Went on a Friday night and it wasn't busy. The decor is elegant, love the chandeliers. Food was excellent! We all got steak and my filet was just perfect. The green beans were crispy. Potatoes were delish. After eyeing a neighbors dessert, which they recommended, we got the panna cotta and loved it, as well as the plating. And of course our server was pleasant so everything was just wonderful! Highly recommend this place! read more

Have lived in Chino Hills for over 33 years. We've never been here before. Went for a financial seminar where the dinner was comped. If the food was good, I would consider being a return customer. However, this was not the case. The filet mignon tasted gamey or freezer burnt. The Panna Cotta was soupy and runny. If they host an event like this, they need to consider the people who attend as future customers. Will not come back. read more

This is one of the most amazing places in the Chino Valley that is so unknown and only word-of-mouth advertisement. I come here for special occasions, and then I want to come back for more. Everything on their menu is delicious everything is made with care you can taste the love that the chef has in his food. It is amazing family run business, and I can't think of anything better to want to go and celebrate any occasion, but to go to Owen's Bistro. read more

I recently came to this restaurant to celebrate my mother's birthday. The decor of this restaurant is beautiful. It has a very cozy, warm feeling to it. The staff was extremely professional and polite. The food was also very delicious, I just wish the portions were a little bigger for what you pay for. Overall, great experience. NOT a "chefs table" kind of experience. Not even close, maybe because it's kind of remote and no other fancy restaurants in the area that's why the high reviews? Came here with very high expectations and even dressed up and wore my heels since it's been a while since we went on a fancy date, but ended up very disappointed. On a Friday dinner the place was not packed even though they pretentiously seem to be a reservations only kind of place. Service was bad. The server was very unattentive and unwelcoming. In fact, I felt slightly discriminated and unwelcomed because of the lack of attentiveness from our server. When we sat, it took a while without anybody checking on us that we had to ask the water guy to get our server to get orders. My appetizer came before my cocktails which I even needed to follow up. The vibe was very mature maybe above 50's, dressed well but very rowdy. I didn't even notice the live music because of the background noise reminiscent of roscoes in chino hills. There was a table cloth a flower on the table, but there was also was paper like boiling crab. Not sure, but the memo I got from the comments was this was a "fancy date place". The price was fancy though, $40 for an entree. $10 for an appetizer. I got Brussels sprouts and the pork and my boyfriend got the venison and the mushroom soup. The Brussels sprouts was really good, but the rest were plain. The cocktails were just okay too. Not worth it I would say. read more

My wife and I stumbled across this establishment by accident. The waitstaff was excellent, very attentive, dirty plates removed quickly and we never had to waive down waitstaff (they were always on top of it ). My wife loved the bread and my Caesar salad was excellent. My wife said her filet mignon was cooked to perfection as was my ribeye. I hate Brussels sprouts but I ate half the side dish, and my wife said they were the best Brussels sprouts she has tasted. I enjoyed my old fashion and my espresso martini. My wife said her chocolate cake was dry. The prices are high but in line with most really good seafood/steakhouses. We will definitely be back. read more

Wow! What a treat! Have been wanting to come here for years but waited for a special occasion and they did not disappoint! I took my newly engaged fiancé out to dinner and we enjoyed everything!!! We started with the fried brusselsprouts! Highly recommended. Never knew you could make them taste that way:) She ordered the sea bass with vegetables. The sea bass was perfect and the veggies were tasty. I ordered the New York steak with sides. The parmasean risotto was such a perfect compliment to the steak! So good:) And then for desert we finished we the panacata. Do yourself a favor and order it:) All in all it was a great dinner and wonderful time for us. We will definitely be going back. We all had a horrible experience at this restaurant, we were told they were out of probably 50% of the menu didn't apologize didn't give a reason the owner herself rematch kicked us all out, grabbing the menus out of our hands. Definitely, I would never ever go to this restaurant ever again, terrible treatment so many restaurants in this world. They obviously are not hurting for customers if they can treat you that way. read more

I highly don't recommend this place based on how bad there customer service is. I'm a huge foodie & never in my life had to call a restaurant so many times over a 3 week period just to get ahold of someone on the phone. No one picks up and they expect me to leave a long voicemail and wait for call backs like is 1999, no thx! Or... I have to send them vigorous emails in order to discuss a reservation or simple question. When the rude lady finally called back I could not believe how rude she was on the phone and her tone literally yelling! See customer service! I will make sure no one goes here just based on that alone! So many other choices, don't waste ur time! read more

Nice hidden restaurant. Came with my husband for our anniversary and it was great. He ordered the salmon and I ordered the steak, don't remember which one, we shared the brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes and everything was perfect. Everything was prepared perfectly. Their menu is a bit small, but nice if you know exactly what you want. read more

The restaurant is a priced like Fleming's. You pay for bread at your table. Never had that before. A 45 dollar piece of filet with only an onion on it. No decor. Hhhhhmmmmm I will go back to Fleming's. I will go back for the wedge salad. read more

Wanted to have a nice girls dinner with my friend and she suggested we go to Owen's. She lives in Chino so I thought it would be a perfect location. The food and service were excellent. Absolutely delicious!!! Great atmosphere. It's very beautiful. Owners are sweet as can be. I heard the tomato bisque was a must try and it's so unique in flavor as it's tomato and red pepper soup with a roasted garlic type flavor. Drinks were perfectly made not too strong but a good kick. My family was turned away in the most unpleasant rudely way possible. They should update their website to say RESERVATION ONLY. We showed up at 5pm without a reservation not thinking it would turn out to be such a big deal. We were celebrating my dads birthday and had just attended a memorial service in the area, so I searched for nearby restaurants. We were the first to arrive the restaurant was completely empty. Again, not expecting to be seated right away but never imagined the manager or owner would turn us away. When we walked in a gentleman at the bar greeted us. I let him know we didn't have a reservation but like to put our name down. As I was speaking with him an older lady assuming manager/ owner interrupted and said their tables were all full and could not accommodate our party of 6 . Her approach and demeanor was so negative and in a very condescending way she sent me down the block to their deli restaurant. I've never been so humiliated or treated in such a manner ever. Almost felt like we turned away for our ethnicity. Please do better! There could of been a more professional and kinder approach on your part that day. read more

Owen's Bistro specializes in providing a sensory dining experience. 2008 Chef of the Year, Executive Chef James Kelly, is a revolutionary gastronomic artist who refers to his menu as "progressive American with a sense of humor." He personally does all the produce shopping to thoughtfully infuse the dishes with fresh seasonal flavors and colors. For instance, the butternut squash stuffed ravioli is infused with the perfect, yet uncommonly more heavy, flavor of rosemary. It is a mild dish with a full finish in each bite. "The Camping Trip," seared salmon served on a hot river stone, looks and tastes like a brisk and bright camping morning. The greens are strongly infused with liquid bacon and the rustic potatoes nearly put you in a folding cloth recliner by the fire. To further enhance the Owen's experience, hostess Denise Kelly, will warm your welcome and provide you with outstanding personalized service alongside their in-house, certified Sommelier.

History

Established in 2003.

Owners James and Denise Kelly were well favored in the Inland Empire for their gourmet sandwich shop Brown Bag It, established in 1990. The Kellys saw a need by the developing city of Chino for a slightly more up-scale eatery that wasn't intimidating. The concept for Owen's quickly became adopted as part of the city's revitalization project of downtown Chino and it nestled itself into a historic 19th century brick building.

Meet the Business Owner: James K.

Executive Chef and Owner of Owen's Bistro came from a family of Chicago restaurateurs and began his own career as a youth at the Velvet Turtle in California. He eventually established his own eatery, a high-quality gourmet sandwich shop, Brown Bag It in the Inland Empire. It was then that he married Denise and together they operated the favored sandwich shop until they realized they had the experience to satisfy the new dining needs of the redeveloping Chino area. In 2003 the Kellys established Owen's Bistro, named for their son, upon the philosophy that the locals deserved an affordable and finer place dine. Guided by their hearts they modestly began to offer dining as more than a meal but an experience. Its success is due to high quality food and service and positive word of mouth promotion, including from food critic Allan Borgen. The restaurant appeared clean at first glance, but I did notice a few food safety practices that I think are worth bringing to management's attention. While handling ready-to-eat (RTE) food, employees should change their gloves and wash their hands whenever they leave the food preparation area or touch items that could contaminate their gloves. During my visit, I observed one of the cooks, an older gentleman, step away from the line and use the drink dispenser located in the dining area. Afterward, he returned directly to food preparation while still wearing the same black vinyl gloves. I did not observe him remove his gloves or wash his hands before resuming work. I've included a photo showing the location of the drink dispenser for reference. Later, I noticed a chef from the restaurant across the street stop by and hand food to the same cook. Rather than seeing the food taken to a designated employee area, it appeared to be placed near the cook line. If observed correctly, this could increase the risk of cross-contamination if proper food handling procedures were not followed. On a positive note, I did observe the front-of-house staff washing their hands appropriately as they transitioned between different tasks, which was good to see. Overall, this isn't a bad place to eat, and I enjoyed the food. I simply hope management takes a closer look at these food handling practices, as following proper glove-changing, handwashing, and cross-contamination prevention procedures helps protect both employees and guests.

Not much flavor, and mine was missing the cheese I asked for--but it was really loud, so I'm giving them a pass on that one. For drinks, beer is served inside & outside but if you want hard liquor, you'll need to head out to the outside bar. There were two bartenders--one with long black hair who wasn't the friendliest, and another blonde bartender who was super sweet and made a really good drink My cocktail was on point, but my husband's Jack and Coke leaned a little more Coke than Jack. Overall, the vibe was definitely there Good music, good energy, and a fun crowd. We'll for sure be back!

The staff checks on you several times throughout your meal to make sure you have everything you need, which I really appreciate. This place is always busy with lots of customers, and that's usually a good sign. Even with the crowd, the service is still great. There's also a decent amount of parking available. I'll definitely keep coming back to try more items on their menu!

If I'm going to dine out, I want to enjoy the entire experience. My friend and I decided to try Owen's Bistro in the historic area of Chino. We looked at the Yelp reviews and menu and were intrigued with the offerings. The Prix Fixe menu offered a soup or salad, a entree and a dessert. I started my meal with a arugula salad consisting of cherries, a yogurt type dressing and pork belly croutons. The presentation was wonderful. The flavors complemented each other well. (I wasn't a big fan of the pork belly croutons though.) My friend had the crispy fried brussels sprouts with lemon aioli and parmigiano reggiano. I pictured the brussels sprouts being deep fried however, they were pan fried. The lemon and parmigiano reggiano gave the dish just enough tang to offset the bitterness of the vegetable. My friend also ordered the mushroom soup, it was wonderful! My main entree was "The Camping Trip"- seared rare salmon on a hot, river stone, rustic potatoes, greens, bacon dressing. In looking at the description of the meal I was a bit puzzled with the "river stone". When the dish arrived it was served with a fillet of salmon genitally placed on baby romaine lettuce, set upon a large, sizzling river rock, with sliced potatoes underneath. Just enough bacon dressing was drizzled over the top. My initial impressions was it was delicious. However, I should have removed the salmon from the top of the stone when the dish arrived. As the rock continued to sizzle, the salmon continued to cook which ultimately overcooking the fish. My friend ordered the Slow Braised Pork Shoulder- pepperoni sauce, panzanella salad, wilted spinach. We were quite intrigue by the "pepperoni sauce," which was described as "liquidated pepperoni". When the dish arrived it also was well presented. What was a bit discouraging was that the dish seemed more of a pork tenderloin than a pork shoulder. With that being said, It was a enjoyable dish. Our last decision was a choice of dessert. I chose the fruit and homemade whipped cream over angel food cake. The fruit consisted of various of "nut" based fruits (i.e., plums, peaches, nectarines, etc.) Overall it was a refreshing desert. My friend ordered a desert described as a "smore". It was chocolate mouse, topped with graham crackers, and marshmallows. I found the dish to be a bit too sweet. As others here have mentioned, the location is small - with most of the dining area being on a patio. The integration of the charm of the historic building was well done. (The building was the first national bank which was preserved during Chino's redevelopment process.) It appears that Owen's has a nice following - a table of six people that appeared to be regulars arrived with personal wine choices in tow. Overall, it was a nice experience. One of the owners greeted us upon arrival and explained that the menu changes with the season. Knowing this, I am looking forward to dining at this restaurant again. read more

Chef James & Denise (the owners) have visited my restaurant a few times, and I finally had a chance, to leave my restaurant, and be able visit to the Owen's Bistro this past Saturday for dinner. We went there upon their opening time, as I was thinking that I'd need to return to my restaurant, since the weekend nights are usually busy. So I would still have enough time to enjoy the dinner. I like the prix fixe menu because you don't have to go through serveral pages of menu items and become confused of what you shoud choose. Owen's menu is definitely a value with the 3 course dinner. I had the Crispy Friend Brussel Sprouts, and my partner had the Spinch Salad. Both were very tasty, especially the Brussel Sprouts, definitely on the recommanded list. Then onto the main course, I decided to have the grilled Rib Eye for Two by myself, with addtional $10, as my partner ordered Pork Tenderloin because we wanted to try different entrees instead of sharing the Rib Eye. I had the Rib Eye between medium and medium rare, and it came out perfect. With the portobello topping and spiced with black pepper, it doesn't require seasoning or sauce. My partner's porkloin was exceptionally tender with rings of pears (it tasted like asian pears) at bottom of each of the three cuts of meat garnished by sweet potatos. I was ony able to finish a little over half of my rib eye before I stop because I wanted to save my remaining appetite for the dessert. We had cheese cake and grapefruit with some custard like dessert. We tasted each others' food throughout the mean, and we both like everything that we've tasted. This was a great experience that I haven't been able to enjoy in a long time, especially with the overall price we paid. This dinner elsewhere would easily cost over $100 per two including the alcohol we had excluding the tax and tips. Upon returning to my restaurant after the meal, I gave my chef the remaing cut of the rib eye steak, and he was surprised of the portion that I brought back. My chef reheated the steak, and he told me that it was a very fine cut of the meat, and the flavor was great even after it's reheated. I'm giving that as extra credit to Chef Jame at Owens based on what my chef tell me. My chef has requested that he hopes to visit Owen's Bistro when he's able to get a day off. I told my chef that he can have a day off anytime if he take me to Owen's and pay for the meal. James and Denise, I will be there with Ritter soon. read more

It is hard to believe I have been coming to Owen's Bistro for over 15 years. As I said before "Owen's Bistro is simply one of the best dinning experiences in the city." It still stands today in this timeless eatery. Owen's Bistro has a lot of flavour and cultural tones and you can tell Chef Jim actually cares about the customers. It is haute cuisine without the pretentious prices. I order the steak and cheese tortellini on a regular basis and all of their appetisers are very good. Can I just say amazing! This place was absolutely delicious I was just looking for a little something to eat, but when I walked in. I could totally tell that I like Avocado House already! Their French toast was to die for and the bacon are delicious I had eggs Benedict and it was pretty tasty but I could keep my fork out of my boyfriend's French toast. they also make homemade cinnamon rolls that melt in your mouth thanks to the young man that let me try it! Let's just say that this is probably the most amazing culinary experience in Chino. The food is phenomenal, the wait staff is beyond excellent, and the Ambiance is amazing. My wife and I go to Owen's Bistro several times a year, and then, we walk across the street to the Chino Community Theatre to watch a play. It is good food, and it makes for a nice evening. Owen's Bistro has excellent food and excellent service, but you have to give yourself enough time. We get reservations for 6:30 and it takes the an hour and half to get and enjoy our meal. Why is this place even here? It's like a slap in the face being in the hood. What a waste of space. GET OUT. I hate how this restaurant's employees go back and forth between the sandwich shop and the bistro, swinging the door open fast acting like no one walks on the sidewalk. I absolutely loved my first visit to Owen's Bistro. The cozy and artsy vibes made for a delightful atmosphere. The food and drinks were excellent, and the service was top-notch--staff were incredibly nice and served quickly. I come here every chance I get. The fact that Jim and Denise are an award winning chef and maitre d', respectively, are just a by product of their love for this business. The culinary experience and the level of service you get while at Owens's Bistro is Michelin Star equivalent. The food is among if not the best i have had in the IE... the staff is warm and friendly.... service can be a bit quirky and if you are service snob stay away theaes extremly nice people they do not need your harsh critique. nice wine list and great selection of cocktails that are not your typical fare. read more

The last weekend I visited Owen's and took the Fillet Mignon, it was so perfect, I cannot even describe it, and the mashed potatoes gave a sense of homemade but at the same time sophistication, the staff was so attentive and kind, and the classic ambiance with a touch of elegance and romanticism is perfect for a date. read more

I went to this restaurant after hearing great things from it. It was good but not 5 stars. I've been to betters. The stuff was very helpful. Food was good but their portions were inconsistent. My husband and I order the same dish and and my piece of meat was much bigger than his. We loved the dessert. read more

Owen's was a romantic setting for my Valentine's Day engagement dinner. Even though it was busy, we managed to find a quite table outside away from it all. The service was friendly and thoughtful. I have never had so much French toast before, and it satisfied my hunger for the majority of the day (as I write this in the evening)! The homemade syrup is rich in flavor and delicious. The staff was observant and caring, which made the overall experience and ambience positive and pleasant!

HOUSE PAN ROAST It tasted exactly what was expected. A creamy tomato soup consistency and flavor. Got level 2 or 3 for spice level. I wanted more of that creamy flavor, not spice. Any higher than 3 would be Tabasco level spice and up. Deliciously filled with shrimp, chopped scallops, small crab meat. I could taste the crab meat, which was all sitting at the bottom of the bowl. The scoop of jasmine rice with the creamy pan roast was comfort on another level. Got the small size, but it is enough for me. I do wish there were more shrimp and scallops and crab in the pan roast. I felt the scallops and crab were chopped too small and wished there was a bit more. But still I enjoyed the pan roast and would get it again. As an appetizer and accompaniment to the house pan roast, they bring a basket with three sliced breads and a side of butter. It's a light, soft bread with a bit of sour flavor. Didn't like it. I would have preferred dinner rolls. CUSTOMER SERVICE I arrived 1 hr before lunch closing time. It closes at 2:00pm and then re-opens for dinner at 5:00pm. But service was good! Only one server, but she checked back with everyone and all around better than most places I've been at recently. Lots of people came in 30-40 mins before closing time. Still, service was friendly and they weren't turned away. LOCATION At The Commons at Chino Hills. This is a large outdoor mall and have many parking spaces.

I can definitely be more upfront about my dietary needs moving forward when ordering, but even your employee admitted over the phone that chicken is not automatically part of the item that I ordered. If your staff wanted to add chicken to an item that should be seafood only, perhaps they should have asked if I was okay with that. After communicating with your employee about my concerns, I realized that the mistake on the food was secondary compared to the horrendous service I experienced when I shared my concerns. In your reply, you failed to mention anything regarding customer service that I mentioned, so let me say these facts again. I was hung up on several times over the phone, ignored multiple times when I showed up in person the next day, pressured to sign a claims release in order to get the refund, then was told I was an inconvenience to your business. Another fact is I lost my appetite after tasting your food yet was essentially called a liar when I came in the next day because I didn't appear sick to your employee. I cannot believe that is how your employee was allowed to treat a customer and I honestly hope you had a serious conversation with them. For the record, I was signed out of my main account for several months and did leave a review on a temporary account. Once I gained access to my main account, the review on my temporary account got deleted because that account got deleted. I operate on only one account and needed to re-write any reviews that got deleted. Looks like someone reported my review for your business, so I did revise it to better follow yelp's guidelines. Therefore, it is absolutely not an exact duplicate of the previous review. The real impact here is not only the loss of appetite, but also how I was treated after I raised concerns. It really was one of the most horrendous experience with restaurant staff. I will never again feel comfortable stepping inside your restaurant that is careless enough to scoop an item that was already made with chicken in it instead of making a fresh one with only seafood then try to pressure a customer to sign a claims release to protect yourselves. Nice try, but I'm not falling for that and neither should anyone else.
