Heard a lot of good things about this place so one evening decided to try his place out. This is an order at the counter and tip at the counter. I got 3 taco dish and a side of guacamole and pico. My girl got a classic cheeseburger and a side of fries. The tacos that are offered change from day to day and you cannot mix and match the tacos available, little disappointing. Her meal came up missing the fries, took an extra 10 minutes to get fries to her, I have no idea how that is possible and it was a pain, this isn't complicated. Tacos were ok, nothing special, chicken was a little dry, not a lot of sauce options either. Guac was ok also, decent but nothing memorable. For tacos if I had the choice of this place of Imperial in Ferndale, I would take Imperial every time. Burger was also just ok, nothing memorable. For the money, I would skip this place. read more

OWL has been on my list of must-try restaurants for quite some time and finally made it there this weekend for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. It's a bit confusing as a first-time customer as I wasn't sure how the place operated. However, you have to turn to the right and head to the cash register to place your order. From there, they will call your name and bring it to you if you are sitting at one of the limited seating areas. I almost knocked them down a star as when we were headed to sit at a table for 4, one of the workers jumped ahead of us and sat at the table to play on her phone as her breakfast sandwich sat in front of her untouched. Finally, a co-worker of hers told her that people were waiting to sit and she promptly moved. I ordered the Chicken Fried Chicken (with no peas) and OWL delivered big time! First and foremost, it was made super fast. I don't think there was more than a 5-10 minute wait for the food. Everything on the plate was so delicious. The potatoes are amazing, as is the perfectly-crunchy-coated chicken with the poblano gravy on top. Don't let the poblano scare you, I tasted no hint of spicyness with my dish. I didn't care much for my horchata drink. Cross your fingers when it comes to trying to find a parking spot in front of the restaurant. We lucked out and found the last spot available, out of about 10. I'm not sure where else you could park, but I'm assuming you could find a side street or somewhere nearby. I'll definitely be back to get the same dish. This is a cool spot that I hope doesn't get too inundated with patrons as I'm not sure how'd they handle it without adding some outdoor seating of some kind. read more

When your in a rush but want good food, eat here. Very friendly staff, clean restaurant. I tried the nachos which were delicious and the sopa de pollo and shrimp tacos. OWL is worth circling around the diner for a parking spot. This Mexican-American diner is delicious! The food here is excellent and this restaurant is opened 24 hours (they close at 10pm on Sundays though). The atmosphere here is very cozy and trendy. I ordered the double layer nachos, which consisted of sausage chili/poblano cheese sauce/cabbage/pico/cilantro/radishes. My boyfriend ordered the torta ahogado, which consisted of roasted meat/sourdough baguette/spicy salsa/pickled onions. We both agreed that the double layer nachos was the best and would order it again!! The friendly cashier also suggested ordering the chicken fried chicken next time, as that is one of their best selling item on the menu. Waited for my food with my husband (he is Mexican) my food came up and they gave it to me in the bag. I grabbed it and the girl who took my order gave it to me said something to her male coworker... Wanted a late night snack wanted to try other food items since a year ago. Wow food is still amazing nachos, chili cheese fries (cheese is not orange it's aammaazzing) tried their watermelon drink it was very refreshing the macha wings are my new favorite!!! This place is busy on Friday night but worth the wait. Sunday evening we sat at the bar stool area was immediately handed menus. Quickly figured out what we wanted. No one told us you had to order at the far end cashier. Once we figured that out we were quickly served with our drinks. It's a very casual restaurant with one restroom, it's open 24 hours it was pretty steady for a Sunday night. The cheeseburger and chicken fried chicken sandwich (they use garlic aioli as a spread for the chicken and it tasted awesome) was really good. There are no refills on the horchata,lemonades, there is no soda machines here. There chili and fries were great. I think overall OWL is a restaurant I would return to. Love to go here. The food is always amazing. I only go for breakfast but they also serve more than just breakfast. The inside is small so if you want to sit you should go at an off time or you can order pickup and eat somewhere else. Even though it's small they do a really good job getting your food out in a reasonable amount of time. The prices are not at all bad for what you get! read more

This place has me so torn. The food is FIIRREEE, literally right up my taste bud alley, and could be a serious serious favorite/regular stop, but the service is so WHACK. I could have stood in the "pick-up Carry out" area with flashing lights and no one still would have acknowledged me. I saw a review for OWL was ROTD and the pictures looked AMAZING. I saw a picture of the exterior and realized....this is the tiny, black building outside of the place where you buy exotic animals on Woodward with the owl on the sign! Just like the other reviewers said, this place is VERY small. I would be shocked if it could fit 25 people inside. The only parking is the 7-8 parking spaces in front so you will probably have to park down the side street. If you have a large group or want to go somewhere where you can sit and relax for a long period of time, this is not the place. This is definitely a quick bite establishment. I had the fried chicken sandwich and OMG. The flavor literally explodes in your mouth! It was amazing! The menu is pretty much a mix between Mexican American and American and it is limited. It is open 24/7 so it's perfect for an after the bar/club meal. OWL just got a new happy customer! I can't wait to try the rest of the menu! read more

A solid 4+ stars for this place. Well deserved. As usual, I'm out galavanting across this great nation of ours on business, and a local Detroiter wants to meet for dinner. Yes my friends, parking here sucks. In-fact, it is terrible. This is because when you are selling things that taste good at a reasonable price, you tend to be popular with the kids. By kids I mean hipsters, hip-people, trendy folks, etc.. Get here early to get a good spot outside as well as in because once it fills up, grab your "waitin' shoes" and play on your phone to avoid eye contact with strangers. Fortunately my dinner date knew this, so we slipped in just before the Nu-Wave arrived and we were safe. The food choices are odd for a diner of this vintage, but not bad. You won't be greeted with all of the usual diner-fare, and if you are? Chances are pretty good it won't be the boring'ness you are accustomed to. I chose the Mexican route, and am glad I did. The portions are large, the flavors were just right, and then you have options that other places just don't advertise, like adding an egg or removing your pants. Ok, so maybe not removing your pants, but you get the point I hope. This place is really cool, and attracts an odd bunch of people, so keep your judgement at home. O.W.L is a cute, little diner on Woodward Avenue. This place is small, but the food is huge on taste. You order your food with the counter waitress then find a table while it's being prepared. I chose the eggs any style with cilantro potatoes, wheat toast, and habanero bacon. The bacon has the perfect amount of spiciness. My meal was good, but my friend's food was great. The chicken fried chicken and gravy with cilantro potatoes, poblano cheese sauce, sweet peas, and Texas toast was delicious. The portion was huge. We could have shared this dish. The watermelon juice was good also but a little warm because it had just been made. This is a good place for brunch. O.W.L. means open when lit. I'd give em 4 out of 5 stars. Ordered side dish, ask server to pick one and surprise me. Was a plain baked potato, don't order folks. Ordered 5 chicken wings, nice size and good seasoning, however food prep or distribution center they get em from did not clean them properly. I was looking forward to dining here since many people raved about it. The place is really unique, reminds me of a small diner. There are scattered seating against the windows, up by the counter, and a few tables away from the kitchen. We got the fried chicken burger, dry rub wings, and tacos. People seem to have raved about the chicken burger, but I'd have to say it wasn't my favorite. The chicken was overcooked and pretty dry. The cheese was just typical slices of packaged American cheese. The chicken portion though, was huge, so I was pretty content with the size of the chicken patty. The tacos were decent. We got the special of the day, which was shrimp. The shrimp were small and fried. You couldn't really taste anything super unique about it. But the seasoning of the sauce made it come together. Again, typical, nothing super exciting about it. The main thing I would have to rave about are the dry rub wings. We got some of the dry rub and Macha flavored wings. If we were to come back to try more items on the menu, I would definitely order more. The dry rub seasoning was amazing and they had some other sauces on the side that you could get to dip in the wings. Quick service, and for how busy the place is, the food came out pretty fast.
