So cozy it may as well have been Oscar's living room. Chicken and waffles were a daunting task, but a rewarding one. Overall a nice, cozy experience for brunch.

We just had another amazing dinner at Oscar's Place on Hudson St in the West Village. The food is excellent and the service top notch. Best Beef Stew and Fish and Chips you'll ever have. The Trout Almondine is superb. Great mussels too! Oscar's is exactly the perfect little restaurant you'd want right around the corner in Greenwich Village. Warm and cozy (especially in the wintertime) it's like dining in your grandmother's kitchen. Say "hello" to Trinidad and Crispin when you go!

    Fish n' chips

This place felt like a no-frills fish n' chip shop that one could come across in London (or somewhere in Belgium for that matter!). It's a very small, but cozy restaurant, and one could tell that those that own it care about the space and how well organized, clean, and put together it is. The sense of minimalism and European food brands (ex. malt vinegars) add charm to the simple setting giving off a non-pretentious, relaxed, ambience. The waiter was friendly and efficient. Now for the most important part: the food! The fish n' chips are deliciously superb. The cod tasted fresh. The batter was light, crispy, and spiced well. What was noteworthy was the tartar sauce. It has a unique tang to it that made the fish n' chips refreshing despite the fact that it's deep-fried. Maybe it was a usage of lime and celery? The chips were nice and crispy, but you could definitely taste the potato still. I ate the whole plate. A pleasant experience. I know where I'll go to get my fish n' chips next time I'm in Manhattan.

BEST SALMON BURGER IN THE CITY. Place is really tiny but the food and staff are great. Everyone is so friendly, it feels like you're walking into their home. The salmon burger is always fresh! Not sure what's in that sauce but I can eat this everyday. Served with the crispiest French fries. They give complimentary bread and butter to start and the bread is so fluffy and toasted perfectly. Love love love!

Glorious fish & chips. Thought I couldn't finish such a generous portion, but I did!

Appearances can be deceptive. This tiny (16 seats) place isn't real pretty, but boy can they cook! The friendly staff bring masterful fish & chips - a full beautiful fillet with paper thin coating, perfectly cooked. Fries that were cut onsite, not from a bag. Butternut squash soup generously served and scrumptious. Surprising menu options from their English/Belgian background, like a steak and kidney dish, bangers and mash, and tarte tatin (simple but exacting as to technique). My friend's halibut was perfect, the lovely sauce kissed with garlic. My only wish (aside from them moving next door to me) is brighter lighting which this lovely food deserves. And the prices are actually reasonable!

Met a friend in the neighborhood for brunch. We had made reservations online but if you go early enough, or maybe get lucky, you won't need them. During the summer they had outdoor seating. The dining area is tight, with only a few tables inside and essentially in the kitchen. The server was helpful, gave recommendations for different options and kept checking in on us. Opted for the eggs cocotte for something lighter and the mash of the day, which I believe had roasted leeks. Eggs were cooked well, salad was a nice contrast, and rich mash. With a day filled with activities ahead of me, it took every bit of will power to not order a full english. But next time, I absolutely will.

The breakfast I had at tea and sympathy was just the thing! As usual it was extremely crowded. I think the only reason I was able to snag a table without a reservation was because I was by myself. I was seated at a tiny table in front of the door and enjoyed a delicious steaming pot of their house earl grey tea, which came with refills! Then I ordered "the full Monty," which was a yummy and filling breakfast platter, where every single element was perfectly done. The toast was bone dry and a perfect vessel for the piping hot stewed tomato, mushrooms, beans, and silky scrambled eggs. The back bacon and sausage link were very juicy and flavorful, and the star of the meal was the black pudding! I don't normally like it, but this was rich and savory without any sort of gamey offal flavor. I didn't think I'd finish it but I gobbled everything right up. For dessert I thought why not try sticky toffee pudding, which to my surprise was a slice of sweet and squidgy cake studded with chopped dates and topped with a hot vanilla custard. Of course it went perfectly with more tea and the cold dreary weather. The bill wasn't ludicrous but definitely more of a meal for when you want to treat yourself! Yes, the place is small and the available seating space is limited and sometimes cramped, but that is rendered irrelevant by the quality if the meals and the service. (Word to the wise: Do not simply drop in, as the place is usually packed with customers who made reservations beforehand, so make sure to book your table online.) The food is always superb, just the kind of comfort food that I gravitate to whenever I visit England, and the cozy, intimate vibe of the place reminds me of what it feels like to be human after enduring ongoing dialysis three times per week for the past six years. The staff is always courteous and friendly -- special shout-out to the most excellent Molly -- and the restaurant's proprietor is quite a character who clearly gives a damn about the quality of the restaurant's every aspect. I have tried many of the items on the menu, but my go-to repasts include the Full Monty (the full English breakfast ), sausage rolls , and the bangers (sausages), bacon, and beans plate with an excellent multigrain toast. And though I am not really a dessert guy (I favor savory flavors) , I have great appreciation for their deliciously tart rhubarb crumble with hot custard. And don't get me started on their comprehensive roster of fresh teas served out of individual pots at your table. (I favor the blackcurrant tea with milk.) In short, Tea and Sympathy is a singular oasis in a mad city that becomes ever more of a nauseating tourist trap with each passing day. An eatery of its singular excellence is as rare as hen's teeth and is to be held most dear. It is rare for me to find zero flaws in a restaurant, and I say that as someone who anchored the kitchen at an award-winning barbecue joint, so take that for what it's worth.

I made a reservation for a Monday evening around 8pm. Even at this time, reservations were scarce. It's not a very large restaurant so I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. I ordered the Sourdough Bread & Butter, and the Squid & Scallion Skewers to start. The bread was crispy and tasty; a solid sourdough, but wasn't anything overly unique. The skewers were herbaceous and light. The green sauce was super flavorful - especially when dipped into by that sourdough. For my main I ordered the Fish & Chips (of course). Were they extremely good? YES. Were they the best Fish & Chips I've ever eaten? No, however this accolade belongs to an actual Chippy I ate at in the UK. As far as 'restaurant' Fish & Chips go however - these are the probably the best I've eaten. The fish was expertly fried and super crispy. The chips were thick cut and well-salted. My only complaint is there wasn't more of them. An extra handful of chips and you wouldn't see the bottom of the plate in photos - just sayin! For dessert I got the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Now this WAS the best Sticky Toffee Pudding I've ever had. Extremely flavorful. Extremely sweet. Would be perfect for two to share. The rice had a bit of bite to it which I actually kinda liked. My friends thought it felt undercooked. It's basically just like rice soaked in a light curry 7. Sticky toffee / date pudding: I was excited for this since I've heard all about how Dame makes a banging one but this kinda fell short for me. The vanilla bean (sour) cream didn't really do it.
