Owen Brennan's have been a staple in the Memphis restaurant scene. I don't know how long they have been in the area but I know it's been over 15 years. Do they have the best gumbo in the city??? No. But is really good and satisfying. But I'm biased. Once you had real gumbo at NOLA, nothing can compare. The other items are really good on the menu too. The shrimp and grits, the green tomatoes, the fish Peres, the grouper are fabulous dishes. One thing that I did not like, it was the service. We were waiter by 3 different people. Don't know if this is the norm for them, but it did not feel like a personal experience. With each waiter introducing themselves and trying to remember their names. It felt off!! The place is the same as it was when I came 15 years ago. It hasn't change. I do wish they could lighten up the place though. It just feels dark and gloomy. I will say they had a nice creole music band. That was super nice!! Overall, I do recommend this to locals and travelers looking to eat a good home cook meal.

Finally got out of the house to eat and we was celebrating my birthday / our anniversary. We hadn't been here in awhile. Had great service except we ordered the bbq shrimp and told our server several times the bbq shrimp was overdone and didn't taste right. In fact she cleared them and didn't offer to take them back or get us different ones or something different or even off the check, get manager nothing. The appetizer shrimp cocktail was okay. The chargrilled oysters was great. The redfish was amazing and the bread with the romalaude butter was delicious and the crème brûlée was Devine !!

I assume this restaurant is related to the Brennan's restaurants in New Orleans. The atmosphere reminded me of those restaurants with the decor and friendly staff. Our server was INCREDIBLE. The food was excellent! We started with an Angel's Envy Old Fashioned and a Watermelon Blueberry lemonade with Tito's Vodka. Then we ordered the fried green tomatoes, which came dressed with arugula, candied bacon, and blistered cherry tomatoes. Then we ordered the Redfish (of course if you know any Brennan's restaurant) and the Pasta Jambalaya. We were so full we took our Key Lime Pie to go! Thanks to our server Jason for being so friendly and helpful. Even the French bread and butter were wonderful!

Great ambiance and food, but when went for a business dinner with 15 guests, their tea machine was down and they were out of Basil Hayden whiskey, so could be an issue with ordering. Food was spectacular and the service is amazing. The bar is a great place to wait and take in the atmosphere while you wait too. My favorite is the stuffed shrimp. It's broiled shrimp with a crab filling that like eating a crab cake served with the best grilled vegetables and hollandaise. The bananas foster is a must.

Clean, great ambiance, music, servers and service that makes you feel welcoming! Everything was great and tasty. You would think this place is VERY upscale being that its located inside Oak Hall, but come nicely dressed and you'll fit right in. The building is aged, but clean. Restrooms could use an upgrade but clean. Well know for brunch, lunch, or dinner. You choose!

My hubby and I went here for our 7 yr anniversary for dinner and we were quite disappointed. The place has not changed in years with same old dated carpet that appeared dingy, dirty walls that could use a new paint job and the service was not very great. The is suppose to be a New Orleans/Creole type restaurant and for that reason I was disappointed to find that my rice was badly under cooked even after the waiter brought me another plate with over cooked fish. For the price of the meals here one expects higher standards from this place that's been around for a long time. read more

We ate there tonight for my birthday. We had oysters Rockefeller - the oysters were so chewy and tough we finally spit them out. The topping was ok, not bad, but not great. Next was crayfish pot pie. That was pretty good. Lots of crayfish inside and the crust was outstanding. Next the entrees. I had the "World Famous" Crawfish Étouffée. it wasn't great but wasn't bad either. Very soupy and very little rice. Also extremely small crawfish and not very many. I took my fork to search for them to make sure there was crawfish in the dish. She had blacked redfish. It was well blackend and dry and mostly flavorless. It wasnt bad, it just wasnt good. But the worst was by far the "Bananas Foster" for dessert. It was almost insulting. It was sauce in a bowl with 4 banana pieces floating in the sauce. The girl poured a little rum in the bowl and lit it. Then when the flame was out she almost plopped it on the table and set a spoon next to the bowl, said enjoy and walked away. This was NOT Bananas Foster. I thought about showing her a youtube video on how to make Bananas Foster. Bottom line, $100 and an hour later, I left, never to return. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT (I uploaded a photo of the "Bananas Foster") what a mess! read more

There were 4 of us for Sunday brunch, the food was fine but overpriced for what was offered. The thing is the owner keeped coming up to us and the other tables around us, talking about nothing and he was reeking of booze and slurring his words. We didn't pay much attention to it until he came back and did the same thing again. He did the same thing to the other table around us, they looked at us and we at them and said what the hell. read more

Please someone... anyone... teach them how to make rice. Any and every meal they have has hard rice chunks that never get cooked. It's like a bad nightmare... you could be eating the most delicious dish and then get hard chunks of rice in it... etouffee, gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and rice... are all dealt a bad hand because your trying to eat around hard uncooked rice pieces. Then you get that big tab... and you have these mixed feelings. The brunch is delicious but for the Love of GOD fire whoever is undercooking the Got#%*^ rice!!! read more

The food isn't bad, but it's nothing to get real excited about and it's definitely over-priced. The day I was there our service was poor as well, maybe that guy just had a bad day, but he had a major attitude and wasn't helpful. I don't plan to go back. read more

The Sunday morning buffet is heavenly. Every piece of food in the line is amazing. My personal favorites were the prime rib and the bananas foster. Very expensive but worth it for the right occasion. Highly recommend. read more

Had brunch here and I am blown away. We were 8 with a high chair and the the wait staff were wonderful. Everything we ate was fabulous! Best catfish I have ever had and that is saying a lot! Pancakes, waffles, veggies, best beans and rice and all the chefs, especially the omelette chef; cannot brag enough! Thank you for such a wonderful family experience! read more

Over priced. The food is just ok. The restaurant smells musty, and the air does not work good in the summer. Half The ceiling fans above the bar don't work either. I wouldn't waste my time for the money. read more

It had been years since I had eaten at Owen Brennan's, so when my brother wanted to meet there for dinner I was a bit skeptical. I could not remember why, but there just had to be a reason I haven't eaten there in the last 10 years. To my surprise, I really enjoyed my meal. I had the Seafood Newburg, which was just as good, if not better, than I remembered it. Still a heavy meal, I was excited to take some home for the next day. My brother had the Red Snapper Perez, and he truly enjoyed every bite. The reason for only 3 stars, though, he and I agree - the Chargrilled Oysters we had as an appetizer were more bread crumbs than oyster. We had anticipated that they would be lightly topped with breadcrumbs, but no, completely immersed is a better description of what we got. Also, for dessert, we shared a Creme Brulee, and it did not taste like it had been made that day. I will likely return, but will make different appetizer and dessert choices. read more

Terrible service. Rude manager. We came in 45 minutes before close thinking we had another hour and 45 minutes. Our server rushed us and the manager told him to go ahead and collect credit cards before we ordered. Several of us told him not to run our cards that we would pay cash. I have never been asked for my card to EAT dinner. He ran all of our cards anyway. We were not asked if we wanted more drinks or anything else but a tab and a pin! We will not return. The food was mediocre. read more

Four of us in Memphis for a week or so went along to try out the place. We were seated fast, Server was great even though she appeared a little harassed. Had the Pasta Jambalaya Not as Spicy as I like it but still excellent and packed with shrimp etc. Colleague had the Shrimp and Grits.. Raved about in. One of the worst meals we have ever had. The bloody mary was okay but nothing to brag about. The raw oysters were good. I ordered the crab cakes. They were 98% filler. They were floating in some dreadful sauce. So much for a crispy outside. No crab taste or texture at all. My husband ordered the oyster po boy and it appeared the "chef" almost thought about putting some oysters on the po boy. The beignets were a complete disaster. When we bit into them the dough was so incredibly RAW it pulled out like string cheese. Memphis has an abundance of nice restaurants and Owen Brennan's is NOT one of them. There were very few people dining for a Saturday afternoon and we can certainly understand why. Don't waste your time or your money when fine dining is to be had at many wonderful restaurants that Memphis offers. read more

The last couple of times I have dined at Owen Brennan's, I noticed that all of the minorities were seated in the rear of the restaurant, in a room that resembled a sunroom. The first time I noticed it, I thought that maybe I was being overly sensitive as to why it seemed like most of the blacks were almost "hidden", in the back of the restaurant. I recently dined at Owen Brennan's again for brunch, and I noticed the exact same thing! There was a 20 minute wait, so I was able to really look around at the people who were already seated in the main dining area. All of them were white, with the exception of one African-American woman who was dining with a white woman. There were several African-American people waiting to be seated. There were several empty tables available in the main dining area, yet, the hostesses were bypassing those tables, and continued to seat African -Americans in the rear. Of course, my family was seated in the rear, as well. There was not ONE white person seated in this area! In 2015, I don't understand why more people have not called them out for this. Also, the brunch was severely overpriced at $35 per person, not including beverages. No bacon and eggs is worth that much. Needless to say, I will not be dining at this establishment again. read more

First, let me say I love Cajun food and was really excited about Owen Brennan's before I went. I went with my wife for brunch, and this was my first time at Owen Brennan's. They had the opportunity to make me a life long customer, but it missed the mark badly and was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in a long time. Simply put the food & service are not commensurate with the money you pay. The overall variety of food and the atmosphere was was nice, but honestly the quality wasn't much better than a Waffle House or IHOP which is not to be taken as a knock on those two chains. The wait staff was unfriendly and slow. This is a low class restaurant posing as fine dining establishment. If you want to have a nice meal with a significant other or host a group of people for a special occasion, I would recommend avoiding this place. I personally will never go back if I can help it. There are plenty of other nice restaurants in Memphis to choose from. Don't let the New Orleans gimmick suck you in. read more

Time to update…read more... I am breaking up with you for good if this keeps happening, Neil. I try to be cool with the Fat Man, who rocks, but it's getting increasingly more difficult. You don't even speak to me any more. Hobbling around like "The Penguin" and shit, all sully and frank. This time he is sitting with the old guy group by the bar. A guy says he's not paying for his burger because it is too small for the money. Neil tells to the bar lady "you tell them to save that burger and the next one comes in, use it!" Gross. This also leads me to believe my food was leftover from last week. More on that in just a bit... The place is just flat nasty in the front. Grease, dust, dirt, and grime. I would hate to see what the kitchen looks like. The only reason I still come here is to reminisce about my Dad. He and his friends loved this place. They have a chicken liver lunch special on Wednesdays that we used to hit up together. I have always loved the burger here although it's been years since I had it. Never will again bow. Service is usually ok as there are more mature type folk working here for the most part. The bartender lady with the spiked blonde hair is nice in her own way. Not the case this last time though. I had a newbie server it seemed. My last visit sucked really bad. My last three visits before that, sucked moderately bad. I can take the moderate piece, but won't stand the shit I got last time. The beans are served once a week, and the corn is on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Why do I mention this? When I came last time, the veggies I was served were leftover from being cooked before. No doubt about this. No way they weren't. It was 11:45 so there is no way it say out long enough to get this old. So, I do believe that I was served last week's leftovers. To add to insult, they were cold. The livers and the butter were the only things hot. Look at the pic from this last visit and look at the history of my plates here. You can watch the quality degrade. I would have complained had the new girl given a shit enough to ask how I liked the food I had one bite of. She just walked up and asked if I was ready to pay. While the waiter mentioned they have a full bar, having a drink menu (even a basic one) would make ordering much easier and more enjoyable, especially for guests looking to try something new. Service-wise, the waiter was clearly overwhelmed and not very available, but when she did come to the table, she was very kind and pleasant. No complaints about her attitude--just a staffing or management issue. Overall, there's definitely potential here, but improvements are needed in food temperature, menu accuracy, and bar consistency to elevate the experience.

Owen Brennan's on Mother's Day was an absolute sport. My wife and I somehow managed to snag two seats at the bar for the brunch buffet, and from the first plate forward, it was game over for our self-control. The buffet setup was massive. So massive, in fact, I never even made it to the salads or fruit section. I kept getting distracted by things that actually mattered--like pancakes so good they'll make you look at Cracker Barrel with disappointment, made-to-order omelets, and a pasta station that deserved its own standing ovation. Then came the endless parade of comfort food greatness: green beans, broccoli, bacon, sausage links, biscuits and gravy, peel-and-eat shrimp, smoked salmon, grits, chicken wings, boneless chicken breasts, French toast... and that's only what I could physically fit on a plate before poor decision-making took over. But the undisputed heavyweight champion of the buffet? That prime rib station. Tender slices with au jus and green onion sauce that had me seriously considering a second stomach. Absolute perfection. And somehow, even with the place completely slammed for Mother's Day, the bartenders stayed upbeat, attentive, and genuinely awesome the entire time. That kind of service while chaos is happening around you deserves recognition. I don't know how often Owen Brennan's does this buffet, but if you ever get the chance--go hungry and wear stretchy pants. This one's a winner. read more
