I had been wanting to try Outset, so I finally had a chance when I was going to be in the area for an appointment. At the time, Outset's website was broken so I had to use DoorDash instead to order ahead. I got an osmanthus latte, whole milk, less sweet, one shot espresso, hot. It was done ahead of schedule, took only 5 mins. I like that you can still taste the floral notes of the osmanthus and that it's not overpowered by the coffee as you can choose the amount of shots. It was a little on the pricey side for the quantity, although I notice coffee prices are going up in most bay area shops sadly. It was more spacious than I expected inside and the decor is very orange. The banana lattes on the sandwich board outside the shop are the only reason I even considered stopping for some coffee before I had to head to a conference that was happening nearby. One of them was sold out, but they had the toasted banana latte, so I ordered that one and a butter croissant. It was a Thursday morning and the shop was almost entirely empty. It was quiet and the table in the corner was available, so it was a pleasant way to start my day. The banana latte was absolutely delicious. It's served with two toasted slices of banana on a stick, resting across the top of the cup. Banana puree is mixed into the milk and coffee, so you get mashed banana in every sip. The drink wasn't overly sweet at all. If I worked nearby, I'd be getting an unhealthy number of these every week. The butter croissant wasn't anything special, but it was warm, flaky, and soft inside, so it got the job done. This is another cafe that relies on tablet ordering, which I don't love, but the barista was really nice when he gave me my drink and recommended that I start with eating the toasted banana, so there was at least some level of friendly human interaction here. I do think it's odd how spacious the interior is here, but how little seating there is. These guys really need to add at least a couple more small tables to make this a more welcoming space rather than one that feels like they'd prefer for you to keep it moving. Sometimes you have a drink in hand, but feel a gust of wind. However, that wind may accidentally take you to another cafe. Stumbled upon this place after walking from a matcha spot nearby and was glad I did! With vibrant orange and open atmosphere, Outset Coffee serves unique drink items ranging from Orange Americanos and Osmanthus Latte. I was particularly drawn to the Osmanthus Latte as I've never had oolong in a coffee before. You order at the kiosk using Snackpass or at the cashier. Staff were really friendly and asked if I wanted any recommendations. Prices were $7-$8. The Osmanthus Latte had a strong coffee flavor and worked well with that Osmanthus Oolong Tea. Going on a coffee run I am always amused about places which serves lots of different types of coffees. Growing up in the Mission there were only a few choices of coffee available. There was strong coffee and cafe de leche ( coffee with milk in Spanish) which came closest to having a latte. Now it is common to see at many coffee places in the Mission and around San Francisco serving many versions of lattes . There was this one place in the Mission on Valencia street which had many good flavors which as Avocado Latte, Korean Yuja Americano, Durian latte ,Ube Latte, and Not Mojito (Unfortunately no alcohol). This location on Valencia has been replaced by a Little Sweet boba spot. I then discovered Outset has relocated to New Montgomery street. So Don Juan de La Matcha in the Mission went for a coffee run from the former Outset of the Valencia street location to the Outset Coffee in the Financial District in San Francisco. Strolling through San Francisco some businesses may seem like they are no longer in existence but some just relocated. Outset moving to a new location from Valencia street to New Montgomery is better than not having a store at all in SF. Inside the space is bigger and there is more indoor seating . I do enjoy their coffee before but Don Juan de la Matcha wanted to try the matcha. Although my mind was all about getting Dirty Matcha I decided to be berry good and get the Matcha Strawberry Korean Yuja tea on ice. Since Karl the Fog has been on a siesta lately and I been getting a few sun drops so I went with the cold matcha drink . The matcha was not too sweet and it was berry tasty and smooth. Next time I will have to try the Vietnamese Cold Brew. Go on a coffee run or a "jog" rain or shine and sometimes with "Karl the Fog"then order a coffee and relax and read a book or a "blog "or engage in an interesting "dialogue" When it's time for a coffee run in SF and to go "reset" just remember it's no longer on Valencia street and just don't you "forget"there is different location in SF so it's no "sweat" recalibrate because now it's located on New Montgomery street and its known for its specialty coffee still the same "Outset" read more

We came to grab coffee before walking to the Ferry Building Farmer's Market on a Saturday morning and I was sad to see that their tiramisu latte was sold out. I ended up getting a caramelized banana latte which turned out to be pretty good with a good banana flavor and not too sweet. The espresso is fairly light and I do like my drinks a bit stronger and more roasty but I'll be back to try the other specialty lattes for sure. read more

I love how conveniently located this coffee shop is to all of the financial buildings -- but also, a perfect venue to have cupsleeve events or any event or occasion of any kind. If you're trying to find parking around this coffee shop, it's probably better to find street parking or a parking lot that charges by the hour, as there is barely any metered parking and at times, are extremely inconvenient. I was in the area to try the new matcha place (IYKYK), but the line was way too long. I saw this spot and remembered that I wanted to come back for the Durian Latte so Plan B it was. I was mostly interested in this coffee shop because I saw they had a durian latte. That's no longer being offered (must have been a seasonal thing) and I don't know if I would have really gotten that drink anyways since durian can be hit or miss. I also tend to prefer it fresh, so who knows at this point. We decided to try yuja (or yuzu)-based drinks instead. My sister opted for the yuja americano. It has a sweet citrus component which complemented the espresso. I took the tea approach and ordered the matcha strawberry yuja. In theory, everything works well together, but after a few sips, I realized the yuja was pretty overpowering and was a bit too sweet, esp with the strawberry bits. I didn't love it and decided to pawn the rest off to my sister instead. I might have to stick to their traditional espresso drinks instead next time! read more

We needed to be at work around 8 and it was probably 7:50 when we landed here but it was CLOSED, on a Wednesday. I guess this location doesn't open until 8 which was mind boggling to me. I guess I could have seen that on the posted hours but c'mon you are a coffee shop! I was pretty annoyed and ended up at Starbucks nearby. Come Friday, I was preparing to leave town and realized I finally had the time to stop into this place, so I checked their website and found I could actually place an order online. So, I did that, finished getting ready, and walked over. I ordered a vietnamese cold brew and a ham and cheese croissant. When I got there my phone said it could be another 20 minutes and the place was mostly empty with one or two other people waiting for an order. I was pretty dismayed. Seeing the ordering kiosks I figured maybe I should have just ordered when I got here? I hung in there and my order was ready much earlier than the app told me, though it was still way longer than I think it should have been. So now the important part? Was the food and coffee good? YES. Overall I'd return here as I really did enjoy my coffee and croissant, but the hours here are awful. Next time I'll probably order at a kiosk and make sure I have the time to wait. We stopped in for a pre-work coffee as a small group and Outset was conveniently located on the walk in. It looks like you can order at the counter or at the kiosk, but they seemed very busy when we walked in. We ended up ordering on the kiosk and hanging out while we waited for drinks to be made. They have coffee, matcha, ube drinks and some bites on the menu. I opted for an ube cold brew and I thought it was the perfect level of sweetness for me with the standard order. The barista was hard at work, so while the customer service wasn't over the top it was efficient and they were able to get us out relatively quick for how busy they were. From the donut coffee, to the ube creations, everything they offer looks photo worthy! Protip- order ahead...I say this knowing that we certainly overwhelmed the lone staff member attempting to service all 15 of us in addition to the regulars, but bravo to them for doing their absolute best. That being said, although aesthetically appealing, I'm not sure this shop is made for volume. Ordering both counter service, and via the mobile tablet, it took 15ish minutes for the first four of us to receive our drinks before one of the systems froze, increasing the wait time for everyone yet to order. After that time, some patrons received their drinks within 5 minutes while others waited near 20 irregardless of if they ordered beforehand or through the available method in store. Big rush, longer wait times, all would be aight if the orders were correct, and the caffeine helped me start my day. Leading primarily with sugar, I can't say the sesame mochi muffin or the ube latte satisfied the brief. Unfortunately, the sesame mochi muffin did not feel freshly baked. On the contrary, if you're not in need of a caffeine boost, and love cereal milk, the ube latte is calling your name! Even though my experience was less than perfect, there are plenty of other options I'm interested in trying in the future. I tried a friends matcha, and it was beautifully balanced, and the guava americano looks like a real treat! While they have a lot to offer, being a caffeine starved night owl seeking an 8am kick, it may take me awhile to return. I'll do so on a day I'm willing to wait 5-20 minutes. One of the WORST drinks I ever had. I got the iced traditional matcha and my friend got the tiramisu latte. We were expecting it to be good based on the reviews but it's not!! The matcha straight up tastes like watery milk and nothing else. The coffee in the tiramisu latte was bitter and it also tasted watery. You can't taste the cream AT ALL. The ambience in here is nice. It is a good place to study with all the natural lighting, but that's about it. The restroom was also out of order. The staff was also very nice. You can order either with them or on the kiosk (snackpass). I don't recommend this place at all, definitely felt very disappointed. read more

Definitely the prettiest coffee I've ever seen. They have some really unique coffees that I would've never thought of. Banana latte (Pictured) felt like mashed banana at the bottom with a latte on top, gave it a weird texture, getting clumps of the banana sometimes. Loved the caramelized sugar banana on a stick though, was a nice touch. My friend got the caramel banana latte and it was good, smoother just a little sweeter. Also got the Miso Corn Bagel, I couldn't get over the sweetness of the cream cheese almost, but my friend loved this so 50/50. I was in the area on a Saturday at 9:30 AM and was looking for a non-big-chain coffee shop. This was a lovely place to stop by. There was only one other table occupied when we arrived, and we placed our order at the tablet kiosk. The barista was so kind and offered both me and my friend a stamp card when we got our drinks! The place got a lot busier while we enjoyed our drinks and a few people brought their dogs in to hang out while they chatted at tables. The Yuja Americano was very refreshing-- a sweet citrus, almost lemonade-like Americano. The Black Sesame Mudslide was super yummy as well! I highly recommend this if you're a fan of black sesame lattes. It's super creamy, and the salty black sesame was sweetened just right. Definitely a top three place to get a black sesame latte. I arrived on a Friday morning around 10am. It's a bright spot with pops of orange. The menu is creative and while there is a counter you can order at, I highly suggest using the kiosk. It was clear that they were under staffed and the individual making drinks and handling orders was working their butt off. I went with an ube latte and a strawberry mochi donut. While the wait was a little longer than I expected, my drink was super creamy and flavorful and my donut was chewy and packed with strawberry goodness. I don't live anywhere near an Outset location, but if I came across another one some time, I would definitely consider grabbing another treat for myself. read more

What a perfect sunny afternoon just to settle for something special to drink and to have any Third Culture Bakery style treats! But like I said time and time again, never will I have a cup of coffee, hot or iced. So what's my approach for my consumption? Of course, matcha! I had quadruple whammies ever since my first day inside Outset Coffee. Most of the mochi donuts and mochi muffins were sold out, tonic drinks were sold out, my matcha mochi donut was heated up, and I received more than two dozen of quarters to carry as my change. But that didn't bother me so much. Waiting for 5-10 minutes to have Matcha Sunset didn't take that long before I walked one block back to my workplace. It's matcha coconut milk was half as strong as the matcha mochi donut. Still a good start in Outset Coffee of SoMa. Hopefully, I might come back once more for a fizzy tonic. read more

I visited Outset Coffee twice recently, and my experiences were quite different. Yesterday, I ordered a shakerato with a double shot, and it was absolutely perfect--so good that I decided to return today to order the same thing. Unfortunately, today's drink didn't live up to the first. The flavor, the amount of coffee in the cup was off. Maybe it was due to less ice? I'm not sure. (see picture for reference - barely full) Additionally, there was no acknowledgment or greeting upon arrival, which took away from the overall experience. A small gesture like a warm greeting can make a big difference. I really enjoyed my first visit, so I hope this was just an off day. read more
