips on the food choices, how things were cooked especially the steaks, which cuts would be best for us according to our tastes, very attentive our entire meal, didn't rush us through our meal and told us what to expect with the dishes we chose. Now we share our meals and opted for a 16 oz steak which my husband finished his half and I brought 1/2 of my 1/2 home along with much of our side dishes. I guess that means each side comes with a lot of food. We ordered the sweet potatoes, which was incredibly delicious, nice and soft on the inside and a bit crunchy on the outside. They have a caramel flavor bc of caramelized. Oh sooo scrumptious. The asparagus were nice a large and once again the flavor on them were delish!! Our steak came out on a plate by itself bc Jason said the chef likes to show the beauty of it. I agree, simple, but the steak on its own looked grand. It was cooked to perfection, so juicy and packed with flavor. It melted in our mouth. Worth every cent. The mushrooms along with the sauce flavor we chose were a perfect combo with our steak. The steak on its own was amazing but the mushrooms were delicious with the steak. The incredible rolls they serve are to die for. Light, fluffy and down right a perfect accompaniment to our dinner. My husband enjoyed his wine choice with Jason's recommendation. I had Jason take back my Lemon Drop Martini because it wasn't to my taste, just a bit boozier than I enjoy. The second time was much better. The manager Peril came to our table and introduced himself. Told us about the history of his restaurant and was a kind man. We talked with him about being from CA. Also how his restaurant being located in an area you'd never imagine having such a great restaurant would be was awesome. It's in this small strip mall right off Meadow Drive amongst other small shops. Not very grand looking on the outside but very nice and lovely inside. Very intimate feeling in the booths. I did notice they have a small bar area which was packed as well as small tables in the area. The parking lot is not very large with some handicap parking spots. Quite large inside with outdoor seating within a tent covered area with windows. We definitely will visit again, on another special occasion. Everything and everyone was GREAT and ever so tasty.
