We went for NYE and never again. My husband ordered salmon, , when his dinner came he wasnt sure where the bad smell was coming from, he took a bite of his salmon and spit it out. He then ordered a plain chicken cutlet he couldn't even cut it with a steak knife. When i was done with my scallop dinner which i was given 4 scallops what a joke the waitress came over and asked if we were done, i told her my husband couldn't even cut his chicken and she didn't say anything and brought us the check. read more

My family and I dined here during our annual Poconos vacation this past February. We were a large party of 9 so we made reservations ahead of time. The dining area is semi crammed but overall they did a great job setting up a table for us. Very old school seafood restaurant ambiance but don't let that deter you from enjoying your food here. They had daily specials on the board with a very nice size menu to choose from. This place is not cheap but the dishes were very fresh and very plentiful. Here are dishes we had that I would definitely recommend trying. Some of these dishes were a daily special but if the have any of these ingredients in another dish it will most likely be very good: -French Onion soup -clam chowder tomato based -mussels appetizer -NY strip steak -crab cakes Everyone was very happy with these dishes. They were all presented beautifully and cooked very well. Great seasoning without too much saltiness. The only dish we had that I didn't super care for was the Shrimps Overboards. Was not happy with the overall taste and texture but the dish looked great and was a good portion for the price. Definitely give this family owned restaurant a try over other franchises. Hands down the worst food and service I've ever had. Strong fish smell coming from the kitchen when I went to the bathroom & we instantly had stomach aches on the ride home. Our server was Jenn P, she literally knew nothing about specials, the menu or dessert. She seemed like she didnt want to be there and we had to ask a few times for refills on drinks which we didn't get. The calamari was frozen calamari from a bag, very tiny and so over cooked it was rock hard, my entree of seafood was all over cooked and had no taste, my wife's scallops were undercooked and raw throughout, my daughters pasta sauce was literally bland tomato water with a hard all beef "meatball" that tasted like well done burger. (She didn't eat it) My wife begged me not to get dessert but I was hoping there was something good on the menu and we were still hungry from not eating our food. Créeme brûlée was curdled and had some tangy raspberry sauce on it, apple pie was old, ice cold and broken in 7 pieces. We had a few bites, paid and left. We didn't complain but You'd think our server would have asked what was wrong when we barely touched our food? She didn't. Lastly we were not even offered bread which I read from reviews was very good. The positives were: the guy that greeted us and sat us was very nice and accommodating, the soup and salad were pretty good, the decor was pretty cool with a lake house feel, parking was easy. Whoever the chef is, should be a line cook at a chain restaurant, at best. There's no way this restaurant will get better with whoever they have cooking. For our money, Overboards is one of the best meals in the Lake Wallenpaupack area. We haven't had a bad meal yet . The specials are always exciting to hear... And surprisingly eclectic. The chef obviously cares about the food being served. Not to sound cliche but it really shows in an area that isn't exactly bustling with great options. The fish is always fresh and interestingly (in a good way) prepared. And the steak I had for the first time the other night was cooked to perfection. Very friendly wait staff and fun cocktail list. My only critique: They need to embrace their rustic-look even further. I like the heavy wood and fishing decor but the lighting in the dining room needs to be softened up and a bit more moody. Also probably wouldn't hurt to spend a hundred bucks on some nice antique fishing items. They look like they started decorating strong and quit unexpectedly. Looks go a long way. Party of 4 on a snowy night 29 inches of snow in the last 7 days. Packed house at the overboard restaurant the orange roughy and red snapper were excellent complementing the mussels and crab appetizer. Prime rib was excellent as described by the Donohue's of Newtown, pa. The staff and the owner were very friendly and made the night even better . as did the group of snowmobilers who came in for dinner an excellent place I highly recommend . I'm glad I was there I have been there 8 or 10 years before but under the new management excellent dinner. read more

I give up on this place!! Multiple times I call and ask for the dinner specials and then tell the person I will be calling back for a take-out order. I'm told "great, speak to you then." I then call back (maybe 30 minutes later) to place that said take-out order only to be told that they don't do take out because they're "too busy". This past Friday I called and Breanne was very friendly while reading me the specials and sounded happy for me to call back with my take-out order. (And I was excited to finally be getting a chance to eat this food.) When I called back another girl answered (forget her name) and I was told "one of their burners isn't working so they're really behind and not doing take-out." You don't want my money? Fine. We are from out of town and visited here for dinner for our anniversary because we were in the area. We had a group of 13 for a 9:00pm reservation. We were seated by 9:10. Though the restaurant was busy, we were served right away. They were out of some dishes (expected) but everyone were able to order what they want. We all felt the service was excellent and the food was delicious! A Hidden Gem. My dad came to pick me up in Connecticut to help drive me back home to California. On the trip back we didn't have time to stop and eat each day so we wanted to make our one big stop worth the memories. We found a few places nearby on the map but we were craving "seafood". I went on Yelp to look up the best seafood nearby the location we were on the freeway. Luckily we found Overboards. We went off the freeway for a quick trip to the restaurant. When we walked in we found out it was booked solid for the night so we were given the option to eat at the bar. Being booked solid and having people hovering for your bar stool was a good sign this was a good place to eat. We met the owner and he was great! He is friendly, will talk to you while prepping food or drinks and give you some laughs. We ordered what I think was "seafood pasta primavera" (it's been a year since we ate there and I live in California). The food came and my dad and I took a bite and looked at each other as if to say "this is the perfect dinner", it was delicious. It had just the right balance of flavor and nothing over powering or bland. Pasta was perfectly cooked and seafood was nice a fresh. We didn't have room for dessert but the food was so good and this was a once in a lifetime trip and dinner so we ordered bananas fosters. The owner came out and flambéed it right in front of us bar side. The heat from the flames off the rum and the taste make it a must order. Everyone will turn to look your way when you order it. It was a great experience and I wish we had a place just like this near my house in Cali. I hope one day I can go back on another long travel. read more

I am jealous of all the people that had such a great experience here because that was certainly not our experience! We came here hungry, on recommendation of our hotel (!) and were sat in the farthest corner after being asked the same 3 questions by two different waitresses (party of 2? First time? Reservation?) The specials were read to us so fast we couldn't register anything. We ordered the seafood "chillen" which was essentially a raw seafood platter with 3 oysters 3 clams on the half shell and an assortment of cocktail sauce and shrimp. Also ordered drinks. We received the platter and the raw shellfish was DRY. Freshly shucked oysters on the half shell should be wet. We sent it back and asked for another (cooked) appetizer of chicken spring rolls and the waitress brought the same platter back out and told us that the chef shucked us fresh oysters and we should try it and if we didn't like it, she would take care of it. She also said that if we didn't eat it she was going to have to throw it out so we should just try it. No drinks yet. We tried the "fresh" oysters and they were sub-par at best so we asked to send it back and again asked for the cooked spring rolls. The waitress came back and told us that they were only going to charge us half even though we tried to send it back twice. Her rationale was that we ate some of it- she forgot that she was the one that essentially forced us to eat it!! Finally we got our drinks. Eh. Then the bread comes out. Mini wonder-bread loaves that stick to the back of your throat. No spring rolls that we asked for twice. Hubby ordered filet which was the size of a golf ball. No joke. My seafood over pasta was so salty my tongue shriveled up like a slug. We opted not to try dessert. Honestly I'm only giving this one star because the waitress was trying, but ugh. My husband and I used to go to this restaurant on a regular basis. We went last week, I ordered the Salmon and my husband ordered the Wallenpaupack Cioppino. The Salmon was undercooked, and had the waiter take it back to the chef to cook longer. It came back to me, the same way...UNDERCOOKED! The dish my husband ordered had less quantity. Quality was not the same either. The tiramisu was cut the shape of a cheesecake and smothered with chocolate syrup! All the other times it was coated in coco powder, like it should come. It tasted nothing like tiramisu. Overboards clearly hired a different chef and it shows in their food. It's a shame because this was once our favorite restaurant to go to. read more

I've been coming to Overboards for years when I stay at our family cabin. Since I'm from NJ, I have very high standards for restaurants and this is one of the only ones I'll eat at in the Poconos. I've always had delicious dishes here--mostly get a seafood special. The owner, Chris, is usually working at this location and making special tableside appetizers and bananas foster for dessert. They are amazing. This particular night, Chris was bartending and we sat at the bar. I heard him mention something about being down a bartender, host and server this particular night. Poor guy. What I didn't expect was a flawless dinner experience where he calmly and even happily filled in for his missing employees. He chatted with all the patrons and I never heard him complain. It was clear to everyone in the restaurant that he really enjoys his work and that made our delicious dinner that much better. read more

There were 6 of us and we had the stuffed mushrooms and the shrimp scampi flatbread for our appetizers and the swordfish special, the monkfish special, crab cakes, Overboards shrimp, scallops, and the Cioppino for dinner. All of the meals were great. I highly recommend the bananas foster for dessert. Chris came out and made it at our table. One is enough for 2-3 people. I look forward to coming back. read more

Once upon a time in a far away land called Greentown, a nice restaurant was built (surrounded by the trees), to the people like me who was born hungry! Once is not enough so we had to come back for the second round. Two nights in a row, yippee! Nice location by the way, surrounded by trees and darkness at night and I loved it. It's not hard to find this place at night, there's only one road leading to this place and it's the only place with a big banner with the lights so when it's dark outside, you find this one place. Our first night here was New Year's Eve night but we didn't stay until the countdown. The reservation was at 9:45 PM but we went around 9 PM we called from outside and spoke with the woman who answered the call to say we're outside and if she can find it in her heart to let us come in and dine now that would be great. Guess what, she said yes. Cool! *:) The restaurant was crowded but there's a table for us. Our server, Jane, knew what she was doing. She started to energize the moment we sat down and throughout the night and was extremely hospitable. Maybe she knew I was born hungry? *:) Whatever the case is she took care of our table really well regardless of the busy night. We had a crab cake salad and steamers for appetizers. They brought the loaf of bread on a wooden board with some unique taste of butter. Neat! Then I ordered "The Flop" grilled filet mignon and half lobster tail. It was delicious! This was my end of the year meal. Hubby ordered crab & shrimp over linguini. This too was delicious. Hubby's meal was pretty oily though so I scooped the oil out of the plate to try the pasta. It says Mediterranean style, so it came with plenty of extra virgin olive oil, not a bad oil but I thought it was too much extra. After all the delicious meals we had, our dessert was ready for "after dinner party." So hubby ordered a slice of cheese cake for us to share. Yes, this was the last dessert before the end of the year. Fantastic! So OK, the next night we went back for more. We were greeted by a gentleman and we thought he could be a manager for the night (or owner?). Anyway, as the night progressed, he turned into a chef. So this man, a manager, a chef and what else? He prepared the food in front of the guests who ordered this one particular dish (why didn't I get that?). While sauteing the food, the fire went up just like "Food Network Channel" or "Iron Chef" on TV. Wow! Where did they find this one? I was amazed until I forgot to take a picture. Sorry, no picture of the performance but hopefully readers get to see it live. The second night we were served by another pleasant lady, Kim. She read the specials and recommended some dishes. We had calamari from the special menu and tuna tartar from the regular menu to start. Wow, awesome! Then we both ordered from the specials: Chilean sea bass for me and veal for hubby. No dessert this time, New Year's resolution! Our dining experience in this town was very delightful, peaceful and beautiful. This place is packed even when it's -9 degrees out. We've drove passed it so many times thinking is a local bar but we decided to see what it's about. Packed for the coldest day of the year! We were greeted the second we stepped foot inside, we grabbed a drink and waited 10 minutes for a table. The bar ladies were super sweet. We decided on the dusted Cajun shrimp app which they make right in front of you. Ahi tuna with seaweed salad in a martini glass and the French onion sauce. They bring you homemade bread and butter to the table followed by salad. I had the scallops in sweet chili Thai sauce over jasmine rice and my guest had the Delmonico steak with buttery mashed potatoes and green beans. So impressed with the presentation and quality for a place in the middle of nowhere..no room for the banana flambé that they make in front of you since everything was so delicious...next time for sure read more

This little gem is hidden away in the woods of the Poconos! The servers were quick and accurate. They accommodated diners with children without a problem. The food was excellent! The PEI mussels appetizer we had was priced way too low for tons of mussels (probably 2 lbs) and probably the best mussels I've ever had (and I've been to PEI!) The juice was cream based and advertised as creole, the spice was on point, absolutely perfect. Homemade bread was so light and fluffy and had such a perfect crust we kept wanting more and more to soak up the mussel juices. The tomato bisque soup had some tomato chunks in it and I hardly got a taste because my wife ordered it, she's usually a really good sharer. I got the french onion, I wanted New England Clam Chowder, but the clam chowder on the menu is manhattan style. The french onion was basically as traditional and well made as it comes. Nice and oniony without big unmanageable chunks of onion, served in a crock with tons of melty cheese and a big piece of bread under the cheese. I imagine Julia Childs would have loved a French Onion soup just like this. The stuffed shrimp were huge! The best part about the Overboards Restaurant was to see the family who owns the restaurant working together. The dad/owner made several tableside orders of strawberries foster (flambe) and his two children were always looking on. I can't blame them, the fire is MESMERIZING!! I wish I could make that dish at home!! We didn't order it, but we heard a nearby table rave about the dish. I wish I'd seen a fire extinguisher nearby though, fire is quick to get out of hand if there's an accident. We discovered this, restaurant 3 years ago when we got a place in the, area. It quickly became our favorite and we have never, had a bad meal here. Our son and his gf also stop here regularly and love it. The chef makes a special meal for his gf as she is a vegetarian, and it looked so good I was sorry I didn't get the same last time we ate there together! Came here Memorial Day weekend for my birthday. We called about 2 or 3 hours ahead of time for reservations for a party of 7 and were accommodated. Once we got there we were seated right away. My son has food allergies and what I presume to be the owner and our waitress took this into great consideration and let me know what they were able to make safely that didn't have any of his allergens (as an allergy mom this is a huge deal for me when selecting restaurants). There was a bit of a delay in the kitchen due to the traffic in the restaurant and they notified us that it would be a bit longer (which I always appreciate instead of waiting and wondering where our food was). Our food was hot and delicious when it came out, we had everything from steaks to seafood and no one was disappointed. My husband had the scallops and they were delicious! They were large scallops filled with flavor (the flavor changes daily as per the Chef), I had the Wallenpaupack Cioppino and it was very good. It was an average size, not too big like a lot of similar seafood dishes from other restaurants. My sister wanted the salmon but they ran out for the night, which is good because that tells you they carry fresh fish. Overall we had a great experience. Only downfall was that they forgot to bring out our salads (which come with the entrees), not a huge deal since we also got appetizers but would have been nice in between especially since there was a delay in our meals coming out from the kitchen. I've lived within 5 miles of this place for about 20 years and never went until 2014. I regret not going before this year. The food, the drinks, the staff-- everything was great! This is what I consider a "real" seafood restaurant. This is probably the best bar, drinks-wise, in the Greentown/Newfoundland area. The martinis are unique and fantastic! Edit: I was reading other reviews and the escargot must be a non-menu special, because I would have ordered it, had it been available. I had a white potato leek soup, a salad and coconut shrimp. I swear I did not see escargot as an option on the menu in July/Aug 2014. read more
